Iconic Candy Magazine Ad. The primary purpose of the print ad was to promote a new but retro - revival product.
The ad were aimed to run in a confectionery business magazine, e.g. for the industry, not consumers. The idea was to come up with something playful but clear.

Welcome to the Zine O’Biology Vol.2!
A multi-fandom Star Trek Zine.
Whats New? This time we are organizing the artist/writer partnerships like a bang! We want to avoid some confusion from last time and think this will be best way to do that.
Do you have strong opinions on Vulcan fra’als, Cardassian tails, or how the heck Trill symbionts reproduce? We want to hear from you!
The Zine O’Biology is a fictional comparative xenobiology academic journal set in the Star Trek universe. If you’ve always wanted to wax eloquent for up to 3000 words about your theories on alien biology, welcome to your new home!
We want all your theories about all your favorite aliens! This is a friendly but competitive academic journal where the content of every paper is a little bit suspicious (is this paper based on rumor or fact? What is the methodology?) and some competing authors leave snarky comments on one another’s work. So just like a real academic journal, except ours features the Great Green Anthurium.
We welcome xenobiology articles on all Star Trek aliens from all series!
The final format will be a PDF that you can scroll at your leisure or print at home in order to have a physical copy of the Zine. (This way there is no money involved.)
--SEEKING SUBMISSIONS FOR--
Alien biology articles
Alien biology artwork
In-Universe advertisements
Letters to the editor
ALIEN BIOLOGY ARTICLES
How do Andorian genders work? Are Cardassians actually lizards? Why do Klingons have so many redundant organs? What’s the biological purpose of Bajoran nose ridges? What’s the best cement mix for emergency surgery on a Horta?
You’ve been pondering alien biology for years. This is your chance to infodump all your favorite theories to an eager audience of your fellow nerds!
Articles will be separated into two categories: reproductive biology or general biology. Yes, we also want all your theories on what every species is packing downstairs…and how they use it.
Journal articles should be fun and engaging, but also written in your interpretation of a pseudo-academic style, since this is a highly respected Federation xenobiology journal. If you want to keep things more lighthearted and less academic, check out the section on Letters to the Editor.
ALIEN BIOLOGY ARTWORK
If you have independent illustrations about alien biology we would love to see them! If you would like to provide illustrations for one of our journal articles, we will open up bidding so that you can find the perfect article for your ideas!
JOURNAL ADVERTISEMENTS
Even in a post-need future, academic journals will need a little extra funding. Submit your ads for Ferengi Oomox Creme, Self Sealing Stem Bolts, Gently Used Federation Technology, and, of course, “reproductive aids.” The weirder the better! Have fun with it!
All art needs to be printable at high resolution
ART Sizes:
Full page: 4.5"w x 7.5"h
Column: 2.21"w x 7.5"h
Half Page: 4.5"w x 3.75"h
Square: 2.21"w x 2.18"h
Banner: 4.5"w x 1"h
LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Do you have a great idea, but it’s not enough to fill out a 3000 word article? Submit it as a “reaction” to a previous journal article. Feel free to lay into a mythical researcher who does NOT understand why their biological theory is wrong and yours is right!
Max length 1500 words. Enjoy making these plenty frothy!
WANT TO GET INVOLVED, BUT YOU’RE NOT A WRITER OR ARTIST?
WE NEED:
Graphic designers to help with Zine layout
Social media promoters
Alien art and article wranglers (ie: get your fannish friends involved!)
--HOW TO GET INVOLVED--
Fill out the Art or Writing Google Form letting us know your interests or reach out to the Editor in Chief at [email protected]

One of my favorite fun historical through lines is that the original co-illustrator for Dick and Jane who also co-created the branding for Elmers Glue is also very likely the indirect but influential progenitor of a great majority of furry art and culture. and he doesn't even have a wikipedia page. The story is as follows:
A team of designers create Elsie the cow as the mascot of the Borden dairy company, later giving her a husband named Elmer in branding. Elsie was extraordinarily popular and was portrayed in tons of print advertising and even licensed media. The most well-remembered and beloved of these advertisements were done by a popularly unknown and uncredited illustrator named Keith Ward together with a great deal of other commercial illustrations
(Ward's early work in commercial illustration: children's books and advertising)
The scale of ward's contribution to Elsie and Elmer is somewhat murky, particularly since most credits go to the contributors with greater status at Borden. Personally, I see it as largely a collaboration between Ward and several unknown others under art director David William Reid.
