‘You booked the night train for a reason.
So you could sit there in this hurt’
December 28th.
Four hours after the final goodbye.
the weather was anything but nice. the type of chill that nipped at peoples skin as it devilishly danced through the air.  The tall man didn't mind it though, he'd felt worse than some pinches from jack frost. The bustling sound of trains coming in and out of the station along with the crowd of passengers that left the vehicles carts. everyone going from one place to the next.
Though johnny, didn't quite know where he was going.
He knew he was going far, far away to hide away from whatever vendetta the world had against him. He felt as though he must of broken glass, the superstition his mother would warn him about when he was younger. though he's sure it was just because she didn't want to clean up any glass that johnny would've easily broken. though the superstition followed him to adulthood as he found himself a very superstitious person. come to think of it... he did break a glass bowl a couple months before, if that made any difference to his feelings about this situation.
Yes, the situation johnny suh found himself in.
the situation he thought he would never find himself in. because he was so sure, god why was he so sure?.
But it lead him to, standing alone. at an ungodly hour of the night, just so people wouldn't see the tears that fell down his cheeks. late night train full of people too tired or in too much of a rush to notice the tall man weeping away his sorrows over his lost lover. it also gave him time to sit and think, overthink or under think. it didn't matter. as long as he could sit in his hurt as dusk turned into dawn.
the hurt that was caused by his once muse, yn.
He wishes he could take everything back, maybe he wouldn't have been so stupid. A young barista falls in love with the film major. maybe it was a set up from the beginning, since the minute yn stumbled into his coffee shop looking as if they didn't know what sleep was. but yet johnny thought they looked beautiful.
He wishes he could take back when he made the first move. everyday yn would order the same thing, a basic black coffee. something johnny would always poke fun at. a drink he thought was reserved for older men and the occasional caffeine addicted mother. and every-time johnny would make it as a chuckle left his lips. until the seventh time they ordered, after a month of watching them for hours in his shop. he wrote his number on their napkin along with a J.
He wishes he could take back the way he smiled at his phone for the next week and a half like an idiot, every text he re-read a million times and could probably resite by memory.
He wishes he could take back the first date. which led to the second. the fourth. the eighth. the final.
he wishes he could take back letting them meet his family, letting them move in with him, letting them befriend his friends.
he wishes he could take back the last 47 hours.
johnny suh wishes he could take back loving yn.

The fifteenth UN Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP15) is currently taking place in Montreal, Canada. The conference, continuing from its initial meeting in October 2021, aims to limit the loss of biodiversity by 2030.
Helsingin Sanomat (siirryt toiseen palveluun) covered a Finnish angle on it, interviewing Finland's chief negotiator Marina von Weissenberg.
A fierce debate between developing and developed countries over who shares the burden of responsibility for conservation and climate change continues from the recent COP27 in Egypt.
While there is not yet a consensus, the biggest objective of the meeting is still on the table—a conservation pledge among the over 190 participating countries.
Von Weissenberg was still hopeful that this pledge to protect 30 percent of each member state's land and sea area by the end of 2030 would be adopted by the end of the conference.
"Yes, they will stay. They will not be given up easily. We need to come out of here with some numbers," von Weissenberg told HS over a phone call.
According to von Weissenberg, China has been active during the conference in Montreal, holding over a hundred bilateral discussions with representatives from countries around the world.
The meeting is expected to conclude on Monday. Before then, the Chinese chair of the conference will offer a deal which von Weissenberg described as a "take it or leave it" type of deal.
On Thursday, Finland's Minister of the Environment and Climate Change Maria Ohisalo (Green) also arrived in Montreal for the conference.
Finland may need its energy reserves this winter
Tampere-based daily Aamulehti (siirryt toiseen palveluun) reported on Finland's energy reserves—which amount to roughly five months at current consumption rates.
According to Pia Oesch, a leading researcher at the National Emergency Supply Agency of Finland, the country may need to dip into its reserves this winter.
"It is more likely than it has been for decades," Oesch told AL in regards to the reserves being deployed.
Oesch's agency maintains state reserves as well as setting guidelines for compulsory stocks held by companies. The reserves include petroleum products, coal and natural gas—though Oesch said gas supplies are limited.
According to Oesch the emergency oil reserve is of particular focus and there have been maintenance exercises. Preparations have been made in case of a crisis situation where the reserve has to be mobilised.
"A new addition is the emergency peat reserve. A wood reserve is also currently being prepared," Oesch added.
All these reserve fuels can be used to generate electricity in Finland, if necessary.
Oesch stated that electricity production is on a reasonable pattern, despite price increases.
"Russia's invasion of Ukraine came quite quickly. We have had a good six months to prepare for the winter in terms of fuels, which certainly created a challenge for many in terms of purchasing fuel and is reflected in our capacity to generate power," Oesch noted.
In addition, the colder than average weather in Finland this December has impacted electricity usage. Oesch pointed out that electricity supply and demand are among the biggest concerns for Finland for this and the following winter.
"You can't store electricity anywhere. This is clearly the challenge as society becomes more electrified, as all activities, including transport and industry, are electrified," Oesch told AL.
