DEC PowerStorm 3D30 / TGA2 (March 1996)

PowerStorm 3D30 was an early low-cost 3D accelerator from Digital/Compaq. It cost just $795 and offered up to 1280x1024 in 256 colors (this was the maximum for all resolutions). Most of you presumably don’t know the card, because you could not find it in a standard PC. It was designed for DEC’s workstation based on Alpha CPUs. There is very little info about it (often not even correct) so I decided to consolidate all I know about it. This is what I know and what I was able to measure on a real hardware (thanks to Kyle Fox):

Basic description

The card uses the standard 32-bit PCI interface and contains three big chips. Cirrus Logic CL-GD5424 is an SVGA chipset and has its own 256kB of memory (16-bit). Its purpose is just to provide VGA compatibility during boot, before a graphic driver is loaded by the OS. There is even a switch on the card that can disable it (for multi-monitor solutions with multiple cards).

The Bt485A chip is a 170MHz true-color RAMDAC that has a standard input pixel port together with a separate VGA input port. Thus, it allows a cheap way to connect both graphics chips to a single monitor output and switch between them.

The main chip (“TGA2”) is the silver one manufactured by IBM (and designed by DEC). It’s a graphics controller with support for 2D, 3D and limited video acceleration. In this particular card (3D30), it has only 2MB of video memory, which cripples the maximum color depth to just 256 colors (PowerStorm 4D20 with the same chip supports also 12-bit and 24-bit modes).

In 2D/video, it offers standard BitBLT operations, YUV-RGB conversion and a very primitive 1-D video scaling with filtering (yes, hardware does the job only on horizontal axis; vertical scaling is handled by the CPU). There is no support for multiple 256-color palettes, which means that the video is converted to colors available for the whole desktop.

3D acceleration

The chip supports following features in hardware:

Double-buffering (contrary to SGI, the back buffer is stored in off-screen memory and copied once the frame is complete)

Z-Buffer (including the necessary depth operations)

Line and polygon drawing (wireframe, solid, smooth-shaded) ... contrary to several sources the chip is not limited to just wireframe drawing

Color dithering for 8-bit and 12-bit color modes

Fast color interpolation (for Gouraud shading)

Thus, there is no support for alpha-blending (transparency effects), fog and textures. Don’t expect playing GLQuake-like OpenGL games on this. The chip’s targets are 3D modeling/simulation and CAD/CAE.

DEC decided not to integrate geometry unit (transform & lighting) known from hi-end professional cards of the era and let the powerful Alpha CPU do the job.

We have tested the card under Windows NT 4.0 using our GPUbench program running under FX!32 emulation (fortunately, most of the tests generate very little CPU load so this doesn’t affect the results and the graphics driver runs as native code). This is one of very few cards being able to accelerate 3D in 256 colors with Windows.

The driver is limited to OpenGL 1.0.1 with extensions for vertex arrays. Unlike NT4 drivers for Matrox Millennium I/II and ATI Rage II cards, this driver is full ICD (installable client driver) so it handles the whole rendering pipeline. Early ATI and Matrox cards used MCD (Mini-Client Driver), which is basically a modification of the Microsoft’s OpenGL software renderer, where you can accelerate just the features available by the card (for example only untextured polygons). The issue with MCD is that you cannot accelerate the geometry processing. On the other side, MCD allows you to use even the features that are not supported by the card. DEC’s ICD driver completely ignores textures and does software emulation only for alpha-blending.

Having OpenGL acceleration in 256 colors brings color palette issues. The driver expects RGB 332 palette by default and if the application doesn’t handle this, colors will be wrong (OpenGL applications often didn’t care as they assumed at least 16-bit colors).

Performance

Rasterisation speed is surprisingly good with 69 Mpix/s (millions of pixels per second) with smooth-shaded (untextured) polygons. This decreases to 38 Mpix/s when Z-Buffer is enabled. This allows the card to render 60 fps in 640x480. For comparison with other cards (with enabled Z-Buffer): 50-MHz S3 Virge = 24 Mpix/s and 48MHz ATI Rage II+ = 21 Mpix/s, Matrox Millennium = 32 Mpix/s, SGI O2 = 56 Mpix/s, SGI Indy XL/XGE = 9 Mpix/s, SGI I2 Maximum Impact = 240 Mpix/s

Geometry pipeline can handle up to 606,000 vertices/second (516,000 with Z-Buffer) in a form of triangle strips or 329,000 independent triangles/second (291,000 with Z-Buffer). This is about 30-50% of UNIX hi-end and about 80% of PC workstation hi-end. Geometry performance is comparable with SGI O2(300MHz MIPS R5200 with vector units; 1998). Consumer cards in a Pentium MMX 200MHz PC could handle no more than 100,000-200,000 vertices/second and 40,000-70,000 independent triangles/s (with enabled Z-Buffer)

Alpha-blending done in software causes significant performance drops to just 1.4 Mpix/s. If it’s possible, it is better to avoid this feature and use stipple alpha instead.

