Apple got rich in China. Other Asian markets offer the next ‘golden opportunity
Tumblr media
Hong KongCNN —
Apple launched an online store in Vietnam this week, in another nod to the rising importance of emerging shops for the iPhone maker.
The opening on Thursday, which followed the high-profile launch of its first real shops in India, means trades in the fast-growing Southeast Asian low-cost will be able to buy any Apple product directly for the first time.
Markets like Vietnam, India and Indonesia are becoming more significant for Apple as its growth in developed markets, including China, slows down, prompting the company to focus on places where it’s usually been less active.
For decades, China was central to Apple’s extraordinary climb to become the most valuable company on Earth, portion as a backbone for both its invention and feeding. While the country remains key to Apple’s operations, the tech giant is now hedging its bets.
Vachira Vachira/NurPhoto/Getty Images
Apple (AAPL) CEO Tim Cook has pointed to the company’s prospects in emerging economies, calling them bright spots in the company’s financial results. On an earnings call this month, Cook said he was “particularly pleased” with the performance in these markets during the first three months of the year.
Apple “achieved all-time records in Mexico, Indonesia, the Philippines, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and the UAE, as well as a number of March quarter records, including in Brazil, Malaysia and India,” he told analysts.
That came as the California-based giant also reported its second straight drop in overall quarterly revenue, prompting concerns about a broader slowdown in demand amid economic uncertainty.
“Clearly, growth has slowed globally and thus put more pressure [on Apple] to aggressively go after emerging markets,” said Daniel Ives, managing director of Wedbush Securities.
A ‘mega-market’
Ives predicts that “over the coming years, Indonesia, Malaysia and India will comprise a bigger piece of the pie for Apple, given its efforts in these countries.”
The start of online sales in a country usually precedes the launch of brick-and-mortar stores for Apple, he told CNN. This was true of India, for instance, which got its first physical outlets last month and a pledge from Cook to further invest in the country.
Thursday’s launch showed how Apple was “further cementing” its presence in emerging markets, according to Chiew Le Xuan, a research analyst who covers smartphones in Southeast Asia for Canalys.
He said the tech giant had been “actively increasing” its presence in the region in recent months, ramping up its distribution and network of authorized resellers, especially in Malaysia.
Apple has ample room to run in these markets.
Currently, the company only operates its own stores in more developed regional economies, such as Thailand and Singapore, according to Canalys.
Even Indonesia, a vast archipelago that is the world’s sixth-biggest smartphone market, doesn’t have a physicalApple store yet, said Chiew. Apple’s market share there is tiny, at just 1% in 2022, according to Canalys data.
“We’re putting efforts in a number of these markets and really see, particularly given our low share and the dynamics of the demographics … a great opportunity for us,” Cooksaid during Apple’s results call.
Apple joins a growing list of global businesses that have become bullish on Southeast Asia, where more investment is being poured into manufacturing.
The region’s consumer base also holds promise, with the number of middle-income and affluent households in economies such as Vietnam, Indonesia, and the Philippines projected to grow by around 5% annually through 2030, according to the Boston Consulting Group.
The consultancy has called this group of consumers “the next mega-market.”
The allure of Southeast Asia’s rising middle class “has changed the dynamic in these countries, which previously Apple stayed away from,” according to Ives.
“This is a golden opportunity for Apple,” he said.
Challenges remain
For years, premium brands like Apple have have struggled to compete in emerging markets because of the price of their products, choosing instead to rely on local resellers.
iPhones, which cost between $470 and $1,100, are expensive for consumers in less developed Southeast Asian economies, where the bulk of smartphone shipments are priced under $200, according to Chiew.
He said Apple’s absence from places like Cambodia or Vietnam was typically more apparent around the launch of a new iPhone, as buyers from those countries often flew to Singapore or Malaysia to purchase devices and take them back for resale.
A view of an Apple store at Marina Bay Sands in Singapore in 2020. Buyers from other Southeast Asian countries without their own Apple stores typically line up outside such outlets to buy devices for resale, according to an analyst.
Edgar Su/Reuters
This could change in the coming years, particularly as Apple continues to increase its firepower in the region.
