I've been catching up on seasons 4-7 after Hulu took it down and Paramount+ only has the current season (found them on PlutoTV, it's free though it does have ads). And just, the way they handle issues? I was pleasantly surprised.
Like yes, we have them chasing down a guy who's going after oil executives for poisoning the land and they know they have to stop him because he's hurting people, but... BUT, they show empathy for the guy. They find out 'his whole family died because of the pollution and this is why he's doing this' and one, they do everything humanly possible to bring the guy in alive, and they talk to him like hey, we get it, it sucks and you're rightfully angry but this isn't the way.
Oh, and after all is said and done, Hondo gives the town council or whatever person a dressing down about not caring about the health impact of the oil rigs on the people who live around them, like, basically taking on the fight on behalf of the guy they just arrested.
Or the guy whose kid was denied a kidney transplant by the insurance company. S.W.A.T. shows the main characters actively caring about the issues. And yeah, showing empathetic cops is copaganda, but it's still calling attention to the issues. And it shows that Hondo and his team are kind of the exception.
Hondo butts heads with LAPD all the frigging time. And Chris helps an underground undocumented women's shelter. And Hondo's dad was a Black Panther.
Just watched the "Black Lives Matter" episode of SWAT and I'm astonished by how well they treated the subject????
For an american copaganda show I was NOT expecting this kind of powerful message, hopeless and fatalist and far from the "but look some cops are okay", talking about white guilt™️ and people using riots for their own profit and all of it being so unapologetically angry
I can't quite believe it
SWAT you are growing on me a lot

How to Pluto TV com Activate only 1 minutes
In case you are not explicit about gushing a specific program, video or express a specific game show, and essentially need to unwind, loosening up over your favored coffee, Pluto TV com Activate especially following a clamoring day at the working environment and being progressively stressed on rewinding your day then why make a get worked up about spending on Netflix, Hulu and other premium channels. Or maybe you have free substance gushing on different stages, for example, mobile apps, internet browser or spilling gadgets like Roku. Furthermore, you won't need to stress over the unending costs of paid administrations. Stream different substance of various kinds, for example, ghastliness, satire, spine chiller portions and some more. Every one of these shows will be advertisement bolstered, where a lion's share of the video substance are reruns. Is it true that you are contemplating how is Pluto TV free? At that point, keep perusing!

NAC: I’ve been looking for forever for another show, film or book that’s really similar to Higher Ground. The closest I’ve found are the All For The Game trilogy and Boy Meets World but nothing with the same premise. It would mean a lot if you could help me out and recommend some similar stories? Thanks so much!
Great question! I’ve unfortunately never found another show with the same premise as Higher Ground, but a few series with similar themes that I can recommend are:
- Everything Sucks (1 season, available on Netflix) is set in the 1996 school year and focuses on two clashing high school groups. Themes include parental relationships and discovering sexuality. Super funny and nostalgic! - Freaks and Geeks (1 season, available on Hulu) is about high school outcasts in the 80s and covers topics of teenage rebellion, self-image, and parental relationships. Was cancelled mid-way through airing but is now considered one of the best series of the 90s. - Kid Nation (1 season, available on YouTube), a reality series following a group of 40 children from different socioeconomic and racial backgrounds who are tasked with building their own functioning government and society in an “abandoned” city. Genuinely really interesting! I loved this show when it was airing. - Party of Five (6 seasons, first two seasons available for free on PlutoTV, the rest are available for purchase on Amazon), focuses on five orphaned siblings who fall into the care of the eldest brother. Addresses a lot of themes seen in Higher Ground including substance abuse, emotional abuse, parental death, and found-family, as well as topics of abortion, cancer, relationships, etc. Was a suuuuuper popular 90s show. - The Red Band Society (1 season, available on ABC Online), is probably the most similar to Higher Ground in terms of plot. It’s about a group of high school students living in pediatric ward of a hospital and covers things like cancer and terminal illness, eating disorders, and mental health. - The Wilds (renewed for season 2, available on Amazon Prime) follows a group of high school girls from varying backgrounds when their plane crashes on a deserted island. Themes include mental health, eating disorders & body image, abuse, sexuality and homophobia, parental death, & a lot more. My #1 recommendation from this list! I binged the whole first season in a day and can’t wait for season two. Don’t let any bad reviews or trailers sway you from watching, it’s genuinely sooo good! I don’t watch a lot of films, but a few off the top of my head that I would recommend: - Boy Erased (available for purchase on