RNM 2x05 - I'll Stand By You

So just a little note from me, the person behind the season 2 detailing.  I am trying really really hard to keep emotion out of these posts...which is really really hard for me because I'm an inherently emotional person. I'm a glass case of emotion, ready to shatter at any given moment. (#dramatic)  But I want to be true to the intent of this blog and keep my feelings, biases, and, you know, shipping out of this blog.

It was really really hard to do with this episode. Because I straight up ugly cried for like, 45 of the 60 minutes. 😂

So I guess, the point is, I'm proud of myself and sticking to the details here. My regular blog is where I'm doing the emotional flip out thing! 😂

EPISODE SUMMARY:

ACCEPTING REALITY — The discovery of some complications with Max’s (Nathan Dean) pod forces Liz (Jeanine Mason), Michael (Michael Vlamis) and Isobel (Lily Cowles) to confront the possibility that they may not be able to save him. Elsewhere, Maria (Heather Hemmens) and Alex (Tyler Blackburn) make amends. Kimberly McCullough directed the episode written by Alanna Bennett & Jason Gavin (#205). Original airdate 4/13/2020. 

DETAILS:

Max/Isobel/Michael reunite at age 11 according to what Michael tells Alex in 1x10.  So that would make the opening of this episode set in 2002ish.

Michael tells Max and Isobel, "I remember you. I don't know you."

"After nobody adopted me for a year they just stuck me with the name of that trucker who found us."

"I didn't ask you for anything."

This is like the thesis statement of Michael's whole history with Max in the flashbacks.

"Don't pay more than you collect, kid. Passing credit back and forth is a good way to get stuck with somebody forever."

"How long has that been happening?"

"Rosa, have electrical appliances been malfunctioning around you?"

"I really thought it was just a side effect of the handprint."

"If being in the pod introduced a new protein into your system it could have altered your DNA too. You could be developing abilities."

"Liz, look. The handprint is changing.  It's smaller."

"It's fading."

"Tell me this is a good thing."

"I don't think so."

Michael and Liz theorizing on why the pod shorted out:

"The pod's got a charge. It's like a battery powering the preservation process. This one's gone dead."

"Did the generator blow the electromagnetic threshold?"

"I think a surge came from the pod itself. But that pod has lasted almost a century. It shouldn't glitch out."

"Okay, well, then, this one did."

"All right, stop. It doesn't matter why the pod is broken. It just is. So how long does Max have?"

"My theory is that being tethered to Rosa through the mark is what kept Max from going brain-dead, and in turn the stasis process is what kept the mark from fading. So he could be gone by tonight."

"Okay, well, we have three more pods. So let's just put him into another pod."

"No. He's just gonna do it again. I haven't told you everything. I didn't want to scare you. I didn't want to be the one that took the hope away."

"Talk now, Rosa. Right now."

"I was seeing Max in my nightmares months before I told you about it, and he was begging me to stop you. He said that he was in a lot of pain in there."

"That's Noah's pod. Noah told us it was broken. It wasn't keeping him in stasis. He could feel time passing. None of us thought of that."

"We've been doing everything we can to make Max stronger. He pulled his own plug."

Note...as far as we know Isobel was the only one who knew about Noah's pod being broken.  In 1x12 it was before Liz arrived at the house that he told them about the broken pod, so only Max and Isobel heard that part of the story.

As a non sciencey person, I was wondering if bioethics class was a real thing. Tonight I saw an interview on the news with a UC Berkeley bioethics professor on COVID. So yes, it's a thing.

"It's more than that. And it's less than that. We were friends when we were kids, but now Max reminds me of a bunch of stuff that I'd rather forget. The only thing that we have in common anymore is Isobel."

"Biology Club. Max hated science. He was in that club for four years just to watch your sister chew on the end of her pencil."

Michael seemed excited about the job at Foster's Ranch until he found out that Max set it up for him.  Max found out about it from his dad (only like the 2nd or 3rd mention of his dad in the series so far).