Ives predicted that Apple could “further expand its ecosystem and tentacles to emerging markets using itsChina playbook,” meaning it could try to hook customers through “various pricing strategies and building out from there.”
Once those users have converted to Apple’s operating system, iOS, they tend to stick around and become loyal customers, he added.
This has “been the core part of its success in China that now can be replicated in India, Indonesia, and Vietnam, among others,” said Ives.
But Apple may face hurdles in Southeast Asia, where several countries have placed stringent requirements on foreign businesses, according to Chiew.
For example, at least 35% of the components of electronic goods sold in Indonesia must made locally, a threshold Apple has had to meet by working with partners, he added.Similar rules prevented Apple from setting up shop in India for years until the relaxation of regulations in 2019. And while consumers are becoming more affluent, the company’s price points are still considered high in many emerging markets, noted Ives. “Growth will be choppy we believe.”

Apple will manufacture iPhone 14 in India
NEW DELHI —  Apple will make its iPhone 14 in India, the company said Monday, as manufacturers shift production from China amid geopolitical tensions and pandemic restrictions that have disrupted supply chains for many industries. “The new iPhone 14 lineup introduces groundbreaking new technologies and important safety capabilities. We’re excited to be manufacturing iPhone 14 in India,” Apple said in a statement. Apple unveiled its latest lineup of iPhones earlier this month. They will have improved cameras, faster processors and longer-lasting batteries at the same prices as last year’s models. India is the world’s second-largest smartphone market after China but Apple iPhone sales have struggled to capture a large share of the market against cheaper smartphones from competitors. The announcement from the Cupertino, Calif.-based company dovetails with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s push for local manufacturing, which has been a key goal for his government ever since he took office in 2014. The tech company has bet big on India, where it first began manufacturing its iPhone SE in 2017 and has since continued to assemble a number of iPhone models there. Apple opened its online store for India two years ago, but the pandemic has delayed plans for a flagship store in India, according to local media reports. The latest model will be shipped out by Foxconn, a major iPhone assembler, whose facilities are on the outskirts of Chennai, a city in southern India. Apple is likely to shift about 5% of its iPhone 14 production to India later this year, raising it to 25% by 2025, according to a JP Morgan report quoted by the Press Trust of India news agency. The analysts expect nearly a quarter of all Apple products to be manufactured outside China by 2025, compared with about 5% now. Supply chain risks such as the stringent COVID-19 lockdowns seen in China probably are the trigger for such relocation efforts that will continue over the next two or three years, the report said. “Apple has been trying to diversify its supply chain for a while, but these efforts have grown in the last two years over trade sanctions between the U.S. and China,” said Sanyam Chaurasia, an analyst at Canalys. Last year, the tech giant manufactured about 7 million iPhones in India. This news is likely to significantly increase India-made Apple smartphones, he added. He said the plan to make more iPhones in India may also lead Apple to drop its prices for the Indian market, making it more competitive. “You can adopt a more aggressive pricing strategy if you manufacture locally,” Chaurasia said. Most of Apples smartphones and tablets are assembled by contractors with factories in China, but the company started asking them in 2020 to look at the possibility of moving some production to Southeast Asia or other places after repeated shutdowns to fight COVID-19 disrupted its global flow of products. Apple hasn’t released details, but news reports say the company planned to set up assembly of tablet computers and wireless earphones in Vietnam. Other companies are keeping or expanding manufacturing in China to serve the domestic market while shifting export-oriented work to other countries due to rising wages and other costs, as well as the difficulty for foreign executives to visit China due to anti-COVID-19 travel restrictions. AP writer Joe McDonald contributed to this report. Read the full article

Tablet Application Processor Market Analysis By Growth, Emerging Trends , Future Opportunities and Forecast to 2025