(Ward's work vs Reid's work)
Elsie eventually fell out of popular consciousness after rebranding, but Elmer lives on as the mascot of Elmer's glue, originally a subsidiary of Borden as glue could be produced as a byproduct of industrial dairy. Modern Elmer's glue is synthetic, but retains the iconic mascot and design.
(Elmer's evolution from a more Ward-like design its current iteration)
Ward would later go on to illustrate for an American adaptation of Reynard the Fox by Harry J. Owens, again, miraculously uncredited on the cover. His name appears once, on the title page, and the lavish biography on the back of my copy fails to even mention the illustrations.
(Ward's work for the Scandalous Adventures of Reynard the Fox)
These works are particularly notable as much later, Ken Anderson of Disney was working on conceptualizing a Disney adaptation of Reynard, which is a very interesting and messy story for another time. In short, he and his team drew many inspirations from many many places, but with Ward being relatively more known and respected in the industry and having worked on a Reynard book in a similar style to what Disney wanted, his work was one of the most influential on the development of the film. The Reynard part was eventually scrapped (those who are familiar with the story and character will not be surprised), but a lot of the designs and even layouts were reused for Robin Hood. If you've ever wondered why they made him a fox, that's why.
(Bill Peet's and Ken Anderson's Reynards bear a striking resemblance to Ward's)
There's a lot more to the inspiration than just the designs, many plot points and layouts from Reynard, and their depictions by Ward, remain in Robin Hood (they unfortunately do not fit in this post). Its likely that finding such a clear starting point for their film in Ward's book had a hand in salvaging the Disney Reynard project and leading to the complete, although troubled, completion and release of Robin Hood.
And the rest is furstory! While there are certainly many other Disney animal features that have made their mark on the fandom, Robin Hood's influence is particularly notable for being the most popular of the most anthropomorphic animal-focused animations in contrast to the commercial underdogs of the Great Mouse Detective and many of Don Bluth's films, and more conventionally presented talking animals like those of the Aristocats and the Jungle Book. Isn't that interesting!

I'm gonna be 100% real about why I quit graphic design. My university was obsessed with branding and advertising. That was the main goal of every class I took. And the idea of selling something makes me ill. I don't care about selling a brand. I don't care about focus groups, I don't care about designing a brand to be sold, I don't care about target market studies, I think advertising is inherently violating and intrusive these days and I refuse staunchly to be part of any process of it. Surely I enjoyed the process of designing something but the idea of SELLING that something makes me irrationally angry. The world is dying and all you care is about selling your mediocre kitkats and soda to the point you put ads in the streets and tv and on every video you see. I wanted to do layout for books and printed materials. I wanted to make texts and images friendly for all kinds of needs to communicate ideas effectively. But no I was supposed to fucking design a stupid brand that nobody was gonna use and bust my ass designing fictional advertising campaigns where every attempt at originality or personality I tried to put in were shot down by my teachers because they wouldn't sell. The only good thing I made in 7 years of university was my graduation project bc I didnt make it with the intention of selling it but bc I finally got to do something I enjoyed for myself. I fucking hate branding and advertising I hate them so much

DSMP Pin-Up Calendar - Details and FAQ
TIMELINE:
Applications Open: August 11
Applications close: August 25
Invites to artists sent: August 30
Printing: Late October DSMP Pin-Up Calendar is an artistic celebration of the characters of the DSMP, drawing inspiration from the creativity of the fandom community, "hot guy" calendars, action movie posters, classic pin-ups, vintage advertisements, art prints, and more, in the form of a 2024 calendar. FAQ:
Which characters are going to be in the calendar? There are 38 people on the DSMP, so we're not going to be able to fit them all. We're going to attempt to build a portfolio that covers as many characters as possible, but we're not deciding on which characters specifically until we know which artists we have and what ideas for images they have.
