COSTA RICA
Arenal Volcano looms above a horse grazing in the fertile northern lowlands. The country’s mountainous terrain meant that it never developed large farms, as other countries in Central America did, so it was never dominated by a powerful landholding class. Costa Rica’s small-property owners have elected presidents who’ve made education a priority, ensured clean water, instituted social security, and established free clinics in most villages.

Costa Rica Day Two: Arenal Observatory Lodge: An Afternoon Walk With An Anteater After the Rain.
After my morning walks  at  the Arenal Observatory Lodge in Costa Rica on Saturday I was going to spend some time on the observation deck watching  the  many species of  birds attracted to the fruit that is put out by the guides.   However the skies clouded and rains came  and continued  into the afternoon. The forecast called for mostly sunny skies but I was in a rainforest so I guess rain is…

Volcanoes And Us
Amazing scenes have been unfolding on the TV screen recently, the Earth itself cracking wide open as bright orange fire laps around buildings and rivers of molten lava surge with unstoppable power through the darkness. This is, of course, the latest eruption in Iceland, the land of fire and ice, captured live and beamed in graphic detail straight to our news channels. Michaela and I have always…

Arenal Volcano, Monteverde, Costa Rica

Every day we spend on this beautiful planet is an excellent opportunity to reflect on biodiversity's critical role in humanity's history and continued survival. Biodiversity is the total variety of life in all its forms, from bacteria and genes to entire ecosystems like coral reefs, rain forests, ocean environments and more. Our water, food, medicines, clothes, shelter and energy depend on healthy ecosystems.
Costa Rica's Monteverde Cloud Forest is a perfect example of a local ecosystem's impact on the world's biodiversity. This forest is home to about 50% of Costa Rica's biodiversity and represents 2.5% of the world's biodiversity. Today we must reflect on our relationship with the world's ecosystems and work to be better stewards of the earth.

Costa Rica Day Eight: A Last Hike At The Arenal Volcano And On To San Jose
I was up early again, before the sunrise at 6 a.m. , on my last day at the Arenal Observatory Lodge in Costa Rica.  My ride to San Jose  was scheduled to leave at  noon.   I wanted to get in one more hike  before I left . There are  so many trails on the lodge’s property ,  each with a different variety of  flora and fauna, I wasn’t  sure where my last hike would take me. It was  mostly clear…