Amazon), is about a teenager who is forced into attending a conversion therapy program by his religious parents. Addresses homophobia, abuse, mental health, and parental relationships. Big TW for sexual assault with this film. - Eighth Grade (available on Hulu and Amazon Prime), about a girl in her final week of eighth grade and covers topics of anxiety, social pressures, sexuality, mental health. This film is so realistic and the characters are played by actual teenagers! Tough to get through solely for the cringiness of middle school and how well this film presents it all, but really good! - The Florida Project (available on Netflix), follows a six year old girl and her rebellious young mother who are living on the edge of poverty in a motel near Disney World. Topics include socioeconomic status, drug use, poverty, and neglect. It has that gritty-vibe Higher Ground can sometimes have, and shares the unfair and harsh realities some kids are forced to live through. This is genuinely one of my favorite films and I highly recommend it! The acting, cinematography, and story are all incredible. - Short Term 12 (available on a few different free streaming services), which is about a counselor at an at-risk center for teenagers. I watched this several years ago and honestly don’t remember much, but adding it because its setting is similar to Higher Ground. I believe this film centers more on the counselor (played by Brie Larson) than the kids. I’ve been slacking on reading lately so not a lot of books are coming to mind. The first few that I can think of are: - The Miseducation of Cameron Post, centers on a girl in the late 80s/early 90s who is sent away to a conversion-therapy camp. Themes include sexuality and homophobia, parental death, emotional abuse, self-harm, and mental health. There is also a film adaptation of this book but I didn’t really enjoy it compared to the novel. - A Most Beautiful Thing, the true story of America’s first all-Black high school rowing team. Topics include abuse, racism, poverty, drug use, and gangs. My appreciation of this book may be influenced by my own involvement with rowing, but it’s a really fantastic look into the relationship between “upper class” and traditionally white activities and individuals living in poverty. Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any questions, or if watch/read any of these and your thoughts!!!

I got through the latest round of layoffs at my company yesterday (phew!) and we have been told we are all now permanently working from home. I have been doing that for the last 5 months but I did not invest much in figuring out a routine since I thought it was temporary (think no alarm, rolling out of bed whenever, pajamas half the day, letting the apartment get really untidy, barely stepping outdoors, spending a lot of time on social media). Got pro tips on structure when working from home?
Oh yes, I’m now on year eight of this work from home job so I can definitely try to give you some tips. Though honestly my job is so deadline based that it kind of does the routine for me - the way I work is that I’m given something to do and unless it’s exceptionally long, it has to be done within three hours, that’s our company policy. So in a lot of ways the panic of missing a deadline and having to explain to the client why their newspaper isn’t online for all of their readers is what keeps me structured.
But I can definitely say that the things I rely on are: waking up at the same time every day (between 7:30 and 8), thinking of lunch ahead of time so if if it’s a busy day I can just microwave something and not get into the trap of ‘well I’m at home I’ll have time to cook’ because when I do that I end up spending too much time on it, taking regular breaks to walk outside (I try to every 2-3 hours) for five or ten minutes. Fresh air is just nice, I can talk to some squirrels, stretch my legs.
I also tend to have structured background noise ‘routines’. It helps with the sanity element, too, and it breaks the day up. I usually wake up and put youtube on for a couple of hours until I’ve gone through all the things on my subscription feed that interest me, then I put on plutotv (ymmv on that depending on where you are) and work to some old school game shows, then in the early afternoon I’ll go for podcasts or documentaries, and by late afternoon there are usually more youtube videos that have uploaded during the day. For me, having something like that for my mind to focus on while I work helps with not checking social media as much. Usually between things I’ll pop onto twitter or tumblr so the mentality of ‘work for as long as this podcast is on, then take five minutes to do whatever’ is useful for me to keep on track.
Of course, sometimes Dan and Phil are active, and that all goes to shit. But, you know, as a general rule, those are my tips!

Q2 was a tipping point in streaming wars. Here's how the media giants stack up
There's no question the second quarter was a transformative one for the streaming video business, with consumers streaming an unprecedented volume of internet content and signing up for streaming services in unprecedented numbers. Media companies are increasingly focusing on the streaming market, a rare bright spot on their balance sheets at a time when so many other parts of their business, such as TV advertising, are under pressure, and other parts, such as the theatrical movie business and sports, are entirely absent.
