been rewatching a ton of spongebob recently (via reaction videos but nonetheless) and one thing thats stood out to me is how fucking aroace spongebob is. like its actually crazy.

like i cant think of a single time (in the first four seasons ive seen again at least) where he was shown or even implied to be attracted to literally anybody, even when the other people around him are. i mean like the valentines day episode shows him giving valentines to everyone and no one's (not even sandy's, The Girl's) really read as romantic. the plot of the episode literally revolves around his extravegant gift to PATRICK being delayed and how patrick gets so upset over spongebob's perceived lack of a gift that he literally goes insane.

and in any bit where spongebob's even remotely like letting out hearts or ACTING like someone in love, its always humorously towards a non-person, like the krusty krab or something. he genuinely reads as so aroace and its actually fucking awesome

#like its nothing CRAZY. but it is cool that in the one of the most popular cartoons of all time the main guy has literally zero interest #in romance. not even as a bit. its very cool #also ive honestly started seeing him and patrick as a qpr like genuinely 😭 the vday episode but also like the one ep where #spongebobs like ''we were supposed to be best friends forever!'' and it shows the history of their friendship #before showing them old and gray laughing together and then buried next to each other. like ok. bwahh?#even in the musical dude they have the super cute bff song that feels almost romantic but Not #and one of the big conflicts is literally them being split up and they sing a whole dramatic ballad about #how much they miss the other LIKE? im actually being so real about this #serena.txt

i think the main thing that a lot of artists (in)famous for being frequently used in character playlists (ie lemon demon, the crane wives, the mountain goats, etc.) have in common is that a large chunk of their discography is not love songs and instead about personal subjects or obscure/fantastical scenarios

#eliot posts #making my aro playlist has kinda opened my eyes to how often different artists i enjoy write about romance #i was surprised how much of mitski's discography has nothing to do with romance #like she does have plenty of songs focussing on that sort of things but many of them don't #idk how well known the weakerthans are but i was also pleasantly surprised how many of their songs are not at all romantic #cuz their sound is just like. pretty standard alt rock type stuff.#those are the first two to come to mind but there are many #and then there are a few artists that i love that i had a very hard time finding non romantic songs from #80s pop and old country and punk seem like the best mainstream genres for non romantic music