Verdict

It seems that this was a good low-cost choice for powerful universal technical workstations. Geometry performance was especially good thanks to the power of Alpha CPUs, which made it a better choice over SGI’s low-end (Indy), until SGI O2 was released later that year. O2 was better was heavy 3D applications, but didn’t offer that good CPU performance.

Even with the Alpha-based workstations (like the Digital Personal Workstation 500a we used for this testing), there were other options for 3D acceleration. You could buy the same graphics chipset with 16MB ($2,495) to get full true color (32-bit or 12-bit for fast double-buffering) or go even higher for DEC’s rebranded Intergraph solutions (RealiZm Z13 with support for textures; $8,000).

In the low-end, Matrox Millennium I (MGA-2064) was a supported 3D accelerator. It offered better color precision (up to 32-bit in 3D) and 30-40% worse geometry performance.

Meet the Mac

The Specs

The early 2005 PowerMac G5 2.0 DP introduced in April 2005 with dual PowerPC 970 fx G5 processors running at 2 GHz. The base model came with 512 MB of PC3200  DDR memory, clocked at 400 MHz. I’ve upgraded my machine to the maximum supported amount of 4 GB. This model was discontinued in October of 2005.

This PowerMac shipped with Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger and supports up to version 10.5.8 Leopard. Applications designed for Mac OS 9 may be run in Classic mode, as this computer will only boot into OS X. I have set up my Mac to dual boot both Tiger and Leopard.

Storage was originally provided by an 160 GB  7200 RPM SATA hard  disk, with a second  bay available for an additional hard drive. I’ve installed two 1 TB hard drives to my system, allowing the two supported versions of OS X to each have their own drive. A 4X DL SuperDrive also came standard, enabling reading and writing to DVDs and CDs.

The G5’s graphics are powered by an ATI Radeon 9600 with 128 MB of VRAM, installed into an 8X AGP slot. This card provides two DVI ports, permitting either dual or mirrored displays at a maximum resolution of 1900x1200.

For networking, you get 10/100/.1000Base-T ethernet standard. AirPort Extreme wifi, Bluetooth, and modem were all optional and not originally installed on my machine. I have since added these.

Connectivity is fairly generous for a machine of the period, with 3 USB (2.0) ports, 2 Firewire 400 ports and a single Firewire 800 port.

For expansion, you get the aforementioned AGP 8X slot, occupied by the aforementioned ATI Radeon 9600. There are also 3 open PCI slots.

OK, that pretty much covers the specs, Let’s take a look at what you can actually do with this thing in the modern era.

The Internet

 I’ll get this out of the way first: you’re not going to want to use this Mac as your daily driver on the internet.  Safari, Firefox and Chrome all left the G5 behind along time ago. Internet  Explorer? Even Microsoft has moved on from Internet  Explorer. Sort of. But...There is a web browser actively supported  for these machine. Built on an older version of Mozilla, TenFourFox is intended for PowerPC Macs running OS X Tiger or Leopard. It’s objective is to bring the modern web to these old Macs and, considering the limitations of the hardware, it doesn’t do a terrible job. Those hardware limitations are a  pretty severe bottleneck, though. It’s just too slow to keep up with today’s internet. Social networking sites like Facebook and Tumblr don’t seem to function correctly. YouTube does technically work if you can accept watching videos at 144p. Higher  resolutions bog the computer down to much, leading to buffering or choppy video. Basic, text heavy sites work tolerably well, though, and I have done quick research on the web while working on other projects on this machine. Still...Verdict: No.

Video Editing.

Audio Processing

 My needs in this area are very simple., and, I’ve been able to do very basic audio recording and editing on this Mac using a Blue Snowball USB microphone and Audacity. A quick note, though: if you’re Audio files  absolutely need to be in MP3 format, Audacity requires  the LAME library for MP3  encoding, which I have not been able to get to work with the old version of the software compatible with this old machine. I’m not saying it can’t be done. I’m saying I haven’t been able to figure out how to do it. Verdict: meh.

Retro Gaming

From a hardware perspective, this Mac should be a pretty capable retro gaming  rig. The chief problem here is simply the availability of games for the platform. Game studios tend to focus resources on where  the customers are, and in the computer gaming world, that’s going to be Windows  and gaming consoles. Back in 2005, the Mac community mainly got ports of games that had already been out for other platforms for some  time already, sold for full “new game price”, of course. If retro or any other type of gaming is your primary interest,  the Mac probably isn’t be your first choice. Still, it’s not a total wasteland out there. MacSoft put out some decent ports - Civilization IV? OK, I’m in for that. Verdict: meh.