No media company captures this pivot to streaming better than Disney. Its second quarter results were overshadowed by the gains of its direct to consumer subscription offerings and its commitment to double down on that business. The company announced that Disney+ has surpassed 60 million subscribers, four years ahead of its goal of reaching between 60 and 90 million by 2024. That growth is particularly remarkable considering that the service has yet to complete its full global rollout. Disney's streaming subscriptions now top 100 million, including Hulu, and faster-than-expected growth of ESPN+.
Liu Yifei stars in Disney's "Mulan." Disney CEO Bob Chapek said that "Mulan's" streaming release is a "one-off" and not a signal that the company was swapping to a new business model, but the company will pay close attention to how many accounts opt to purchase the film on Disney+.
Disney
"Despite the challenges of the pandemic we've managed to take deliberate and innovative steps in running our businesses," said CEO Bob Chapek in the company's earnings call. "At the same time, [we have been] very focused on advancing and growing our direct-to-consumer business which we see as our top priority and key to the future of our company.
Chapek showed just how important direct-to-consumer businesses are to Disney's future in his announcement that the company is building a new general entertainment streaming service that will launch internationally next year, tied to the Star India brand Disney acquired as part of its Fox deal. He also announced that Mulan, which cost Disney an estimated $200 million to make and whose theatrical release has been delayed multiple times, will be available for Disney+ subscribers to buy on September 4, the same day it's put in multiple theaters. This move aims to bolster demand for Disney+, and test the appetite for paying a premium for premium content, of those consumers with whom Disney is building its relationship.
Netflix, the leader in the subscription streaming media space, also saw its numbers soar in the second quarter: adding over 10 million subscribers, to end the quarter with nearly 193 million subscribers. Not only did those subscriber additions soar past expectations, but it follows the unprecedented addition of 15.7 million subscribers in the first quarter. While both those numbers were bolstered by stay-at-home orders and a lack of live sports on TV, co- CEO Reed Hastings warned that the growth rate would not last. Netflix shares plummeted on the warning that the company expects to add 2.5 million subscriber adds in the third quarter, half of analysts' forecast. Netflix explained this was the result of the pandemic "pulling forward" subscriber growth into the first half of the year.
We want to have so many hits that when you come to Netflix you can just go from hit to hit to hit and never have to think about any of those other services.
Reed Hastings
Netflix co-CEO
Hastings dismissed concerns about Disney+ and other rivals that are investing in content for their subscription or free ad-supported services. He even name-checked "Hamilton," which Disney+ released July fourth weekend: "We want to have so many hits that when you come to Netflix you can just go from hit to hit to hit and never have to think about any of those other services. We want to be your primary, your best friend, the one you turn to. And of course occasionally there's Hamilton and you're going to go to someone else's service for an extraordinary film, but for the most part we want to be the one that can always please you."
ViacomCBS echoed the strength in paid streaming as well as free, ad-supported streaming. The newly-merged media company's shares were bolstered by a 25% increase in domestic streaming and digital revenue over the year-earlier quarter. That was due to a combination of growth in domestic paid streaming subscribers, adding about 3 million over the course of the quarter to end the quarter with 16.2 million, while free ad-supported Pluto TV's domestic monthly active users grew adding about three million over the course of the quarter.
Bob Bakish, Viacom's CEO, was particularly bullish on demand for ads on PlutoTV, saying the platform has bounced back to pre-COVID growth rates and ad pricing, while the broader ad industry continues to contract.
And like Disney's Chapek, Viacom's Bakish is also doubling down on digital, announcing the company is developing a premium streaming service that will start launching internationally next year.
ViacomCBS upped its domestic pay streaming subscriber guidance to 18 million by year-end, which CEO Robert Bakish said "supports our conviction in the growth potential of our streaming offering, and we're just getting started."
Brendan McDermid | Reuters
But not every company is as bullish on the market for streaming video ads as Viacom.
Roku, which reported better-than-expected results, saw its stock plummet on warnings about lack of visibility into advertising over the rest of the year. CEO Anthony Wood writing in his letter to shareholders: "The ad industry outlook remains uncertain for Q3 and Q4, and we believe that total TV ad spend will not recover to pre-COVID-19 levels until well into 2021. Advertisers in industries like Casual Dining, Travel and Tourism have significantly slowed their spending. However, we remain confident in our ability to grow our ad business, albeit not as much as we would have expected prior to the pandemic."
