Sweethearts

With a script by Dorothy Parker and Alan Campbell, W.S. Van Dyke’s SWEETHEARTS (1938) is the most sophisticated of the films teaming Jeanette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy. She’s a natural for this type of material, but the real surprise is Eddy, who’s looser here than in most of their films together. Maybe it was the relief at finally being out of period costumes. The pair are married Broadway stars celebrating the sixth anniversary of their big hit, SWEETHEARTS. Tired of the long run and the hangers-on at home, they announce they’re headed to Hollywood. The show’s management team — Frank Morgan, Allyn Joslyn, Mischa Auer and Herman Bing — contrives to break up the act by making MacDonald believe Eddy is cheating on her with their secretary (Florence Rice, who’s quite good), so they can tour the stars in separate companies. That ruse is about as ugly as it sounds, and it’s hard to enjoy those characters after that. Plot is the film’s downfall. There is none for almost a third of the picture. After Eddy and MacDonald announce their travel plans, what little plot there is stops dead so she can go and try on clothes. They’re wonderful clothes, thanks to Adrian, and MacDonald looks delicious in early three-strip Technicolor. But the whole thing could move better. The music from Victor Herbert and others is lilting and romantic. There’s also a terrific montage sequence by Slavko Vorkapich as MacDonald and Eddy take to the road separately (with Douglas MacPhail joining her, and Betty Jaynes joining him, both in fine voice, even if they never did become the studio’s next great singing duo). For all the witty lines, the whole thing is really just a trifle, albeit a very pretty one.
