MY MOMENTS OUT OF TIME IN FILM 2019
Tumblr media
Instead of a Top 10 List, every year I like to honor a long-discontinued but influential annual column from Film Comment magazine. I couldn’t wait for my father to come home from work with the “Moments Out Of Time” issue.  The writers would cite their favorite scenes, images, or lines of dialogue, even from films they may not have liked, because let’s face it, even bad films may have a great moment or two.
The year brought us so many wonderful films.  Parasite wowed me with its ability to surprise while telling an important story about class divisions.  I think Once Upon A Time In…Hollywood will stop me in my tracks over and over again with its immersive deep dive into late 1960s Los Angeles.  The female-on-female gaze gets a workout in the stunning Portrait Of A Lady On Fire, while Jojo Rabbit masterfully walks a tightrope between hilarious and moving.  Watching Eddie Murphy return firing on all cylinders in Dolemite Is My Name remains one of the most joyous movie experiences of the year. Yet, even I can’t see them all, but here, in no particular order, are my Moments Out Of Time in film for 2019:
A door opens, someone calls out “Honey?”, as the plot veers off in a jaw-droppingly unexpected, biggest WTF of the year direction, turning a light class comedy into something far, far, deeper- Parasite
Upon the assassination of JFK, his enemy, Jimmy Hoffa (Al Pacino) orders the half mast flag in front of the Teamsters' Union to be raised back to its standard position.  As Hoffa looks up at the flag, this chilling, diabolical scene feels like the end of civil society as we know it - The Irishman
“Climb in my fur” - my favorite line of dialogue last year, cementing Jennifer Lopez’s Ramona as an iconic film character who can take sexual innuendo and turn it into an invitation for friendship - Hustlers
“That was the best acting I’ve ever seen in my whole life” - dialogue runner up as a young actress (Julia Butters) whispers into the insecure but committed actor Rick Dalton’s (Leonardo DiCaprio) ear, causing him to weep uncontrollably and giving him the recognition he’s always craved - Once Upon A Time In…Hollywood
A boy spies a flitting butterfly and stands up to get a better look, notices a pair of shoes next to him, and in an instant his entire life heartbreakingly changes - Jojo Rabbit
A vacationing family looks out their window to see…themselves…lined up and waiting to invade their home - Us
A gate which will no longer close on its own.  Two estranged parents and their child manually slide it shut with the barrier separating them from each other.  The battle lines have been drawn with deft precision - Marriage Story
A woman stares at another across a theater.  They have a history.  The symphony plays a striking, propulsive piece which both women know so well.  A searing two minute close-up of the women she sees betrays her anguish, the pain, the missed opportunities, and the suffering of a woman who society demanded could not be herself - Portrait Of A Lady On Fire
Best final scene of the year: Two best friends sit in a car curbside at an airport.  They awkwardly exchange awkward pleasantries even though we can tell they’re really going to miss each other.  A delicate cover of “Unchained Melody” plays over stellar performances of Kaitlyn Dever walking away and Beanie Feldstein looking forelorn, both conveying that painful moment when high school besties part.  Then, suddenly remembering it’s a hilarious comedy, Feldstein almost crashes into Dever, who gets back in the car and they decide they have enough time to get pancakes.  Feldstein yells, “F*ck yeah!” as we smash cut to black - Booksmart
While he’s wanted inside at his premiere, Rudy Ray Moore can’t walk away from the fans waiting outside the theatre, choosing instead to give himself over to them and melting everyone’s hearts, including mine, in the process - Dolemite Is My Name
Wait!  This guy is at your Passover Seder?  You’re related to him?  Now I’m scared - Uncut Gems
A milked cow.  A barn.  A dogfight up in the skies above.  A knife. Two soldiers foraging for food, safety, and a chance to survive the next minute.  Everything changes. - 1917
Matthew McConaughey as Baker Dill (!) spends most of his time howling to the heavens or completely naked, and for these reasons, I will never forget this terrible, amazing film experience - Serenity
When she forgets the words to her signature song, the audience sings them for her, making us all realize that even though she was close to death, the memory of her will never fade away - Judy
Normally, I’d be delighted to open my window and see Isabelle Huppert staring at me from across the street, but here, it’s a hauntingly nightmarish image - Greta
Julianne Moore sings along to an Air Supply song in her car and somehow manages to make her lapse in taste seem heartfelt - Gloria Bell
I love comedic moments built from repetition or missed connections.  When Jack (Himesh Patel) can’t get his parents to sit still for a moment so that he can convince them he wrote the song “Let It Be”, his incredulousness and frustration strikes comedy gold - Yesterday