The tablet application processor market is expected to reach a CAGR of 5% during the forecast period from 2020 to 2025. The trend in automation has developed the need for intelligent and smart ways of transferring and storing the data, especially in the industrial sector. Industrial tablets are growing in popularity in the manufacturing sector. The manufacturing vertical chooses to deploy industrial tablets due to their reliability and durability. The tablets are integrated with serial ports, authentication, RFID, and card readers, which enable communication with any industrial third-party device. A player such as Intel is transferring the advantages of Moore’s Law and its leading transistor technology for higher performance and more energy-efficient processors to other computing segments in tablet, thereby further helping in driving the growth of the market. - High adoption of octa-core application processors drives the market. The processor refers to an integrated circuit that implements eight independent physical execution units (core) on a single die. Its two sets of quad-core processors split various tasks between them according to type. Most of the time, the low-powered set of cores is functioned when advanced tasks are needed; however, the faster set of four cores kicks to provide the advantage over quad-core in the tablet. - All modern octa-core chips are based on ARM’s big.LITTLE architecture. A number of major chip manufacturers have based their efforts on this big.LITTLE, or octa-core, blueprint such as Samsung (Tab S 8.4, Tab S 10.5, Note 10.1), Sony (Z4 Tablet), Cube Talk 9X, etc., which drives the market. - Increasing the adoption of navigation applications in automotive drives the market. The adoption of rugged tablets is increasing for the GPS navigation application. The tablet having the nest GPS receiver chipset proves the highest resolution location in the fastest time to Android and window OS resolving the location of the tablet to the most accurate position. A product such as Panasonic Toughpad FZ-M1 rugged tablet (Intel Core m5-6Y57 vPro), Getac F110 rugged tablet (Intel Core i7-6600U 2.6GHz), Samsung Galaxy Tab Active 2 rugged tablet (Octa-core 1.6 GHz Cortex-A53) is one of the prominent products which are highly used for the navigation applications. Hence with the increasing demand for transportation and the automobile segment, the demand for rugged tablets assists in driving the market. - However, due to the impact of COVID-19, the market suffers from the current growth. Investment banking company such as Raymond James reduced its estimates for semiconductors used in mobile handsets and tablets based on an estimated 17 to 20% drop in the sale in China and a drop in the sale of Apple Inc. products of approx 12 to 16% during the second quarter of 2020 while digital transformation is keeping demand for tablet solutions growing in industry and enterprises, while the weak consumer performance remains the primary reason for the contraction in the market.
Click Here to Download Sample Report >> https://www.sdki.jp/sample-request-85974 - From a consumer demand standpoint, there are a different set of challenges, but they mostly fall on one vendor. Having been backed into the Chinese market due to US trade restrictions, Huawei’s tablet business is now in a very difficult position in early 2020 due to the barriers to movement in China (e.g., transportation restrictions, temperature checkpoints before entering buildings) and the impact of the distribution of processors and voluntary caution of people staying home. Overall the COVID-19 impact is restraining the growth of the market. - While in India, the government has stopped all electronics manufacturing, shut down retail stores and stopped the sale of electronics online as well, India Cellular and Electronics Association (ICEA) and the Manufacturers Association of India (MAIT) have written to the government to allow the sale of tablets, smartphones other products online during the lockdowns, but no decision has been taken yet. Key Market Trends Apple iOS to Witness Significant Growth Rate - Apple Inc. designed System on Chip (SoC) and System in Package (SiP) processors for their tablet business. The combination of a low-power central processing unit (CPU) and other components into a physically compact package meet the stringent power and space constraints common to mobile devices. - According to Apple, they extended their tablet Application Processor market share leadership with 42 percent revenue share in Q2 2019, followed by Intel with 19 percent and Qualcomm with 17 percent. Their Apple A4 is a PoP SoC manufactured by Samsung. It combines ARM Cortex-A8 CPU with a PowerVR GPU and emphasizes power efficiency. - Their chip commercially debuted with the release of Apple's iPad tablet. Their most recent iPad models are the seventh-generation iPad, released on September 25, 2019. This caters to the demand and growth of the tablet application processors market in the iOS operating system. - Further, the new iPad contained a new dual-core A5X processor with quad-core graphics, and a Retina Display with a resolution of 2,048 by 1,536 pixels, more than 50 percent more pixels than a standard 1,920 by 1,080 high definition TV screen. Apple prioritizes to doubled the size of the A5X's memory interfaces in comparison to the A5, including a memory interface subsystem with four 32-bit wide LP-DDR2 memory controllers, which was done to provide sufficient bandwidth for the very high pixel count on the third-generation iPad's