Are the characters played by minors involved? There are no current minors involved with the DSMP, but we understand that the creators being underage for much of the server's run puts a bit of a damper on enjoying more salacious images of the characters. In cases where artists decide they want to draw a character who was underage for a significant period of time of the DSMP, we'll ask that their images tend closer to "action movie poster" or "vintage advertisement" than "pin up".
Is NSFW allowed? We want this calendar to be fun and a bit cheeky, and we want to allow the artists creative liberty, but we also want you to be able to display this without your parents going "what the hell"? No actual NSFW will be part of the calendar.
I want to draw [x] character, can I draw them? During the application and planning process, we'll ask artists to indicate which characters they want to draw. We will then draw up a plan for the calendar, and artists will be assigned a character or characters based on the ones they selected.
Do the images have to stay canon-compliant? Can I draw my own design for a character? We encourage you to bring your own designs to the table, and feel free to set the characters within a canon setting OR an au.
How will I get the calendar? We will be printing a bound calendar through a central source, probably Mixbox, and we will also be making a PDF version that you can print yourself locally, if you have a different print source in mind or if the website doesn't ship to your country.
How much money are you making from this? We are not making any money from this project. If you buy the calendar through a source that asks you to pay for it, it will be priced at-cost, so you will only be paying for the cost of the printing and shipping. The mod team will see no profit from it.
How does the process work? We are going to open the calendar up to applications, and then we're going to go through the apps and select artists that can draw a wide variety of characters. Once in the discord, we're going to ask artists to pitch us a variety of ideas, and then the mod team is going to select pitches to make sure we, ideally, get a variety of different images and characters represented. We will then go through sketches, final, layout, and then release it for you all to buy or print!

The Iceberg of Online Manga - A Reading List and Print Wishlist
We get a lot of manga in English, but that's only the tip of the iceberg. We get a hell of a lot of fan translated manga, but even that doesn't cover the whole thing. Separated by language and culture, the "untapped" potential of manga is foreign to a lot of readers, myself included really. But it's because of that deficiency that I decided to start taking a look at interesting fan translated titles to find series to recommend to publishers (and potentially read), so this is a sneak peek into my ever-growing list.
It's also an open request for people to share their favorites from the online manga sphere! As a single person it's impossible to find all the hidden gems, so being able to share titles between one another can really help widen horizons.
Sui and Neri of the Twilight Planet / Tasogare-Boshi No Sui To Neri
In a way, it reminds me of Girls Last Tour, a sunsetting planet that explores the oddity of a du in their life. Not quite as bittersweet or contemplative through what I've seen so far, but still very pretty and detailed. Lots and lots of hand drawn background art, and some really good layouts and paneling.
Poison Poison Forest Forest /Doku Doku Mori Mori
Mushroom on Mushroom violence, with a healthy side of grim visuals. It's got all the punch you could expect, and has a pretty novel approach to what you could consider a revenge story. Still early on so not a mountain of stuff to go off of, but at the very least what there is is good.
Captain Momo's Secret Base / Momo Kanchou No Himitsu Kichi
Tsuruta Kenji, the mastermind behind the art of Emanon (and other series), need I really say more? Regardless, with Tsuruta's art behind a lighthearted and curious series of a woman travelling through space alone with a cat, it's an undeniably enjoyable ride. Though do be warned, there is quite a bit of nudity featured as Momo prefers going commando to wearing clothes.
Every Every Night / Yona Yona Yona
An incredibly strikingly designed robin hood-esque story, Yona and her crew go on nightly missions to try and steal back art that was originally stolen by a corrupt police force. Creative, expressive, fun, and impressively detailed and unique, it's got quite a bit of potential!