A young writer negotiates her terms with a publisher, gloriously finding her voice and her power at a time where such bravery seemed impossible - Little Women
A drunk, lonely, middle-aged woman dances alone in a small town honky tonk to Leon Russell’s “Out Of The Woods”, giving us a glimpse into her less austere past - Diane
A dildo with a retractable switch blade - Knife + Heart
What do the sounds of Elton John and Bernie Taupin’s songs look like?  A man crashing out of a window and joining a dancing flash mob at a carnival to “Saturday Night’s Alright For Fighting” felt alive and electric, Yet, even more so, in a moment achieving some level of transcendence, Elton (a fantastic Taron Egerton) falls sideways off of a diving board into a pool where his boyhood self plays the title song on a piano at the bottom.  That we somehow end up at Dodger Stadium where a sparkly Elton greets his fans and flies up into the stratosphere makes his classic soar - Rocketman
A grunge pop star/recovering addict (Elizabeth Moss), not too dissimilar to Courtney Love, sits at a piano and performs a sober rendition of Bryan Adams’ “Heaven”, stripping away the outrageous bravado to quietly break out hearts - Her Smell
“Agency” seems to be on everyone’s lips when describing dynamic, plot-driving lead characters, but Leo’s (star in the making Félix Maritaud) choices don’t fit into a standard box.  His decision, like it or not, is all his. - Sauvage/Wild
In a film filled to the brim with unforgettable, emotionally-laden images, its final shot of a man rowing a boat across turbulent waters moved me to tears - The Last Black Man In San Francisco
To learn from a documentary that the Ten Commandments monuments on display in front of many City Halls across the U.S. resulted from a Charlton Heston-led publicity tour for his 1956 movie epic is to realize, painfully so, that sometimes Hollywood and not the Churches, ruins everything! - Hail Satan?
Although, sooner or later, most of us will end up in a patch of dirt, some long for that moment more than others and find beauty in it - High Life
Watching Laura Dern pull off one of the most notorious literary scandals of modern times gives us one of the most original kicks of the year in a scene with an interviewer.  She hides in plain sight as a novelist pretending to be the terribly British Manager to Kristen Stewart’s fake face of the same novelist in order to build mystique and sell more books - J.T. LeRoy
Who knew that a CGI-animated film for the whole family would have the most bone-chilling sequence of the year?  But there it was in an antique store with Gabby Gabby and the creepy ventriloquist dummies - Toy Story 4
A woman enters her drab Chinese hotel room only to be asked if the U.S. is better by the anxious bellboy.  Afraid to offend him, she merely tells him it’s different.  The things we do to ease the pain of the less fortunate. - The Farewell
Three women.  An elevator on its way to the chairman’s office.  The sideways glances.  The knowledge they all have of what awaits them.  A silent sisterhood until Nicole Kidman’s Gretchen Carlson awkwardly comments, “Hot in here”.  The year’s best calibrated scene - Bombshell
An out gay actor, Mark Patton, confronts the writer of the film which ruined his career and gets an apology.  The years of pain written across his face don’t go away, but a little weight of the world gets lifted from his very relieved, very courageous shoulders - Scream Queen!  My Nightmare On Elm Street
While Tarantino played around with historical revisionist wish fulfillment, director Mary Herron and writer Guinevere Turner tapped into female rage in telling the story of the Manson murders.  When Hannah Murray as Leslie Van Houten carries out one of the murders, screaming as she plunges a knife into someone, we get a rare glimpse into finally understanding what brought her to that point - Charlie Says
After Lily Collins’s Liz demands, “ Release me…what happened to her head?” as a way for doomed serial killer Ted Bundy (a chilling Zac Efron) to admit his guilt, he finally writes with his finger on the glass prison visitor’s window which separates them, one frightening word, “Hacksaw” only to wipe it away immediately - Extremely Wicked Shockingly Evil And Vile
A gay white man and his straight, non-English speaking Latino handyman bond over Madonna’s “Borderline” in the back seat of an Uber.  Matt Bomer’s angsty character finally relaxes and connects with this adorable man (Alejandro Patiño) doing ridiculously cute seated dance moves - Papi Chulo
A young woman rushes to her apartment bathroom and in a seamless transition, she emerges down the aisle of a plane headed for Sweden - Midsommar
Sometimes one can derive great pleasure from a film by simply listening to how Adam Driver says the word “ghouls” - The Dead Don’t Die
An actress known primarily for her own murder gleefully watches herself on the big screen in a Westwood Village movie theater, and in that moment, we finally experience the gorgeous humanity and not the horrendous end of this lovely person - Once Upon A Time In…Hollywood
When you have an icy, almost robotic main character, you need Alfre Woodard to masterfully play drunk and show you all of her other shades - Clemency