Retina Display. - Furthermore, in October 2019, the company releases Apple's Sidecar, which is a MacOS 10.15 Catalina feature that enables one to turn an iPad into a second display, working alongside the Mac. The feature also allows iPad Pro owners to use their tablet as an input device with an Apple Pencil. Sidecar needs iPads that support Apple Pencil. The iPad will also need to be running iPadOS. - Further, Apple's Sidecar feature needs Macs that run with Skylake processors (Intel). The list of compatible iPads with the support of Sidecar are 12.9-inch iPad Pro, 11-inch iPad Pro, 10.5-inch iPad Pro, 9.7-inch iPad Pro, iPad (6th generation or later), iPad mini (5th generation or later), iPad Air (3rd generation). - Also, Apple's A12Z Bionic is a System on a Chip (SoC) that will be found in the iPad Pro 11 in the year 2020. It offers eight cores divided into four performance cores and four power-efficiency cores (up from the six cores in the A12 of the iPhone XS). It has enhanced thermal design means higher peak and longer sustained performance with the additional GPU core. Further, with the more new launch of the iPad tablet, the market in the iOS segment penetrates to increase in the future. North America Accounts for Significant Market Share - North America accounts for a significant share, and due to various global players residing in this region, the market significantly grows to compare to other regions. Further, with decreasing the average price of consumer tablets in the United States, the rate of demand for the tablet is increasing; thereby, the need for tablet application processor increases. The two brands that dominate the market share are Samsung and Apple. - Further, players are focused on launching their new tablet with previous version expansions or new versions. In April 2019, Samsung launched the Galaxy Tab A 10.1 and the Galaxy Tab S5e in the United States with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 670 CPU for Galaxy Tab S5e and for Galaxy Tab A 10.1 Samsung-made Exynos 7904 CPU replaced with the Snapdragon equivalent in the United States. - The Snapdragon 670 has up to 15% better CPU performance than its predecessor, the Snapdragon 660, and up to double the AI performance. The Snapdragon 670 integrates the Kryo 360 CPU, an octa-core processor that has two performance cores and six power-saving cores, which can clock up to 2 GHz and 1.7 GHz. - Further, North America is one of the leading regions of the global transportation & logistics industry. Moreover, the growing investments in the energy sector are also expected to drive the North American market. The energy industry, which is the third-largest industry in the United States, is attracting a large number of investments. For instance, according to the Bloomberg New Energy Finance (BNEF), the United States is expected to invest nearly USD 700 million over the next 20 years in order to drive renewable energy capacity, further helps to grow the market for the tablet in the industrial sector. - Further, the e-retailer giant, Amazon launched the latest Fire HD 10 Tablet in October 2019 with Kindle Kids Edition e-reader and Fire HD 10 Kids Edition tablet as well. The devices are now listed for pre-orders in the United States. The tablet is based on a 2GHz octa-core processor with 32GB of inbuilt storage. The Kindle Kids Edition is a 6-inch ebook reader with a 167ppi e-ink display with adjustable screen light. - Also, according to Association of American Publishers, Children’s and YA category, reached USD 918.8 million in 2019, increasing revenues by 7.4% compared to 2018, and the religious press revenue grew a significant 11.4% to reach USD 328.2 million in the first half of 2019 from USD 294.6 million in the first half of 2018 in the ebook category. Moreover, increasing demand for digitalized comic books is projected to drive the market in the region, and therefore comic book publishers such as DC Entertainment and MARVEL are expanding their portfolio to follow the trend of ebook tablets.
Competitive Landscape The tablet application processor market is tending to move from consolidated to fragmented but with a slow rate, and the players are coming with new processor technology increasing the rivalry in the market. Key players are Qualcomm Technologies, Inc, MediaTek Inc., etc. Recent developments in the market are - - April 2019 - Samsung introduced its new flagship tablet Galaxy TabS6 aimed at consumers that need advanced functionality and performance. The Galaxy Tab S6 is based on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 855 SoC, which features four high-performance cores, four low-power cores, and Adreno 640 integrated GPU. The application processor is accompanied by 6 or 8 GB of LPDDR4/LPDDR4X memory as well as 128 or 256 GB of NAND flash storage (expandable using a microSDXC card). Foxconn iPhone India output drops 50% as workers contract Covid-19
Tumblr media
Production of the Apple iPhone 12 at a Foxconn factory in India has slumped by more than 50% because workers infected with COVID-19 have had to leave their posts, two sources told Reuters.
