The residential complex "Lebed" on the shore of the Khimki Reservoir is a fragment of a more comprehensive design for an entire neighborhood, conceived by the architectural studio of Andrey Meerson in the mid-1960s. In addition to the constructed building-complex with service enterprises in the stylobate and underground parking, it was supposed to include two more groups of high-rise towers, as well as an extended building on stilts. The authors (architect Elena Podolskaya) declared the principles of true brutalists in 1968: The surfaces of monolithic reinforced concrete after formwork removal would not be rubbed down or faced; the brick walls were also intended to remain in their natural state, without plaster. The suspended panels made of expanded clay concrete would not have glass or ceramic cladding; instead, their surface layer would be concrete. However, Moscow realities still led to the fact that on the complex completed by 1973, the suspended panels were covered with pale green "iris" glass tiles, and other concrete surfaces were faced with white stone. Only the red brick, exotic for modernist Moscow, retained its authentic texture, from which, even before the 1980s, arches— the main attribute of restrained Soviet postmodernism—immediately emerged. And inside the arches appeared fairy-tale barn doors with almost forged hinges.

India’s Largest Hydro Power Project: Subansiri Dam & the Crucial Role of Formwork in Its Construction
In the heart of the Eastern Himalayas, on the border between Arunachal Pradesh and Assam, stands a colossal symbol of India’s renewable energy ambitions — the Subansiri Lower Hydro Electric Project (SLHEP). Once completed, it will be India’s largest hydro power project, with an impressive capacity of 2,000 megawatts (MW).
But behind the power and scale of this engineering marvel lies a critical component that often goes unnoticed — formwork. It’s the unsung hero that shapes the dam, quite literally.
🚧 What is the Subansiri Dam?
The Subansiri Dam is a run-of-the-river hydroelectric project constructed by NHPC Limited (National Hydroelectric Power Corporation). Stretching across the Subansiri River — a major tributary of the Brahmaputra — the project is a major step toward boosting India’s clean energy supply in the northeastern region.
Project Capacity: 2,000 MW
Location: Arunachal Pradesh–Assam border
Type: Concrete gravity dam with underground power house
Significance: Will power millions of homes, reduce fossil fuel dependence, and support regional development
But how do engineers shape such a massive, high-precision structure? This is where formwork becomes indispensable.
🏗️ The Importance of Formwork in Dam Construction
Formwork is a temporary or permanent mold used to hold freshly poured concrete in place until it hardens into the desired shape and gains strength. In dam construction, especially for a project as complex as Subansiri, formwork is mission-critical.
Here’s why formwork is so vital:
Structural Precision: Large hydro structures demand extreme accuracy. Whether it's the spillway, powerhouse tunnels, or intake structures, formwork ensures the correct geometry and alignment.
Load Support: Wet concrete is extremely heavy. Formwork systems are designed to withstand immense pressure, keeping the structure stable during casting.
Speed and Efficiency: Reusable formwork modules accelerate construction and reduce project timelines — essential for high-impact projects like Subansiri.
Versatility: Dam structures are not simple boxes. They include curved walls, deep shafts, and sloped channels. Formwork can be custom-engineered to accommodate these complex designs.
✅ Key Advantages of Modern Formwork in Subansiri Dam
Let’s look at the major benefits of using efficient formwork systems in hydro power projects:
1. High Strength and Durability
Formwork components made of steel handle repetitive use and high stress, making them ideal for mega-structures.

