Aldourie Castle

Aldourie Castle is located on the shores of Loch Ness in Inverness, Scotland. A laird’s mansion has sat on this site since 1626. The Scottish Baronial Castle evolved over 220 years and was restored in the 19th century to the castle it is today. The Fraser-Tytler family owned the property for many generations. They became influential in the 1830s and began transforming the house to show their position and power. The castle was built in four phases and completed in 1839. The property was sold again in 2001, but the family retained some of the estate. The entire castle is available for private rental with luxury bedrooms, 5-star hospitality, and a Michelin-trained chef. The castle sleeps 24 guests in 12 rooms, but there are four self-catering cottages for additional guests. The castle has a library, a billiards room, a drawing room, a spiral staircase, and Scottish antiques and paintings. Aldourie Castle sits on 500 acres with gardens, woodlands, orangeries, bridges, arbors, and a private marina. The castle is the only habitable castle on the infamous Loch Ness.

Aldourie Castle was originally an early 17th century stone mansion house, founded by the Dunbars. Possibly on the site of an earlier laird's house, a mansion consisting of a three storey main block with a round tower and parapet, was recorded here in 1626. A wing and turrets were added in 1850 and around 1900 Sir Robert Lorimer transformed the building into Scottish Baronial Gothic castle. The castle is available on an exclusive use basis and also provides holiday cottage accommodation, check website for details.