The Foxconn facility in the southern state of Tamil Nadu produces iPhones specifically for India, the world's No.2 smartphone market.
Tamil Nadu is one of the worst hit states in the second coronavirus wave engulfing India. Officials imposed a full lockdown in the state from Monday, closing public transport and shuttering shops, to try slow surging infections.
More than 100 Foxconn employees in the state have tested positive for COVID-19 and the company has enforced a no-entry ban at its factory in the capital of Chennai until late May, one of the sources said.
"Employees are only allowed to leave but not to enter the facility since yesterday," the person said. "Only a small part of output is being kept."
More than 50% of the plant's capacity had been cut, both sources said, declining to be named as they were not authorised to speak to the media.
They did not specify the plant's capacity and it was unclear how many workers were at the facility, which provides dormitory accommodation for employees.
Taipei-based Foxconn, the world's largest contract electronics maker and a major supplier to Apple, said a small number of employees at one of its facilities in India tested positive for COVID-19 and the company was providing them with support, including medical assistance.
"Foxconn places the health and safety of our employees as our highest priority and that is why we have been working closely with local government and public health authorities in India to address the challenges that we and all companies are facing in dealing with the COVID-19 crisis," it said in a statement to Reuters.
Foxconn declined to comment on factory output or specific staffing levels. Apple did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
India has benefited from Apple's move to shift some areas of production from China to other markets as it navigates a trade war between Washington and Beijing, with Apple announcing in March it had started the assembly of the iPhone 12 in India.
While Apple's share of the budget phone-dominated India market is small, CEO Tim Cook said in January that India business doubled in the December quarter compared to the previous year, helped by an online store launch.

oh man many people sent me this one so the iPhone 12. iPhone 12 it comes out we see the prices in fact I just covered the prices off the top 699, 799, 999, 10.99, and look that’s not a cheap smartphone the 699. I was actually pretty happy with yes but it’s not a cheap smartphone by any means it’s not in the mid-range there’s no option really there you got to go buy the older models if that’s what you’re targeting now that’s one thing to be said sitting here in North America but so many people hit me up from India we have the Indian audience obviously and said oh you better be doing some conversions right now low because you think you got it bad with those price points you better be doing some conversions from the Indian currency to USD head over to the website right now and it’s not hard to do right now because apple recently launched their online store in India so we can do it and you know what I did well what’s up I took this number here what is it 119 900. Yeah, I took that number that’s your starting price for the iPhone 12 pro. I took that number I did a little conversion how much is it it’s over a hundred dollars so the same phone that starts at 999 USD in the states let me just do it one more time make sure it didn’t move too much since I said that the same phone retails 9.99 in the united states did you get the number wait how did you get one five nine uh is this, uh no this is how dare you this is not the right price oh here we go I’m gonna get this I just did it it’s over 1700. I believe you but I just I want to make sure that I got it right I mean people were tweeting this at here we go yeah oh I did it in reverse here this is this is brutal we’re dead we’re dead right now this is the most silence ever on the show in the history of the show I’m doing straightupxy.com we’re not messing around anymore we can get to the bottom of this and we’re going to do the pricing because the people need to know what they’re really dealing with well this is the price though right is this the price that’s the price they make it confusing only because if you have a trade-in and also they’re trying to convince you to pay it monthly okay so what’s the full price so that number that you’re highlighting is currently 1633 USD on xe.com doing a conversion this 119 900 yes so 1633 is the starting price for the iPhone 12 pro non-max that same device in the united states is 9.99 right that’s a huge difference that’s a huge gap and of course we’ve talked so much on this show about why that is you have the tariffs and that particular model not being assembled or a certain percentage of it being assembled in India hurts the actual retail price that customers pay there and it’s important for us to reference this will because on top of the fact that you have uh a different cost of living in India different wages in India and then then you come on here and you talk to the world essentially on YouTube about the price of something and you say oh 9.99 you know it kind of lines up man if you don’t reference this and realize what you’re really talking about in that market which is almost double it’s crazy now it gets even crazier I suppose if you go there and select a different model like if I go up to the 512 that’s how you got the one five nine nine hundred so if I change this to a five what am I gonna be I get up to two thousand one hundred and seventy seven ninety three I wow um is that right can I spend that on an iPhone. I guess, I can for the pro max this is the buy page right this is the buy page yeah so it’s a special one that’s why they, they want to do apple trade-in first yeah, they want you to do a trade-in or pay for it monthly because they realize how big of a price that is obviously uh yeah so the iPhone 12 pro is the one one nine nine hundred and the pro max starts at one two nine nine hundred and then, of course, the different variants when you change the storage goes up from there but it’s easy to spend close to two grand for an iPhone 11 pro in India and so it’s worth the conversation.

