Your letters: It's never one thing
"It is never one thing that gets you to the top of the mountain or keeps you away." - Dan Bauer
Dear editor, As the Green Bay Packers “Love Boat” sails fearlessly into the shark invested waters of the NFL playoffs, there has been plenty of high praise for the captain and crew. Last week, in response to his suspension of Jaire Alexander, head coach Matt LaFleur said it is “Never just one thing,” and Sunday he doubled down on that statement by handing out game balls to everyone on the team…

You know what I'm thinking about?
I'm thinking about how Bucky did not know that Sam gave his wings to Torres (he'd already left when that happened.) So the natural assumption should've been that Sam would just get them fixed and keep them.
But he got him the Wakandan suit anyway, because seeing him under Walker, where he came too damn close to killing him scared the shit out of Bucky. In that moment he realized that if anything happened to Sam he wouldn't survive it. He needed to get him more protection.
And so he asked the Wakandans for a favor even though he knew he was already on thin ice, even though he knew it could be the last thing they do for him. And even though Sam could've refused to take up the shield, he could've chosen to keep his old suit. Despite all that, Bucky did it anyway because making sure Sam is protected is more important than anything else.
If that's not love I don't know what is.

I live content in the knowledge that Bucky is unapologetically, openly in love with Sam. Showering him with gifts, flirting with him openly and not caring who finds out (one time during a press conference, and the internet collectively loses its mind), kissing him at any given opportunity (ESPECIALLY before and after missions) holding his hand as they walk down the street, checking him out every time he walks past him, going all out planning their dates, and using everything in his power to make sure that Sam knows how much he's loved.
That man becomes a different kind of insufferable when he's in love, and boy is he gone on Sam Wilson. Every day he asks himself how he got to be so damn lucky.
After 10 years of marriage, he'll still be asking him out on dates.
And he falls a little bit more (if that was even possible) when Sam always says yes.

3 Essential Moves For The Green Bay Packers in 2024
As the Packers entered the 2023 season, it was clear that general manager Brian Gutekunst had a plan for the future. Winning a championship seemed to be the team’s steadfast ambition. The 2024 season is the next chance for the Packers to fulfill their ambition. They’re clearly in a developing phase at the moment and are seemingly looking more at the 2024 season than focusing on the current 2023 season.
It’s possible to follow the development and take a look at some NFL picks for both the Packers and their NFL competitors. You can also check out the latest odds and predictions on all the NFL matches of the season. Perhaps next season will be the time to be betting on the Packers in the playoffs, but to get there, the team needs to adjust a few things in 2024.
Offensive Tackle
There’s no getting around the need for a new offensive tackle. There has been a hole in the offensive since Bakhtiari’s injury, even though Rasheed Walker has been filling in splendidly. There’s no guarantee that Walker will continue at this spot, so it might not be a bad time for the Gutekunst to consider adding a new star player on the offensive line. One suggestion could be the talented left tackle Joe Alt, currently playing at the University of Notre Dame. Another sublime player to consider is Jonah Williams, currently playing at the Cincinnati Bengals.
Interior Offensive Line
It looks like the entire offensive line could use some rearranging going into next year. At the moment, it seems like it is only left guard Elgton Jenkins who’s ensured a starting position in the upcoming season. It’s a known Packers’ strategy to move former offensive tackle players inside. This might be the model again this season. They do need some force and edge on the interior offensive line. A potential player could be Zak Zinter from Michigan. It could also be Connor Williams, currently playing at the Miami Dolphins, who could very possibly be just what the Packers need right now.
Wide Receiver
One thing that the Packer truly needs in order to excel is more receivers. Many of the young players who have gotten the chance this season have been delivering quite underwhelming performances. This is true for Jayden Reed, Romeo Doubs, and Christian Watson, who’ve all had their problems in one way or another. What the Packers could really need is at least one more receiver to help the team level up. One prospect could be Keon Coleman from Florida State. He’s been having quite the year, so it might not be the worst time for the Packers to snatch him. Then there’s Michael Pittmann Jr., who was also a popular name in the 2020 draft cycle. Back then, the Packers went with Love, but now might be the time to team up with Pittmann.