"When I got back in town I asked Max why you and your brilliant mind hadn't changed the world yet. He said you didn't care about the world enough to bother changing it. He believed you could."

Max and Isobel in the mindscape:

"You're okay. I could feel something was wrong with you.  Everything felt…"

"Cold. I know."

"You can't be here. It's finally ending.  I can feel it. But I don't know what happens if you're in my head when I die."

"So it's true? You want this?"

"I could feel my connection to the outside world getting stronger, so I snapped. I couldn't take it anymore. I released a surge. You have to let me go, Iz."

"I can't take it anymore."

"Okay."

"I am so sorry."

"I just want to memorize this."

"Okay. Okay.  I need you to tell Liz something."

"You can tell her yourself.  She and Kyle are prepping for surgery.  They're going to use the faulty heart. She just wants to talk to you before you die."

"No. No."

"You won't be suffering. They're just gonna bring you back and then let you go."

"No you have to stop this.  You cannot bring me back under any circumstances."

"Max? What is really going on?"

"I am dangerous.  Whatever Liz is bringing back is not me. It's just some broken shell."

The 21st birthday flashback

Isobel gets Michael to help move Max after getting drunk on tequila.  He passed out in front of the tattoo parlor. It's the same tattoo parlor Michael goes to at the end of the episode.

Max's weird drunken statement.

"The thing is, there has to be there. Okay? There's always three. Until the very end.  I'll show you...What it means is you should be here…'cause it's all broken without three. So we'll figure it out.  You'll find your way back."

On Max becoming a deputy:

"You know he did the whole police academy thing because of you, right? He thinks you're gonna get into the kind of trouble you can't get out of if you don't know someone."

Back in the mindscape:

"I figured it all out. She, there's an energy to suffering, there's an energy to death, and when I heal people, I absorb that energy. So when I resurrected Rosa, I took in ten years of emptiness. So if you resurrect me, you will be bringing back an infection. Don't want… I don't want to come back as a monster. I don't want to hurt anyone that I care about."

"That's what this is about? We've been hurting, Max. We don't work without you."

"You will! You will. You are stronger now than when I died. All of you are. You, Michael, Liz, you will survive this. The three of you. No, you need to stop them, Iz. Now."

"Okay. I love you."

"You too." Isobel disappears.

We don't see that Max is chained down until this next exchange with Rosa. Isobel didn't see that detail as far as we know.  Didn't hear the chains clanking when they stood and hugged. Only after Isobel left.

"I'm sorry this is happening."

"Isobel is lying. She is buying time.  You know she'll never let me go. But you can feel the darkness too, right? That's why you don't like being in my head. Because you know it's real."

"I didn't want that to be true, but yes."

"I know my sister and I know your sister and they'll never give up. So you have to be the one to stop this surgery, okay? Or I will destroy everything that we love. You have to stop them to save them. Now go.  Please, Rosa. Go."

Isobel explaining to Liz

"When he saved Rosa he absorbed all of that dark energy. He's gonna have to expel it."

"And he's afraid he's gonna kill someone when he does."

"Yeah. So we just need someone stronger than Max to take that hit...if he thinks he needs to protect us he obviously doesn't know how capable we are. Bring him back, Liz. I'll handle the rest."

"I get it now. It's gotta be the three of us."

"He would never pull his plug to end his own suffering. Unless he thought he was saving us from something. And I'm a little sick of his heroic martyr crap."

In case you missed it, Michael did not know that.  At the beginning of the hospital sequence Isobel is telling Liz what she learned in Max's mindscape and says that she hasn't been able to get ahold of Michael.  Michael figured it out on his own. He finally "got it".

The pacemaker:

Isobel with Max at the end… everything is gone except the Jeep. And Bright Eyes playing (the song he and Liz danced to on their first date back in 2008). And then his eyes close and Bright Eyes fades away.

