RIP Allen Garfield (1939-2020) - Veteran character actor from the New Hollywood era who appeared in The Conversation (1974) and Nashville (1975) died yesterday due to complications from COVID-19. Usually playing bureacrats, villains and politicians, Allen Goorwitz (his real name and at times credited as such in many projects) worked alongside directors such as Francis Ford Coppola, William Friedkin, Milos Forman, Roman Polanski, Brian DePalma,  Woody Allen, Mark Rydell, Robert Altman, Wim Wenders, Tony Scott and Quentin Tarantino (the short film My Best Friend’s Birthday (1987) which marked Tarantino’s first experience behind camera). Credits include Putney Swope (1968), Hi, Mom (1970), Taking Off (1971), Bananas (1971), The Candidate (1972), The Front Page (1974), The Stunt Man (1980), The State of Things (1982), One from the Heart (1982), The Cotton Club (1984), Teachers (1984), Beverly Hills Cop II (1987), Let it Ride (1989), Until the End of the World (1991), Citizen Cohn (1992), a lead role in Jack and His Friends (1992), Diabolique (1996), Crime of the Century (1996), The Ninth Gate (1999) and The Majestic (2001).

Allen Garfield (80), born Allen Goorwitz, was an American film and television actor. Garfield made his film debut in 1968 and appeared in over 100 movies before passing away at the MPTF home. Mr. Garfield became a screen mainstay in the 1970s, appearing in such notable films as Francis Ford Coppola’s “The Conversation” (1974), Robert Altman’s “Nashville” (1975), Michael Ritche’s “The Candidate” (1972) and Richard Rush’s “The Stunt Man” (1980).

Mr. Garfield had been living at the Motion Picture & Television Fund Home, a retirement facility, where several staffers and some residents have tested positive for the coronavirus. He died on April 7, 2020 of complications from COVID-19. #COVID19VictimRemembered