I don’t care if the film felt like a xerox copy of the original or if the CGI ruined everything, because Billy Eichner’s Timon arrives at a now barren, picked apart Pride Rock and blurts out,  “Talk about a fixer-upper. I think you went heavy on the carcass.”  - The Lion King
When was the last time you saw a film where a character stops the action to demand of another, “I want you to know about me!”? - The Peanut Butter Falcon
A young Irish indentured servant in 1825 Tasmania watches helplessly as a soldier kills her baby just to stop its crying, and that’s only the beginning of a long line of justifications for her rage - The Nightingale
Nothing like a well-placed coffee mug to illustrate your main theme in the final image of your movie - Knives Out
Tracy Letts’ Henry Ford II feels the sheer power of one of his race cars and provides the most beautiful, unexpected crying scene of the year - Ford v. Ferrari
The funniest crossing a busy freeway scene since Eddie Murphy attempted it in 1999’s Bowfinger - Good Boys
A split second choice at what should have been a routine traffic stop changes the lives of our unlucky, racially profiled, sweet, smart but “not a match” Tinder date protagonists - Queen & Slim
A passport inspector asks, “Purpose of your visit?”  The young man replies, “I’m going to see Bruce Springsteen’s hometown.”  As he stamps his papers, the inspector responds, “I can’t think of a better reason to visit the United States than to see the home of The Boss” - Blinded By The Light
A horribly brutalized gay man wafts to shore only to see the haunting image of a scary clown reaching out to perhaps save him?  Nah, he’s a midnight snack - It Chapter 2
A young child, caught between his parents arguing over the phone, conveys painful messages to the supposed adults in the equation - Honey Boy
Sometimes an unreturned text can send you spiraling so far out of control that you ruin your life and everyone else’s around you - Waves
That last moment of bliss between a husband and wife right before their quiet mountaintop hamlet gets invaded by the sounds of planes overheard and the Nazis arriving to recruit them - A Hidden Life
You may have gotten in shape, but without true growth, the fat girl inside you won’t hesitate to shame another - Brittany Runs A Marathon
Gabriel Luna wins the award for sexiest performance in a terrible movie as a new killing machine decked out in tight pants and a killer stare - Terminator: Dark Fate
A mentally disturbed aspiring comic turned homicidal maniac disastrously makes his late night talk show debut, posing ominously backstage, skipping out with a bizarre tap twirl flourish, and then…well…like a true comic…he kills - Joker
Alec Baldwin, in a stunning monologue, basically shows us the early rise of people like Donald Trump, as all sense of hope gets sapped away - Motherless Brooklyn
An old sailor and his new charge stare down the camera right at us, somehow letting us know that we have no idea what bleak is, so hold on tight - The Lighthouse
A farmer (a never better Bill Camp) barges in on a corporate lawyer to get him to investigate the dying cattle in his hometown.  From such humble beginnings comes something which affects every single one of us - Dark Waters
An aspiring Scottish country singer sneaks away from her Grand Ole Opry tour group to sing alone on the main stage and perhaps get discovered. When she learns that everybody does that, she realizes she isn’t that special after all - Wild Rose
Biggest cinematic moment of dread: When a Chinese billionaire reopens a shuttered Ohio GM plant and hires back some of the workers at half their salaries and without benefits, you know you’ve just boarded a slow moving train to hell - American Factory
Did he do it?  Is he a terrorist?  Or is he a good guy?  How much of his tragic past is still present within him?  That final image will keep me guessing forever - Luce
A devoted Chinese Communist Party Member and abortion specialist knows she can never redeem herself from the part she played in ruining so many lives - One Child Nation
You may take issue with the implications that her real life character traded sex for intel and that she’s no longer alive to defend herself,  but Olivia Wilde gave one of the most vivid, exciting, ballsy performances of the year - Richard Jewell
An actual minute of silence in a film would normally be its death knell, but when Tom Hanks as Mr. Rogers demands it, we rethink our own hurried, impulsive lives - A Beautiful Day In The Neighborhood
Sure she overdid it.  Yes she had an odd, hairy, uncanny face and strangely manicured nails for days.  Overwrought doesn’t even begin to describe it, but when she hits that big note and belts out, “Touch me / It’s so easy to leave me / All alone with the memory / Of my days in the sun”, damned if I didn’t snot cry right along with her - Cats

Horror Hamlet
Hamlet is my favourite Shakespeare play, which has been the case since high school. I’ve seen many interpretations of Hamlet over the years. I remember seeing Heavy Metal Hamlet in the Botanic Gardens in Brisbane when I was still at school, which left a lasting impression. I saw Kenneth Branagh’s 1996 version of Hamlet in the cinema, which no doubt has influenced my interpretation.