Office

I spend most of my time on this Mac in OS X Tiger. The two office suites I’ve found  available for this operating system are Office  2004 and an equally ancient (4.0.6.2)  version of Open/LibreOffice. Whether this PowerMac can meet your needs in this area depends on, well, what you need. I use Office 2004, which includes  Word, PowerPoint  and Excel, and for me, that does pretty much everything I need it to. This old version of Office can’t open anything saved in Microsoft’s XML format, though. Those can be identified by an x at the end of their filename extensions, such as .docx for a Word document. OpenOffice can deal with these files, so if you find yourself frequently exchanging files with other people, that’s probably the way to go. Verdict: Qualified yes.

Desktop Publishing

 Ah, now we’re getting to what I consider the Mac’s strong suit - desktop publishing. With the right software installed, this old Mac is still pretty capable. I got lucky and was gifted a G5 with Adobe Photoshop CS2. That’s CS2 as in “Creative Suite 2”, so, it’s the bundle - Photoshop, Illustrator, Acrobat Pro, and InDesign.  I once read something to the effect that “your Mac will always do the things it did on the day you bought it just as well years later.” That’s not absolutely true - see Internet and Video Editing - but here I think that statement holds up. I’ve used this Mac to create newsletters. My typical workflow looks like this: rough drafts of articles are written in Word. I’ll also handle the proofing in Word (if InDesign has proofing features, I haven’t found or seen a peep about them anywhere.) I’ll copy and paste these into InDesign, and begin to design the layout. I’ll use Aperture for quick touch-ups to photos (color or contrast adjustment, brightness, etc.) while actual photo editing (cropping, compositing, etc.) is done in PhotoShop. I’ll then import these into InDesign and finalize the layout. Although very old, these are professional grade tools. Could a professional use them in 2020? That might be a bit of a stretch, but a hobbyist can absolutely use them. Verdict: Yes

Conclusion

 Hardware and software limitations make this Mac poorly suited for the modern web. Limited availability of software hobbles it’s capabilities as a retro gaming rig. But, for basic office duty and desktop publishing tasks, this old Mac can still be a productive member of the family.

The History of AMD and ATI, and my History with Them

A Brief History of AMD

AMD is actually the oldest company in this pair. They incorporated on May 1st, 1969. They started manufacturing microchips for National Semiconductor and Fairchild Semiconductor. In 1971 they entered into the Random Access Memory (RAM) chip industry. In 1981 they entered into a technology exchange with Intel. It led to AMD becoming a second source for Intel's 8088, 8086, and 80286 chips.

In the early 90's AMD and Intel's relationship soured. It started when Intel refused to divulge the 80386 technology. A legal battle ensued with AMD winning the case in the California Supreme Court.  Intel canceled the technology exchange contract. Mainly because they wanted to be the sole producer of their X86 line of microprocessors. AMD began focusing on clones of Intel microprocessors. Intel then sued AMD over intellectual property rights of the X86 microcode. AMD solved the problem by creating their own clean-room microcode for X86 execution. They released their AM386, AM486, and AM586 to an eager user base because of the AMXXX series lower prices.

In 1996 AMD released the K5 to compete with Intel's Pentium. The K5 was a RISC microprocessor running a X86 code translation front end. It was more advanced than the Pentium. It had a larger data buffer and was the first chip with speculative execution. Advanced technologies that are still incorporated in modern microprocessors.

AMD purchased NextGen in 1996 for their NX based X86 technology that led to the AMD K6. The AMD K6 is a completely different microprocessor from the K5. It still used an X86 code translation front end, and added microcode execution for MMX. The K6II added 3D-Now technologies. This extended microcode aided GPU processing, and seemed to work best with ATI based GPUs. The K6 and K6II competed with the Intel Pentium II

In 1999 AMD released the AMD K7 Athlon microprocessor. The Athalon used a parallel X86 code translation unit, and more processing registers. The Athalon had  the new SSE microcode set. It also had the more advanced MMX microcode that shipped with it's competitor the Pentium III.

There are several versions of AMD Athlon microprocessors. In fact there are even current ZEN based architecture chips bearing the Athalon name. In 2006 AMD Purchased ATI. We are going to put a pin in AMD for just a moment and talk about ATI. We will get back to AMD in a bit.

A Brief History of ATI

Array Technologies Incorporated started as a Graphics Processing Unit development company. Founded in 1985, they manufactured OEM (Original Equipment Manufactured) graphics chips. Their primary customers were IBM and Commodore. By 1987 ATI grew into an independent GPU manufacturer. ATI's most notable early GPU was the Wonder series. It remained a mainstay in desktop computers until 1994 with the release of the Mach 64. The Mach 64 led to the 3D Rage featuring the Mach 64 2-D rendering engine with elementary 3D acceleration. ATI’s next generation card the Rage Pro was the first competitive GPU to 3Dfx's Voodoo. In 1999 ATI released the Rage 128 which provided DirectX 6 acceleration.