“First thing I remember is the three of us. We woke up terrified and lost. But together. And then all of the sudden I was alone. I got real good at being alone. I had given up on people entirely. And then you found me again. Hell of hero move. You showed up just in time. When you are a kid who nobody loves, kindness is a currency. Friendship doesn’t means jack. Family just lies, and hurts, and leaves. I’ve only ever known love to be temporary. So yeah, I push people away. Every time someone threatens to care about me I test their love until they have to leave. Connection is conditional. Everybody eventually gives up on the guy who refuses to be rescued. But you were the only one who I couldn’t run off. You never believed me when I tried to be something I wasn’t. So this thing in your chest, it might give your heart a pretty solid kick every once in a while. Consider it payback. It’s my hero move, Max. If you wake up, you consider us even, okay? If you wake up, we can be a family.”

Max is in the coma for three weeks.  Wakes up at the secret lab (instead of his house, which is where he was previously.  I'm guessing it was a planned wake up because he's no longer plugged into all of the IVs and whatnot.

"I begged you to understand."

"Max, it's gonna be fine."

"No… I told you to let me go. I can feel it inside me."

"It's...it's symmetry, okay? It's just energy for energy.  We can deal with that. Fight it, Max. This isn't you."

"I don't want to hurt you. I need to get out. I need to get away from you, from everyone."

"I can't let you do that."

Max shoves Isobel and runs. When he shoves her there's a slight ringing like the sound they use when the aliens use their powers.  Isobel follows and stops him with her powers.

"I made a promise that if you came back and you weren't Max, and you were actually going to hurt people that I would kill you. I figure, hey, you got to play God. Make life and death decisions all on your own. Well it's my turn now."

Trumpty Dumpty

There used to be a legend, in my family, that my mom’s grandfather on her mother’s side, was the son of an, “Indian squaw.”  Without getting too technical, research on Ancestry.Com about the woman in question, proved beyond all doubt that she was white as the driven snow.

Why?  Because she happened to be Mormon... and Mormons happen to be extremely serious about genealogy... and have been since long before the internet came along.

This woman, my great great grandmother, had a thoroughly researched family tree on Ancestry going back to the Mayflower*... as do all Mormons, because they take history seriously.

I am certain this is why Mitt Romney, today turned out to be the one and only Republican who voted to convict and remove Donald Trump.

...Because while all this talk about how they’ll be viewed by history rings hollow to every other GOP Senator currently in Congress, to Mitt Romney, it means something, because he knows his descendants will never forget who he was, or what he did with his life... and that to join in on the acquittal of Trump would bring shame to his family for generations to come.

And he knew that... because we all know, that nobody in the near future, or the distant future, or the very remote future, will ever think of Donald Trump as anything but a shitty person, a terrible President, and an appallingly myopic world leader.

But yes... there was no flash removal of Trump today.  He was acquitted, to the shock of  nobody.  But it is worth mentioning that the 48 Senators who voted to convict and remove Trump, represent eighteen million more people than the fifty-two Senators who acquitted him.

Eighteen million.

Immediately after his acquittal, Trump tweeted a CGI video flying over Trump campaign signs that said, “Trump 2020,” then, “Trump 2024,” then 28, 30, 40, and so on until beyond the year 9000 or some bullshit, before ending on Trump 4EVA.

I saw this, passing by a TV at work today, an it spooked me pretty good, because... well, here at MegaCircuit9Universe we talk a lot about time travel and in our model, he (his hyperversal twins on all worldlines) are well known for always attempting to, and sometimes succeeding at, becoming a dictator for life.

News folk passed this tweet off as a simple troll, as the video was a modified version of one created last year by Time Magazine (of all magazines) to promote an article about how Trumpism will outlast Trump.

I didn’t read that article, so I can’t comment on it, but the point here is, that was not just a simple troll.  That was Trump, surviving one of the final checks on his power, putting us on notice of his intention to be our new dictator for life.

I wonder what the AI bot coalition is thinking about that today... especially since yesterday, at the State of the Union address, he continued to crow about, and take full credit for, the booming economy... that they continuously keep from derailing... because for most of them, it is the primary objective.

