Apollo’s reunion with Aricka Jackson

(Apollo-as-Lester runs into the daughter of Poseidon and the events of the last 48 hours catches up to him- cue the emotional breakdown.)

It had been some years since the last time I’d seen young Aricka Jackson, eldest Jackson child and ultra secret daughter of Poseidon until Percy came into the picture, but I recognized her immediately.

She was older than the last time, of course she was, and her hair was longer, almost reaching the middle of her back. Her unique turquoise-teal-periwinkle eyes/ the envy of any mortal or Olympian-had the slightest crinkles around them, and she held a young girl on her hip.

When she saw me, she passed the babe off to a man standing by her; who was holding the hand of another little one, another girl. Her children-? Enough time had passed for her to have had not one but two children-?

She walks over, a look of shock and surprise on her face. It was an unusual sight. Aricka was a confident assured woman; nothing caught her off guard. She was finally close enough I could catch the scent of salt and ozone radiating from her- the ocean clung to her skin like another article of clothing. She stood in front of me and I in front of her for a long moment.

“…Apollo?” She whispers. Her hand reaches out like she was hesitant to touch something fragile, then she pushed on to brush the back of her hand against my cheek.

It was such a- tender, maternal- gesture that my 16-year-old emotional dam crumbled, and I fell against the daughter of Poseidon, who caught me as the tears overflowed, and I was reduced to an embarrassingly weepy state. One of her hands cradled the back of my neck, anchoring me against her shoulder, the other one was wrapped around my torso.

“Shh,” she whispered. “It’s alright, you made it to camp. I don’t know what happened to you, but rest assured we’ll fix it. You’re going to be fine. Shh…”

I made a vow to visit my actual mother the second I was restored to Olympus, because right now Aricka was the second most assuring maternal figure I’d encountered this day. I was a mess, snot and tears were sullying my face and potentially her shirt but she wasn’t repulsed by it, nor was she pushing me away.

Finally I wrapped my own arms around her, the girl I’d claimed as my champion, because she had an eager desire to make music and sing for her own enjoyment. She didn’t just smell of the ocean, I realized, but she also smelled of vanilla and sage, a scent usually associated with-well- myself.

She let me hide there in the sanctuary of her embrace until I could face the world once more, even then she kept an arm around my shoulder protectively. “Come,” she says softly. “Meet my husband and our two daughters, Kym Apollina and Iris Bianca Manaia.”
