“Today? Hold on.”

Alan turned his eyes away from Ruby, who held her hands behind her back, and pulled out his phone. His thumb clicked the power button, lighting up the screen. “…April 25th.”

“And do you remember what April 25th is?” The woman slid the box around to hold in front of her.

He rubbed the back of his neck. “What’s that? A present?”

She ushered it towards him. “Happy birthday.”

It hovered for a moment before his fingers delicately wrapped around it.

“Did you forget again?”

“...Why?”

 A rueful smile spread across her lips. “Am I not allowed to celebrate your birthday anymore?”

“That’s not what I meant.”

“...I know.”

“I thought we were done.”

Her gunmetal eyes shut. “...Behaving like this isn’t gonna bring him back.”

“So you’re not mad at me anymore?”

“Not at you.” Eyelashes fluttering open, she matched his gaze. “I…missed you.”

“You ‘missed me’?”

“When we used to spar and hang out. What we’ve done in the past few months to make up for lost time…I missed that.” She shoved her hands in her pockets, shuffling her feet while barely holding her head up. “I just wish Ishibashi was here again too.”

A sigh quietly left his nose. “Yeah…me too.”

“But this isn’t about him. This is your day.” She offered a more cheerful smile. “I have the meal plans laid out, but I’ll leave the day’s itinerary to you.”

“Meal plans?” he repeated incredulously.

“Yeah. Unless you’d prefer to grill something. You don’t gotta include me, just thought…I’d treat you, and make up for all the bullshit.”

“...If anyone has to make up for bullshit, it’s me.”

“Stop. I’m making you celebrate your birthday whether you like it or not.”

He hesitated.

“Birthday Rule #1. Thou shalt not place blame on the birthday boy.”

“Who made that rule?”

“I did. Just now.”

The slightest tug pulled at his lips. “Got it.”

“So? If there’s anywhere special you want to go, I don’t mind being your chauffeur for the day.”

Quickly swiping his keys, he spun them on his finger before firmly gripping them in his hand with a smirk. “No. I’ll do the driving. Come on.”

“Lead the way, Captain~”

"I've decided." Alan's tone was resolute.

Ruby stared, still tripping over her words. "No...no, you—"

"I'm not changing my mind."

With that, he spun on his heel and headed for the door.

"No...Mido-kun!"

His back grew distant, ignoring her pleas.

"Mido-kun!"

He disappeared through the doorframe.

"Alan!!"

For just a brief second, from where she couldn't see, hesitation stole his feet before he forced himself away from the room with fists tightly wound.

A sigh, and her shoulders sunk.

Then, a child's voice emerged just beside her. "Do you like him?"

"...Shizuyo?"

The girl's large, emerald eyes watched the woman curiously. A hint of mischief mixed with a sort of pity swirled in them. "You have that sort of longing look on your face."

Ruby grimaced, shielding her face with a hand. "I'm just concerned, okay?"

"I understand. But perhaps you should tell him."

"...What good would that do now?" Her hand fell, grey eyes sliding to the floor. "If things keep going as they are..."

"Which is why now is the perfect time to do it."

The two traded a glance, uncertainty meeting reassurance.

"And if all goes well, you have my blessing."

"H—" Brain short-circuit.

Rebooting.

"Haah??!"

Shizuyo laughed.

Ruby Haida

“You’d do best not to stick your nose in places it doesn’t belong.”

An expert doctor with a lazy streak, always making time for frequent breaks between her vigorous work. Though gruff and detached, she still handles matters of the lab with utmost care. Some theorize she was a hellion in the past.

Made from the OG Ruby, from a zombie apocalypse AU.

She is a ghoul. Her stigma is invoked with “Valu”. It causes everyone in a certain radius to look directly at her. If they’re already looking at her, it will cause them to look in the complete opposite direction. This can be stacked once before it simply doesn’t take effect anymore.

People tend to overlook her and sometimes even seem to forget she’s standing nearby.

She is a licensed physician that graduated at the top of her class.

She was the former Captain of Mortkranken, but willingly gave it up to Yuri.

During the Clash, she lost her “most important person” and cut off the students in her year for several months.

Unlike other Mortkranken students, she enjoys being active. However, she’s not very sporty.

She used to dance ballet, but now only does so in secret as a hobby. Leo posted a video of her at some point though, so it’s not so secret anymore.

She’s not close to her parents, nor her younger brother.

There’s a large set of scars on her left arm covered by a tattoo of a snake. She tends to cover it, because the design of the tattoo, she’s noticed, makes people uneasy.

She claims that a friend gave her the tattoo to cover the nasty scar.

It appears she’ll sometimes refer to herself in third person.

You could say she's ambidextrous.

Her artifact's special ability is that the snake ornament on the blunt end of the staff can enlarge and act as a sort of surfboard. She can use it to drift across moving surfaces, but can't go against the flow of it.

Secrets:

This Ruby is actually a biologically perfect clone of the original Ruby Haida.

OG Ruby made a demonic pact and wished for a twin sister. From her own severed arm, Our Ruby was formed.

OG Ruby kept Our Ruby a secret, and Our Ruby grew envious of the fact that OG Ruby was able to live a life outside of a room. Our Ruby made her own demonic pact after that, as well as began setting up a plan to kill the original and take her place.

At the last minute, Our Ruby realized she had made a mistake, and tried to stop the murder from happening. However, she was too late. As a result of trying to interfere, her left arm was severely injured.

The surgeries and recovery from the damage have permanently scarred her inner-arm, and she can no longer fully bend or extend her left arm and hand. She used to be left-handed exclusively.

Feeling guilty of taking OG Ruby away from the few people in her life that were close to her, Our Ruby took it upon herself to live in her stead as if it was an impersonator that had died instead.

OG Ruby was very studious and wanted to be a doctor, but Our Ruby liked to sneak out and hang with delinquents. Some of them remained her friends as she went through medical school.

Our Ruby was given a different name when she was “born”/cognizant, but she has since discarded the name.

She is ashamed to talk about the murder because she feels like it happened “for no good reason”, and haunts her to this day.

Since looking into her background, Nicholas has been suspicious of her, and she's aware of his desire to investigate her further. She hasn't revealed this to anyone, and doesn't plan to, but tends to avoid him like the plague when able.

"I mean, those two aren't here." Ruby's gunmetal eyes flicked to the backseat, then back to Alan.

His eyes followed the movement.

"So it's not like you have to, like...'set a good example' or anything..."

Alan let his gaze stray from the road, lips slowly rising along with hers in silent confirmation. As he faved the road again, he pressed down on the gas pedal, causing it to roar as they gradually picked up speed.

The car threaded through a spot of rusted, overturned traffic, rocketing across the asphalt. Neither of the pair could contain the adrenaline high, breaking into laughter as they went off-road and took the nearest detour to prolong the moment.

When they were on a steady stretch of road, Ruby pulled down the window, leaned her head out, and hollered as loud as her lungs could handle. The wind wipped through her hair, threatening to rip her from the vehicle, only adding more fuel for the rush.

Infected could be spotted ambling towards them in the distance, so she soon after climbed back in as the car continued tearing down tbe road.

Back at the camp, Alan and Ruby both quickly stifled whatever giddiness they had left over from their earlier pursuit. They casually rounded the corner and found Sho and Leo resting by the fire.

"What the fuck took you so long?" Leo growled.

Ruby huffed. "We were obeying traffic laws and having boring conversation—like two old people should."

The younger men traded a look of confusion and disgust, causing Ruby and Alan to break out into grins at the obvious misunderstanding.