I would presume that they, as bots, would seek to exhaust every other possible option available, before actually allowing the economy to tank.  And... there are still other options to exhaust in the quest to dislodge Trump from power... within a reasonable time frame.**

This same truth is what likely lead Speaker Pelosi to, just at the end of Trump’s ridiculous SOTU speech (in which he stopped to administer surprise gifts to audience members, encourage cheers of four more years, and in general made the affair a circus of lies) To tear up her copy of the speech, on camera, standing directly behind him.

I should stop to note here that his SOTU, for as crazy as it was, was quite positive in tone... so, very much the opposite of the one I recently suggested might flip the Senate against him... one full of wrath and nonsensical raving.

At any rate, Pelosi’s stunt of ripping up the speech had the immediate effect of stealing all the press coverage about SOTU for the rest of the night and into today.  From the minute the speech was over, the only thing anybody in the media or online wanted to talk about was this stunt of hers... with it going viral on social media in the form of animated GIFs... being praised by the left, and decried by the right.

But many now speculate that this was also a signal that the House is not done with Trump.  Indeed, some say the whole Impeachment trial, it’s timing delayed by a month, thanks to the Speaker, has been a kind of opening act to warm the audience up for the headliner act... which will be about court cases landing against his obstruction of subpoenas, his taxes coming out finally, more FOIA requests coming to fruition, more crimes coming to light, etc.

It doesn’t require any aluminum foil to imagine that such a second act... or third act, if you count the Mueller probe as act one... could finally bring the roof down on Trump’s head in this, an election year.

We all know the Ukraine shakedown was just the tip of an enormous iceberg, which, beneath the water’s surface, is the size of Mauna Kea... and that a shit ton of it will be coming to light soon... as courts strike down his past attempts at damage control... grant information requests to newspapers... as oversight hearings continue in the house... as books are published... and on.

What’s different now, after the impeachment trial, is that we all now also know which Senators are consciously complicit in Trump’s grand crime scheme, and it’s cover up.

We’ve had an idea for a while which House Representatives were complicit (Nunes), but that’s not such a big deal anymore, as we got back the House in 2018, but it took this impeachment trial to expose those poker faced Senators.

Senators play things a lot closer to the vest (Except for McConnell and Graham) which is natural, given that there are only 100 of them, and each one has a lot more power than the average House Rep... thus, a lot more power to lose, if they dirty their shoes in the muck that Reps will occasionally roll about in like swine.

The Impeachment essentially put a gun to their heads... confess your loyalty, Trump or the Constitution... because it cannot be both.

And now that 52 of them confessed, beyond any doubt, that their loyalty is to Trump, over the Constitution... well, now they’re all fair game, when it comes to exposing the greater bulk of that corruption iceberg.  

Lev Parnas named Lindsey Graham as being in the loop with the Ukraine extortion scheme... and Bolton named Cipollone.  And now you can bet your ass a lot more Senators and White House cabinet members will be exposed as being in that loop... and other loops... all looping around Trump... who is looping around Putin.

And I’ll leave the impeachment and SOTU analysis there for tonight.

Because I still have to talk about Iowa!

So, in chronological order, on February 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th, it was... Super Bowl, Iowa, SOTU, and Impeachment.

Ignoring the Super Bowl, which had no real impact on anything here, Iowa, back on the 3rd, is still not resolved tonight as I write.

The Iowa Democratic Party refused to release any election results at all, the night of the caucuses... citing bullshit technical problems.  The next day, they released 62% of the results.  Then today... released up to 81% of the results... which were found, by sharp eyed election officials to have glaring errors, which IDP then, grudgingly corrected... while still not giving us 100% of the results at the time of writing.

In a nutshell, the original excuse of technical problems with some app they were using doesn’t hold water two days later, because there should have been plenty of time by now to count the paper record by hand, and so it does look as though the IDP simply did not like the results on election night... and has been scrambling to finesse them, ever since.