And it's still early days for two new players in the streaming space: AT&T's HBO Max, which launched in May, and NBCUniversal's Peacock, which was introduced first to Comcast subscribers in mid-April, before rolling out nationwide on July 15.
AT&T described the launch of HBO Max as a success, saying it helped grow the overall pool of HBO and HBO Max customers by 1.7 million in the first half of the year. The company reported a total 36.3 million subscribers between the two services. But with the persistent cord-cutting trend, HBO Max may just be helping to counter cord cutting: the traditional HBO service lost over 2 million subscribers in the first quarter. It's far more complicated than Netflix's or Disney+'s business because there are two pieces of this business: getting people who are already paying for HBO to sign up for the expanded Max digital service, and drawing new subscribers. For the latter, AT&T CEO John Stankey said the company signed up nearly 3 million new subscribers, while just 4.1 million of HBO's existing subscribers activated the app.
Meanwhile Peacock, which doesn't charge a fee for its basic service but relies on viewers to generate ad dollars, reported hitting 10 million signups. NBCUniversal CEO Jeff Shell said that the key metrics it is watching are signups — with the goal of hitting 30 million to 35 million by 2024 — along with monthly active users and monthly active accounts, which can include multiple users within a family. Shell said trends have been better than expected across the board, and that it's still early days for the new app. Peacock is still not available on two of the most popular connected TV platforms: Roku and Amazon's FireTV.
While Peacock and HBO Max push their growth, everyone is keeping an eye on the consumer, and how many services they'll want to subscribe to once they're no longer locked down in their homes.
Disclosure: Comcast is the parent company of NBCUn

Pluto TV is an ambitious streaming service with more than 250 live channels and hundreds of films, both new and classic. The app features breaking news from major outlets like CNN or NBC, sports events in high definition, and many more. Let's take a closer look at its content library and see what exactly from Pluto TV channels and movies is worth watching.
Design and Usability
It's quite surprising to see an interface this simple and comfortable in Pluto TV app. After all, it's not that popular, and we couldn't help but expect a rather outdated design. But the app turned out to be a rather convenient and useful streaming service with a menu layout that's easy to understand, a flexible tags system, and a dark theme that's installed by default. These things show that Pluto TV's team seems to care about users – especially considering the app is free.
Key Functions
The most important feature for every streaming service is the quality of its content library. Pluto TV doesn't offer you too many different titles, but they are pretty interesting and diverse. TV shows that are available via the app include Baywatch, Gordon Ramsay's Hell's Kitchen, MTV's The Hills, and hundreds of other shows. But that doesn't mean Pluto TV features only TV programs – there are lots of on-demand movies, live news and sports events translations, and more. All in all, Pluto TV is not the most impressive app in terms of the sheer amount of shows, but it has a nice selection of acclaimed content that suits almost everyone.
Security
Pluto Laptops For Sale

You don't even have to create accounts, sign up with your social media pages, or something like that. That means your data is safe, and you don't have to worry about anything in terms of security.
Conclusion
PlutoTV may not be that popular yet, but it has all the chances to get big soon. It already has an interesting selection of TV content, free on-demand movies, and other features. It could use a bigger library, though – and more work on functions like rewinding and saving favorites, but it gets a little bit better with each update, so there's hope.
Pros
Comfortable interface
Useful and convenient
Diverse content library
Completely free to use
Cons

Not too much content
Many annoying ads
Freezes and bugs

Top 10 Predictions For Media & Tech In 2020

These are my annual “Top 10 Predictions” for our brave new tech-driven world of media and entertainment for the New Year.
PREDICTION #1 – “The Great Streaming Wars” and global subscription video on demand (SVOD) land grab are finally fully “on” after years of anticipation. Disney+ exceeds expectations, Apple TV+ underperforms, and Netflix faces new headwinds as it plows forward with its Herculean content budget that ballooned to $15+ Billion in 2019 (and its rising debt load to support it).