Brick Waterproofing Products: The Underappreciated Hero of Building Maintenance

Brick waterproofing products are the first line of defence against the damaging force of water, although they are frequently buried behind the scenes. Brick waterproofing is one of the most important yet little-known techniques for preserving the structural soundness and visual appeal of brick structures.
The concrete water proof sealer is a proactive and affordable way to improve the durability and performance of concrete. These treatments may significantly increase a building's longevity and aesthetic appeal, whether it's a modern brick house, a business front, or a historic brownstone. Moisture over time can weaken concrete surfaces' longevity, aesthetic appeal, and structural integrity.
Improved Workability for Intricate Designs
The capacity of concrete admixtures to increase the workability of concrete is one of its main advantages. Concrete's ease of mixing, placing, compacting, and finishing without segregation is referred to here. Conventional concrete can be challenging to move into position in projects that need complex formwork or reinforcing. Admixtures that improve workability, such as plasticisers or superplasticizers, make the mixture more fluid without adding too much water, which makes it possible for the concrete to flow easily and fill even the most difficult moulds.
In precast applications or architectural projects where accuracy and finish are crucial, this is very helpful. For millennia, concrete has been used extensively in building because of its strength, adaptability, and durability. However, contemporary demands on building projects—from resilience and design complexity to sustainability and speed—have forced engineers and builders to look for creative improvements.
Enhanced Chemical and Water Resistance
High degrees of impermeability and chemical resistance are required for several applications, especially in industrial floors, basements, wastewater treatment plants, and coastal constructions. Concrete's porosity is decreased by waterproofing admixtures, which drastically reduces the quantity of water that may pass through the substance. Others are made to withstand alkalis, acids, and salts, preventing corrosion and gradual deterioration of the concrete.
In settings where exposure to hostile compounds occurs often, these advantages are crucial for preserving structural integrity. The revolutionary components known as concrete admixtures are added throughout the mixing process to customise the performance of concrete to meet certain requirements. Even if certain mineral or chemical components are utilised in modest amounts, their influence is significant.
Enhanced Resource Efficiency and Sustainability
Modern construction has made sustainability a major subject, and admixtures support greener building techniques in several ways. Since cement is one of the most carbon-intensive building materials, it lessens the need for extra cement in a mix by increasing workability and strength.
The judicious use of admixtures might be crucial in projects striving for LEED certification or other green building standards to satisfy sustainability and performance goals at the same time. Concrete naturally shrinks as it dries and cures, which can cause internal tension and surface cracking. This may jeopardise water resistance and durability in addition to looks.
Efflorescence, Mildew, and Mould Resistance
The formation of mould and mildew, which not only degrades the look of concrete but may also be harmful to one's health, is mostly caused by moisture. Furthermore, efflorescence—a white, powdery residue brought on by water-soluble salts rising to the surface—can result from the presence of water in concrete.
Sealing the concrete stops salt buildup and helps get rid of the moisture that encourages mould and mildew. This maintains the concrete appearing healthier and cleaner, especially in moist or shadowed places like retaining walls and basements. Brick waterproofing is a useful and crucial step in long-term building maintenance, whether you're safeguarding a recently constructed building or a historic relic.
Increased Stain and Chemical Resistance in Buildings Through Energy Efficiency
Concrete surfaces are frequently exposed to oils, acids, salts, and other harsh chemicals, especially in commercial and industrial contexts. These chemicals can seep into untreated concrete, resulting in corrosion, discoloration, and long-term harm. By acting as a barrier against these impurities, waterproof sealers facilitate spill cleanup and lower the possibility of long-lasting discoloration.
This advantage is particularly helpful in industrial facilities, garages, workshops, and kitchens where chemical exposure is a regular worry. Although it may not be immediately apparent, sealing concrete in foundations and basements can help increase energy efficiency. Higher humidity levels within a structure can result from moisture in the walls and floors, which puts more strain on the heating and cooling systems.

RCC Construction: Aesthetic and Strong—Here's Why!

