I'm excited to announce the launch of my new Substack blog, where I'll be sharing reflections, research, and explorations on architecture, landscape architecture, and other areas that continue to inspire and challenge my thinking.

To begin, I’ll be republishing a selection of past newspaper articles, essays, academic papers, and personal reflections—pieces that have shaped my journey and continue to resonate. These will lay the groundwork for new, timely writings that I look forward to sharing soon.

The first post is titled “What is an Architect in Today’s Society?” Originally published in 2011, this article still raises questions that I believe are vital to the profession and its role in an evolving world.

Echoes of Remembrance: The Interplay Between Lutyens' Cenotaph and Hollein's Architectural Object

House of the Boulonnais Horse is a rehabilitation and an extension of a stud farm

The farm of Suze is a former post house connecting Boulogne-sur-Mer to Paris. It is today transformed into a stud farm of breeding and care in order to preserve the race of draught horses from the Boulonnais area. The architecture is simple, rustic, using the traditional volumes, materials and constructive systems in a contemporary vocabulary.

The development of our proposal is part of an approach that aims to respect, preserve and enhance the context of the operation that we considered remarkable. Remarkable because it embodies the specificity of an activité and a relationship between man and horse in a particular environment that is that of the Natural Park OfCapsand OpalMarshes.

Our goal is to “help revive this rich heritage, and thus enhance it” in a context where rural architecture and the Boulonnais horse are under threat.

We wantedto take advantage of a singular and exceptional rural architecture and landscape and on the identity of the site both from the point of view of itsarchitectural, landscape specificities, as wellas from the point of view of the uses specific to the equine sector to be developed.

bThe three lines of thought are therefore organized as follows: – The architectural point of view: a project developed around the typological specificity of the Suze Farm (quadrangular farmyard with open angles offering perspectives on the landscape); – The landscape view: development and reinforcement of the bocagère mesh; – The point of view of the uses: use the specificity and functional implications related to the development of the Boulonnais draught horse (male/horse relationship).

In terms of location and operation, the organization of housing-exploitation on a quadrangle plan is preserved and strengthened. The new buildings, built of wood, stones and bricks, local materials, are located around the grass quarry to potentially reform a second quadrangle.

The whole is intended to create ahomogeneous and coherent architecture. All uses are turned on these “outside interiors,” including the existing courtyard. It is therefore a question of placing the life of the equipment at its heart, as it was once possible by juxtaposing, without crossing, the different public and professional uses in order to provoke situations of encounters allowing to inhabit the place.

The various entrances are accessible from the outdoor parking spaces without being telescoped. This large outdoor space will be treated like a landscape of plasters with vivid hedges and trees of endogenous essences.

The aim is to register the parking lots in a landscaped treatment consistent with the rest of the site but also to take advantage of the water management system specific to the bocage. From this one and the Departmental Road,the main façade of Building B ensures a public hook and the commercial showcase of the equipment.

Because of the will of the ownerto develop, eventually, the local tourism potential, it was important for us to design the project “like a farm”. At the same time in the processof architecturalreflection and local technical solutions. That is to say to settle as close as possible to peasant common sense in a certain way.

Common sense linked to the operation, the simplicity of constructive systems and materials and the economy of means and territory. It is in this capacity that we believe we can participate in the preservation and strengthening of the regional cultural heritage.

Architectural Reflections: Hollein's Monumental Transformations

Hans Hollein's "Transformations" series encapsulates a unique design approach, reminiscent of his iconic "Monument to Victims of the Holocaust" collage. In this series, barren landscapes serve as canvases for monumental industrial objects, evoking an enigmatic and ominous architectural space. The scaling-up of a train carriage, placed on a monumental pedestal, transforms it into a haunting symbol of remembrance.

This concept echoes the monumental scale seen in the Zeppelin Fields in Nuremberg, where the destruction of the swastika serves as a poignant movie reel of the demise of Nazi ideology. The detonation of the massive swastika symbolizes the end of a dark chapter in history, resonating with today's political unrest and ideological struggles, particularly within Israel.

The juxtaposition of architectural styles and political ideologies underscores the complexity of contemporary landscapes. Hollein's "Aircraft Carrier City in Landscape" further challenges conventional understandings of architecture by placing towering images of military vessels in rural settings, blurring the lines between past and present, war and peace.

In today's tumultuous political climate, where tensions run high and ideological conflicts persist, Hollein's collages serve as poignant reminders of the power of architecture to evoke emotions, challenge perceptions, and provoke reflection on the human condition.

Harmony Amidst Disruption: Hans Hollein's Architectural Reflections

In the heart of Vienna, amidst the bustling streets and historic architecture, Hans Hollein, the visionary architect, pondered over his latest creation. With a mind fuelled by innovation and a spirit unbound by convention, he sought to challenge the very essence of architecture itself. As he gazed upon his collage of New York City, a city that seemed to pulsate with energy and ambition, he couldn't help but feel a sense of urgency in his work.

The recent earthquake that rattled the eastern seaboard had stirred something within him. It was as if the earth itself was crying out for change, for a new way of thinking about our relationship with the built environment. And so, in his collage, he depicted a daring vision—a superstructure towering over Manhattan, a symbol of resilience and defiance against the forces of nature.

But as he delved deeper into his creation, he couldn't shake off the nagging feeling of unease. What if his vision was misinterpreted? What if instead of a symbol of hope, his superstructure became a target for those who sought to sow fear and destruction?

In the midst of these troubling thoughts, he remembered the words of his mentor, Clemens Holzmeister, who had once told him that true art lies in understanding the delicate balance between man and nature. As he worked tirelessly on his collage, he couldn't help but ponder the complex relationship between Austria and America, two nations bound together by history and yet divided by ideology. In the great war of architecture and enlightenment, where capitalism reigned supreme, how could he bridge the gap between these two worlds?

And then it hit him—the key lay not in grand gestures or bold statements, but in the subtle nuances of his art. By harnessing the power of the reversed motor scraper, the very symbol of man's mastery over the earth, he could create something truly revolutionary—a structure that not only defied gravity but also embraced the natural rhythms of the world.

And so, as he put the finishing touches on his collage, Hans Hollein couldn't help but feel a sense of pride and accomplishment. For in that moment, he had not only created a work of art but also a testament to the enduring power of architecture to shape our world and our destiny.

Humble Lines and Grounded Grace

As towers rise to see the sky,

They climb so high, but we ask why.

To claim a view, a grand display,

Is but the boast of fools at play.

Perspective shifts, it does not own,

It’s how we live, how seeds are sown.

John’s advice, the wrong end’s grip,

Creates designs that often slip.

Odd rules we chase, fuel we burn,

Yet miss the lessons we should learn.

Climate laughs at our pursuits,

Stone unchanged since ancient roots.

Glass reflects a world in sway,

Foundations lost, with naught to say.

Architecture, with godly airs,

Refrain from heights, from distant stares.

In humble lines and grounded grace,

Find the truth in time and space.

Not in towers that pierce the sky,

But in the earth where answers lie.

Bertram Cottages, red bricks align,

An extension of thought, a line divine,

Glass mirrors where horizons are found,

A sill with no depth, yet vision deep,

In Wimbledon’s passage, secrets keep.

A house for Sharon, subdued sky above,

Our American friend, in stories told,

In red brick whispers, dreams unfold.