It’s going to be interesting to follow Gutekunst’s plans after this season and the changes he’ll surely make before entering the 2024 season with The Green Bay Packers. It could seem like there’s going to be some adjusting and transferring quite a few places in order for him to take the Packers to the highest level and all the way to the Super Bowl.

Now, the dreaded Atlanta game think I am going to format this one a little differently to flow better. Some big names were out of this game, and we lost one during the game. David Baktiari, Aaron Jones, and Christian Watson are all ruled out for this. On top of this, we lose Elgton Jenkis to a knee injury. These are all key contributors and big losses to the team. We started out with Rasheed Walker at left tackle for most of the first half. This move caused us to get beat on multiple run plays, making AJ Dillon look horrible because he was fighting tacklers as soon as the ball was handed off. This was also the reason we abandoned the run and went into quick throw mode. When Walker was finally replaced, the pass blocking got tremendously better, but the run blocking was still horrendous. Why we kept trying to run left I haven't figured out yet. Love did well again with his midfield throws and was very accurate when needing to bullet a pass somewhere. But when he needed to throw the deep ball, things were status quo, and he is still under or over throwing receivers. Three of these were sure touchdowns where receivers got wide open. The receivers looked a little lost and ran the wrong routes a few times, so we can't pin the whole passing game on Love or can we because on his quarterback sneak he used the wrong code word and gave us a five yard back up. Speaking of backups, what about that call to not kick a 57-yard field goal after the penalty. A delay of the game penalty. The offense all game looked unmotivated. The special teams looked flat, and the hole team had no sense of urgency in the first half, and that is on the coaching. We went into halftime, barely beating Atlanta, a team we were slated to beat. We only played about a quarter in a half of football in this game, and the third quarter was what we needed to bring to the table the whole game. Good blocking, good, running good defense. The Packers' defense looked good except for some critical dropped picks and some miscues early in the game, but as the game went on, they became gassed due to play calling on both sides of the ball. We started acting like we had the game won going into the fourth quarter, and the gas petal on offense let up, leading to three horrible drives putting a gassed defense in bad position. This was in combination with Joe Berry placing a bear defense on the field, which led to major mismatches in the passing game. This, in turn, caused us not to get off the field on two consecutive third downs and a fourth down that helped seal the game for the Falcons. We didn't actually lose the game until the last drive. Why did we stop utilizing our tight ends from halfway through the third quarter to the end of the fourth. We needed about 37 yards to get in the fieldgoal range. Utilize the big body sideline throws to the tight ends and chunk plays to the boundaries and kick a 60 yarder if you half to but at least try. We seemed to give up on the last drive. Going back to the run game utilizing one running back all game especially one that is designed for bruising and bashing not cutting would wear anyone down lack of substitutions a long with very poor run blocking was what caused the second to last drive to stall with three straight runs the dude was gassed. We need to get better about having confidence in our players and utilizing our rotation even when things aren't heading in the right direction. The coaching staff has to do better about putting these guys in the right position to win and in the Atlanta game, which was winnable for sure our coaches got out coached didn't take the necessary risks to win and didn't put our players in the best position to win. Attrition and intelligence win games, and we didn't win in either category this week.

“Black Boys Bloom Thorns First”: Volume 3, Chapter 1
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Summary:
Erik N'Jadaka Stevens. The top student in his graduating class at the Naval Academy. The youngest graduate to do so.
Erik excels at M.I.T. studying bioacoustics and sonic warfare. Hounded by Tony Stark to become his protege in Malibu, Erik sets out to forge a path that will take him into the military and Special Ops to complete his ultimate goal: Revenge for his mother and father and the overthrow of the Wakandan Royal House. With the help of his roommate, Disa, he may have found a way to balance first love and his need for justice.
NSFW. Smut. Mature Audience Only.

"My nose wide as the Red Sea (Red Sea) Lips full, fillers don't fill me (Fill me) Soon as my cousin killer's on trial (Woah) Family gon' pull 'em sitting courtside Godsend they say, we singing la-la-la Don't want no vultures on our si-i-ide Looking black as the messi-i-iah I got time…
When we die, where do my people go? To the stars where they can't steal your glow When we die, where do my people go? To the stars where they can't steal your glow Superpower"
Kirby—"Superpower"
Chocolate City.