The Feared Witch of Tasihou / Taishou Kitan Majo
Mixing the Western practices of Witchcraft with a Taishou-era Japan setting? A cultural combination that I'm truthfully surprised we haven't really seen yet. Add onto that the incredibly unique and sketch-like art style (and the wonderful color pages) and it's just a super easy pickup.
Welcome to Hotel Metsäpeura / Hotel Metsäpeura e Youkoso
A little hard to explain succinctly, but this is the story of a trio, two men and a teenager who they find standing outside their hotel in the Finnish wilderness in the middle of Winter. Characters with... interesting pasts, it's a story about providing not just a house, but a home to this young boy on his own.
The Ends of A Dream / Yume no Hashibashi
This is one that I'm really quite desperate to get in print. It's an emotional story of a pair as they retrace their forbidden romance through the years that have evaded them as they reach the end of their lives. A painfully beautiful concept that I really hope to see licensed someday.
Will You Clean This For Me? / Kirei Ni Shitemoraemasuka
Alright, something a little more light and fun! A story of a laundry (though it's really sorta general cleaning) shop as they go about their daily life, even offering a few tips and tricks to better cleaning things. Simple idea that has some pretty clear care put into it, and is just the right thing to relax with.
Amber Days and Golden Nights / Kohaku no Yume de Yoimashou
Let's keep the good vibes rolling! Another specific interest series, this time about craft beer. Kenzaki Nana's a burnt out employee at a Kyoto advertising firm, but happens to stumble across the Shirokuma bar. With just one night she ends up pulled into the world of craft beer, and our story begins! Very fun and light, and a really cool area to see explored by manga.
The Dragon, The Hero, and The Courier / Ryuu to Yuusha to Haitatsunin
Nothing like some good old comedy at the expense of someone else. Yoshida, a half elf, is a mail carrier for the Imperial City of Idazig that will deliver mail to anyone, anywhere. With the breadth of fantasy and middle-ages history expressed early on, there's a lot of creative potential for humor alongside the really wonderfully scratchy and sharp art.
Deep Sea Aquarium Magmell / Magmell Shinkai Suizokukan
My friend Phantom would kill me if this wasn't on the list. Anyways, it's a series about a deep sea aquarium employee in Tokyo. Very cool, very informal, and incredibly beautiful. I love how much they work with blacks and darkness in the art.
A Coffee Shop in the Unwaking Town / Samenai Machi no Kissaten
I love stories that are incredibly odd and quiet, and this is no exception. Suzume one day finds herself unable to wake up, stuck in the unwaking town Lutetia. It's in this town that she works at the coffee shop known as 'Quatre'. From the moment I laid eyes on it I knew I'd enjoy it, a unique concept paired with standout art, it has such a comfortable feeling to its experience (as well as offering a few recipes).
Living In an Antiquarian Bookstore of The Karakida Family / Karakida-ke no Kosho Gurashi
A simple story about three girls inheriting their grandfather's shop in the heart of the largest collection of used bookstores, Kanda-Jinbouchou. A very calm and borderline mundane story that is supplemented with some truly beautiful art.
And that's all this list has in it for now! Of course I've got more I can chat about, but I thought these to be the most promising in my perusing of the internet. Best of all though? All of these are available (to some degree) on MangaDex! If you want to give them a shot they're there. And really, do feel free to add to this list with your own online finds, I'd love to find all sorts of unique and creative manga that we don't get to hear about in the English sphere!

Exploring the Essence of Graphic Design: A Journey into Visual Communication

Exploring the Dynamic World of Graphic Design: A Comprehensive Overview
Introduction:
Graphic design is a multifaceted discipline that intertwines creativity, technology, and communication to visually convey messages, evoke emotions, and inspire action. In this comprehensive exploration, we delve into the intricacies of graphic design, tracing its historical roots, examining its fundamental principles, and elucidating its evolving role in contemporary society.