Meanwhile, AT&T’s “all in” HBO Max bet, NBCUniversal’s Peacock and Jeffrey Katzenberg’s mobile-first Quibi find it hard to take off in those same headwinds due to consumer confusion and “subscription fatigue.” Advertising video on demand services (AVODs) like Viacom’s PlutoTV - an anticipated antidote to that SVOD fatigue - are also lost amidst the noise. Relentless SVOD pricing and exclusive content battles continue unabated in this new “golden age” of movies and television in which the line between the two increasingly blurs (and where the phenomenon of “Peak TV” is nowhere yet to be found). Apart from consumers, Hollywood creative talent is the great beneficiary of the sheer volume of big budgeted stories being told.
PREDICTION #2 – As cords continue to cut amidst these SVOD wars (or never connect in the first place), advertisers scramble for new ways to reach and effectively engage with audiences on and off TV screens. They act with new urgency to create impactful content and optimize targeting and personalization. Out of necessity (but also real opportunity), marketers increasingly experiment and turn to eSports, immersive and live experiential advertising.
Lost amidst all the “streaming wars” hoopla is the basic fact that subscription services, for the most part, jettison advertising as a key part of their overall value proposition. That’s the challenge. But the opportunity for brands is to engage more deeply and impactfully with specific coveted audiences. Through it all, traditional ad-supported television broadcasters’ long-term prospects continue to dim, but their short-term bottom lines are buoyed by SVOD giants that spend billions of dollars to break out (not to mention political candidates who bet it all during this upcoming pivotal election year). Marketing expenditures skyrocket as a result in 2020.
PREDICTION #3 – Mega media-tech M&A comes to a crawl (for now) in the wake of Viacom’s acquisition of CBS. 2020 marks the first year of rest after the past several years of frenetic dealmaking. Now, virtually all major “traditional” media companies have found their dance partners.
That doesn’t mean that media and entertainment M&A is gone forever. Behemoth tech born media companies will ultimately target Netflix, Spotify and others to serve as strategically critical pieces in their much larger machines. Amazon, Apple, Google, Facebook, and Verizon are prime suspects here. And, don’t forget massive international media-tech players like Alibaba and TenCent. We live in a borderless media and entertainment world now.
PREDICTION #4 – Once maligned streaming again drives double-digit growth for the music industry. Spotify continues its leadership dominance and drives much of that growth, but adds greater losses that ultimately become unsustainable and make it ripe for acquisition.
Meanwhile, China-born social video music giant TikTok, which became a U.S. teen darling in 2019, deepens its fan engagement and monetization model and targets Spotify with its own subscription streaming service that launches in 2020. China’s Tencent Music, which also successfully drives and monetizes direct artist-fan engagement, points the way to others and underscores the global nature of media and entertainment (and players in it).
Podcasting’s consumer appeal and strategic importance to Spotify, Apple and others grow, but monetization at mass scale remains elusive.
PREDICTION #5 – 2020 finally gives vision to augmented reality (AR) and its ultimate mass commercial appeal. Just like the iPhone ushered in the age of smart phones at mass scale, Apple’s long-anticipated AR glasses usher in a brave new world of visual computing (and ultimately become Apple’s elusive “next big thing”).
Think the film Minority Report and this gives you an idea of this game-changing paradigm shift and evolution of the screen to wearables. Semi-immersed industry eyes also closely follow AR’s original poster child Magic Leap as it struggles to live up to its hype and closes another massive round of financing, which takes its total haul to over $3 billion. Meanwhile, fully-immersive virtual reality (VR) continues to underperform commercially. But that doesn’t mean that VR’s long-term promise won’t ultimately be realized. The coming onslaught of 5G wireless networks hastens the growth of extended reality (XR) in all its forms. Speaking of 5G …
PREDICTION #6 – 5G networks launch in earnest and 5G compatible smart phones (including Apple’s next iPhone) enter the market. 5G drives high quality video consumption on those phones (a boon for Quibi), begins to transform our media and entertainment experiences (including cloud-based games and eSports), and accelerates the push toward visual computing.
5G networks are critical for data intensive entertainment experiences that demand low latency. 5G also reduces the size of consumer AR and VR “glasses,” since computation and data flow now occur in the cloud and on edge networks rather than in the hardware itself.
PREDICTION #7 – Warnings grow about an eSports bubble, but smart money plays the long e-game as 5G fueled cross-platform and cloud-based mobile gaming accelerate. Early innovators like Google Stadia and Apple Arcade subscription gaming platforms lead the way.