Nato intervention poll
In a recent poll commissioned by Maaseudun Tulevaisuus (siirryt toiseen palveluun) almost 40 percent of respondents favoured some sort of Nato intervention in Ukraine.
The question posed by MT asked whether Nato countries should send troops or air support to aid Ukraine.
The poll questioned more than 1,000 people living in Finland in early December.
Thirty-two percent of all respondents were against such a Nato intervention. MT wrote that nearly 29 percent found the question difficult and could not answer either for or against.
According to the poll, MT said that the Finns Party supporters were the most likely to support intervention with one in two in favour. Support for an intervention was also above 40 percent in the National Coalition Party, Green Party and Left Alliance.
Additionally, 48 percent of respondents from rural municipalities supported intervention, while 40 percent of respondents from the Helsinki area agreed with such a move.
Just over 44 percent of male respondents supported Nato intervention in Ukraine, while just over 35 percent of women in the survey favoured such a move.
Russia's invasion of Ukraine began last February and MT wrote that no serious peace agreements are in the works.
While Nato allies have sent billions of euros worth of military equipment and arms to Ukraine, Nato member states have not sent troops or air support, avoiding direct confrontation with Russia. Nato has also not declared Ukraine a no-fly zone.
Jyri Lavikainen from the Finnish Institute for International Affairs, illustrated what such an intervention would mean for the war itself, Finland, Nato and Russia.
"The decision would be so big that it would not be worth sending a small number of troops to Ukraine, but would be in effect an open war by Nato against Russia. Russia would certainly lose the war unless it escalated the war in some new way," the researcher summarised.
Whether or not such an intervention is strategically wise is debatable according to Lavikainen.
"No one in the US or elsewhere wants to give Russia such clear-cut options. Of course, a Russian defeat is already Nato's goal, but in this situation Russia could certainly not know how bad the defeat would be. It would introduce a false sense of uncertainty into Russian decision-making," Lavikainen pointed out.
Lavikainen said that the US position on Ukraine is to support the country, but not get directly involved in an attempt to avoid a broader—possibly nuclear—war with Russia.
While MT asked for comments from President Sauli Niinistö and the defence ministry, the paper received no response on account of the changeover of defence ministers from Antti Kaikkonen to Mikko Savola.

He didn't want to travel too far out of downtown. He'd rather stay away from East Hastings.
THE KEEFER BAR, EAST HASTINGS/CHINATOWN
The young professional was feeling carefree that night. It was 7pm and he was leaving the office late. It was summer and the air downtown was warm and humid. He pulled his sleek, caseless iPhone out of his Saint Laurent dress pants pocket and checked his messages.
Allen: Drinks tonight. Keefer Bar with Max. Young Professional: Girls? Allen: Lots of Blondes.
He grinned and navigated to the Uber app. He secured a driver and sat down on the edge of a concrete fountain to wait.
Tumblr media
Credit: Cygnus Design Group cygnus.group/our-work/deloitte-vancouver/
The Young Professional was a newly initiated Junior Associate at Deloitte. He worked on the thirteenth floor of the Deloitte Summit Tower, a skyscraper resembling a haphazardly stacked tower of enormous glass rubik's cubes which dominated the Vancouver skyline. He'd taken the job straight out of college and moved to Vancouver, where he knew the skiing was good and there were plenty of opportunities for upward mobility.
His Uber pull up to the curb, and the young professional climbed into the back seat, mumbling a greeting to the driver.
The young professional was concerned about the choice of bars. He didn't want to travel too far out of downtown. He'd rather stay away from East Hastings.
young professional: omw now. Why Keefer bar?
Allen: Good long island iced tea. And the girls are hot.
And so he put his Deloitte fear aside and met his friends at the Keefer. .....
At midnight, the young professional left the bar. He was more than a little drunk now. He had forgotten his reservations about the location of the Bar and was now preoccupied with getting one of the young blondes back to his apartment. Outside the bar, with his arm around the young woman, he waited for a second Uber. It was the corner of Hastings and Columbia. People were milling about on the street nearby. People talking in groups, eating from 7/11 bags and moving in and out of tents on the sidewalk. An old, bearded man in a light blue jacket and sandals turned and asked the young professional for a cigarette.
Tumblr media
Credit: The Globe and Mail https://www.theglobeandmail.com/canada/british-columbia/article-western-canada-tent-encampments-in-east-hastings-wont-be-forcibly/
He mumbled a disinterested "don't have any", and avoided eye contact. The old man rose from where he had been sitting, and pointed a skinny finger at the young professional.
"Fuck you, man" the old man said quietly.
Once again, the young professional's sleek, caseless iPhone was removed from his pocket, and so he carefully entered the numbers 9-1-1, without even thinking twice. The old man paced back and forth now, hands clenching and unclenching, running them through his sparse white hair. The young professional raised the phone to his ear.
He called out to the old man.
"Hey man chill out. I already called the cops." He said smugly.
The old man was becoming increasingly distressed. He sat on the curb now, head in his hands, screaming his innocence and his unwillingness to "talk to any police".
The officer was there within five minutes. The police were indifferent to the distress of the old man, and they sternly ordered him to kneel, with his hands on his head. The young professional and his date watched intently from across the street, the passive audience of this spectacle. The officer and the old man were separated by only five feet. Suddenly, the old man made a sort of half-motion towards the officer.