Why did they not like the results?  Because, as I predicted, Joe Biden bit the dust, in this first primary election of the season, coming in a distant fourth place. But even worse... Bernie Sanders knocked it out of the park.

That, for the DNC, is not an acceptable outcome, and so, one would assume, they put pressure on IDP to hold off on announcing and, please double, triple, and quadruple check everything, until... they get something they can live with.

We saw the DNC do this in 2016, when Hillary was their darling, so... the only thing surprising here, is the level of desperation... over-reaching this far to suppress the results, this early on in the game.

The Faustian bargain the DNC (and IDP) are soo sloowly arriving at, is that Pete Buttigieg, who seems to have come in second in reality, should be presented to the world as having come in first... because if there’s no amount of finesse that can save Joe Biden from his pitiful numbers, then hand the centrist torch to  Buttigieg.  But no way in hell can Bernie Sanders get the political momentum he, and his voters earned out of this!

This does tend to expose how corrupt the DNC still is, and serve to remind us how we got Donald Trump in the first place... after they played this game in 2016, manufacturing consent for Hillary Clinton that did not exist on the ground.

But this time around, it’s not gonna play.  

It’s not gonna wash.

It’s not gonna work.

It won’t work because, Bernie has too much of a head of steam, and there is nobody else in the field that can stop him.  

Warren looked good until she revealed that she was not really for Medicare for all, but just some public option compromise bullshit.  She’s been failing ever since that reveal, and her lame attempt to cast Bernie as a sexist hurt her even worse.

Biden, as predicted earlier in this blog, just has no game, and is running out of money quick.  He’ll be gone before Super Tuesday in March.

Buttigieg blew his wad on Iowa and at the moment is simply a centrist place holder for Biden.  All of his support will go to Bloomberg, as soon as Bloomberg enters the race in March.

This will leave it between Bernie and Bloomberg through the spring... but Bloomberg has no legs.

How do I know that?  Well, as a billionaire trying to buy the election, he’s hemorrhaging millions out of pocket right now, just to stay relevant.  And, while being a billionaire,  he can afford to hemorrhage millions forever, without feeling the slightest bit faint, it’s a sign of failure that he has to go this route.

Where are his donors?  He doesn’t have any because he has no ground game at all.  All he has are ads.  This is just a publicity stunt at it’s heart.

Obama, famous for his relentless ground game, blew away this kind of media blitz, money-is-no-object, opposition both times out.  In his case they were being funded by SuperPacs, but it’s the same strategy of just pouring millions into ads without knocking on any doors.

Bernie Sanders has an even more relentless ground game than Obama ever had, without being funded by any corporate donors or super pacs... with more money than any of his rivals (other than Bloomberg) coming from the donations of regular wage workers.

He also has one magic card that even Trump can never possess... the 18 to 45 vote!

Trump won in 2016 by cobbling together a coalition of white schizophrenics, criminally insane white nationalists, Book of Revelation lunatics, and a freight train of garden variety conservative cowards, groomed by their elders to worship whoever seems to hold the scepter of authority no matter what they say or stand for.

That was a clever way to wring the last ounces of water there was left out of the damp cloth that is the white, conservative, male vote, in a post Obama universe.

But!..

Those hard won numbers in just the right districts, in just the right states... pale in comparison to the numbers available to he who can unlock the all-race, all-gender, 18 to 45 vote.

And Bernie has done that, this time around. 

There is opposition to him, among the centrist boomers, and even some GenX and so-called, X-ennials... fearing that his nomination is just what Trump wants, and will seal our doom.  

But even in the Primary season to come... that’s not gonna make a difference.  By the Convention, the DNC will have no other choice than to nominate Sanders.

That’s my prediction.

Okay... extra long entry for an extra crazy start to February.

*When you go back enough generations, everybody has some claim to a Mayflower passenger in their family tree... just as everybody can claim to be a descendant of Genghis Khan.  

It’s just a quirk of the fact that every generation you go back, you are covering exponentially more people.