Historical Evolution:
The history of graphic design dates back to ancient civilizations, where visual symbols and imagery were used to communicate ideas and concepts. From Egyptian hieroglyphics to illuminated manuscripts of the Middle Ages, graphic design has played a pivotal role in human communication throughout the ages. The advent of the printing press in the 15th century revolutionized the field, allowing for mass production of printed materials and the proliferation of typography and layout techniques.
The Industrial Revolution further propelled the evolution of graphic design, with advancements in printing technology enabling the creation of posters, advertisements, and packaging designs. The early 20th century witnessed the emergence of influential movements such as Art Nouveau, Bauhaus, and Art Deco, which shaped the aesthetic principles and design philosophies of the era.
Fundamental Principles:
At its core, graphic design is governed by a set of fundamental principles that guide the creation of visually harmonious and effective compositions. These principles include:
Composition: The arrangement of visual elements within a design space to achieve balance, unity, and hierarchy.
Typography: The art and technique of selecting and arranging typefaces to enhance readability, convey tone, and evoke emotion.
Color Theory: The study of color interactions and psychological effects, informing the use of color palettes to evoke specific moods and convey meaning.
Contrast: The juxtaposition of elements with differing visual properties to create emphasis, depth, and visual interest.
Balance: The distribution of visual weight within a composition to create stability and harmony.
Hierarchy: The organization of elements to guide the viewer's attention and convey the relative importance of information.
Gestalt Principles: The theory of perceptual organization, which explores how the human mind perceives and interprets visual stimuli, influencing the arrangement of elements in design.
Applications and Disciplines:
Graphic design encompasses a wide array of applications and disciplines, ranging from print media to digital platforms. Some of the key areas of graphic design include:
Branding and Identity: Creating cohesive visual identities that reflect the personality, values, and aspirations of organizations and brands.
Advertising and Marketing: Developing compelling campaigns and collateral materials that effectively communicate messages and engage target audiences.
Editorial Design: Designing layouts for books, magazines, newspapers, and other publications, balancing text and imagery to enhance readability and visual appeal.
Web and User Interface Design: Crafting intuitive and visually engaging interfaces for websites, mobile apps, and digital platforms, prioritizing user experience and accessibility.
Motion Graphics and Animation: Integrating dynamic visuals, typography, and effects to create engaging motion graphics, videos, and interactive experiences.
Environmental and Exhibition Design: Conceptualizing immersive spatial experiences, signage, and installations that enhance brand presence and engage audiences in physical environments.
Technological Advancements:
The advent of digital technology has revolutionized the practice of graphic design, empowering designers with powerful tools and techniques for creating and manipulating visual content. Graphic design software such as Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign have become indispensable tools for designers, offering unparalleled flexibility and precision in design execution.
Furthermore, advancements in digital printing, 3D rendering, and augmented reality have expanded the possibilities of graphic design, enabling designers to explore new mediums and push the boundaries of visual storytelling. The rise of online platforms and social media has also transformed the landscape of graphic design, providing designers with global reach and unprecedented opportunities for collaboration and exposure.
Challenges and Opportunities:
Despite its ubiquity and relevance in modern society, graphic design faces a myriad of challenges in an increasingly digital and interconnected world. The democratization of design tools and the proliferation of online marketplaces have led to commoditization and downward pressure on pricing, challenging the sustainability of professional practice.
Moreover, the rapid pace of technological innovation and evolving consumer preferences necessitate constant adaptation and upskilling for designers to remain competitive in the field. However, these challenges also present opportunities for innovation, collaboration, and diversification, as designers explore new niches, embrace emerging technologies, and champion ethical and sustainable design practices.
Conclusion:
In conclusion, graphic design is a dynamic and ever-evolving discipline that encompasses artistry, technology, and communication. From its humble origins in ancient civilizations to its pivotal role in shaping contemporary culture and commerce, graphic design continues to inspire, inform, and challenge our perceptions of the world around us.