I've been going through some old boxes, and found some journals from school, hence my nostalgic mood.
Do you have a favourite teacher from your school years that you still think about fondly? Well, my favourite teacher was Ms Poulsen. She had purple hair, loved Joy Division and let us stencil poetry on the classroom wall. She was very encouraging, passionate and an inspirational teacher. I still have the letter she wrote to me at the end of grade 12, and the bookmark she picked for me personally. She really cared about her students.
Ms Poulsen set us a task in grade 12 English to interpret Hamlet and write in our journal the ideas outlining our film version of Hamlet as director of the production.
In August 1998, when I was 17, I wrote my Director’s Address, which I’ve had a kick out of reading today, and I thought others might too.
‘The vision of Hamlet that I intend to direct is an R18+ horror film. Hamlet is a particularly violent play so far as the emotions of some of the characters express.
I wish to bring this out with sound and special effects. For example, the scene in which Polonius is slain by Hamlet, Hamlet could cut Polonius’ head off so that blood splatters on the walls and his head rolls off, and in his last breath of life the head attempts to bite Hamlet’s leg. His jaws clamp on tight and are difficult for Hamlet to remove [I was a bit obsessed with Jaws]. Gertrude may be hysterically screaming for what she has witnessed, and horror that Hamlet would turn on her next.
Words spoken to Claudius by Hamlet could be ones of complete verbal abuse - swearing, intimidation and veins popping in the neck. Hamlet could be a chain smoker displaying the stereotypical belief that people smoke in order to calm their nerves.
When Ophelia drowns it may be a struggle to survive with ranting and raving.
The final scene in which people are poisoned could induce projectile vomiting and blood spurting out of the mouth and ears. Violent palpitations could follow death. The room in which Gertrude, Laertes, Claudius and Hamlet are poisoned would be covered in vomit and blood.
The cast of my film version of Hamlet, if I had a choice and availability of any actor/actress I wish, would be the following: Hamlet - Gary Oldman; Ophelia - Jennifer Ehle; Claudius - Warren Clarke; Gertrude - Emma Thompson; Polonius - John Malkovich; Laertes - Rowan Atkinson (snobbish); Fortinbras - Robert Carlyle; Horatio - John Hannah, Rosencrantz - Rik Mayall; Guildenstern - Adrian Edmondson; and Ghost - Alan Rickman (evil voice).
My interpretation of the play Hamlet is that is is a play of death, the pursuit of death and violence which accompanies death. That is why I have chosen, as director, to make a horror film out of the play. I will be exaggerating the violence which exists so that a horror film will be developed.
My interpretation of the motivations of the characters is as follows: Hamlet is motivated by the thought of murdering his uncle; Ophelia is motivated by the love she feels for her family and Hamlet; Claudius is motivated by money, power and Gertrude; Gertrude is motivated by her duty as mother to Hamlet and Queen of Denmark; Polonius is motivated by gaining power and trust in the royal family of Denmark; Laertes is motivated firstly, by returning to France and secondly, by avenging his father’s murder; Fortinbras is motivated by gaining the territory his father lost and by physical violence (pursues war); Horatio is motivated by protecting his best friend Hamlet; R & G are motivated by sucking up to the royal family possibly in hope for gaining an important position; and the Ghost is motivated by ensuring that Hamlet kills Claudius.
My vision for the production of Hamlet in terms of costumes and set is that the costumes be for Hamlet dark and flamboyant. I think I desire something similar to that of Dracula in Bram Stoker’s Dracula (directed by Francis Ford Coppola), of that period.
Dracula was published in 1897, so I imagine the period which will inspire the costumes for my production of Hamlet will be 19th century.