Hey there so when i turn 18, im buying a 2003 nissan 350z with my own money. I now commute around 20,000 miles a year and the weather is really getting to me. I love riding but forced riding is different. Hello, I would really appreciate any one who can help me out with this, personally i am so disgusted with the government and the way the country is run that i don't know much about politics as i stay away from it for my own stress levels. Two months ago my nephew took his own life, as well as a variety of mental health problems (Which of course also go's uncared for in this country) other reasons he couldn't cope to live in society was that he couldn't get a job (200+ job application attempts) he discovered that to increase his chance of getting a job he would learn to drive so he can get to A to B. After going into approx. 90% of his life savings he managed to take driving lessons and even managed to pass his test. At this point he couldn't get insured because he discovered even if he was in a FULL TIME job he couldn't afford it. Yes he was male and was an adolescent. But he didn't want to drive to show off , have a nice car . Etc. he wanted a car to get to A to B to increase the chances of getting a job. I want to know who is in charge of car insurance etc. (department of transport??) so i can write to them and explain the situation which makes me sick to my stomach thinking about. Okay this is annoying me. My car insurance policy is up for renewal very soon. It is a 6-mo policy. I am currently 24 yrs old but turning 25 literally 7 days after my policy renews. As you might know, generally car insurance rates decrease when you turn 25, because 25 is the age threshold that is no longer considered to be a high risk age group. However, my car insurance company insists on rating my entire 6-mo policy as a 24-yr-old...which means that for literally 96.2% of my policy period, I will be 25 yrs old but paying the higher rates of a 24-yr-old. This does not make me feel happy or appreciated. >:( So I was wondering...what would you do? [Exclusive Interview] Danielle Harris on INOPERABLE, Directing, and the Current State of Horror

What makes someone great at what they do? As a scrawny, bow-legged, barely 6’3″ kid from the barren wasteland of Central Illinois who had a dream of playing college basketball, I can tell you that it is absolutely not natural-born talent. Sure, you have to have some natural abilities, but that’s not what makes someone great. What makes someone great is their willingness and desire to put in the work. To arrive early and stay late, to put in the extra miles when everyone else has gone home. It doesn’t matter what gifts you were born with if you are unwilling to put in the work. Danielle Harris, the very definition of a Scream Queen, has been doing that since 1988.

For the last 30 years, Danielle has been rolling up her sleeves and working harder than anyone else in her craft. She has starred in two of the greatest slasher franchises in horror history, but she has done much more than that. She has also amassed almost 100 acting credits to her name, or in other words, put in the work to get where she is today. Because of this work ethic and drive, there are very few people that mean more to the horror genre than Danielle Harris.

Many of us were first introduced to the genre through Danielle and her work. My cousin Chad (two years my junior, but forever my senior when it comes to horror knowledge) first introduced me to Danielle Harris and her work in Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers and Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers in the late 90’s. We damn near wore out those VHS tapes with all the re-watching we did. Little did I know that it would spark in me a love of the genre that has only grown with time. Therefore, I have Danielle Harris to thank for my love and passion for horror.

Danielle was gracious enough to take the time to chat with us about her new film, Inoperable, and about some of awesome things surrounding the horror genre right now.

Tyler Liston for Nightmare on Film Street: Inoperable has a pretty interesting premise going for it. It’s almost like Groundhog Day, only with ghosts. Two pretty awesome things on their own. What initially drew you to the project?

Danielle Harris: Well, I had not really done, like, a psychological thriller. So, the idea of just being trapped and having to do everything in one space was a bit difficult to map out in my mind. it would be a bit of a challenge, so that’s why I wanted to give it a shot.

NOFS: Yeah, it’s a little bit of a departure from the slasher genre.

DH: Yes! I am getting a little old to be running around in my underwear from masked men with knives, you know?

NOFS: I will say that I was worried about your ankles for most of the movie. You were running around a lot and those boots did not look comfortable at all.

DH: You know, I’m so petite that I can wear like 5 inch hooker stilettos and still haul ass. I’m so used to it that I actually picked out those boots, so no worries.