That's what they called this particular section of dorm housing on the fourth floor of the building known as New House that Erik N'Jadaka Stevens found himself standing in at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
M.I.T.
"No man, this dude is different. He's twenty, but he acts way older. Quiet. Not real friendly…I don't mean in a bad way…he's just not gregarious. Grad student, not a freshman… I didn't ask. He applied to be here and Jay said he'd be a good fit. Oakland…I don't know…"
They were feeling him out already.
The lone voice he heard was in another room talking on a phone. The person wasn't even aware that Erik had entered House One that Chocolate City shared with iHouse, another identity-based undergraduate group who used the first two floors while they used the other three top floors.
Erik had money to get his own apartment or his own house if he wanted. Working for Tony Stark as an intern and a Stark Fellow for a year prior to M.I.T earned him money to live like an adult. Hell, he gave up a luxury apartment and tasteful eclectic furniture to move cross country and hunker down among thirty-one young Black men from around the world—correction, thirty young Black men, and one young white Italian man—who came to study a wide range of STEM-related fields.
Erik stared at the Chocolate City Mission Statement on his phone:
"Chocolate City is a brotherhood of MIT students and alumni who identify with urban culture and share common backgrounds, interests, ethnicities, and/or experiences. By cultivating a tradition of social, intellectual, character, and leadership development, the Brothers of Chocolate City exemplify a high standard of excellence which is founded on continual growth. We seek to enrich the MIT and greater global communities by embodying the principles of our brotherhood."
Taking a deep breath, Erik took time to meditate on what his purpose was in being there in that commons room space at that moment. It was a promise to his Uncle Bakari, Aunt Shavonne, and his Grandpop that he would spend at least six months in the dorm to have a proper group living experience that he didn't have at the Naval Academy. One that was less rigid and military guided. And not a juvenile hall. He shook off the memories.
Six months.
He gave his word.
Erik rolled the suitcase he had with him against a wall and the movement alerted the unseen speaker to end their call. A lanky fade-wearing young man with glasses and very light skin walked in from another room.
"Hi, Erik?"
"Yeah."
"Hey, welcome! I'm Rasheed. Junior year. Engineering. One of two Co-Chairs here. You look different from the Zoom chat…hair is longer…"
They shook hands and Erik ran his fingers over the short 'fro he was cultivating. It was one of the perks of being away from The Naval Academy and Stark Industries. He could let his shit grow freely. He could wear regular clothes. He could stand down.
"Growing it out for a minute."
"Are you wearing gold slugs?"
"Yeah," Erik said becoming annoyed with comments about his appearance.
The moment he left Tony Stark's employ he had pure gold panther slugs made for his bottom teeth to match the ones his Baba used to wear.
"Is this all your stuff?"
"Nah, I have some more out in my car."
"What do you drive?"
"1970 Chevrolet Chevelle."
"What? A muscle car. What color?"
"Black."
"I'll go down and help you bring the rest of your stuff up. Everyone is still moving in and finding the campus. We're having a dorm meeting with the Chocolate City crew before the big New House meeting downstairs later tonight."
"Okay. Cool."
Tumblr media
Exiting the elevator, they walked down the large hall on the first floor to the exit. Outside the afternoon air was crisp and Erik admired the brick of the building as they walked away from it to where he parked temporarily.
Rasheed whistled when he saw Erik's car.
"You sank some money into this bad boy."
"My grandfather had it for years. Fixed it up and passed it on to me. He still adds stuff to it if I ask him too."
"That's cool, bruh. Real cool."
Erik pulled out two more roller bags and a duffle, along with his computer bag from his trunk.
Tumblr media
"That's it?"
"Yep," Erik said.
"You can stay parked here until tomorrow night. That's when you have to use your residency parking passes and move it to your assigned area."
"Bet."
Moving his things back up into his assigned floor, more young men had arrived in their commons and introductions were made. One husky guy with a crimson and white MIT sweatshirt sat on a couch with his laptop playing music. The music switched up and a voice Erik recognized filled the room.
ButtaFly.
A DJ that hosted a popular MIT radio show. A DJ he listened to for months while he worked for Tony Stark.