I thought Winona Ryder was beautiful in Bram Stoker’s Dracula, however I wish to cast Jennifer Ehle starring alongside Gary Oldman as Ophelia. The costumes of Mina in Dracula will be idea for Ophelia with Ehle’s face.
Ehle recently acted in Wilde - Bram Stoker and Oscar Wilde were friends!
The castle at Elsinore shall me Gothic in architecture, dark and overwhelming. The rest of the characters will be dressed in 19th century costumes with red as the underlying colour. The Gothic castle I have in mind is of the 12th - 13th century in stone.
To make Hamlet a horror film, certain areas in the plot must be emphasised. The appearance of the Ghost in the opening scene must be absolutely terrifying. Bernardo, Francisco, Marcellus and Horatio must behave as though they truly believe that the Ghost is going to kill them in the most gruesome manner. To make this possible, Alan Rickman’s voice must be at its deadliest and face at his scariest. The special effects must create a feeling of hell fire when the audience views the Ghost for the first time. Devil creatures and demons will surround the Ghost as he has just come from hell itself. A transparent image of Hamlet’s fathers head with dry blood at the ears (where the poison was poured) would be rather shocking. The Ghost must be forceful and threatening on the point that his murder must be avenged.
Tumblr media
This is the image of hell I portrayed in my journal, with a rubbing of Alan Rickman’s face at the centre and Norman Lindsay’s hellish creatures and Norman Lindsay’s self portrait at the top left
In Act II Scene IV when Hamlet meets the Ghost of his father he must be amazed at the transformation of a person he once knew into some kind of monster [I too was surprised when Metallica released their song of the same name in 2003]. This idea and the entrance of the evil spirit into Hamlet’s soul encourages him to do all that he can to rid the world of his uncle. However, struggle ensues within Hamlet as to how far he shall go for his father’s spirit without acting completely immorally which is against his nature. The Ghost consumes him during acts of violence, such as, in Act III Scene IV when Polonius is slain.
In Act IV Scene V when Ophelia goes mad she must behave out-of-control. The nature of her madness turns to extreme violence to anyone who comes close to her. She bangs her head against the floor and walls and she leaves howling in pain. Her death in drowning is one of thrashing and violence. Screams which penetrate the soul and thanks to the grand sound effects make the audience disbelieve that Ophelia is the same person. Blood spurts from her wounds due to the intensity of her screams and thrashing about.
Act V Scene II the last scene of the play is filled with horror to the climax of the play. The poisoning of Gertrude, Laertes, Claudius and Hamlet involves projectile vomiting and blood spurting out of the mouth and ears. Possibly due to the ingredients of the poison. Violent palpitations follow death.
The camera techniques must involve crystal clear images and many close-up shots of Hamlet’s face so that expressions are important. Swift movement in times of murder and violence will build the effect.
The problem in doing this is justifying the amount of violence. For an audience in 1998 to make Hamlet original and intriguing for this audience, to believe a horror film would be an excellent way to do this, and attract a younger audience who may not wish to be bored by lengthy 4 hour versions which have previously been put out! This does not mean that I do not admire and enjoy the Kenneth Branagh version.’
If you’ve read to this point, thank you for going on this journey down memory lane with me. This month I’m thinking about identity for GLAM Blog Club, and looking into my past is part of my efforts to prepare for writing a blog about myself and who I am.

Cats 2019 Review
Kind of? Also a lot of spoilers and long!
So I just watched it and I gotta say it’s not that bad. Maybe this is just because Cats is my special interest and I generally love anything that has to do with it but here’s what I think about every song.
Also keep in mind that I live in Germany ans they translated every song and not just the dialog. So I’ll be both talking about the German version I saw in the song and the English version I listened to on YouTube.
1. Overture: It’s the Introduction song what can I say. It sounded good like always the only thing a little bit weird was when the cats kind of danced in a circle around the bag Victoria was still in. But other than that it was good
2. Jellicle Songs for Jellicle Cats: At first I didn’t know about the electronic beat but I gotta say it sounds really good. It adds a whole new feeling to it and when it’s starts picking up it’s really amazing. Now the German version is basically the same except that when they sing the part Jellicle Songs for Jellicle Cats they only translated the for, but it would be hard to rhyme otherwise and fit the longer German words in with the melody. They also took the same lyrics from the original German soundtrack and didn’t retranslate it which is good. I also really loved that Macavaty said the word “What” as a reaction to Victoria and that every cat each sang a cat type alone. The scene seemed a little bit weird but it didn’t stand out to me as much as others so I can’t really say anything about it
3. The Naming of Cats: Not as creepy as the stage production but definetly still creepy. I don’t like how they completely changed Demeter to a grey mean cat and had her and I think Cassandra start the song by asking Victoria what her name is. But I like how the only one cats sang a name and the rest was sung together. However I really don’t know how to feel about Munkustrap basically performing the mating dance together with Victoria. That just had a really weird and kind of uncomfortable feeling to it. Just like basically everyone trying to seduce Victoria throughout the whole song but you get used to it. I can’t find the English version on YouTube so I can’t say anything about that.