iPhone 12 Pre-Orders: How to Prepare
Over the years, standing in line for an iPhone in front of your local Apple Store on launch day has shifted to frantically refreshing the Apple online store checkout page to pre-order an iPhone from the comfort of your home.
If you consider the strain that COVID-19 has put on product availability, as well as our ability to even pick up an iPhone at a retail store, getting an iPhone 12 on launch day could be more difficult than ever. So this year, every shortcut counts when rushing to get your online iPhone 12 pre-order confirmed by Apple.
Apple has recognized the increased need to pre-order an iPhone 12 online with a tool that will let you prepare your order ahead of time, though there are some limits. Read on for details.
When Can I Pre-Order an iPhone 12?
Apple is staggering its release of the different iPhone 12 models this year.
The iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro pre-orders started on Friday, Oct. 16. The iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 12 Pro Max pre-orders begin Friday, Nov. 6 at 8 a.m. ET / 5 a.m. PT.
If you're unsure which iPhone 12 model is right for you, we broke down the differences, and here's what photography enthusiasts should consider.
iPhone 12 Release Date
The iPhone 12 and 12 Pro arrived on Friday, Oct. 23 in Australia, China, Germany, Japan, the UK, and the US. They launched in India, South Korea, and more than a dozen other countries on Friday, Oct. 30.
The iPhone 12 Pro Max and iPhone 12 mini are in stores beginning Friday, Nov. 13.
Prepare Your Pre-Order
Like it did with the iPhone 12 and 12 Pro, Apple will let you go through a "pre pre-order" phase for iPhone 12 mini and 12 Pro Max that lets you prep everything ahead of time so all you need to do is hit purchase once pre-order time rolls around. The option should be available until 9 p.m. PT / midnight ET tonight.
Open the Apple Store app on your current iPhone or iPad and sign into your account. In the Featured section of the app, tap the Get ready for iPhone pre-order now header. You are instructed to go through the typical process of selecting your iPhone 12 model, color/finish, carrier (or unlocked), capacity, and whether you have a device to trade in.
In order to "save" your prepared pre-order, you must select Apple Card Monthly Installments and go through the process of agreeing to a monthly installment payment plan, then confirming your current Apple Card. If you don’t have an Apple Card, you will be required to go through the process of applying for an Apple Card monthly installment plan.
When ordering an iPhone 12, I could not get the process to complete by selecting the one-time payment option. Even though I would prefer to pay in full at a later date, I could not find a way to select that as an option up front. My speculation is you will have the option to pay in full once your order is complete and you receive your iPhone 12.
If you’re willing to go the Apple Card/installment plan route to set up your pre-order, opt in/out of Apple Care and select Get Ready for Pre-Order and add your selection to your account. The next page will give you a breakdown of the steps you’ve already taken to choose your device, and the remaining steps to complete your pre-order.
Selecting Continue on this page only confirms your device selection and your method of payment. You still have to be ready on the actual pre-order day/time to complete your order and confirm a shipping date, so be sure to set those alarms and get your iPhone 12 pre-order trigger fingers ready.
