Mumbai: Lata Mangeshkar music college launched on her 93rd birth anniv

In a fitting tribute, the 'Bharat Ratna Lata Dinanath Mangeshkar International Music College & Museum' was inaugurated at the Kalina Campus of the University of Mumbai, here on Wednesday -- on the 93rd birth anniversary of the melody queen who passed away on February 6, officials said. Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis did the honours in the presence of a large number of ministers, political leaders and music personalities like Usha Mangeshkar, Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia, Meena Khadilkar, Adinath Mangeshkar, Ashok Patki, Sonu Nigam, Anup Jalota, Pankaj Udas, Mayuresh Pai, Taufiq Qureshi, Lalit Pandit, and others. With this, the University will offer the first six certificate courses of one-year each in Hindustani classical music, Indian flute, tabla, sitar, harmonium/keyboard and sound engineering will be launched with an initial intake of 150 students. In August this year, the Maharashtra government had handed over a 7,000-square metre plot owned by the Directorate of Libraries in the Kalina campus of Mumbai University for the music college. However, as a temporary measure, till the college gets its own building and other amenities, it will function from the P.L. Deshpande Academy, Shinde had said. Lata Mangeshkar desired to start such a music college in memory of her father, Master Dinanath Mangeshkar, and the former Maha Vikas Aghadi government's former Minister Aditya Thackeray had shown her the plot which she had liked. After her demise, the ex-CM Uddhav Thackeray had announced that a world class music college would come up in memory of 'Lata didi', as she was known during her lifetime. Later, the government had set up a 14-member expert advisory board for the college courses which included Chairman Hridaynath Mangeshkar, Usha Mangeshkar, Adinath Mangeshkar, Suresh Wadkar, Mayuresh Pai, Zakir Hussain, A.R. Rahman and other personalities. To start with, the teaching posts will be on an emoluments basis and clerical/ typist jobs will be filled on an external basis, machinery, equipment and other requirements will be purchased, all at a cost of nearly Rs 1.75 crore per month. Beneficiaries of Maharashtras Ladli Behen Yojna receive July August instalments

The Maharashtra government on Thursday started extending the benefits of the ‘Ladli Behen Yojna’ before the stipulated deadline of Raksha Bandhan on August 19. After a spar over remarks by two MLAs of the ruling alliance demanding votes for cash, the Mahayuti bloc started transferring money to the accounts of eligible beneficiaries across the state to counter the criticism by the Opposition. Tipped as one of the most popular flagship schemes of the NDA-led Mahayuti alliance, the ‘Mukhyamantri Ladki Behen Yojna’ was set to be inaugurated on August 17 ahead of the Raksha Bandhan to benefit the underprivileged women in the state. However, Maharashtra Chief minister Eknath Shinde informed that the transfer of instalments, Rs 3,000 each, for July and August has been initiated as a trial run by the concerned authorities. Following the transfer of the money, the beneficiaries across the state are thanking the government for delivering the amount within the stipulated period of time. Lata Patil, the first beneficiary of the Ladli Behen Yojna from Worli constituency represented by Shiv Sena (Uddhav) MLA Aditya Thackeray, was initially doubtful about getting the money. However, she was overwhelmed after the money was transferred within one month of her enrolment for the scheme, Patil said while speaking to India Today. On the other hand, Opposition parties are not letting go of any opportunity to take potshots at the most ambitious scheme of the government. In Solapur, Congress MP Praniti Shinde warned women that all the ‘Laadli behen’ (dear sisters) will turn stepsisters once the Assembly polls are over, as she fears that the popular scheme will be scrapped. Eknath Shinde picking up chits to name tiger cubsMumbai: A seemingly innocuous event to name three tiger cubs sparked a political row in Maharashtra on Sunday after a chit apparently carrying the name ‘Aditya' was taken back and replaced with another one.Opposition leaders linked the name to Aaditya Thackeray, who was a minister in the Uddhav Thackeray-led Maha Vikas Aghadi government that collapsed last year after a rebellion by present Chief Minister Eknath Shinde resulted in an acrimonious split in the Shiv Sena.The incident unfolded in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar city when Chief Minister Shinde, his Deputy Ajit Pawar and state forest minister Sudhir Mungantiwar were invited to a function to name two male and one female tiger cubs.After Mr Shinde took out one chit from a glass bowl, visuals of the event showed, Ajit Pawar was requested to pick a chit from another container.With a grin, Mr Pawar showed the chit to someone. A voice in the background could then be heard saying “it's Aditya” and suggesting that Mr Pawar should go for another.Mr Pawar picked a second chit and the name on it – Vikram – was read out.