4. The Old Gumbie Cat: Weird and uncomfortable. The mice were not okay, the roaches not either and even tho the singing was good they completly ruined Jenny’s Character. I just really don’t like her in this movie. Especially how she sometimes just picks up a roach and eats it? Like what? It was overall just very weird. And that part where she changes into the dress is just not okay. The German version just like the English. And they cut out the Tap!
5. The Rum Tum Tugger: Two words, very uncomfortable. He’s overly straight, no Bombalurina and instead Victoria, weird joke from Jenny, Misto saying his line to Victoria instead of Tugger, every girl with no exception is a fangirl and that weird milk scene. Jason you’re great but this Rum Tum Tugger is not it, not at all. In the German version Jenny makes a joke about his high voice that I’m not gonna repeat, it was just very uncomfortable. I don’t know what she does in the English version and I don’t know if I want to know. So in short I really really don’t like this part.
6. Grizabella the Glamour Cat: It sounded good. I just don’t like that Demeter again seems more mean rather than sad or something like that and that again she is paired with who I believe Cassandra is and it does seem a little bit weird that Munk first stops them from singing but then joins in. But other than that I liked it. Jennifer Hudson did really good. Again, I don’t know why but I can’t find the English version.
7. Bustopher Jones: This is a different Bustopher than the stage version for sure but I still like the song. There was this awkward moment when they wanted to catapult him on top of that thing and then the champagne scene after but you can pretty much ignore that and then it’s a good song. I also liked the little butler guy, he was nice. It was overall a fun little relief song from all the awkwardness and uncomfortable things before this.
8. Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer: It’s different to say the least but I absolutely LOVE it! It’s my favorite part of the whole movie. It gives a whole new feeling to them and it just sounds really nice. It also for once doesn’t seem like they’re trying to seduce Victoria but rather spoil her a little and invite her to come with them to their shenanigans. It has a very nice and relaxing tone to it and the singing from both the English actors and German voice actors is really amazing. You can really forget about all the bad movie things during this song. They have a great dynamic too! With each other but with Victoria too. Ah, I just love this song a whole lot
9. Old Deutoronomy: No Tugger and therefore no brother dynamic between him and Munk. He just sang the whole song by himself. I’m not gonna lie it was still good and I liked it, they did a good job and I actually love Judi Dench als Old Doot. The song still had a nice feeling to it but it’s just not the same without Tugger, sorry
10. The Jellicle Ball: It wasn’t as great as the stage version and some of the dance moves were really awkward. It was mostly Victoria and Munkustrap dancing and every now and then someone trying to seduce Victoria again. It was okay, I’m pretty neutral about it.
11. Memory and Beautiful Ghosts: Memory was great but they just took away the importance off Victoria touching her and let her get to Grizabella way too early and they completely cut out Jemima/Syllabub! But Jennifer did really good once again and I can’t complain about her part at all, it looked really good too. Now for Beautiful Ghosts. It’s an absolutely beautiful song and very emotional. It’s sung so good too, German as well as English. In German it’s the Shadows of the Night instead of Beautiful Ghosts by the way but I love it. The only thing that I don’t really like about it is that it’s sung by Victoria. Don’t get me wrong Victoria is great but she’s just a dance character for me and doesn’t sing and I as well as many others headcannon her as mute and maybe even deaf so this doesn’t really work but I can get over that fact because as I said it’s really fucking beautiful.
12. The moments of Happiness: Cut short but beautiful performance by Judi. Again, I hate that they just completly cutout Jemima/Syllabub. Other than that I don’t have anything to say about this one.
