some baby managers in san sebastián, 1995 - iraola, arteta, alonso in antiguoko. visuals for my fic (notes below)
why’d i make these three specifically a friend group? besides the fact that canonically they’re friends also they’re the ones who I already know. i had to make a better visualization of them as 13-year olds because the photos out there on the internet are mostly frustratingly grainy. here are the references:
Mikel Arteta
Tumblr media Tumblr media
i gave him the nickname “txiki” (basque for “small”) because it sounds cute and like the english word “cheeky.” he’d come off as a happy, talented, popular boy. but i think he was very hard on himself at this age, an insufferable perfectionist who would want to kill himself if he’d lose a tennis match, who had a short temper and could be antisocial, who considered himself already too old for his age. (thank u @henry-tasman for sharing your arteta expertise with me.)
Xabi Alonso
Tumblr media
a legend in the making what more is there to say!
Xabi + Mikel
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
you all know these pics already!! the adorable kids that they were
Andoni Iraola
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Supposedly these are pictures of Andoni.
Tumblr media
that’s definitely Andoni. I love the frog pose Mikel is in, he’s too cute.
Bonus!?
Tumblr media
idk who these boys are but could we pretend the one on the right is mikel? i love their poses, the scenery of san sebastián, the vintage photo quality, it’s a photo i can feel.
i got most of these pics from here!

10 Teams to Watch in 2024
For the past several years, I’ve made it a goal to watch at least one game from every team in Europe’s top five leagues (though last year, I missed by two Ligue 1 squads). I’m off to a good start this season, ending 2023 having seen every Premier League team at least once, and over half of the teams in each of the other four leagues. But aiming for range means sacrificing depth, and with the new…

hello from the uk! i'm curious, is football very popular in basque country? i ask because of the twenty football clubs in the english premier league, three have basque managers (unai emery at aston villa, mikel arteta at arsenal and andoni iraola at bournemouth)
Kaixo anon!
And please! Football is almost a religion here in Hegoalde.
Some fun facts:
the top scorer in La Liga recieves trophy Pichichi. Rafael Moreno Aranzadi "Pichichi" was a Basque player for Athletic Club in the 1910s-20s.
the first ever football match of La Liga back in 1929 was a Basque derby: Athletic Club VS Real Sociedad
Euskadi is the only autonomous community to have a team from every region playing in the top level league: Bizkaia has Athletic Club, Gipuzkoa has Real Sociedad, Araba has Deportivo Alavés. Nafarroa also has Osasuna. We used to have up to 5 teams playing, but sadly Eibar was relegated to La Liga Hypermotion (2nd category).
Basque team Athletic Club is among the only 3 teams - with Real Madrid and Barça - that are still unrelegated. The achievement is bigger because Athletic Club plays with locals only.
out of the 24 players of the NT chosen for the qualifications for the 2024 Eurocup, 8 are Basque. That's 33% of the team, when Euskadi and Nafarroa mean just 6% of the population in the Spanish state. Not bad!

Listened to a podcast/interview with Andoni. Lovely Beloved Basque all around. Apparently, he loves bookshops, and thought about owning a bookshop.
Booshop!AU with him and Unai when? Unai can appreciate the physical form of books. Maybe Unai comes to Andoni's shop to admire some lovely books, and spends too much time touching and fondling them (maybe it's during (post)lockdown-ish period and people are more alert to touching stuff) - Andoni doesn't like having a potential customer just touching all the books and not really buying them, especially in this economy!

Howling at these edits on Spanish sports twitter about our Basque Kings.
What is going on behind Mikel there?
Unai looking like he’s about to shoot someone for poaching grouse on his country estate.
Andoni seems to have been clipped from the poster of a budget Hallmark Christmas romance.

Okay the mystery of Andoni's tapes has been uncovered:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Surprise surprise, it's a superstitious thing! (or, as he calls it, "stupidity") @total-toral
Cherries’ head coach can be seen wearing tape on his right index finger and his left middle finger on the sidelines, a superstition he has carried on since his playing days. Having started the tradition in the youth ranks of Athletic Club, the Basque has continued to tape each finger prior to a match throughout his career, including pre-season fixtures. Asked about the tape, Iraola told the Daily Echo: “It's a stupidity. It's just superstitions. Sometimes as a player, the referees asked you to take it off. I take it off, nothing happened. But I have done it for so many years that I continue doing it. I think every single game, even pre-season, I like to do it. It's something, the first thing I do when I get into the locker room is just tape it, and I'm used to doing it. But it's not important.”

@protect-daniel-james Some reading to accompany your Basque cake! ♥️
When Iraola was informed of his manager-of-the-season nomination, he reacted in his office by pressing Unai Emery’s case, and he does likewise here. 🥲
Love all the cycling talk too. I want to be a fly on the wall to him & Unai chatting about cycling (in English please, lads, ta).