Given the passionate coveted young demographic at play, brands increasingly embrace games and eSports, which together dwarf the global motion picture industry. Scopely, now valued at $1.7 billion, is one to watch. Look out for the YouTube-ization of games as well, as companies like Koji give everyone (including brands) a platform to easily create, share and monetize games (not to mention use games to deepen consumer engagement). No engineering required. [Note: I am an advisor to Koji.]
PREDICTION #8 – Artificial Intelligence (AI) accelerates its game-changing ways in the world of media and entertainment. Look beyond home assistants like Alexa and Siri that have already transformed our lives, and say “hello” to virtual humans and virtual beings.
Real emotional connections with non-human AI-driven characters become a paradigm shift that is closer than we think and increasingly draws venture capital. Look at virtual influencer Miquela with “her” very real 1.8 million social followers as a model here, as well as Fable’s Lucy Project. AI also increasingly drives cost-effective and efficient content development and production. Synthesia is one startup worth watching. Virtual live events also proliferate, inspired by the success of DJ Marshmello’s Fortnite experiment and musician Lindsey Stirling’s Wave XR virtual concert.
PREDICTION #9 – Real, not virtual, live “experiences” also increasingly find their way into multi-platform media strategies, driven by a growing counter-movement to digital’s frequently heads down isolation. Live experiences, and their more lasting “soul” (not to mention selfie-worthy moments) deepen brand engagement and monetization. They also drive ever grander “offline” experiments and M&A.
Think of Madison Square Garden’s audacious Sphere project here, a $1.2 billion project that aims to reinvent the venue experience. The first MSG Sphere is rising up from the desert floor in Las Vegas right now to blow minds. At smaller scale, but equal mind-blowing impact, Woolf & The Wondershow’s Cages music experience in downtown Los Angeles’s Arts District demonstrates how technology can expand and enhance the possibilities without overpowering the underlying story. It is a “must.”
PREDICTION #10 – “Fake news” (including AI-driven “deepfakes”) overrun 2020’s U.S. elections and cause unprecedented societal disruption. The White House hangs its hat on disinformation campaigns actively promoted by major media and social media players, and claims victory no matter what the actual outcome.
The country is divided and threatened like never before in generations. Hacking headlines add to an increasing sense of mass insecurity. But in the face of daunting forces, optimism survives and social activism rises up. 2020’s fear transitions to 2021’s brave new redemptive possibilities.
THE BOTTOM LINE
2020 begins a new decade that pushes media and entertainment boundaries and possibilities significantly further. And, looking back at it all, much of it will seem so very obvious – like it does now as we look back at the long and winding road that led us to where we are today.
There are many Web Developers in Frisco CO who can help you to get an affordable website designed for your business.

Online lender Social Finance, known as SoFi, will pay more than $30 million annually for the next 20 years to entitle the new NFL stadium under construction in Los Angeles, making it the largest deal in U.S. naming rights history. According to multiple sources, the partnership eclipses the previous NFL high-water mark of $20 million annually at MetLife Stadium, and Chase’s $30 million annual deal with MSG for extensive promotional rights that stop short of entitlement. It may also eclipse Scotiabank’s $40 million deal to rename Air Canada Centre in Toronto in 2017. SoFi’s CEO is Anthony Noto, the NFL’s former CFO. Along with stadium rights, SoFi becomes a sponsor of both tenants, the Chargers and Rams, and will sponsor the adjacent performance venue. SoFi becomes one of Silicon Valley’s biggest sports spenders; it has spent more than $200 million annually on marketing in recent years. It currently claims 800,000 members, with products including student loans, mortgages, personal loans, and wealth management. The company believes the venue will help it become a household financial brand.
