Your letters: It's never one thing
"It is never one thing that gets you to the top of the mountain or keeps you away." - Dan Bauer
Dear editor, As the Green Bay Packers “Love Boat” sails fearlessly into the shark invested waters of the NFL playoffs, there has been plenty of high praise for the captain and crew. Last week, in response to his suspension of Jaire Alexander, head coach Matt LaFleur said it is “Never just one thing,” and Sunday he doubled down on that statement by handing out game balls to everyone on the team…

Managing expectation
“Stress and anxiety come from too much expectation and too much ambition” Dalai Lama
The thing about expectation is it can really distort your enjoyment of the game. Yes, during a 3-game losing streak and dreadful season now is as good a time as any to seek inspiration from the likes of the Dalai Lama.
Fans of the New York Giants, Jets, and Seattle Seahawks began the season with little or no expectation of a great season. Low expectations = high satisfaction. Meanwhile, fans in Green Bay, Tampa and Los Angeles had reason to believe that their teams were Super Bowl contenders. 7-weeks into the season those high expectations are fueling plenty of panic and angst.
Grim outlook
The season isn’t even at the halfway point. Do any of us see the Packers turning this around?
Speaking of expectations, which Packer players are playing at or above expectations? It’s a short list that “may” include Rashan Gary, Kenny Clark, Randall Cobb (pre-injury) and Aaron Jones. Jones has been close to superlative considering his supporting cast. Clark and Gary have not been perfect but are mostly doing what they were projected to do.
Aaron Rodgers, AJ Dillon, Darnell Savage, De’Vondre Campbell, David Bakhtiari, Elgton Jenkins, Romeo Doubs, Christian Watson, Eric Stokes, Josh Myers, Jon Runyan Jr and Amari Rodgers headline a partial list of players playing somewhat, or dramatically below expectations.
It’s hard to set expectations on coaches, but initially, Rich Bisaccia seemed to be at or above expectations. While Matt LaFleur, Adam Stenavich, and most of the coaching staff are clearly under expectations. As for much criticized defensive coordinator Joe Barry, he’s been less than great, but how high were our expectations for him? This defense has “mostly” performed well enough to win. They’re not dominant, or good enough to carry the unexpectedly bad offense and special teams units alone.
Offensive
With off-season losses and injury recoveries, we knew the offense would struggle. But no one thought it would be this bad. It remains to be seen if, just shy of his 39th birthday, Aaron Rodgers is still good enough to carry his team. He looks jumpy, even in clean pockets. He’s missing more than his share of throws. NFL analysts say that beyond his erratic accuracy, his decision making is also poor as he’s often missing open receivers. As Rodgers himself has said, the Packers no longer have the margin of error this team once did. With the talent and experience gap at wide receiver and tight ends being average, at best, they need the Rodgers of 2014, ’20 and ’21. Thus far he’s not playing like a $50 million per year franchise QB.
The math doesn’t work
Subtract Davante Adams, superior play from Aaron Rodgers, thin talent at receiver and an up and down line and you can see things don’t add up for this offense. Add in erratic special teams to a defense good enough to win, but not dominant enough to carry a team,… the expectations created in Spring and Summer appear destined to generate more stress and anxiety.

That's on you Coach
What’s worse than an uninspiring game plan? Being too foolish or stubborn to change course when you see it’s not working. On Sunday in Minneapolis, Coach Matt LaFleur had numerous blinking light alerts that their plans were not getting it done. Mostly, they ignored those warnings.
Game plan changed too little, too late