"You are listening to the Cosmic Café…up next I'm going to have some new music by Kirby, Seinabo Bey, and I'll also throw in some classic Mutabaruka dub poetry. I want to give a big welcome to the new students arriving for the start of a new school year, especially to the young men of Chocolate City. My homegirl Jennifer is the Graduate Resident Tutor there so hey girl…I hear some really brilliant new students are over there, so welcome… welcome to all the folks over at New House…"
Erik stood in front of red and white hoodie.
"Where is the campus radio station at? Do you know?"
"WMBR?" hoodie asked.
"It's in the basement of the Walker Memorial Building," Rasheed said.
"Is that far from here?"
"Not really if you don't mind walking."
Erik pulled up the campus map on his phone.
"What room do I have?" Erik asked.
He followed Rasheed down a hall to the far end. Two twin beds, two desks, a decent window…
No one else had belongings there yet.
Erik picked the side away from the window and dumped his stuff.
"Thanks for helping me," Erik said.
"No problem—"
"What time is the meeting?"
"In two hours—"
Erik left the room with Rasheed at his heels.
"The rest of the guys will be back, and your roommate—"
"Later. I gotta go peep something first. I'll be back on time."
Erik passed by more Black male undergrads entering Chocolate City.
"Hey, Erik!"
Darcy, the other Co-Chair called out to him as Erik headed toward the elevator. A bright white smile on a rich round mahogany face tried to get his attention as Erik swept past.
"I'll be back!" he called out again.
Erik checked his cell phone. ButtaFly's show lasted for another thirty minutes. He stuck in earbuds to listen to her as he walked outside once more. Zipping up the bright orange windbreaker he had on, he used his phone GPS to guide him to his muse. The voice that haunted him for so many months when he worked for Stark. The voice that soothed him when he was in bed alone. The voice that seduced him when he pleasured himself in that big queen-sized bed he used to own.
Things were different now.
He had a twin bed and a male roommate. He had to share cooking duties with young men when he once ate with billionaire playboys and a Black Princess of Monaco. Erik used to fly on a private jet with Tony Stark anywhere in the world and had access to tech that these students were just trying to learn about and would never get to see on a higher level in a lifetime.
So different.
No more smoking weed and jerking off naked to Buttafly's voice in private trying to imagine what she looked like as he came in his hand with deep guttural moans. Very shortly, he would come face to face with the woman of his dreams.
A woman who helped guide him back to his ultimate purpose in life and she didn't even know it.

Spackle with trade?
It’s nail-biting time for guys on “the bubble.” The 53-man roster limit needs to be reached by this coming Tuesday. It’s not fun when people lose their jobs, or their dreams. But every pro-athlete knows the risks and competition for roster spots.
Some of the players released will surprise no one.  I’ll never forget when Forrest Gregg released QB Lynn Dickey, or when Ted Thompson shocked us by releasing Guard Josh Sitton. This year, my surprise cut prediction is Josiah Deguara, already one of many questionable Packer 3rd round draft picks.
TBA Packer
Who cares about fringe roster spots anyway? The curiosity should be on players not on the roster, yet.
Packers GM Brian Gutekunst should be looking to shore up a weak position from a position of strength. That means, deal an offensive tackle in the interest of landing a safety or tight end.
The Packers have, arguably, 5-offensive tackles that could start on 15-20 teams across the NFL. While quality tackles are in short supply the Packers boast David Bakhtiari, Zach Tom, Yosh Nijman, Rasheed Walker and Caleb Jones.  Although he’s less proven, Walker appears to have jumped Nijman on the depth chart. If the Packers could get value, trading Nijman makes the most sense.
Thin TE
The Packers future at tight end looks bright. The present looks a bit shaky. Off-season losses of Robert Tonyan and Marcedes Lewis, combined with a season ending knee injury to Tyler Davis leaves the Packers thin at tight end. Draft investments made in Luke Musgrave and Tucker Kraft are great, but rookies are notoriously slow contributors at the position. The current 3rd TE, Austin Allen, is just a guy, likely suited for the practice squad.
There are too many possible trade targets to guess, but trading for one feels quite possible. They need to replace Davis’s blocking and special teams reliabilty so I wouldn’t expect a big name. If Gutey doesn’t trade, expect a free agent signing like they did last year with Rudy Ford at Safety.