It may have been he was simply trying to remove his sandal, or maybe he stumbled, but it didn’t matter. In an instant, the officer closed the distance and drove his shoulder into the man’s chest. He crumpled like a child's doll, his head connecting with the curb.
The young blonde gasped and began tugging on the sleeve of the young professional, pulling him away from the scene, but he simply stood, frozen in place. Then the Uber was there, whisking him back to his own world. He watched out the rearview as paramedics carried the old man's broken body away.
The young professional sat in silence. He felt nothing at first, but slowly the guilt clawed its way out of his stomach. He had caused this. It was his fault for calling the police. However, as the car navigated away from East Hastings and into the comfortable streets of the West End, these feelings faded. He began to forget about the people on the other side of the city, those who he only saw against his will. He was an important man, of course, and soon found his mind returning to his work, and the beautiful girl beside him, and he forgot all about the old man at the corner of Hastings and Columbia.

As we approach the holiday season, there is now some hope that the traditional interaction that makes our communities so vibrant may return. "For 20 months, the ban on non-essential travel has separated families, hurt businesses and disrupted the historic ties that bind residents of both sides of the border. "Our border communities are in fact one city spanning two countries," said IBC Bank Executive Vice President Gerald "Gerry" Schwebel. Beginning in November, foreign nationals seeking to enter the United States at land borders for nonessential reasons will be allowed to enter with proof of vaccination. Air travel from Mexico and Canada is not subject to the essential travel requirement. The current restrictions only apply to land-border crossings. They’ve been extended, month after month for 20 months. "These supposedly temporary border closures were instituted in the early days of the pandemic, without any scientific rationale, in the hope that they would slow the spread of the COVID-19 virus. Similar economic impacts from Mexican visitors can be found in Brownsville, McAllen and Eagle Pass," Nixon added. Giving yourself a final once over in the mirror to make sure your make-up was still in place and you hadn’t tucked your dress into your underwear or something ridiculous like that. If you were honest with yourself, you looked good. The black dress you borrowed from your best friend fit you perfectly, and wasn’t too slutty, but just enough to, hopefully, tempt your date.
It had been a while since you’d last been on a first date, but something about a guy flirting with you at work, being so confident, and good looking, made you agree to not only give him your number, but to agree to him taking you to dinner.
Jack had made a reservation at one of the nicest restaurants in London and would be meeting you there. You were a little hesitant to give him your address to pick you up before you spent any real time with him.
Checking the time, you started to panic about being late, so you ordered your uber as you grabbed a light jacket and your purse. Going outside, you waited outside your apartment building until it showed up.
Arriving at the restaurant, you check in with the hostess who leads you to a table for two, informing you Jack hadn’t arrived. You order a glass of wine and settle in to wait. As you look around the room, you notice a lot of couples. Some who seem to be on first dates, others who seemed to know one another more intimately.
A few tables over, you see a guy sitting alone. His long, dark hair is tied up in a man bun which you can’t help but admire. His shirt sleeves are rolled up as he leans his toned forearms on the table in front of him, his long fingers idly playing with the cloth napkin in front of him. You can see a hint of ink on one of his arms, but you’re too far to work out what it is.
Lifting your eyes, you take in his profile. From where you sit, you can see he has a strong jaw, a hint of stubble, and light eyes. Although you’re waiting for another man, you kind of hope he’d turn to look at you so you can see more of him, but you’re disturbed by the server bringing you your drink and a basket of bread sticks.
Thanking them, you tip your wine, and nibble on the end of a bread stick while you wait for Jack to arrive. Slowly, you make your way through the drink and order another. When you finally pull your phone out of your purse, you realise you’ve been sat in the restaurant for just over an hour.
With a sigh, you take a look around you again, noticing that many of the couples had left and the space around you was emptying. You finish your second drink and ask a passing server for your check. Once it arrives, you leave some cash, including a generous tip and gather your things to leave.
Embarrassment floods through you as you see heads turn to look at you. Being stood up isn’t your favourite thing, but it happening so publicly makes it a hundred times worse. You pull your jacket on, and start to weave your way through the tables.
Once you’re outside, you take a deep breath before looking out for a passing cab. Naturally, there isn’t one and you begin walking in the direction of your FLAT. You haven’t gone far when you’re tapped on the shoulder. Thinking it’s Jack, you turn to yell at him.
It’s not him. It’s the guy from the restaurant, the one who’d been sitting alone. You notice his eyes are a hazel colour and they’re bright. His smile is wide and you feel a flutter in your stomach at his proximity.
“Sorry if I made you jump,” His voice is smooth, and you can’t help but smile back at him. “I saw you back in there.” Of course he did. He witnessed you waiting for a guy who never showed, witnessed you looking like a complete fool. More than anything you wished a cab would show up so you can make your escape.
“Yeah, not my finest hour.” You look away from his face as he chuckles softly. “I should have left sooner, but hell. Hope’s a bit of an evil bitch though.”
“You gave in after an hour, I waited almost two…” His voice trailed off, making you look back up at him.
“You got stood up?” You blurt out, instantly cursing yourself in your mind. “Sorry, that came out wrong.