Although they slowed the bleeding in the second half, MLF and his assistants didn’t do enough in-game modifications to salvage a winnable game. That’s on Le Fleur, and to some extent Joe Barry and Adam Stenavich. It’s hard to tell what exactly the offensive game plan was, but even the untrained eye would call it disjointed. Except for the second drive of the second half that got the Packers only score, the offense felt out of synch.  There were clearly not enough touches for their two best offensive playmakers, Aaron Jones and AJ Dillon. The lack of commitment to the run game provokes the age old question, is that on the Coach or the QB who’d rather throw it?
As for the defense, anyone who watched Justin Jefferson slice the Packers up on the opening drive could see something was not right. Maybe if it were better executed a zone defense could have worked. But when you’ve paid a cover corner like Jaire Alexander, doesn’t assigning him to lock down Jefferson just make more sense?
Not as simple as man-to-man coverage
Yes, having one guy play man coverage complicates things for the other 10 players. What wasn’t complicated was Jefferson moon-walking through the Packers zone defense.
My point, the Packers had nothing to lose my trying man-to-man coverage, yet they stuck with the zone and Jefferson put a 158 yards and 2 TD’s on them by halftime. Presumably the changes they made in the second half helped slow him down. But with a 17-point lead the Vikings also altered their approach to drain the clock.
Offense now Davante-less

In fairness, most football observers expected a bumpy adjustment to the loss of a proven star like Davante Adams. It’s likely we’ll see an offense that will sometimes look disjointed for many weeks to come.  Still, I expected Coach Matt LeFleur and Aaron Rodgers to be  highly aware of a need to be flexible to doing things differently. Hopefully we’ll see that flexibility in the coming weeks.
There’s a lot to like about Coach Le Fleur. 39-regular season wins in his first three years doesn’t happen by accident or with a coach who doesn’t know what he’s doing. Certainly it helps having a proven top flight QB like Rodgers, but that alone doesn’t win a team 39-games.
As much credit as Le Fleur gets for stellar regular seasons, his season openers and playoff performances have been pretty bad. One way to address those performances would be by making in-game corrections in real time to shift away from plans when they’re not working.

A few thoughts and a look at the Steelers game
Things have really quieted down at 1265 Lombardi Ave. since the drama of the offseason and shocking opening day loss. Two straight impressive wins go a long way. All of sudden everything is rosy for the Green Bay Packers. Now they just have to keep from getting overconfident again and go about winning the division and home field advantage again.
A couple things crossed my feeble mind this week. One was I can’t believe that Aaron Rodgers gets so upset by social media and/or main stream media and what they say about him. This week he said it was a “rough one” for those people who were saying he didn’t care about winning anymore. I don’t get why he would give a shit about that stuff. Does he need it to motivate himself at this stage in his career? No one took more criticism than Brett Favre with all his interceptions. Not once did I hear him complain about what people said. Just odd if you ask me.
The Packers are a popular team to bet on. Not only in the U.S. but around the world. Check out online casino reviews Canada to find the place to place your bet. Plenty of bonus or special plays available to get you started.
Offensive line shines
Matt LaFleur raised a lot of eyebrows when he fired offensive line coach James Campen to hire Adam Stenavich. The Marshfield native has done a fantastic job with the Packers’ offensive line since taking over. After six years of collage coaching Stenavich joined the San Francisco 49ers in 2017 as an assistant offensive line coach. Maybe he was recommended by LaFleur’s former buddy Kyle Shanahan, but whatever the case, it was a great hire.
The Packers’ offensive line is the sole reason they were able to beat the 49ers Sunday night. If not for them Rodgers couldn’t do what he did. Stenavich plugged in Yosh Nijman at left tackle to face one of the league’s best pass rushers. No problem. For once they didn’t have to rearrange the whole line to cover one injury. Yes, the game plan helped a ton, too, but the Packers offensive is still a strength. I think Stenovich will be an offensive coordinator some day.
Packers-Steelers
I won’t be around this weekend to make my much anticipated prediction. So I will do it now. The Packers face the Steelers and oddly enough this is Rodgers first start against them since beating the Steelers in the Super Bowl. He missed the last two meetings with a broken collarbone.
I don’t know what to expect in this one. The Steelers won at Buffalo and then lost at home to the Raiders and Bengals. Which team shows up? I think this could be a hard fought battle. I’ll say Packers 24, Steelers 19.
