World Tag League 2021 & Best Of The Super Juniors 28 Night 22 - 12/12/2021: Finals Set; NJPW Strong Episode 70 - 12/11/2021; Rocky Romero Teams With VLNCE UNLTD At ROH Final Battle
The final day of the World Tag League 2021 group stage has taken place, and you can see it now on NJPWWorld. Five teams were still in contention to advance when the day began, four of them against one another, while a fifth was a dark horse. Let’s see how that went down!
- 12/12/2021, Hiroshima Green Arena
Ryohei Oiwa TLD Kosei Fujita (10:00)
World Tag League 2021: Hiroyoshi Tenzan & Satoshi Kojima d. Minoru Suzuki [SZKG] & TAKA Michinoku [JTO] (Kojima > TAKA, lariat, 9:27)
World Tag League 2021: Togi Makabe & Tomoaki Honma d. Yuji Nagata & Tiger Mask IV (Makabe > Tiger, King Kong Knee Drop, 9:07)
World Tag League 2021: Hiroshi Tanahashi & Toru Yano [CHAOS] d. Bad Luck Fale & Chase Owens [Bullet Club] (Tanahashi > Owens, High Fly Flow, 9:53)
World Tag League 2021: Tama Tonga & Tanga Loa [Bullet Club] d. Great O-Khan & Aaron Henare [United Empire] (Loa > Henare, Magic Killer, 13:31)
World Tag League 2021: EVIL & Yujiro Takahashi [Bullet Club] d. Tetsuya Naito & SANADA [Los Ingobernables] (EVIL > SANADA, EVIL STO, 17:46)
World Tag League 2021: Hirooki Goto & YOSHI-HASHI [CHAOS] d. Taichi & Zack Sabre Jr. [SZKG] (Goto > Sabre, Goto-Shiki, 24:44)
With these wins, Goto/YOSHI-HASHI and EVIL/Yujiro advance to the Finals on Wednesday. The HoT team of course cheated to win, like we expect. They go through on head-to-head wins over both Naito/SANADA and Dangerous Tekkers. Both Hirooki Goto and EVIL have won this tournament multiple times (EVIL in 2017 & 2018 with SANADA; Goto in 2012 with “Machine Gun” Karl Anderson and 2014 with Katsuyori Shibata) although it has been a while for both. Should maybe be interesting?
It’s OK -- Naito deserves a big singles match at WK16 anyway, although nothing immediately leaps out as most of the second half of 2021 for him has been tag action (and his G1 Climax was interrupted). Guess we’ll see. Maybe next year for the Empire eh. Suzuki/TAKA suffer the ignominy of getting completely shut out; we suspected TAKA was just here to make up numbers, and that is completely the case here.
Final WTL2021 standings:
Goto/YOSHI-HASHI - 18pts (9W 0D 2L) - ***ADVANCE TO FINAL***
EVIL/Yujiro - 16pts (8W 0D 3L) - ***ADVANCE TO FINAL***
Dangerous Tekkers - 16pts (8W 0D 3L)
Naito/SANADA - 16pts (8W 0D 3L)
Guerrillas of Destiny - 14pts (7W 0D 4L)
Team Be-Bop - 14pts (7W 0D 4L)
O-Khan/Henare - 14pts (7W 0D 4L)
Fale/Owens - 12pts (6W 0D 5L)
TenKoji - 6pts (3W 0D 8L)
GBH - 4pts (2W 0D 9L)
Nagata/Tiger - 2pts (1W 0D 10L)
Suzuki/TAKA - 0pts (0W 0D 11L)
Last night’s episode of NJPW Strong on NJPWWorld continued the tapings from Detonation on 11/15/2021 from Riverside, CA.
Jonathan Gresham [FREE] d. Gabriel Kidd (Ground Headscissors, 13:47)
Will Ospreay, Jeff Cobb & TJP [United Empire] d. Ren Narita, Karl Fredericks & Clark Connors (Cobb > Fredericks, Tour Of The Islands, 13:24)
Tomohiro Ishii [CHAOS] d. Brody King [VLNCE UNLTD] (Vertical Drop Brainbuster, 13:37)
The main event was non-title for Ishii, and a hossfight to boot. The Empire were the a-holes you expect them to be. Gresham wrestled twice last night *ahem*, winning the ROH World Championship as that company’s possibly final champion, as Bandido vacated due to COVID-19.
On that note, Rocky Romero was at ROH Final Battle last night as an “NJPW Representative,” but was pressed into service with VLNCE UNLTD (Brody King, Homicide & Tony Deppen -- Chris Dickinson is rather injured at the moment) in a winning effort against EC3, Tracy Williams, Eli Isom & Taylor Rust, with King hitting a Gonzo Bomb on Isom for the win. The match featured a flurry of old finishers from previous ROH wrestlers like CM Punk, Nigel McGuinness, etc. The show also featured video messages from the likes of The Young Bucks, CM Punk, Adam Page and Bryan Danielson, as it really does seem as if they are treating this as the end of the road for the promotion.
The tour ender takes place this Wednesday at Tokyo Ryogoku Kokugikan. The full card has not yet been released, but we know the two important matches at least. This is also where Katsuyori Shibata’s big announcement will happen, and I am a little frightened of what it will be.
- 12/15/2021, Tokyo Ryogoku Kokugikan
World Tag League 2021 Final: Hirooki Goto & YOSHI-HASHI [CHAOS] v. EVIL & Yujiro Takahashi [Bullet Club]
Best Of The Super Juniors 28 Final: YOH [CHAOS] v. Hiromu Takahashi [Los Ingobernables]