In 1996 ATI entered the mobile 3D acceleration market with the Rage Mobility GPU. In 1997 they purchased Tseng Labs to help with GPU manufacturing. This led to the development of future Rage mobility GPUs, as well as the ATI Radeon GPU that was released in 2000.

The ATI Radeon is a completely new design from the Rage series. It offered DirectX 7.0 2D and 3D acceleration. The Radeon GPU uses a series of stream processors (or cores) that allows for scalable GPUs. This is like Nvidia's CUDA Core design.

AMD purchased ArtX the designer of the Flipper graphics system in 2000. Flipper is built into the NEC graphics system on Nintendo GameCube and Wii systems. In 2005 Microsoft contacted ATI to develop graphics for the XBox 360. In 2006 AMD purchased ATI.

Back to AMD

With the Acquisition of ATI Technologies AMD retired the ATI brand name. ATI's GPU development assets are now known as the Radeon Technology Division. AMD also spun off their chip manufacturing facilities into Globalfoundries. This turned AMD into an Intellectual property, microprocessor, and GPU developer.

In 2007 AMD released their APU mobile microprocessor series. Called the Fusion series it was a marriage of AMD Athlon mobile CPUs and ATI mobile GPUs. They use an integrated PCI express link on the SOC (system on a chip) package.

AMD was a major competitor to Intel and Nvidia until 2011 with the release of the AMD FX series. Known as Bulldozer it was meant to be AMDs high powered server and desktop CPU. They provided advanced hybrid speculative execution, and multi level branch target buffering (multi-threading). In 2015 AMD was hit with a false advertising suit. This is due to the fact that their FX-series 8-core microprocessors were really a 4-core, 8-thread chip.  In 2019 AMD settled the suit. They offered bulldozer owners a coupon towards new CPUs.

In 2014 AMD hired Dr. Lisa SU (PH.d. in electrical engineering)  as CEO which led to the development of Zen. In fact it has led to a competitive push against Intel and Nvidia. In 2017 AMD released the Ryzen microprocessor. It is based on the ZEN micro architecture. The Zen Microarchitecture wasn't quite enough to compete with Intel's current CPUs. They were comparable though, and with their lower price they became popular. In 2019 AMD released the Zen 2 architecture with the Ryzen 3000 series CPUs.  This year (2020) AMD released a series of mobile APUs based on the Zen 2 architecture. The Zen 2 CPUs and APUs match or outperform Intel's  9th and 10 gen CPUs and APUs at a much lower price.

AMD has begun to put pressure on Nvidia with NAVI and Big NAVI. They utilize next gen technology, and Big NAVI will compete with the Nvidia RTX 3000 series.

My History with ATI and AMD

I have had several AMD (ATI) GPUs, but I don't really know what they are. For the most part as an ex-Mac-user I chose systems based on my usage case, and ignored the specs. Other than the PowerMac 8500, which got a complete overhaul. I did make some upgrades to the other Macs like upgrading the RAM and in the case of my Mac Pro I upgraded the CPUs. So there are only a couple GPUs (on the Macs) and a CPU of note.

My first ATI GPU that I actively chose was a Rage 128 PCI for Mac. I purchased it in 1998. At the time I was trying to get a few more years out of my PowerMac 8500. I upgraded the RAM, hard drive, and added a Sonnet Technologies Crescendo G3 500, and I installed the Rage 128 PCI. I used this upgraded rig until 2003 when I replaced it with a new PowerMac G4.

In early 2007 I purchased a Mac Pro for my masters level video production classes. I didn't feel the GeForce 7300 GT was powerful enough for On-The-Fly-Rendering. I bought the Radeon 5870 with the much larger 1 GB of video RAM which made video editing faster and more efficient.

In 2019 I decided to rebuild my workstation PC, and move away from Intel CPUs. I purchased an AMD Ryzen 9 3900X as my workstation CPU. The CPU is a video encoding and raw data processing beast. It is a real trooper.

In 2020 I purchased an eGPU from Sonnet Technologies called the eGFX Breakaway Puck. The model I purchased is the Radeon RX560. I use it with my 2017 HP Spectre X360. It works great. You can read my review here (https://waa.ai/e6Ui).

Next year (2021) I will likely buy an AMD powered laptop. This is an attempt to move away from the Specter and Meltdown exploits that plague Intel CPUs.

Conclusion

It's easy to say that AMD and ATI have helped shape the modern computer. Whether your computer has AMD parts or not the competition pushed Intel, ARM, and Nvidia. Computers would likely have been different without them.