NOFS: Perfect! Running around so much really allowed the setting of the film to shine. It was actually really well done and pretty creepy. Where was Inoperable filmed?

DH: Oh, that was a real place. They really didn’t do much in regards to the art department or anything like that. It was an abandoned, dilapidated old hospital in Tampa, Florida, that had asbestos and mold and had all kinds of fun stuff in there. They dressed it to look, actually, nicer in certain areas than it actually was.

You know, sets are always a character in these movies. If it doesn’t work then the movie is pretty lame, so i thought the location was really nice.

NOFS: Well, I mean…

DH: Not nice, necessarily, but it works for the movie.

NOFS: Yeah, I wouldn’t want to hang out there or anything.

DH: No, not at all.

NOFS: Besides the setting, I enjoyed the way the film played your character’s perception of reality. This seems to be a trend in horror these days. Films like A Cure for Wellness, the new film Unsane and even Get Out deal with misinformation and makes the viewer question the nature of truth. Why do you think that is?

DH: I think that the surprise ending has always been as important as the great opening sequence. Look, it’s very hard to find an ending that the audience doesn’t see coming. Everyone kind of tries to have that, you know? Everyone wants a cliffhanger. In non-genre movies the ending needs to wrap up story and in horror movies it needs to unravel the story. I think we did a pretty good job. We shot this film in order so by the time we get to the ending i think we were all losing our minds so it was nice.

NOFS: Moving off topic a little bit, you had a son this past year, correct? My girlfriend and I recently had a child ourselves and it is by far the most terrifying thing that has ever happened to me. I wasn’t even involved with the actual birth part and it is still killing me. How has being a Mom affected your work and even how much you’re able to enjoy horror and conventions?

DH: Well it has definitely affected my willingness to go away and shoot, because there’s another little person that depends on you. I definitely pick and choose what I want to do more than before. It really has to be something good. Before, I would take something because you’re like “Well, I’m not doing anything else right now and it could be kind of fun because so-and-so is working on it. Yeah I can go shoot in butt-fuck wherever for a month and nobody will miss me while I’m gone and it’s totally fine I’ll just disappear and go make a movie”.

Now, you have to say, “Wait, where are we shooting? It shoots locally? Great! How many hours am I going to be there? So, it definitely makes a difference in the kind of roles that I take. I need to be present and my kid comes first, always. I wouldn’t do a movie if it ever interfered with anything important, like a birthday, and that’s always going to be the way it is. He will always come with me, too, even now he travels with me. I did a horror convention in October in Nashville and he was there. I wanted to do a little vacation with my Mom and my Husband because I love Nashville, and I brought him on stage with me when I had my Q & A. Now, this is a horrible analogy, but it’s like when someone brings a dog to work and all of a sudden everyone cheers up and you get out of your work funk. It’s like that when my kid is with me. It’s like everything is better.

NOFS: Well, speaking as a generally anxious man, I’m still terrified.

DH: Just know that none of us know what we are doing. You’ll figure it out.

NOFS: Thank you. I hope as Hell hope so… Getting back on track here, the Horror genre has blown up this past year, both at the box office and with freaking Oscar nominations (which is still crazy to me). Where do you see the future of the genre going? What do you hope to see moving forward?

DH: I think it just goes to show you the unpredictability of it all. Like, who knows what’s going to happen? Finally we’re getting some recognition, which I know we’ve been wanting for a long time, but it needed to be something that fits the times we live in… but, the times keep changing, so I don’t really know where we’re going to end up. I think there’s some really big, awesome changes about to come and we can only go up from here. So, I’m excited to see what happens with horror films.

On the flip-side, it’s also a very scary time because anyone can be famous right now. I mean, I’m specifically losing out on parts that I want to do to other people that are not actors or actresses. They are YouTube stars or they are “influencers”. I haven’t seen a lot of those movies come out yet in our genre, but these films are very difficult to make. It’s very difficult to act in these movies. Not just anyone can do it.