In the ever-evolving world of construction in Nepal, Reinforced Cement Concrete (RCC) has emerged as the preferred method for building strong, safe, and beautiful homes and buildings. Whether you're constructing a home in Kathmandu, an apartment in Pokhara, or a commercial space in Butwal, RCC offers a perfect balance of strength and aesthetic potential.
But what exactly is RCC? And why has it become the go-to construction technique in Nepal?
In this blog, we’ll explore how RCC construction combines durability, design flexibility, and visual appeal, making it a smart investment for modern living.
What is RCC Construction?
RCC (Reinforced Cement Concrete) is a composite material made from:
Cement
Sand and aggregate (gravel/stone)
Water
Steel reinforcement bars (rebar)
The concrete provides compressive strength, while the steel reinforcement handles tensile (pulling) forces. Together, they create a structure that is both strong and flexible, suitable for residential and commercial buildings alike. The key elements of RCC construction include formwork, reinforcement, mixing, pouring, and curing, each playing a vital role in ensuring the structure’s strength and durability.
Strength That Withstands Time and Nature
1. Earthquake-Resistant
Nepal lies in a high seismic zone. So, seismic activities in Nepal are frequent due to its location along the active Himalayan fault line, making earthquake-resistant construction essential for safety. RCC structures, when designed properly, are much more resilient against earthquakes than traditional brick or mud houses.
Proper placement of rebar ensures the building can flex without collapsing.
RCC allows for the use of shear walls and structural joints that dissipate seismic energy.
2. Fire and Weather Resistance
RCC is non-combustible, making it far safer in the event of a fire. It also withstands heavy rainfall, UV rays, and wind, making it ideal for Nepal’s diverse climate from Terai’s heat to the Himalayan snow.
3. Long Lifespan
An RCC structure, when properly constructed and maintained, can last 50+ years without major deterioration. Unlike steel-only or wood-based structures, RCC doesn’t rust easily or warp with temperature changes.
Aesthetic Flexibility: RCC Can Look Great Too!
Many people believe that RCC is only about strength and has little to do with design or beauty. That’s a myth!
1. Modern Architectural Freedom
RCC allows for large open spaces, wide spans, and creative geometries. Architects can design:
Open-plan kitchens and living rooms
Stylish staircases and cantilever balconies
Minimalist, contemporary facades
2. Smooth Finishes and Designs
RCC surfaces can be plastered, painted, tiled, or even left exposed for an industrial modern look. You can mold it into columns, arches, domes, or flat slabs to match your personal style.
3. Integrated Aesthetics with Functionality
Designers can easily incorporate:
Decorative moldings or curves
False ceilings
Hidden electrical or plumbing conduits
Artistic facades and lighting features
RCC Construction Process
Design Phase
Architects and structural engineers design layout, load calculations, and reinforcement details.
Shuttering and Formwork
Temporary molds are set up to shape beams, columns, slabs, etc.
Reinforcement Placement
Steel bars are placed based on engineering drawings.
Concrete Pouring
Concrete is mixed (manually or via ready-mix trucks) and poured into formwork.
Curing
Moisture is maintained for 7–14 days to gain strength.
Finishing
Plaster, flooring, tiling, or painting is done based on the aesthetic requirements.
RCC vs. Traditional Brick and Mud Construction
Strength:
RCC: High (earthquake-resistant)
Brick/Mud: Low to medium
Durability:
RCC: 50+ years
Brick/Mud: 20–30 years
Flexibility in Design:
RCC: High
Brick/Mud: Limited
Fire Resistance:
RCC: Excellent
Brick/Mud: Poor
Aesthetic Options:
RCC: Unlimited
Brick/Mud: Traditional look only
Construction Speed:
RCC: Faster with modern methods
Brick/Mud: Slower
Maintenance:
RCC: Low
Brick/Mud: High (prone to cracks and frequent repairs)
Common RCC Applications in Nepal
Residential Homes (one to four stories)
Commercial Buildings (shops, offices)
Schools and Hospitals
Bridges and Flyovers
Water Tanks and Retaining Walls
With increasing urbanization, RCC is now even being used for luxury homes and designer villas in cities like Bhaktapur, Lalitpur, Chitwan, and Dharan.
Long-Term Benefits of RCC
Low Maintenance
No frequent repairs or repainting due to cracking or settling.
Energy Efficiency
RCC roofs can accommodate insulation and solar panels easily.
High Resale Value
A well-constructed RCC home commands better prices in the real estate market.
Scalability
Future floors or extensions are easier to design and build with an RCC foundation.
RCC Tips for Homeowners in Nepal
Always hire a licensed civil engineer for structural design.
Choose high-quality materials: branded cement, rust-free steel, clean aggregates.
Ensure curing is done properly after casting to avoid surface cracks.
Use experienced contractors and supervisors.
Regularly inspect rebar placement before pouring concrete.
Conclusion
RCC construction is not just about strength, it’s also about elegance, safety, and smart design. For homeowners in Nepal, choosing RCC means you’re investing in a home that stands strong against earthquakes, weather, and time, while still offering modern, flexible design options.
If you're building your dream home, RCC provides the ideal combination of form and function, safety and style. RCC construction, known for being both aesthetic and strong, becomes even more reliable when executed by the best construction company committed to quality and precision.
