Angelus reaches new chronometry achievement with U51 Diver Tourbillon 5-day power reserve 

Angelus U51 Diver Tourbillon

Angelus keeps with its tradition of utilizing technologically forward materials to manufacture highly complicated and aesthetically interesting timepieces. The House stretches the limit of its famous diving tourbillon movement, adding a 5-day power reserve to its list of features. 

While meeting the required diver’s watch criteria, the U51 Diver Tourbillon comes with high technical features. In fact, the A-310 calibre is dedicated to efficiency, with a silicon lever escapement and with all bridges as plates made of titanium. Furthermore, Angelus’ engineers and watchmakers pushed the boundaries with a remarkable 5-day power reserve while keeping the 28,800 vibrations per hour (4 Hz) frequency, ensuring a high precision. Finally, the tourbillon cage is set on a ball bearing instead of pivots to gain in stability. 

Even though the U51 Diver Tourbillon is intended as a high-performance sporty timepiece, the skeletonised movement has been carefully decorated with sandblasted finishing, enhancing the natural colour variations of the titanium.

The 45 mm titanium case features two large screw-down crowns. The two-position crown at 4 o’clock is used for winding and setting the time, while the crown at 2 o’clock is used to rotate the unidirectional 60-minute rotating bezel. Opposite, at the 9 o’clock position, a helium escape valve is placed to ensure the watch’s water resistance of 300 meters (1,000 feet), even during saturation diving so the helium molecules could not make their way into the case under pressure. 

 Careful attention has been given to the aesthetic of the U51 Diver Tourbillon. The 45 mm case is masterfully manufactured with a subtle interplay between sandblasted, brushed and polished surfaces, which takes full advantage of the titanium’s unique colours properties. The bezel of the case as the chapter ring are carved, recalling waves. The open display appeals with a contrasting chapter ring of stormy blue and striking orange colours. The hands, indexes and Arabic numerals are all filled with Super-Luminova for optimal readability.  

 The U51 Diver Tourbillon comes on a matching blue rubber strap embossed with an Angelus logo and a titanium folding buckle.

After entering the scene as a diver’s watch like no other, the Angelus U50 Diver Tourbillon returns in a bold black limited edition. 

The U50 Diver Tourbillon Black Edition stands out with its uniquely structured manufacture skeleton movement and dark tones. While conceived with all the properties sought in a diver’s watch, the U50 Diver Tourbillon is high-performance timepiece. With its stealthy black silhouette, this limited edition blends into any situation. 

Crafted in a 46mm-wide lightweight yet robust titanium case with a black DLC treatment all over, the U50 Diver Tourbillon features two large screw-down crowns. The two-position crown at 4 o’clock is used for winding and setting the time, while the crown at 2 o’clock is used to rotate the unidirectional 60-minute rotating bezel. Opposite, at the 9 o’clock position, a helium escape valve is placed to ensure the watch’s water resistance of 300 meters (1,000 feet), even during saturation diving so the helium molecules could not make their way into the case under pressure.

 Instead of a solid dial, the U50 Diver Tourbillon features an open face with a dark but legible hours’ ring in grey, as well as white Super-Luminova on the indexes. Matching the dial, the hours, minutes and seconds’ hands are black plated and filled with Super-Luminova. Both face and case back crystals are made of antireflective sapphire. 

 The result of years of intensive R&D by Angelus’ engineers and watchmakers, the U50 Diver Tourbillon’s A-300 mechanical hand-wound caliber is designed as a skeleton from the ground up rather than simply being a cut-out version of an existing movement.  

Angelus U50 Black edition

Much reduced in weight, it has maximum rigidity from its beam-type bridges and the fact that all the movement’s main elements, such as the wheels and barrel, are firmly secured between two plates. This design replaces the conventional main plate and bridges construction and massively increases the mechanical resistance of the movement. The watch’s rigidity is further enhanced by the Angelus in-house six-spoke design, which reinforces the wheel train and protects the skeletonized ratchet and barrel. Finally, the movement is entirely manufactured in-house. 

