Él mismo se hacia llamar un “escritorzuelo de Hollywood”. Su ultima novela “El Ultimo Magnate”, fue publicada póstumamente y esta basada en el productor cinematográfico Irving Thalberg. En 1939 finalizó su contrato con la MGM y pasó a trabajar como guionista independiente.

Fitzgerald murió antes de que pudiera completar “El Ultimo Magnate” y su manuscrito fue completado por su amigo el crítico literario Edmund Wilson.

Murió en 1948 en Hollywood California a la edad de 44 años.
