Best Bollywood songs of the 90s era

No matter how many groovy and brilliant songs are being released day in day out, it will always the songs of the 90s era that melts our hearts and takes us down the memory lane of that golden era in the history of the Bollywood industry.  3) Chaiyya Chaiyya

It was a brilliant song which is one of the favorite songs of several different generations. The singer of this marvelous song was Sukhwinder Singh & Sapna Awasthi and Mani Ratnam was its director. The lyrics were given by Gulzar. The movie features some of the renowned names of the industry such as Shahrukh Khan, Manisha Koirala, Preeti Zinta, Raghuveer Yadav, Piyush Mishra, Sabyachi Chakravarthy, Sanjay Misra, Krisnkant, Aditya Srivastav and others. These were just a few of those legendary and brilliant songs we were talking about. They were loved and appreciated back then and are loved and appreciated now as well. Jawaani Song From SOTY 2: It’s A Perfect Combination Of Tiger’s Smooth Moves, Perfect Re-Creation By Vishal-Shekhar And Awesome Choreography

Yes, first song of the movie Student of the Year 2 titled Jawaani has come out. It can be considered as the best remixed song that has come after a long time. For the composition of song, credits go to Vishal-Shekhar. The original song ‘Yeh Jawaani Hai Dewaani’has was featured on Randhir Kapoor and Jaya Bachchan. Lyrics for the original song have been written by Anand Bakshi and music is given by RD Burman. Music director Vishal-Sekhar has always been a fan of music director RD Burman and they have done complete justice to the original song.

In the remixed version, original portion of the song has not been touched at all. Some additional lines have been added to the song by Anvita Dutta. Vishal Dadlani and Payal Dev have sung the song along with older version of the song. Vishal is known for his deep voice which is pretty close to the original tone of the song. Theme of the music video is mix tape which has added an interesting twist to the song.

Choreography of the song is amazing also.  Some great dance moves from Tiger Shroff, Tara Sultaria, Ananya Pandey and Aditya Seal can be observed. In the song, more focus is given to Tara Sultaria as she is a dance enthusiast. Both Tara and Ananya have looked really cute in the video. However, special segment has been devoted to Tiger Shroff also. Everyone knows that Tiger is an excellent dancer and he has showcased his locking-popping skills here.  There is no doubt in the fact that lot of hard work has gone in to the song.

The very best of the Showman

Subhash ghai has been one of the most commercially successful directors in the last quarter of the previous century.  From Meenakshi to Madhuri to Manisha to Mahima, he had a penchant for M for his leading ladies.Jackie Shroff, Anil Kapoor and Dilip Kumar have been the actors he collaborated the most with.

 Nine of his best films (since its is 72nd bday today) in my opinion:

9) Saudagar(1991): The film brought back two legends of Bollywood together after 30 years. It was a silver jubilee hit and gave the Nepali beauty Manisha, a perfect Bollywood platform. Ilu ilu and Imli ka boota were chartbusters for weeks. It was the showman’s take on Romeo and Juliet. It got ghai his only filmfare for direction.

8) Kalicharan(1976): After being rejected seven times by different producers, ghai’s script was liked by NN Sippy, despite him telling the producer that it has been rejected by lot of people. The rest, as they say, is history. It was such a blockbuster that it was made into all four South Indian languages.

7) Taal(1999): As a producer he introduced film insurance policy in bollywood first time with his film 'Taal' and first one to initiate banks to finance movies. Anil Kapoor, AkshayeKhanna, Aishwarya Rai, Amrish Puri, Alok Nath, AR Rahman, Anand Bakshi: with so many As, I believe this is the reason he called his film’ A Subhash ghai film’ instead of his earlier version Subhash ghai’s.