“Hey, don’t sweat it. From anyone else it would sound like a joke, but somehow… somehow from you it doesn’t.” You smile up at him, glad he wasn’t offended. “Anyway, I was wondering…” A shy smile comes over his face as he pulls at the collar of his shirt under the dark denim jacket he wore. “Seeing as we’re both in the same boat, how about we make the most of our night, together.”
The words shock you, but there’s also a hint of pleasure in what he’s asking you.
“No offence, but why should I pick spending the rest of my evening with you rather than going home, putting my PJs on, and binge watching Supernatural? I don’t even know your name.”
“First, I’m Charlie. Charlie Gillespie.”
“International man of mystery?” You tease him at the way he introduces himself, making him laugh.
“Hey, Canadians would make great spies. And to answer your question, yeah, a night with the Winchesters would be great. But wouldn’t you rather be with someone who isn’t fictional?”
“I may have to be convinced.” With a smirk, you begin to walk away, as if you’re leaving him behind.
“Wait up.” He catches you up and falls into step with you. “what will it take to convince you?” You stop walking and look up at him. He’s not tall, but he’s taller than you, which you can’t help but like.
“It depends. How averse are you to ice skating?” you ask.
“I grew up in Canada, I’m an excellent skater.” He holds his arm out for you. With a smile, you tuck your hand in the crook of his elbow and the two of you begin to walk through the London streets. “Uhm… what’s your name by the way?”
“Oh, it’s Y/N.”
“Pretty name for a pretty girl.” You feel your face heat with a blush at both his compliment and the smile on his face. “DO you, er…, do you wanna get changed first?”
You look down at the short dress you’re wearing. For a literal second, you debate it, then decide against it.
“No, I’m good.” You tell him, your confidence in your ability taking over.
“Ok, but if you fall and flash people, I’d like it noted that I warned you.”
“It’s been noted.”
You arrive at the outdoor ice rink and both claim some skates. You hate the feel of them, knowing you have your own at home that are perfectly moulded to your feet.
“Are you ready?” Charlie asks, holding out his hand to you. Taking hold of it, you stand up and the two of you walk over to the edge of the ice.
“Always ready.” Letting go of his hand, you place a blade onto the ice and glide away from him smoothly. Performing a little spin, you face him and wait for him to catch up with you as you skate backwards effortlessly.
“Okay, I guess I owe you an apology?” he laughs when he catches up with you, his own skating, while rusty, impressing you. “You’re pretty good.”
“Well, thank you. You’re not too bad yourself.” Once again, Charlie takes hold of your hand and the two of you move across the ice. Every now and then, you show off, performing spins and jumps that you haven’t done for a long time, making Charlie smile.
After a while, when you can feel the cold seeping into your legs, you both leave the ice and go to get a hot drink.
“So, are you a professional skater?” He asks as you sit down to drink your coffees.
“No, I never got to go pro, but I got close.” You admit, noticing the impressed look on his face.
“What stopped you?”
“I went to university and discovered what a social life felt like.” He laughs at your words. “I realised that having friends was better than constant training.”
“That sounds fair.”
“So, what do you do?” you ask him, noticing he looks away from you. “Why so sheepish?” You’re intrigued now, just from his reaction.
“I’m an actor and a musician.” You can’t help it, but you burst out laughing.
“Why were you embarrassed to admit that to me?”
“I don’t know. It’s different in the States and back home in Canada, but elsewhere, it’s weird. I don’t like people to think I’m bragging or something.”
“Look, own your talents. If you love what you do, screw what anyone else thinks.” He smiles, but doesn’t respond as silence falls between you as you both finish your drinks.
“You want to skate some more?” he asks as you both stand.
“I’ll never say no to more skating.” You grin at him and take hold of his offered hand. It should feel awkward holding a strange guy’s hand so much, but it doesn’t. His long fingers, warmed by his coffee, wrap around yours as he leads you back to the rink. As you put a blade onto the ice, the lights dim as a DJ begins to play loud dance music.
“So, Mr Musician, do you dance?” You ask as you turn to him, skating backwards as the rink fills up around you.
“Not as well as I play guitar.”
“Stick with me kid, you’ll be okay.” You give his hand a tug to pull him along. You can’t help but be sucked into the beat of the music filling the air around you. Moving your body in time, you show off a few of you skills, all the time keeping your hand in Charlie’s.
Feeling his eyes on you, you turn to look at him, seeing a small smile on his face as he watches you move.
“What?” you ask, slowing to a stop, causing him to almost bump into you.
“Nothing, I’m just enjoying the show.” He raises an eyebrow as he smiles widely.
“This is nothing. I’m pulling a bit of dead weight with me.”
“Is that so?” He let’s go of your hand and indicates for you to do your thing. “Go on then, show off.” He leans back against the side of the rink and watches you, an intense look on his face.
You move around on the ice, building up speed. Once you’re going fast enough, you pull off an almost flawless half axel before spinning on one skate, the other leg pulled up to the side of your head. Once you slow and stop, you skate back over to where Charlie is applauding.
“That was amazing. You’re really good.” You blush at the compliment and look away.
“I’m rusty as hell, but thank you.”