View Your Pre-Order
Now that you have confirmed your pre-pre-order, view your confirmation in the For You section of the Apple Store app. You will also receive an email confirmation. Within those confirmations, you can add the pre-order start dates to your calendar, as well as add a Siri Shortcut to open the Apple Store app and take you directly to your pre pre-order for an even faster checkout.

Smartphone market in India recovers in Q3 with record high shipments
TheTechMedia.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/Brand-New-VS-Refurbished-Smartphones-Mobiles-in-GST-Scenario-800×405-1-300×152.png 300w, https://TheTechMedia.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/Brand-New-VS-Refurbished-Smartphones-Mobiles-in-GST-Scenario-800×405-1-768×389.png 768w” sizes=”(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px”>
The COVID-19 pandemic lockdown forced a shutdown on the supply chain of smartphones in India and across the globe as well. But the recent unlocks by the Indian Government eased off the goods movement across the country, and has resulted in a recovery of smartphone shipment in India. Canalys, an analytics firm, has published the numbers for ‘India smartphone market Q3 2020’, and according to the report, smartphone shipment in India has recovered, posting 8% growth to 50 million units in Q3. This is an all-time record for smartphone shipments in a single quarter.
Tumblr media
Chinese smartphone maker, Xiaomi, continues to be the market leader in India with a 26.1% market share. Xiaomi’s smartphone shipment grew 9% to 13.1 million units. Samsung’s aggressive pricing strategy seems to have paid off as well, as it took over Vivo to bag the second place. The Korean smartphone maker holds a 20.4% market share in Q3 2020, which is slightly lower than its share in Q3 2019, i.e. 20.6%. Samsung’s shipments grew 7% to 10.2 million units. Canalys attributes “aggressive product portfolio and pricing strategy in the low-end” to Samsung’s success.
Tumblr media
Vivo and Realme follow Samsung, ranking 3rd and 4th respectively. Vivo’s market share, which was registered to be 17.6%, stands close to Realme’s 17.4% market share in Q3. Vivo and Realme are the only two smartphone brands in the top 5 list with double-digit shipment growth. Vivo’s shipment grew 19% to 8.8 million units, whereas, Realme’s shipment increased by 23% to 8.7 million units.
Oppo closes out on the fifth spot with a 12.1% share in the Indian smartphone market. Its shipment rose by only 6% to 6.1 million units. All the other smartphone brands round up to a 6.3% market share together, which is embarrassingly lower than the fifth-placed Oppo.
Apple’s new venture in India with the online Apple store also seems to have paid dividends for the company, as it has registered double-digit growth in smartphone shipments to 800K units in Q3 2020. Rushabh Doshi, Canalys Research Director, said, “It has opened a direct online store, giving it several new angles in its go-to-market strategy, such as utilizing device trade-ins to provide purchase incentives, or bundling AirPods with iPhones to make them more appealing.” Rushabh also points out that going forward, it might get difficult for Apple to grow in India. The company’s poor pricing strategy with the iPhone 12s in India and the unavailability of 5G in the country, which is a prime feature in Apple’s latest flagship device, might not favor the Cupertino-based company.
Varun Kannan, Canalys Research Analyst, said, “Ongoing tension between India and China has been a hot topic in the past few months, but we have yet to see a significant impact on purchase decisions of mass-market customers.” As the report suggests, 76% of the total smartphone shipments were carried out by Chinese smartphone brands, up from 74% last year.
Post the Indo-Chinese border face off earlier this year, a national sentiment arose about boycotting Chinese products among the majority of Indian citizens. Even the homegrown Micromax has tried to benefit from this opportunity by setting its foot back in the Indian smartphone market with its ‘In’ smartphones. The government is also pushing for ‘self-reliance’, but as the Canalys’ report suggests, it does not show any effects yet.
“The government, slowly but surely reducing restrictions on movement after a three-month lockdown, has created the perfect atmosphere for sustained growth. While almost all vendors have shown positive shipment growth, the true winners are the online channels, who have been buoyed with a huge influx of devices ahead of the festive season. Ongoing sales at Amazon and Flipkart are a clear indication that despite the economic downturn, India’s penchant for a good smartphone, and a good bargain, remains intact,” said Adwait Mardikar, Canalys research analyst.