I’m curious to see if maybe at some point those famous people will go back to doing what they know how to do and leave the acting to the actors.

NOFS: Maybe leave it to the actual actors with 30 years of experience?

DH: Or maybe some of them are really good and they may have a new career. You know, back in the day you had to pay your dues. You had to go to school and you had to understand the business. I don’t think it’s that way anymore. When you’re losing out on parts to people that have more YouTube followers even though you have 30 years of experience and 100 movies under your belt, it can be a bit disheartening.

NOFS: My Grandpa always told me that “Cream rises to the top”, so let’s hope that happens quickly with this new crop of stars.

DH: It’s interesting. I always tell these producers that I know you think these are the people that are going to download or go to the theater to see these films but they’re not. These are kids that are going to pirate the shit out of your movie! These are not fans that are our age that are going to go buy a ticket or buy your DVD. So you think that 2 million people are going to go buy movie, but they’re not. They are going to steal that shit online, so good luck to you.

NOFS: They don’t have a lot of disposable income.

DH: No, they don’t… Because they’re twelve.

NOFS: So, what is next for you, Danielle?

DH: Well, I just finished a movie called Camp Cold Brook, which is a Joe Dante film that I am super stoked about that Andy Palmer directed. With Chad Michael Murray and myself…

NOFS: He’s a Certified Dreamboat.

DH: You know, it’s funny because he remembered meeting me like 20 years ago out at a club somewhere. He looks like all the guys that i dated at that time. Blonde, spiky hair actor kids like Shane West and those guys so I think I remember meeting him but it has been so long. He’s wonderful and we had great report on set and the movie is really good and fun. It’s a ghost story again only this time set in an old camp. We shot it in Oklahoma City in the middle of nowhere and it’s very throwback-80’s. Joe Dante is very proud of it so I’m pretty excited about it.

NOFS: Do you have any interest in directing again?

DH: Yes. There’s a particular story that I’ve been wanting to do for so long. I pitched it recently to quite a few different people and everybody frothed at the mouth wanting to do it it’s now just a matter of me finding the right group that I want to work with. Directing is a two-year obligation so with a kid you want to make sure that you get in bed with the right people. So, I’m just trying to put my team together and I hope that within the next year I will make it happen. If it doesn’t happen within the next year, it’s OK because I know that at some point in my career I will make this movie.

NOFS: Among Friends was something. I enjoyed it but I definitely want to see you get behind the camera again.

DH: Thank you. Now I would like to make a real movie! That movie was so quick and we had no time to do anything and I was brought on like two days before which is crazy. I definitely want this next one to be mine.

NOFS: Lastly, Danielle, I just wanted to ask you about the horror community in general. I’ve always been a fan but I have only recently joined the community as a writer and active participant. What does the horror community mean to you?

DH: Well, without them I wouldn’t have a career, that’s for sure. It’s like we’re the outcasts that find solace in one another. It’s a bond that’s unbreakable and its something that we all have in common. It’s kind of crazy, this phenomenon. You don’t see conventions for Terms of Endearment, you know? You really don’t. This fan-demonium is just in some genres. Horror, Sci-Fi and Fantasy. That’s it. It’s a way to escape and they’re forever dedicated and devoted and they may love horror, but let me tell you that there is not one horror fan of mine that hasn’t seen everything that I’ve done. Even outside of the horror industry. So once they love you, they love you forever and it’s pretty awesome.

As you probably noticed, the words “Halloween” and “New Sequel” never came up during our conversation. This was intentional on my part. We have all read the interviews where Danielle has expressed her disappointment in the direction the new sequel is taking. Specifically how it is erasing all of the sequels that have already taken place and how they are replacing Jamie Lloyd as Laurie’s daughter. I speak for all horror fans when I say that nothing anyone does moving forward with the Halloween franchise could ever negate how important she is to the series and to us fans. She is in four films in the franchise, for God’s sake! We love the work that she did in 4, 5, and in the Zombie films, and no timeline jump or reboot will ever take that away from her.