6) Karma(1986): Subhash Ghai made Karma at the time when Bollywood was going through one of its worst phase as business was hitting at low due to lack of content, low production value and video piracy. It was first movie where Dilip Kumar and Nutan worked together and only movie where Dilip Kumar and Naseeruddin Shah worked together. But it was Anupam Kher who stole the show in Karma as Dr. Dang, one of the most remembered villains of Bollywood. Anupam Kher achieved star status with Karma and critics praised him the way he acted in front of the legend like Dilip Kumar.Karma did not win any Filmfare Award because Filmfare Awards were not organized in that year.

5) Hero(1983): Its  another brave attempt of Subhash Ghai because in the era of action movies he made a love story with newcomers in his first production. Subhash Ghai used Pakistani folk singer Rehsma’s voice for the song ‘Lambi Judai’ and made a huge publicity of it on radio channels which also attracted the attention towards movie. Anuradha Paudawala also earned recognition for her song ‘Tu mera hero hai’ from Hero and was nominated first time for Best Female Playback Singer in Filmfare Awards. With Hero, Subhash Ghai got the status of ‘Showman’ for the way he launched the newcomers like Jackie Shroff and Meenakshi Shehshadri and made them stars.

4) Meri Jung(1985): Subhash Ghai directed courtroom drama Meri Jung for producer N. N. Sippy who produced Subhash Ghai’s directorial debut Kaalicharan. Meri Jung was the first hit of Anil Kapoor as a solo hero which also gave the confidence to other producers to sign him as a leading actor. Anil Kapoor once said in an interview that it was after the success of Meri Jung when he decided to settle down and proposed his girlfriend Sunita and got married.

 3) Karz(1980): Karz is one of the finest films of Subhash Ghai’s career as he took the risk of making a movie on the theme of reincarnation which was not a love story but a revenge drama inspired from Hollywood movie The Reincarnation of Peter Proud.  A semi- hit when first released, Karz is a movie considered ahead of its times by many. It, however , was once of the most inspired films for a generation of filmmakers altogether. It has been remade into all four South-Indian languages as well. The legendary duo Laxmikant-Pyarelal’s music is definitely one their top 5 albums and rightly won them the filmfare award despite having won consecutively for the previous 4 years. Simi as the vamp was nominated for the Fimlfare Award of Best Supporting Actress. Simi Garewal was reluctant to do the role of Kamini but she did that role after the persuasion of Subhash Ghai. Prem Nath needs a special mention  despite not having a single dialogue.

2) Ram Lakhan(1989): It  was a typical Subhash Ghai masala entertainer which has all the ingredients of a typical Bollywood entertainer like drama, emotion, romance, comedy and music. It was the first movie where Anupam Kher played a comic role and won Filmfare Award of Best Comic Actor alongwith Satish Kaushik. Rakhee gave power packed performance in a well written role and won Filmfare Award of Best Supporting Actress. Subhash ghai released an 8-page ad in Movie magazine before Ram Lakhan released.

1) Khal Nayak(1993): The popular pairing of Anil Kapoor and Jackie Shroff that featured in the director’s previous films, “Karma” and “Ram Lakhan” was abandoned and Ghai, instead, chose Sanjay Dutt to essay a role that normally would have been done by Anil Kapoor.  The audiences ran in their droves to witness some of the Madhuri Dixit screen magnetism. In every scene, she holds you captive with her stunning beauty, demanding screen presence, expressive acting and excellent dancing skills.The song "Choli ke Peeche Kya Hai" picturized on Madhuri Dixit in Subhash Ghai's Khalnayak' was a runaway hit, but as many as 41 political parties created a storm when they opposed the lyrics.