Safety looks unsafe
Speaking of dumpster fires, there’s the safety position.  Darnell Savage will start at one safety spot, due to marginal alternatives. After that you could throw a dart at the others and might hit a guy who will start or get cut. Jonathan Owens, Rudy Ford, Tarvarius Moore and Anthony Johnson Jr. have all looked forgettable, unless your idea of memorable is missed tackles and uninspired play. 7th round pick Johnson Jr. seems a roster lock, as Gutekunst is known to hang onto his picks. But after Savage, there is no obvious second starter.
Yosh Nijman re-signed as a restricted free agent, at a 2nd round tender, which means he’d be low risk at a manageable cost. So many NFL teams are starved for legit left or right tackles, it seems like moving Nijman could return value. I think it’s a move they can and will make. The only question: do they want a better safety, tight-end or to just bank some draft capital?

Gigi (for Grandma)
by Hakim & Rasheed
 R: When you found her
amidst the perpetual clamor of
ball busting and laughter
that is her seven boys
             H (waving):         and Aunt Deb
R: you were left to wonder
why if she is so quiet,
H: they are so damn loud.
  R: Because,
as I later learned from her
  H: your children
serve as a monument to your character.
How they treat themselves,
   Both: others and each other
H: says more about you than you ever could.
R: But don’t confuse her for the strong silent type
Grandma, now that you are an ancestor
Both: we ask your permission to speak for you.
H: Grandma always smelt like the calm after a Myrtle Beach hurricane
made of Butter Beans and back roads full of tradition.
Baptized in blood, sweat, and fears unwashed away in the moonshine swill
Both: but grandma still
H: and stay still prayed up
Always in the front pew
never in the back of the bus.
R: Lived her own love story
up and down the hallways
of the Appalachian Mountains
and the Atlantic Ocean.
Sent a handful of kids to war,
be it Vietnam,
H: or North Philly streets,
R: boxing rings
H: or marriage rings,
    R: a testimony
to the kind of upbringing
that has outlived her,
that has seen her through
all the way to the credits.
H: A life of service, on her feet
that deserves a standing ovation
almost as much as it desires to take a seat.
The family nurse
dishing miracles by the meal to the sick
type of cooking you get in line for
R: could teach Gordon Ramsey a few tricks
H: could make a multitude out of scratch.
R: You ever heard the one about…?
    H: The Parable of Priscilla?
Five loaves
and two catfish
Both: Grandma could break bread out of thin air!
   R: Even from her walker,
later wheelchair,
she let her resume
speak for itself
… in laughter.
    H: Even In momma jokes.
But greatgrandmama,
R: and her sweet potato pie,
H: was no joke.
    R: Her laugh
was a signature of approval
from a life well worked
and even weller lived.
H: But see my Grandma, my sign
Got so gangsta sometimes
she put the Double “G” in Gause and Gemini.
R: What he’s trying to say is
her smile was worth fighting for,
so much so stand-up became the family pastime.
Both: But if she woke up on the wrong side of Sunday
H: you might meet your Maker for the last time!
R: The type of saint that wouldn’t hesitate to grab an extension cord
H: to keep the lights on…
R: The type of saint that would send you for your own switch
H: to cut the light on!
R: Could have a church fan flapping like a hummingbird wing,
raise your hand if my grandma taught you why the caged bird sings
Both: ...she sang cause she fly.
H: But don’t let that church hat fool you,
her floss is all grind
and grace.
The wife of
R: "Take all you eat,
but eat all you take."
    Both: She lived through
sharecropping, the Great Migration, and Ronald Reagan,
JBM, Move, and Philly’s 1st Black Mayor
9-11, Grandpa's cancer, the 1st Black President
thirteen greatgrandchildren later…
R: It makes her more than just a Grandmother
Both: she was history
H: in the making.
H: Not an author, a preacher
or a writer,
she a “Boy, you better write til you got arthritis”
R: She was more than a short story, more like a novel
she was a gospel
on to her next chapter…
Both: So all that’s left to say is,
R: “Say Hi to Grandpa,
H: Grandma.”
