My function generator went completely crazy. I had expected something like this, it is very old unit. I don’t know what happened, but first thing I discovered was something like a jitter on rectangular waveform. Then I switched to sinewave and it looked like it is slightly phase or frequency modulated. I looked at its output using spectrum analyzer and realized it was completely ugly, almost no clean peak. Then I tried to demodulate it on the edge of a IF filter of my spectrum analyzer and realized, that what I see is a frequency modulation with a 50Hz signal with strong second and third harmonics (which is something, that could be caused by the demodulation method). 50Hz is mains frequency here, so it looked like an easy fix to me, some hum oriented issue like aged electrolytic capacitor or what. But then I tried to confirm that by setting trigger of zerospan video to a mains and realized, that it is something around 50Hz, but definitely not phase locked to a mains, so I am almost sure that this doesn’t come from mains. It have to be something oscilating near 50Hz, but completely independent on mains frequency, which, in fact, means, that this is not some easy to fix issue.
I am curious what the heck is that, but that device is kind of overcomplicated. It has a lot of features like gating, phase locking, etc., which is something, that makes whole situation much worse, on top of that all, I have currently no time to play with that thing, so I decided to buy a new arbitrary waveform generator, which is something, that possibly replace a lot of functionality of a function generator, which allows me to delay repair of my function generator. And here is the point. I was looking for the cheapest usable arbitrary waveform generator, when something attracted my attention — Rigol’s SiFi technology. What the hell is that? I am not huge fan of Rigol, in fact, I hate them like everything that origins in China or Taiwan, but I am not “dumb and blind” and if they bring something well designed to the market, I have absolutely no problem to pay for it. It doesn’t happen much often, but it does happen and there is possibility that it happened in this particular case. So what the SiFi technology means. The main problem with the modern arbitrary waveform generators is that the waveform have to be designed with some respect to the sampling rate. When these are used as a function generators, they work like an DDS with all problems that DDS have, like the phase distortion. There are frequencies on which this doesn’t happen, because they are in some relation with the sample rate. And what SiFi does is that it varies slightly the sample rate to make this happen on any frequency, producing signal that is in clarity point of view comparable to what function generators does. So it opens the possibility to fully replace my aging function generator with a new arbitrary waveform generator, which could be great, but. That technology has its own pitfalls. I don’t know how that variable samplerate is generated and how clean it is and I am completely unable to find it. Every jitter on the sampling clock propagate itself into output as a phase noise. It’s really hard to generate precise phase clean variable frequency clock signal. And that’s a thing. If that variable frequency clock signal is generated some phase clean way, then that device would be a great, but if not, then the result would be much worse than a simple dumb DDS. In fact, that generator is not a cheap one, but it’s affordable.
And this is where it’s hard to make decision. Go or not go? I don’t know, so I am asking. Is there someone, who has experiences with this technology and these generators? I would like to ask some questions and, if it would be possible, to suggest some measurements just to determine how that thing performs.