Kalyanji Anandji's best recognition came long after they retired! The internationally acclaimed group Black Eyed Peas included tunes (with full credit to Kalyanji-Anandji) from two of their biggest hits (Yeh mera dil from Don and Ae naujawan from Apradh) in their song Don’t phunk with my heart. This song won a Grammy Award and Anandji was felicitated by BMI (Broadcast Music, Inc) on behalf of the duo in 2006, several years after their retirement! BIRTHDAY GREETINGS to Anandji Virji Shah, Bollywood's renowned music director and one half of the incredible music director duo Kalyanji Anandji, who turned 85 today. Born in Kundrodi, Gujrat Anandji Virji Shah (born 2 March 1933) formed the Kalyanji-Anandji duo with his elder brother Kalyanji in 1953.His father was a business man who migrated from Gujrat to Mumbai to run a grocery shop.Both the brothers composed some of Bollywood's most memorable chart topping numbers from the 60s right up till the 90s.Kalyanji-Anandji's Bollywood entry was feted as a major turning point in the industry. A time when big music directors like Naushad, Hemant Kumar, Madan Mohan, S.D. Burman and Shankar Jaikishan ruled the industry, gaining a strong foothold was difficult, but Kalyanji-Anandji swept a million hearts in spite of the tough competition.The duo’s first major success came with Manmohan Desai’s “Chhaliya” in 1960.Two decisive scores, Himalay Ki God Mein and Jab Jab Phool Khile, established them as composers to reckon with.After this there was no looking back and they scored hits after hits for films like Dil bhi tera hum bhi terey (1960), Bluff master (1963), Dulha dulhan (1964), raaz (1967), Upkaar (1967) , 'Purab Aur Pachhim', 'Johny Mera Naam' etc. In 1965, they won their first Filmfare award for “Saraswathi Chandra”.Their success continued unabated through the 1970’s with films like Haseena maan jaayegi (1968) Apraadhi (1972), Blackmail (1973), Zanjeer (1973), Haath ki safaai(1974), Kora kaagaz (1974, they won their second Filmfare award for this film), rafoochakkar (1975), Dharmaatma (1975), Hera pheri (1976), Muqaddar ka sikander (1978), Don (1978) and Qurbani (1980). By the mid 1980’s their success began to wane a bit, with only a couple of hits like Jaanbaaz (1984) and Tridev (1989).Kalyanji Anandji composed music for over 250 films in a career spanning over 3 decades and had innumerable hits to their credit.Their last film as composer duo was Ulfat ki nayeen manzilain (1994). During the Golden era of film music in the 1950’s and 1960’s, they composed tuneful, soulful melodies, apt to the setting and era, Then when R D Burman arrived big time with Teesri manzil in 1968, they went with the flow of time and gave some of the greatest disco or otherwise western numbers. Who can forget their songs like Too kya jaaney wafaa (Haath ki safaai), Ye mera dil, pyaar ka deewaana (Don-original!), Laila main laila (Qurbani), Oh ya Allah (Muqaddar ka sikander), all of which had either the beats or orchestration heavily westernized? That apart the duo also gave quite a few folk numbers like Main to bhool chali babul ka des (Saraswathi Chandra), salaam-e-ishq meri jaan (Muqaddar ka sikander), khaike paan banaaras waala etc. Though they did not delve into pure or semi classical, their songs of 1950’s and 60’s were definitely based on classical or folk melodies.Kalyanji–Anandji's variety-studded music is complete with some of the topmost songs of all singers and genres. Both Kalyanji and Anandji worked as music composers for over 250 films, 17 of which were golden jubilees and 39 silver. Kalyanji and Anandji started an orchestral group called Kalyanji Virji and Party which organised musical shows in Mumbai and outside.This was the first attempt made for holding live musical shows in India.They were also responsible for presenting the Hindi film industry with some of its brightest singing stars. Kalyanji Anandji discovered raw musical talents such as Udit Narayan, Alka Yagnik, Kumar Sanu, Sadhna Sargam and Sunidhi Chauhan and gave them their first break. They also helped introduce or gave career defining breaks to lyricists like Anand Bakshi, Gulshan Bawra, Anjaan, Verma Malik and M G Hashmat.Kalyanji breathed his last in November 2000 but his younger brother Anandji has gamely carried on their legacy, through shows and the various charitable activities espoused by them through the years.He is a recipient of the civilian honour of Padma Shri (1992).