As we embark on this journey through the world of graphic design, we celebrate the creativity, innovation, and passion that define this vibrant field, while acknowledging the profound impact it has on our lives and our collective imagination. As designers, creators, and storytellers, we have the power to shape narratives, ignite emotions, and transform ideas into reality through the art of graphic design.

Also "scanning books" is what people see but that means:
Running (sometimes designing!) the book scanning system, the library website, and the interlibrary loan system + maintaining those machines that run the scanning/software
Writing up the summaries of books on the website
Designing displays and organizing books by subject and alphabetical author order
Researching and selecting books to be added to the catalog before they have even been released to the public, picking with summer reading programs and school projects in advance (as well as elections, the pandemic non-fiction books and the hobby books that were more in demand during the pandemic), and predicting how many copies of the books you need to buy for each book
Weeding (taking out books not frequently read)
Printing labels, labeling, and putting protective dust jackets on books
Grant writing to get funding for the library and even campaigning to the public to get them to endorse more library funding in local elections
Learning about human psychology to help with website design, building layout, and other facets of library work
Maintaining the use-in-library only books, which can include older and decaying books which entails some idea of book restoration and preservation to prevent damage and educate the public before they handle these books on proper handling technique
Knowing how to interact with students of every grade level and historians- including citations, source formatting, primary source research, essay writing, master's degree research, website use instructions, teaching people how to evaluate sources, etc
Having what's basically a computer science degree but for library stuff specifically (so extra stuff computer science students never learn because they'll never have access to those systems). People recommend a computer science minor to folks considering library science as a career because it can give you an edge over other students while doing your master's.
A strong grasp of your department's subject(s) so you can answer questions and help them find tailor made guides for relevant works, and if you're working at a small local town library that means "literally everything in the library"
The ability to provide good material recommendations for everything from "I want to bring a book with me to the beach" to "I need a paper on how long mice can breathe underwater" and where to find town hall, how to use a post box, how to deliver mail, etc
Managing resources that go way beyond books, like patron computers, printers, telephones, wifi services, library of things, audiobooks, CDs, videogames, audio equipment rentals, and so much more
I think these weren't included because they're the basic skills advertised in any library science degrees- they might have assumed people read the openly available class requirements for these degrees (which is such a library science assumption btw lmao). Library science degrees are in fact so advanced that you need to already have your bachelor's (or most of it) before you take any master's level library science course. There were no undergraduate library science degrees or classes last I knew in 2020.
So, re: "what do librarians do?" It's everything. They're the personification of knowledge gathering itself.

Animerica Extra Volume 1 Issue 1: A Closer Look
Finally, finally finally I managed to get the first two volumes uploaded to the Internet Archive, which you can find here, and I really do recommend because of Tumblr image compression being kinda gross. Anyways, I wanted to take this opportunity to talk about the first issue of the magazine and what I really found interesting and cool!
First off is the advertisements that appear in the magazine. Considering the scope and popularity of the magazine, the "type" of companies that would advertise are somewhat different. I mean, AnimeVillage got the front cover ad. Not that they're a tiny company, but much like others in here, they're not a company that lasted incredibly long.
Still, what is incredibly interesting though is their website, which is still saved in the internet archive, though in a somewhat incomplete fashion, which you can find here. Anyways, getting to visit an old site like this is a lot of fun, mostly because of the personality that appears with it. Offensive and sharp color palettes, more than a few moving pieces, and a very blocky layout. Honestly, I think sites like this have a considerable amount more to offer in terms of heart and individuality than what modern web design has given us, but that's not the point. The point is that Animerica Extra provides people, specifically the community in this moment, with an experience from the past. I mean, AnimeVillage is from 1998, there's no way that the vast majority of anime or manga fans would even know about them as a company today.
Getting to the actual magazine itself though, there's just two things that I find interesting with the Table of Contents. Firstly, right at the bottom, just above the "Printed in Canada" statement, Viz offers a disclaimer (which you can't read here because of nasty Tumblr compression, so I'll transcribe it): "For the purposes of publication in English, the artwork in this publication is in reverse from the original Japanese Version".