With its core functions – hours, minutes, small seconds – the A-300 caliber has a 55-hour power reserve. The 4 Hz / 28,800 vph frequency is a guarantee for precision. Even though the caliber is intended as a high-performance, it has painstakingly executed with snailed black DLC coating and chamfered edges, matching the blacked-out allure of the U50 Diver Tourbillon Black Edition.  

 The U50 Diver Tourbillon Black Edition comes on a black rubber strap bearing the Angelus logo, with a Bback DLC titanium pin buckle, completing the look of this 25-piece limited edition diver’s watch.

Angelus Announces its First Dive Watch

https://wp.me/p9IwKp-x7 With Baselworld 2018 right around the corner, there are plenty of new watches to discuss. One that has already caught our eye is the Angelus U50 Diver Tourbillon, which has the distinction of being the brand’s first-ever dive watch.

The Angelus U50 Diver Tourbillon

This isn’t the first time a tourbillon has been included in a dive watch — both Richard Mille and MB&F have done it before — but it’s still a rare look and speaks to the sort of high-concept horology that Angelus has strived for since it was brought back to life by Manufacture La Joux-Perret (now owned by Citizen) in 2011.

The 45 mm watch is made of titanium and has two screw-down crowns; the one at 4 o’clock controls the time and the one at 2 o’clock controls the interior uni-directional rotating bezel. Opposite the crowns is a helium escape valve allowing the watch to reach saturation-diving depths of up to 300 m. The skeletonized dial has a polychromatic aesthetic. Blue and yellow lacquer dominate the interior bezel, hands, and seconds subdial. The indices and the middle of the hands feature white SuperLuminova. The Angelus team spent four years of R&D building the A-300 Caliber specifically as a skeleton instead of opting for a  cut-out version of an existing movement. This allowed a greater reduction in total weight which, aided by the titanium case, helps make the watch quite lightweight overall while still appearing substantial on the wrist. Having the wheels and barrel securely fastened between two plates and the use of beam-type bridges has aided in the movement’s overall rigidity. Maximizing the total mechanical resistance of the movement was a major focus for Angelus here. It’s further strengthened by the Angelus in-house six-spoke design, which reinforces the wheel train and protects the skeletonized ratchet and barrel. However, the big surprise here is the exact size of the movement. With most dive watches — and tourbillon watches, for that matter — you expect a robust caliber. For the A-300, Angelus was able to keep the movement to a thickness of only 4.3 mm total. It also features detailed finishing such as snailed black ADLC coating and chamfered edges. As the brand’s first attempt at a dive watch, it’s impressive how Angelus didn’t follow a typical nautical look and instead engineered and produced a watch that is distinctly a product of their design ethos. Four years of development is a lot of time to invest but, in the end, this watch has a lot going for it and I’m excited to see it in the metal at Baselworld next week. Dive watches – for us non-divers – are a funny proposition.  I mean, do we really need all the engineering that goes in to making a watch that’s ready to time dives in the depths that require a 300m (or more) WR rating?  Well, no, we certainly don’t.  But we like how they look, and all that they represent.  Which is why something like the Angelus U50 Diver Tourbillon – while being a perfectly ridiculous proposition – is such a fun one.

  Why ridiculous?  Well, if none of us really have a need for something that is ostensibly diving-oriented, like a helium escape valve, where does a tourbillon fit in?  Of course, the Angelus U50 Diver Tourbillon features one prominently, and it’s a lovely movement for it.  However, if the tourbillon is more an engineering exercise than one in accuracy (I’ve not seen anything that conclusively says it helps counter the effects of gravity), then it really is a design in excess for a dive watch.

And you know what?  It’s an excess that I would be totally willing to consume.  As I’ve mentioned time and again, I’m not a diver, not in any sense of the word.  I like dive watches for the implied ruggedness and the styling.  And, you have to admit, the Angelus U50 Diver Tourbillon has style in spades. And as far as dive watches go, I’d say the 300m WR rating, along with the interior rotating bezel, makes for a dive watch.

If you’re looking to lounge poolside (or, more likely, on the super yacht deck) with the Angelus U50 Diver Tourbillon on your wrist, you’ll need to bring along just about $32,995 to call one of these titanium, tourbillon-equipped beauties your own.  For the rest of us, well, we can admire it from afar.  angelus-watches.com