Endeavor IPO is back on, aims to raise about $600 million. After a postponement in early August, entertainment giant Endeavor Group filed revised paperwork with the SEC as they move forward with an IPO. The company plans to offer approximately 19.35 million shares of stock for sale, at an estimated price of $30 to $32 per share. (As usual, the underwriters have an option for additional shares.) The company estimates they will received net proceeds of $547-$632 million after expenses. Public investors will own a piece of a money-losing company that carries $4.57 billion in long-term debt. And it will be firmly controlled by the top two executives (Ari Emanuel and Patrick Whitesell) and the controlling investor, Silver Lake Partners; together they will control about 88.5% of the voting power. Endeavor has expanded far beyond its traditional talent agency roots. In the past few years it has acquired the UFC mixed-martial arts circuit, fashion, and sports management group IMG, the Professional Bull Riders tour and streaming provider NeuLion. The transactions are key reasons why the company reported $4.5 billion in debt as of June 30
Digital media rights will be the key driver for the growth of the sports industry over the next five years, with the fourth edition of PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) Sports Survey predicting growth in that sector of up to 9.7%. While the PwC paper is enthusiastic on the unrealized potential of digital, it does cast doubts as to whether sports organizations can benefit from online growth, with concerns that the major technology firms will instead be the ones to reap the benefits as both gatekeepers and producers of content. Also a factor, according to the study, will be “much lower growth rates” seen across traditional media streams, which are estimated to be at no more than 4.1% during the same period. Overall, the PwC paper does paint a positive picture of the overall sports market, predicting the industry to grow at a healthy annual rate of 6.4% over the next three to five years. That is below the 7.4% growth of the past three to five years, however, the study insists growth remains "robust."
The Trump administration has announced a national youth sports strategy that will reach beyond in-school physical education and into community-based programs. It will be funded by a legacy endowment with a goal of raising $100 million to provide grants intended to drive increased participation. Developed by the Department of Health & Human Services and the President’s Council on Sports, Fitness & Nutrition, the strategy largely will mirror a draft report issued in June. That report echoed many of the recommendations of those who previously studied participation declines, including the Aspen Institute’s Project Play. Among the focus areas: Recruiting and training of coaches and volunteers, creation of safe places to play, provision of quality equipment and strategies to increase participation among girls. Among the first to sign on in support of the endowment is NBC Sports Group’s Sports Engine -- a leading software provider for youth sports organizations -- which will offer a Premier League Fan Fest trip and other prizes in a sweepstakes to raise funds for the NEYS. Other founding supporters include the NHL, MiLB, UFC, Monumental Sports & Entertainment, the AAU, the Sports & Fitness Industry Association and Boston Scientific.
Athletes attend Harvard to “Crossover Into Business.” The program, taught by Harvard Business School professor Anita Elberse, is "built to help professional athletes be better prepared for business activities during and after their active sports careers,” per Harvard's course description. Participants will each be matched with a pair of Harvard Business School MBA student mentors who will “develop their business acumen and empower them to make better business decisions.” The program is tailored to fit athletes' schedules and interests all while leveraging the "acclaimed Harvard Business School case method.” Athletes taking part in the latest cycle of Harvard Business School's Crossover Into Business program, according to the Boston Herald, include: figure skater Ashley Wagner; tennis players Caroline Wozniacki, Bethanie Mattek-Sands, and Andrea Petkovic; former NFLer Will Beatty; Knicks forward Reggie Bullock; Magic forward Amile Jefferson; NBA free agent Jose Calderon; and former NBAer David Lee. Last year NBA star Kyrie Irving attended the program, along with former NFL tight end Martellus Bennett; NBA players Paul Millsap, Zaza Pachulia, and Spencer Dinwiddie; and other athletes from the WNBA, MLS, UFC, and the American Ballet Theater.
The San Diego Padres are fine with Petco Park hosting the annual KAABOO festival beginning next September. The team has "taken strides to greatly improve how it protects the ballpark's playing surface," according to the San Diego Union-Tribune. Padres President of Business Operations Erik Greupner said that the team "upgraded the protective flooring it uses during in-season non-baseball events a couple years ago." The ballpark in recent years has hosted several concerts and Comic-Con with "no visible damage to the field.” KAABOO, an "upscale music, comedy, art and culinary festival" set to be held September 18-20, 2020, is heading to Petco "after being held for its first five years at the Del Mar Racetrack and adjacent fairgrounds." There is a multiyear contract to hold the event at the ballpark, and Padres season ticket holders will have "access to a special 'loyalty discount'" for the festival. Greupner said landing KAABOO is a "fulfillment of our promise to the people of San Diego that this publicly funded ballpark will (have) more than just baseball."
Esports will get a 24/7 mobile channel with VENN. According to USA Today, the online channel will debut next year with live studios in New York and Los Angeles and aims to be an online video home for esports and game culture - similar to that of ESPN for sports. The channel will be available as an app on streaming and mobile devices, and will offer channels on current video game and esports destinations such as Twitch and YouTube. VENN also plans to put itself on live streaming services such as Sling, YouTube TV, Hulu, and PlutoTV, as well as Snapchat and TikTok for a fittingly full digital presence. Although some of the content will be behind a paywall for enhanced viewer experiences, the majority of the content will be free to watch. In terms of funding, the network's co-CEOs announced $17 million and some of its investors include Twitch co-founder Kevin Lin, Riot Games co-founder Marc Merrill, Blizzard Entertainment co-founder Mike Morhaime, and Blizzard's former global esports head Amy Morhaime. With esports on the rise across pop culture, it is fitting that they will have a space with the best coverage 24/7 on an online platform.