Now, I don't have any OG manga volumes that were printed more like graphic novels, so I can't say for sure, but I find this disclaimer interesting. Either, a) this is a general disclaimer Viz gives about the difference between JP and English publication, or b) Viz is required to provide this disclaimer for the materials. Either way it's a very curious piece.
And then there's the "Vizit our World Wide Web Sites at www.viz.com...". Yes, Viz actually printed "Visit" as "Vizit" alongside "World Wide Web sites". Just such a blast from the past as to how the internet was viewed and interacted with.
And then there's the Yuu Watase feature from the first issue. I think it's something that doesn't immediately stick out to people in the modern day because hey, you just go to MAL or Manga-Updates and you can see everything that Watase's ever done like it's nothing.
But in the 80s that sort of accessibility was non-existent. I mean, like you'll see later on with the letters, people only found out about Animerica Extra through Animerica. It really highlights how valuable this sort of information was to the community during the era, because you simply just would not know anything about Yuu Watase without these pieces.
Similarly, you couldn't go and look up what a series was about on the internet, you only had word of mouth and direct interaction, so excerpts like these that give readers an idea of what is is they're about to read is incredibly important.
Just a quick aside here about advertisements. I know a lot of people will say, "but hey! There were TV ads during the 90s and 2000s that could be run for this stuff! Surely they could provide information and advertisement via that!", and I think the easiest answer is another question: can the modern day animanga industry manage that? Obviously not, no. The avenues that Viz could approach to advertise via were incredibly narrow, largely focused on anime specific storefronts or general comic stores, placing physical advertisement at the top of the pyramid, followed up by ads distributed via their tapes back in the day.
Anyways, back on track to the editorial for an interesting conversation! This one's very interesting to me for just one thing, really- the original sketch giveaway.
It happens today, rather frequently, but with caveats. It's not, "Hey we're running a giveaway so make sure to participate", it's "Hey we've got X mangaka appearing at a con so come for a chance to win their sketch!". The difference in the approach to the giveaway is entirely different. I don't know if I can really say that it's more accessible, but I think that it gives fans a greater opportunity to participate purely because it's cheaper, running on a far longer schedule (as the editorial mentions), and doesn't require in person attendance for the opportunity.
But to be fair, even those giveaways are only a recent thing as the animanga market's boomed. There was quite a long period of dead air in terms of this sort of activity, so I find it really interesting how the landscape has changed in how these now corporations approach these aspects of interaction with their communities.
Also, here's a link to the archived version of the website in the advertisement on this page.
And this magazine really just keeps giving more and more crazy information. This News Notes panel really surprised me. Yes, it's got a lot of plain information like upcoming or finishing anime, but most interesting is the information that the left column provides.
They talk about the mangaka of Steam Detectives appearing at San Diego Comic Con, and not only that, but bringing some early footage of the anime. I mean, that sort of thing has only just begun happening again in the last few years.
It's crazy to see how advanced and engaged Viz was back in the day with the industry overseas. Not that they aren't today, but that the curtain's been pulled across so we no longer get stuff like this in English.
Speaking of things like that, because of the disappearance of things like this, we don't get to see interaction between individuals and the companies. The letters section in this first volume is so interesting because of the era it comes from. The accessibility of information is immediately addressed with the first letter that talks about them finding out about Animerica Extra via the mainline Animerica. Then there's the very talented letter sending that sewed a decorative pillow for their friend. But I think my personal favorite is the nonsensical letter penned by Jonkani.
These magazines are just a gold mine of history and culture pertaining to the North American animanga industry and community, that I really think is important to be able to experience and understand as it contextualizes where this slice of entertainment lies in the modern day.
And this just the first issue of the first volume, there's still 73 more to go that provide all sorts of wonderful and curious information and interactions. Incredibly happy to be able to provide this to the community, but also very hopeful that being vocal with this will both make people more aware of a history that is "ours", and inspire those that have pieces of history like this to archive them.