The air between you is charged with something you couldn’t quite identify as the disco lights slow down and the music drops from frenetic to a slower track, A quick glance at the watch on your writs, you realise you and Charlie have been skating for over four hours and it’s almost midnight.
“One last dance?” He asks, holding out his hand yet again. You take hold and expect him to start leading you around the rink. Instead, he pulls you into his arms and the two of you sway on your skates near the edge of the rink, careful not to get into anyone’s way. “Can I make a confession?” He speaks softly into your ear.
“Sure.” You wonder if you should be nervous about what he’s going to say.
“I’m glad you were stood up. If not, I wouldn’t have got up the nerve to speak to you after I got a text from my date saying she’d had a better offer.” Pulling away from his hard chest and looked up at him.
“Got a better offer?” Was the woman insane? You may not know Charlie, but from what you’d learned from spending time with him, he was a genuinely nice guy and anyone would be crazy to skip out on a date with him.
“Apparently so, but I was set up with her by my sister, so I’m not too bothered. Plus, I wouldn’t have been able to do this.” He bent his head and kissed you as the lights around on you blared to life.

International travelers stranded, angry in omicron’s wake (Washington Post) Lauren Kennedy Brady landed in Johannesburg on Friday to a flurry of text messages and news alerts. The Broadway veteran and North Carolina resident was headed home after 11 days touring Africa alongside her mother, daughter and niece. Everything was going smoothly. But scanning her phone, Kennedy Brady, 47, learned a new variant of the coronavirus had been detected in South Africa. Not long after, the family found themselves stranded, their reservation on the next flight canceled amid the new restrictions. The disruptions for Kennedy Brady and her family, as well as so many others, come as various governments scramble to place restrictions on travel, closing their borders to southern African countries. Travelers have been left stuck abroad, desperately trying to get home amid a slew of cancellations, while others are scratching plans to see loved ones in other countries.
Vaccine makers and the balance of power (Financial Times) The Financial Times has spoken to more than 60 people involved in the vaccine process, including current and former Pfizer employees and government officials across the globe, to lift the veil on how the company that has contributed so much to saving the world from Covid has also ensured it is such a lucrative business. They are all grateful for a safe and effective vaccine. But many question if the balance of power has tipped too far in Pfizer’s favor. Lawrence Gostin, a professor of global health law at Georgetown University, says Pfizer and other vaccine makers have been “hard edged” in negotiations because politicians have been reluctant to push back. “I’m not anti-Big Pharma . . . I think they have created a miracle, a scientific triumph,” he says. “But to say that they are wielding their power fairly, openly, with a sense of compassion, is manifestly untrue.”
Canada to require people arriving by air to take COVID-19 tests; measure excludes U.S. flights (Reuters) Canada, seeking to halt the spread of the Omicron coronavirus variant, will require people arriving by air from all nations except the United States to take a COVID-19 test, Health Minister Jean-Yves Duclos said on Tuesday. “All air travelers coming from outside Canada, apart from the United States, will now need to be tested at the airport (where) they are landing in Canada,” Duclos told a briefing. “They will then need to isolate themselves until they get the results of their test.”
Pandemic inspires burst in entrepreneurship across US (WSJ) The pandemic has unleashed a historic burst in entrepreneurship and self-employment, The Wall Street Journal reports. Hundreds of thousands of Americans are striking out on their own as consultants, retailers and small business owners. The move helps explain the major shifts happening in the world of work, with more people looking for flexibility, anxious about COVID-19 exposure, upset about vaccine mandates or simply disenchanted with pre-pandemic office life. It is also aggravating labor shortages in some industries. The number of unincorporated self-employed workers has risen by 500,000 since the start of the pandemic, Labor Department data shows, to 9.44 million. The total amounts to an increase of 6% in the self-employed.
The declining US birthrate (The Week) The long decline in the U.S. birthrate continues. 2020 saw the fewest babies born relative to the population of women between 15 and 44 of any year in American history. A recent Pew poll found the fraction of non-parents between 18 and 49 saying they were “very likely” to have kids fell from 32 percent in 2018 to 26 percent this year, while the fraction saying they were “not too likely” or “not at all likely” increased from 37 percent to 44 percent. There are strong reasons to think these trends will only escalate. Absent major changes, in the next decade or two, the American population is likely going to start falling fast. The American welfare state effectively imposes massive penalties on people who have kids, especially if they’re on the bottom half of the income ladder. Our health care system is the most expensive and worst-performing in the rich world. We have no national paid family leave, no public child care, and no national public pre-K. Our income distribution is hideously unequal. We do have a child allowance of sorts thanks to the American Rescue Plan, but it’s designed poorly and isn’t reaching many of the people who need it most.
Barbados says goodbye to queen, transforms into republic (AP) Barbados stopped pledging allegiance to Queen Elizabeth II on Tuesday as it shed another vestige of its colonial past and became a republic for the first time in history. Several leaders and dignitaries, including Prince Charles, attended the ceremony that began late Monday in a popular square. The last time the queen was removed as head of state was in 1992 when Mauritius, an island in the Indian Ocean, proclaimed itself a republic.