13. Gus the Theatre Cat: Second favorite part of the whole movie! It was so cute and amazing. Just sadly no Jellylorum. But Sir Ian McKellen did so good and I absolutely adored this performance, also the way Misto helped and was incorporated. I don’t even know what to say about this, it was just so good. He seemed so happy singing to them and how the three kittens reacted when he sang about them was adorable. And the reaction of all the cats at the End was great because everyone treated him like a real star and that was great. Also amazing was that Munkustrap still seemed to be really excited to listen to him again.
14. Skimbleshanks the Railway Cat: My 3rd favorite part of the whole movie! It was also amazing and adorable. I loved that they made it a tap dance. The first time sounded like a train starting and that was amazing. The second was just really adorable with all the other cats dancing with him and mimicking him. Then the scene in the train was absolutely amazing and cute. The singing was great even tho I was a little said that Old Doot didn’t sing any of it. But German as well as English did a great job and I just adore it. It was only a bit awkward at the end when he did these endless turns into the air because of Macavity but it’s still absolutely amazing.
15. Macavity the Mystery Cat: I absolutely loved the Song in English but really didn’t like it in German. The sole reason I could forgive them that they cut out Demeter’s part and just had Bombalurina sing the whole thing was that Idris’ singing at the End was absolutely amazing. I loved his performance but the German voice actor just felt kind of flat and not really fitting. He started out good but as the film went on he got worse and worse. Taylor did a good job by the way and the German voice actress wasn’t that bad either, but she didn’t do good either. Now the movie scene was really good at the end but like the first three quarters were horrible. I get that the catnip was supposed to make them obidient and so that they wouldn’t try ti intervene but it just seemed to make them incredibly horny. That part where they showed Mistoffelees on the chair? Not necessary and really really uncomfortable. But as I said the End was still really good and the English version sounds amazing too.
16. Mr Mistoffelees: NO! NO NO NO! This was by far the worst part of the movie. Why would he sing the song himself? No Tugger dynamic whatsoever? It gave me so much Anxiety. Like how they forced him to go on stage and sing about himself, how he said “Please don’t force me to do this”, Munkustraps looks during the whole song and the very awkward moments when the tried to get Old Doot back but it didn’t work. Then the only time Tugger did anything that stood out was at the very end when he sang higher than the others and that’s it. You don’t have to present them as boyfriends but you can’t just completely erase their whole bond because at the very least they’re very good friends. It’s important that he sings Misto’s Song because Misto seeks validation and someone that says “Hey, you can do it” and Tugger is the one who does that. He knows he has amazing powers but still wants to know that from someone else and that’s very important to him. The bit with him and Victoria singing at the end was somewhat cute but still. It’s nothing like the Stage version, like at all. He didn’t have a dance solo, no Tugger and instead Munk, Misto almost sang the whole song himself and everyone seemed to not really believe in him and was more like “this is  not gonna work anyway but we have no other choice. I could rant about this for hours but I’ll stop it here and say that I really hate this version of the song because they completely ruined it and it’s whole meaning. Worst part of movie in my opinion.
17. Memory (Reprise): Tears, Tears man. It was emotional as always and both Jennifer and the German voice actress did amazing jobs. But, once again, they completly cut out Jemima/Syllabub and replaced her with Victoria and took away the importance of someone touching her. It sounded great, yes, but the meaning and importance of certain things has been taken out and I don’t like that. I also was never a big fan of the German lyrics but they’re not that bad. In short they missed some great opportunities and really important things but still made it a great performance.
18. The Ad-Dressing of Cats: It was never one of my favorite songs but it does sound really amazing and that’s not different in the movie, the German just as the English version. I also loved the Judi looked at the camera during the song, it gave me good goosebumps and it felt like she was truly talking to me and that was nice. I mean I can totally see why people think it’s uncomfortable but I honestly really liked it, especially because Old Deutoronomy always looks at the audience while singing this song so it really fits.
Wow, what a ride. While I absolutely couldn’t stand some parts of the movie, overall I really liked it and enjoyed watching it. So I’ll see when I have the energy to do Part 2 with the characters ranked. And remember this is just my opinion and you can think whatever you want of this movie.

Deconstruct Jennifer Lopez’ “El Anillo” with Skilled Producer DalePlay [ANATOMY OF A SONG]
Tumblr media
Producing pop, EDM and Latin hits, multi-talented DalePlay showcases his wide-ranging abilities as a writer, producer and DJ. By age twenty, he won his first BMI Latin award, and since then he’s worked with heavy-hitters such as Becky G, Diplo and Skrillex. Signed to Warner Chappell, he’s become a prominent emerging figure within his industry, but it was not an easy road to success.