The Travelers Championship in Connecticut raises $2.1 million for 150 local charities. According to the Hartford Courant, representatives from all of the charities — including the primary beneficiary, The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp — were at TPC River Highlands in Cromwell last Tuesday to receive their respective shares. Since taking over as the title sponsor in 2007, Travelers has generated a charitable haul of nearly $20 million. The Travelers Championship donates 100% of its net proceeds to charity, and this year's effort brings the amount generated by the tournament to nearly $20 million since Travelers became title sponsor in 2007. At least 750 charities have benefited over that time. Next year, the tournament will have a huge international name added to the list in the likes of Reigning PGA Tour Player of the Year Rory McIlroy, which will bring even more charity attention to the event.
Proctor and Gamble brand will buy 9,000 tickets to support equal pay for women. The consumer goods corporation’s Secret deodorant will spend $200,000 to buy 9,000 tickets to National Women’s Soccer League games in September and October as part of the brand’s growing effort to support equal pay and opportunity for women’ soccer players. According to Ad Age, Secret will buy 1,000 tickets at one home game for each of the league’s nine teams, offering seats to women’s organizations, youth sports teams, not-for-profit organizations, and other local partners. The brand will also give away Secret products, T-shirts and spirit towels to the first thousand fans at one game in each city. The effort follows an ad Secret launched in March promoting equal pay for the U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team and a $529,000 donation split across the 23 USWNT players in July after it won the Women’s World Cup. Brands have been backing women’s sports, which have also seen a resurgence of interest in broadcast time thanks to digital platforms.

Apple’s iOS 15 Updates to Facetime Puts Zoom and Teams on Notice
Apple has announced the latest updates for FaceTime which opens up more opportunities for users to share media with each other in a way that looks very much like what Zoom and Microsoft Teams offer, but with the signature Apple touches.
At its 2021 Apple Worldwide Developers Conference, Craig Federighi, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Software Engineering, unveiled the latest updates for FaceTime, the company’s proprietary video-call app.
Apple iOS 15 will bring improved video call quality by adding spatial Audio, which spreads out the voices of other call participants in the direction that they appear on the user’s screen. Apple says that this will enhance the experience and make video calls feel more like they are taking place in person. The company has also added voice isolation which ensures that the microphone prioritizes the user’s voice during a call and reduces distracting background noises. It is akin to how noise cancellation works in headphones, but for microphones on Apple devices.
During a call, FaceTime shows other users in an easily viewable grid view and uses the same size tiles for all call participants which makes it simple to identify who is speaking by highlighting their tile. Apple will also bring a portrait mode feature to FaceTime, which adds a blurred background and puts the focus on the subject.
Expanding into the video conferencing sphere which has seen explosive growth during the pandemic, Apple will also be giving users the ability to generate FaceTime links, positioning the service in direct competition with Zoom and Microsoft Teams. FaceTime links will make it easy for users to share a group call and also permits Android users to join in the call from their browser. Further, the links work on any device on any operating system. Apple notes that for those using a browser to join the call, FaceTime still uses end-to-end encryption for privacy.
To further connect users, the company has also introduced what it is calling SharePlay. This new feature allows users to share their screens with others, including while watching television and movies or while gaming. Users can watch movies and listen to music with others in real-time, which has been further enhanced with Apple’s partners through its SharePlay API. Apple says that at launch, multiple apps will work with SharePlay such as Disney+, Hulu, TikTok, NBA, ESPN+, Twitch, PlutoTV, and several others.
SharePlay can be used in the background while other apps are active thanks to a screen-in-screen feature, which doesn’t disrupt the call. Users will be able to use this screen share across different Apple devices and it can be applied not just for entertainment or communication but also for educational purposes, Apple suggests.
Apple has not provided a specific timeline for IOS 15’s release, but Apple historically publishes its iOS updates in the fall and developers generally can start testing the new features in a public beta shortly after WWDC concludes.