A Brazilian town empties as migration to U.S. accelerates (Reuters) Amid tearful goodbyes, Ana Paula Souza, her husband and their infant son set off for the United States, one of hundreds of families to depart the small Brazilian town of Alpercata in recent months. Nestled in the hills of southeastern Minas Gerais state, Alpercata has been sending its townspeople north for decades. But as locals grapple with a pandemic that has killed jobs, battered Brazil's currency and sparked double-digit inflation, a piecemeal migration from this poor, okra-farming area has become an exodus. Municipal data suggest hundreds of households in Alpercata, home to roughly 7,500 people, have this year taken their kids out of school and sold their belongings to finance the journey to the United States. The stampede from Alpercata and other nearby towns underscores the lingering impact of a pandemic that has killed more than 600,000 people in Brazil, second only to the United States. And a booming U.S. job market and a strong dollar that makes remittances sent back to Brazil stretch farther are proving hard to resist.
Sweden’s first female prime minister quit after several hours. Less than a week later, she’s back. (Washington Post) Her historic initial appointment as Sweden’s first female prime minister lasted a matter of hours. Now, just a few days later, Magdalena Andersson is back and hopes to hold the job for a decade—if she can conquer the obstacles of minority government and an election due to be held in less than a year’s time. “It feels good and I am eager to start working,” Andersson told reporters at a news conference on Monday, in which she committed to an agenda focused on the environment, welfare and tackling crime.
Greece to make vaccinations for persons over 60 mandatory, PM says (Reuters) Greece said on Tuesday it would make COVID-19 vaccinations mandatory for people aged 60 and over, a drastic step for the country grappling with a new surge in coronavirus cases. Authorities said they would impose a 100 euro ($114) fine on every individual over the age of 60 who was not vaccinated. The measure would apply each month from Jan. 16 onwards.
Sneakernet (MIT Technology Review) Prior to the Taliban takeover, Afghanistan was home to a thriving sneakernet. Basically, when access to the internet is spotty, it becomes more cost-effective just to load a bunch of digital media onto a hard drive and transport it physically to the person who wants that digital media. And while there are 23 million mobile phone users in a country of 39 million, as of early 2021 there were less than 9 million internet users. Locally known as “computer kars,” people who sell digital content by hand had been a staple of the local digital economy, distributing Hollywood and Bollywood films throughout the country. Data was sold locally, with 5 gigabytes of data flipping for around 100 afghanis, or $1.09. Business is bad, in no small part because of declining incomes and crackdowns on people who import content that the religious hardliners don’t approve of.
Iran strikes hard line as talks over nuclear deal resume (AP) Iran struck a hard line Tuesday after just one day of restarted talks in Vienna over its tattered nuclear deal, suggesting everything discussed in previous rounds of diplomacy could be renegotiated. Speaking to Iranian state television, Ali Bagheri, Iran’s top nuclear negotiator, referred to everything discussed thus far as merely a “draft.” It remained unclear whether that represented an opening gambit by Iran’s new president or signaled serious trouble for those hoping to restore the 2015 deal that saw Tehran strictly limit its enrichment of uranium in exchange for the lifting of economic sanctions.
Leaked papers link top Chinese leaders to Uyghur crackdown (BBC) Excerpts have been put online from previously unpublished documents directly linking top Chinese leaders, including President Xi Jinping, to the state's crackdown on Uyghur Muslims and other minorities in Xinjiang province. According to analysts, the documents show that former government leaders called for measures that led to forced internments, mass sterilisations, forced assimilation, "re-education", and coercion of detained Uyghurs to work in factories. China has consistently denied committing genocide against Uyghurs.
Attacks by Israeli settlers on Palestinians spike in the West Bank (Washington Post) Israeli settlers have dramatically increased their attacks on Palestinians in the West Bank over recent months, with violent incidents up about 150 percent in the past two years, according to data presented by the Israeli military at a defense ministry meeting this month. A United Nations agency has separately found that 115 Palestinians have been beaten or otherwise attacked by settlers since the start of the year, with four fatalities. More than 300 incidents of property destruction, including olive trees cut and burned during the autumn harvest, were documented over the same time period. The wave of beatings, arson, vandalism and rock-throwing—most taking place where Palestinian farms and groves are adjacent to Jewish settlements established on land captured by Israel in the 1967 war—has prompted some leaders of the Israel’s governing coalition to call for a crackdown on settler violence.
How to supercharge your donations (Yahoo News) In September, Matt Schulz started a GoFundMe fundraiser for American Cancer Society as a way to honor his father who had passed away the year before. He told family, friends, and colleagues and on a lark, he contacted his employer's human resources department to see if the company would also contribute. Turns out, it would match employee contributions up to $1,500 every year. The perk is actually pretty common, though how much each employer is willing to match varies among companies. Nearly two-thirds of Fortune 500 companies offer matching gift programs, according to Double the Donation, which helps nonprofits increase their gift revenue, and 26 million individuals work for companies with these programs. While $2 billion to $3 billion is donated through these matching programs every year, per Double the Donation, the problem that Schulz discovered is that many employees are unaware of these matching programs. That means as much as $7 billion in funds don't get donated to charitable organizations every year, according to statistics from Double the Donation. "If we could change that, it could make an enormous difference for money-strapped charities and for people in need all over the country," Schulz said.