Jesus “DalePlay” Herrera grew up bilingual as an immigrant from Venezuela, moving to Miami at the age of thirteen. At eighteen, he suffered from a debilitating stroke. Though unable to walk, speak or eat, he immersed himself in videos about music production, learning everything he could about the techniques.
Influenced by both English and Spanish music, DalePlay stays true to his Latin roots within his production. One of the most notable artists he’s collaborated with is singer/actress Jennifer Lopez. Released in 2018 and best described as sexy and provocative, is Jennifer Lopez's Latin pop hit “El Anillo.”
youtube
I sat down with DalePlay to deconstruct “El Anillo”, discussing everything from his unique producing style to working with a musical icon.
Brain: The Thought Process
OTW: Can you walk us through the producing process for “El Anillo.”
Sure, I get a phone call on a Thursday from Sony and no pressure! I just needed to come up with a hit overnight for the AMAZING Jennifer Lopez, because she was coming in next Friday. NO PRESSURE RIGHT? So on the same evening, I took my time to go through her music, and I studied Jennifer Lopez like I was studying for a math test in school. I wanted to get that ‘A’ very badly. At that time I was listening a lot to Brazilian funk or “Funk carioca,” as it's known in Brazil, and I thought that Jennifer needed something fresh, something she hasn’t done before. So I slept with my boots on (honestly I did) and made my way to the studio early the next day. As I get there, I get another call from Sony saying that Jennifer was coming to the studio on Monday actually, not Friday! So EVEN BETTER, MORE PRESSURE FOR ME. I then showed what I’ve worked on so far from the night before to my co-writers and one of them, Oscarcito, sent a voice note to Jennifer to show her the drums, asked her what she felt about it, and she liked it! We get this green light so we keep working on it! The title of the song “El Anillo” (ring) came to us after we read some gossips columns over “Is Jennifer getting engaged or not?” We thought it was a dope title, and we stuck with it as it made sense. The song took us about 30 minutes to write and that’s pretty much it. On Monday, Jennifer came in and played the song over and over again, and she absolutely loved it.
Heart: The Core Emotion
OTW: How did the track resonate with you?
What resonated with me was the freedom of creativity I had at all times with the song. Freedom is basically what my music is based upon. No freedom, no creation!
OTW: What was your experience like working with Jennifer Lopez?
Jennifer Lopez is an incredible artist who inspired me to jump out of my comfort zone and make something different. Apart from getting inspired by watching the great hustler that she is, she gave me that freedom to create too (I like that shit a lot). Seeing a woman like her working hard at all times and being able to embrace “El Anillo” like she has done, it’s something that affected me a lot. And DAMN, that woman is beautiful!
Legs: The Means to Take Off
OTW: What really inspired you to become a producer?
I started messing with music by the age of 16, as I desperately wanted to help my family. We left Venezuela, and we were facing so many financial problems back then and all I wanted was a gateway out of it. So yeah, nothing romantic about it at the time, I just wanted to make money period. But money didn’t come as fast as I needed it, so I left that aside as the need for money wasn’t enough fuel to keep me going. But by the age of 18, I found myself debilitated. I've suffered a brain stroke due to a surgery, and I couldn’t walk, I couldn’t talk, and my left side was badly damaged. All I had was my will to keep me going, it was just me, myself and I. I refused to let myself go; there were times I would refuse to be fed just so I could push myself harder to understand that I could overcome myself, that my mind was stronger and my resistance was each day. So for a way out, I once again looked at music with second intentions and she looked back at me and ultimately saved me. I fell in love with her for what she gave me without asking much in return, but just my belief in her fully. I spent a year at home with a lot of free time, learning on how to walk again, how to speak again and so I chose to do something else with all that learning. Music was all I wanted to know about and since then I haven’t stopped!

Hands: Advice For Producers Who Need A Lift
OTW: What advice would you give a young producer looking to make a name for themselves in the industry?
There must be something you are passionate about, something that challenges you so don’t give up because there must be something!
OTW: You overcame an extreme hardship in your life and came out of it so much stronger, what motivational words would you give to others dealing with a similar situation?
Find yourself something to fall in love with, fall in love with it hard! Don’t cheat on it, persist on it. I fell for music and I guess she fell for me too.
OTW: Lastly, who are your Ones to Watch?
Definitely Oscarcito, Servando and looking forward to work with new writers and artists.
