Mam Yinne Wa by Alogte Oho and his Sounds of Joy
Alogte Oho and his Sounds of Joy - Mam Yinne Wa
The grooves. The synth all over this album (looks like a MicroKorg in their promo shot synth nerds) gives this album of Ghanian afro roots a spacey extra dimension. The rhythms are great, the backing vocals drive the songs and the rhythms are super tight. Quality.

catching up on a couple weeks ago... i wasn't current with this, just kept the liner notes.
but i remember this week being intense, sitting with my daughter in the emergency room with an unending cough and her struggling to breathe and me reading her charlie and the factory and every second afterward blessing and blessing and blessing all the little time i have with her.
~~
a side
• movie finale, madlib: all hail madlib pt 3.
• the boy is mine, us girls: bizarro twin peaks dancehall cover. 💯.
• big boss big time business, santigold: i have a rap crush on santigold.
• to feel your best, kaitlyn aurelia smith: this week this song found me.
• dancing mountains, m83: I really like this Brian Eno cover har har. really what i needed more than anything this week was a quiet space, so i gave myself this.
• mam yinne wa, alogte oho & his sounds of joy: I love the dance of instruments and voices here.
• the executioner's song, cass mccombs: this dude is still pretty new to me. delightful grim edge in this one. 💯.
• dancing and fire, low: more meditation on loss.
• walking the ghost, james: I am a sucker for a long slow build. I was on a bus during a soggy snowstorm listening to this and it felt like high school.
• scorpio, stabat stable: this one almost didn't make the cut tbh. too weird to live, too rare to die.
• ashen snow, dirty three: somehow this dirty three record evaded me forever.
• jesseye 'lizabeth, mercury rev w/ phoebe rogers: most unexpected collab of 2019? Mercury Rev and the superstars of folk running a revue of Swanee River.
b side
• haenim, kim jung mi: prettiest song ever? probably. 💯.
• surgeon, st. vincent: nauseous and tender is a hard line to walk. the end is unreal.
• let's get out of here, les savy fav: had a few moments when I wanted when I wanted to escape somewhere with my wife a bit lately. where should we go?
• late at night, benny sings: this whole record is indie yacht rock fire.
• dance, dance, dance (disco version), marta acuna: i want to hear the shoegaze version but I think this might also be it.
• could heaven ever be like this, idris muhammad: 1976 is a good time to mine for funky soulful jazz. 💯.
• imaginary folklore, nujabes: profound and crunchy and I can't get enough of it.
• it's too late: the streets: thanks to Campbell for reminding me about the streets. I remember being really into this record when it dropped and then totally losing touch with them.
• false media, the roots: amazing/depressing when a song written 13 years ago seems like it could have been written yesterday.
• 6 summers, anderson .paak: I completely missed this record last year and feel like a fool. this one speaks to me... seems like positive change is an uphill battle. 💯.
• quiet dog, mos def: parting moment of zen, courtesy of Yasiin Bey.

Letter 25
Hello,
how life treats you nowadays?
I heard you are working again. Peaky is back. So happy for you. It must be a big change after a whole year... Hope you can all stay safe.
It is February already. Love it. It is great to experience the longer days. I feel some kind of a rush, or tingle in my bones whenever i think of spring. Our cat is getting the zoomies more often. When her little paws make such a big noise running around upstairs like thunder, oh it makes me laugh. Or when she is attacking the poor curtains. And when we are outside in the garden, she just zooms up to the highest branch of the apple tree. Crazy little soul. Love her.
The weather is warming up day by day. Today i had the chance to do a bit of gardening. Oh, how i missed it! I put on my headphones and listened to a good bunch of good music. Pure joy. There is this precious song, from a Ghanaian artist, it made me think about singing. The force , or the power with they sing gives me all the good feelings. Somehow brings me back to my childhood. In elementary school i used to sing in the choir. This song reminds me of those special moments, where everybody was in sync and in harmony and we made the last note perfectly loud. Like full of life.
-Alogte Oho And His Sounds of Joy- Mam Yinne Wa-
When i finished with the tasks for the day, i went around the garden for a stringent check up. Spying, looking for signs of spring. I felt the urge to bring something into the house. I found a volunteer hazel bush, who knows how did it get there, with three perfect pendant like flowers. The sun shined through them, they looked like gold. I figured, i should let them be, maybe we can eat one hazelnut in the fall? This little habit of mine, bringing things into the house also reminds me of being a kid. Collecting treasures, then carefully placing them out on a shelf...
Oh, it is March already.
As the time flies, i realized, i grew to love myself fondly. Even the parts of me, that i knew are sooo different from the ‘normal’. The parts that make me feel like an outsider. It is all good. I don’t need things to prove, that i am worthy, of love, or recognition. I am whole, i am good enough, i am valuable. A bunch of strong words. I am not used to use them.
But i have a thing, that really bothers me for a few days now. A thought that made its bed in my heart. Sneaky little thing, without any introduction, it just appeared on my doorstep. I really don’t want to deal with it. I thought, i let it hang around, hoping it will get bored of me, and leave... no luck with that.
Do You have issues like this? I wonder.
May the spring tickle your senses, and the Sun warm your heart.
with love