Lasabrjotr Chapter 74: Lessons and Dreams
Chapters: 74/?
Fandom: Thor (Movies), Marvel Cinematic Universe
Rating: G
Relationships: Loki x Reader
Characters: Loki (Marvel),
Additional Tags: Post-Endgame: Best Possible Ending (Canon-Divergent),
Summary:  You are troubled by dreams, while Loki seeks ways to make things easier on you. You receive an unexpected visitor.
They day was almost upon you. The decorations were all up, your drum beat and chant were properly memorized. Several Avengers were on route, and parts of the semi-built city had been cleared and cordoned off for the festivities. Buridag was almost here.
You had your cloak and armor. You had your drum, and your parts memorized. You had your beloved prince, and your Valkyrie escort. There were some things missing though.
You wished Nanna Beth could have been here to see this. You wished someone from back home could be here to see this. Someone other than Todd, who damn well didn't deserve it, but would be here anyway. You had the feeling that, if you asked, Loki would have had him barred from attending, but you didn't want to go down that road. You were supposed to be a grand symbol of the integration of humans and Asgardians, and you didn't think you could do that honestly while at the same time excluding people just because you didn't like them, and they were awful people. Which Todd was. Ugh, why hadn't he gone home yet? He hadn't spoken to you, or tried to contact you, and he didn't even seem to be trying to cause trouble. It was weird.
And then there was the issue of the bull...you still didn't know what to do about it. You were coming to the conclusion that you would simply have to endure, and somehow go on with your life. Would it be good for you? To further experience and understand the importance of death? To become a symbolic provider of plenty for the gathered celebrants?
You would just have to clench your teeth and deal with it. It was one of those hard lessons you would have to learn as the lover-and advisor-to royalty.
You'd probably never touch a hamburger again though.
Sleep had been coming to you only reluctantly; the long, stretching moments after closing your eyes for the night were filled with thoughts and questions about Ymir's Dreamscape. You were not permitted access to the artwork-no one was. For all that it was contained within the protective confines of the shield and size-changing devices, it was still considered too precious for informal handling.
But it haunted you. You saw them painting in your dreams, shapes and concepts you had difficulty understanding. Glancing over their shoulder at the workings of a truly alien mind, and hoping not to be noticed, though you were no more than a mote in their eye.
Streaks of color. Clusters of circles. Shapes that were nearly anthropomorphic, yet wrong somehow.  They drew and drew, in between millennia long stares of contemplation, watching the asteroids clump up bigger and bigger. Occasionally they had to brush them away from their immense body.
They had more fingers than you did, and each one was stained with color, almost all the way to where they joined with the palm. Crackled veins of colored light pulsed up and down the fingers, from a bright spark on the tip of each; it flashed whenever they dragged their fingertip along the canvas they had created.
You couldn't see the whole thing: it was so big, and so far away, and they weren't done making it yet. You would always wake up before they were finished. You would see the colors more vividly in the daytime; certain hues of red and blue, purple, yellow, orange, and green-they popped out at you. Each of the great beings fingers traced its color into your eyes.
Your lessons had tapered off, to give you time to concentrate on the festival. You weren't though; artwork occupied your mind. You doodled approximations of the things you saw in your dreams, close, but never quite right.
You tapped your drum, and recited your chant, the ancient words spinning back countless aeons, and thought about colors.

Loki stood out in the paddock and watched the bull. It was a proud creature; it walked the confines of the fence, confident in its great strength and prowess, munched its hay secure in the knowledge that it could not be bested.
It died tomorrow. He would swing the sword he almost never used, and bring the feast to everyone. It wouldn't be the only one: There were pigs and chickens and sheep, already butchered and ready to go, it was just the bull that was symbolic.
“Magnificent beast, is he not, my liege?” Andsvarr asked. “Shame about the public execution though. I know it's tradition, but it seems a bit gratuitous.”
“You speak very freely today, Alarrson.” Loki said. “You lack guile. Say what you came to say.”
“Er, I apologize your Highness, I did not know how to broach the subject. Have you perhaps spoken with your good lady about the bull sacrifice?”
“Not beyond discussing it as a part of Burdag tradition. Otherwise, she has been rather busy learning her ritual.” He paused, realizing Andsvarr knew something he didn't. “Why? Has she confided something in you?”
“I would say that she has, your Highness.” Andsvarr said. “Has she brought up her discomfort with this sacrifice to you?”
“She has not...Though now that you do, I can't say I'm surprised.” That may have something to do with your increased tension lately. The way your mind had been wandering. There was a great deal of stress on you; perhaps he should have thought more about how the live sacrifice of the bull might effect you.
“Humans used to make such sacrifices very often, from what I've read.” Andsvarr continued. “It's one of the customs we shared. It's much less common now, I hear, but since she came from a smaller farming settlement, I would have thought she'd seen one before.”
Loki shook his head. “Her community is agrarian, and a monoculture at that. While I was there, I saw no livestock at all. Just endless corn.”
“Weird stuff.” Andsvarr commented. “But tasty. And so many applications.”
