“A BREATH OF FRESH AIR”
with Sandy Kaye
WED 2:00PM‬ & FRI 10:30PM
This week:
CHRISTMAS SPECIAL
Canned Heat emerged in 1966 and was founded by blues historians and record collectors Alan “Blind Owl” Wilson and Bob “The Bear” Hite.
The band attained three worldwide hits, “On The Road Again”, “Let’s Work Together” in 1970 and “Going Up The Country” in 1969, all of which became rock anthems.
They have played more festivals, biker gatherings and charity events than any other band in the world. They and/or their music have been featured on television and in films.
Now, more than fifty years later and with forty albums to their credit, Canned Heat is still going strong.
Fito’s book, “LIVING THE BLUES” tells the complete and outrageous Canned Heat story of “Music, Drugs, Death, Sex and Survival” along with over 100 captivating pictures from their past.
Adolfo "Fito" de la Parra joins us this week to share tales of his incredible journey.

Carlos Santana needed Supernatural. I know – what? Why would a musician of his stature have to do something like this? Well, I would suggest that a record in the vein of Supernatural introduces many to an important musician by showing his influence. For instance The Healer by John Lee Hooker – I maintain Carlos Santana working there got him a clue for his later triumph – might not be his best LP. However, a lot of people noticed the platter, because the entire thing was meant as Hooker's commercial comeback. Of course, that did occur – a multitude of disc of that sort do succeed – and we should also be thankful The Healer served as a good entry point for Mr. Hooker. Yes, these albums are basically the SparkNotes for their musicians.

Adolfo ”Fito” de la Parra checkade in…

Don’t forget to boogie! Boogie with Canned Heat, the second album by Canned Heat, was released on Jan. 21, 1968. The album also heavily featured the talents of Malcolm Rebbenack aka Dr. John.
It contains mostly original material, unlike their debut album. It is the band's most commercially successful album, reaching number 16 in the US and number 5 in the UK.
A significant reason for its success is because it includes the top 10 hit "On the Road Again", one of their best-known songs. "Amphetamine Annie", a warning about the dangers of amphetamine abuse, also received considerable airplay. "Fried Hockey Boogie" was the first example of one of Canned Heat's boogies, or loose jams that the band reworked as “Woodstock Boogie” when they played the festival in August 1969.
This was the first album of their classic lineup where each member adopted a nickname:
Bob “The Bear” Hite – lead vocals
Alan “Blind Owl” Wilson – slide guitar, harmonica, lead vocals on "On the Road Again" and "An Owl Song"
Henry “Sunflower” Vestine - lead guitar
Larry “The Mole” Taylor – bass guitar
Adolfo “Fito” de la Parra – drums
The album also features pianist Sunnyland Slim on “Turpentine Moan.” Dr. John plays piano on the other tracks and did the horn arrangements.
Happy 54th birthday to “Boogie With Canned Heat”!

An excerpt from Fito de la Parra’s book “Living the Blues,” on handling Alan at airports:
Flying with Alan was a trip in more ways than one. First, we had to find him to get him on the plane, because a lot of times there are marshes, fields or vacant lands near airports. They would be calling our flight, and all of a sudden Skip or Bear would realize that Alan was gone. Usually he was either sitting in his cross-legged yoga position in some remote corner of the airport, studying his books and wrapping his hair around his fingers, or else he had gone off to the boondocks to study the plants and animals there. Skip, Bear and the roadies would go running across the airport to the nearest field or marsh or whatever and haul him back, sometimes with big chunks of wet mud on his clothes from laying on the ground so he could get close enough to see some plant.
When we found him, we had to watch while he turned in his ticket to the attendants. We could never teach him about taking care of papers. The only way he knew to save them was to wad them up in a ball and stuff them in his pockets with the leaves, rocks and soil samples he collected. Skip or Bear would hustle him up to the gate, in his muddy nerd clothes, and he would turn in this wrinkled, dirty ball of paper that looked like it had been a year underground in a garbage dump. The attendant would usually hold the ticket as far away from herself as she could.
On a European tour, in Sweden we had to haul Alan out of a swamp near the airport. He wanted to stay because he was sure he had found some kind of rare oak tree or something. He got on the plane carrying bunches of leaves and twigs, very muddy, smelling very bad. We spent the whole trip with the other passengers glaring at him and muttering about us.
This was after Alan had decided to learn the names, in Latin and English, of all the plants and trees in the world. He would carry these enormous botany books with him on tour, gigantic tomes the size of big dictionaries. While the rest of us were partying and getting wasted and looking for girls, he would be in the woods or someplace, collecting leaves and things to put in the books on the pages that discussed that specific plant or tree so that he could study the actual sample alongside the scientific definition.
When we landed in New York on our way home from Europe, the customs people see this bunch of hippie rock musicians coming in and decided that if anybody has dope on them, we're the ones. So they start searching all our bags and the poor guy they assigned to Alan shakes his books and out fall all these leaves and pine cones and dried moss and wet roots from swamps in Sweden. The inspector was pretty sure this was some new kind of dope, but he couldn't figure out what it was, and whether Alan was smoking it or injecting it or what.