“It is not, I think, only the sacrifice that troubles her.” Loki said. “It is the sacrifice on top of everything else. If that doomed giant hadn't woken up...”
“If we hadn't been digging in the ice.” Andsvarr pointed out, then withered under Loki's stare.
“Don't think I haven't thought the same.” Loki said severely. “But my brother has been studying the humans effect on their own planet, and he tells me that the melting of the ice may have been inevitable. They will awaken, no matter what. Better now that we are prepared. But it shan't be before Burdag, so now I must think of what to do with him.” He gestured toward the ox. “His fate is sealed, but I wonder if there is some way I might change the presentation? Removing her from the ceremony would reflect poorly on the public, but...”
“If it pleases...” Andsvarr interrupted after the pause. “There was talk in the barracks about something one of the gate guards heard from an islandpostur man, that the bets were on whether the Gävle goat would burn this year, and when. I looked it up because some of us were placing bets. You have a hand phone don't you? If you look, you might have the same idea I did.”
“When did everyone around me decide that cryptic was the way to be?” Loki complained. But he realized that Andsvarr was allowing him to claim credit, rather than trying to dictate to royalty.
Andsvarr went off to his drills, and Loki left the ox to his munching. A quick check showed the Gävle to be a kind of effigy, composed of straw-a stand in for a real goat. This was how human civilizations got around the ritual spilling of blood. By sacrificing in the shape of the original.
He saw instantly what Andsvarr had. But how to make it work? The sacrifice and butchering was to be done right there on the spot; obviously, that couldn't be done with straw.
But a container covered in paper and flour paste, shaped like a cow...
Maybe.
He needed to find Beli.

There was a flat, dry area outside of Asgard and Trolerkaerhalla that was reserved for the landing of small planes and other aircrafts. It was cleared of snow, and roped off so that the air travelers could get inside the city as swiftly as possible, but that didn't stop the more die-hard of admirers from putting on their warmest clothing and waiting to catch a glimpse of who was coming to the festival. Some of the arrivals were no one of note to the observers, but a few of them garnered great attention; The Vision, in his bright colors, Maximoff, and Dr. Banner, as uncomfortable as ever with the cheering and applause.
They weren't the only important people to have answered their invitations: representatives and ambassadors from all around the North Atlantic Sea were coming in-from the relatively nearby Faroe, Shetland, and Orkney islands, as well as the Hebrides, whose names you were just learning.
You were at the gates to greet these esteemed visitors, speaking what little Icelandic you had managed to learn. There were a surprising number of representatives; it seemed like everywhere in the North wanted to be there-people from each of the Scandinavian countries and various areas within, to the larger island countries; Scotland, England, Wales, Ireland and North Ireland.
You still didn't quite know the difference, but you knew it was important enough not to ask.
There were also people from such far-flung places as Svalbard, Greenland, Germany and Estonia. In fact, it seemed as though most of Atlantic and Baltic Europe had sent someone. To your surprise, Canada and the United States had also come, even though they didn't recognize Asgard's sovereignty.
And then there were the anthropologists, journalists, even a few 'local' celebrities. Everyone wanted pictures of or with you, and you hoped that none of these people would turn out to be horrible, since pictures of you with them were going to be on the internet forever now.
You couldn't help but side-eye the religious representatives- some Christian, and some Heathen, from all the surrounding countries, and from within Iceland itself. You weren't sure what the Christian leaders were doing here: Asgard, by its very existence, posed a great challenge to their faith, so perhaps they were facing that challenge head on? Or perhaps it was to gather information. You didn't think they would have much success in proselytizing here, as it was hard to convince people to turn to a god that wasn't well known for answering directly, when the Aesir they'd grown up with were just right there. And it was extra hard to force conversion when you didn't have a weapon capable of harming the people you were trying to force.
The Heathens didn't make you any more reassured: speaking to Sofie had taught you that there were definite problems within those communities, racism and authoritarianism chief among them. Though, like any group of people, there were plenty who didn't accept such things. It just wasn't easy to tell by looking.
None of this was anything you'd ever had to think about back home. Diplomacy, poise, professionalism, visibility, navigating complex social and political relations-what use did a simple baker have for such as these?
You hadn't baked in weeks. Your time was mostly sucked up by lessons and political stuff, and though Loki had promised you respite after the ceremonies, you still couldn't help but wonder if that part of you life was simply over.
The cooks had learned your cinnamon roll recipe, and most of Asgard was picking it up. Loki was spoiled for cinnamon rolls these days, and showed no sign of growing tired of them. You wanted to introduce him to cornbread, snickerdoodles, or even no-bake cookies, but there just hadn't been time. Everything was lessons and dreams.
The sun dipped low, and though it was still early in the day, you would be going back inside once darkness fell. It simply got too cold to stay out. Luckily, it seemed that all the visitors had the same idea, and the stream of representatives and celebrities trickled off with the fading light.
Soon there was only one plane left, tiny, even smaller than the flock of already small planes that had come and gone. Only two people disembarked, no bodyguards, and they struggled against the strong winds. At least they were properly dressed in warm coats. Coats that you recognized.
No, there was no way. No possible way. But they were here.
“Daddy!?!” You squealed, and threw yourself into his open arms. Professionalism could be damned.
