If anyone wants a pop-culture history of America in the 1920s, publication date 1931, check it out: ‘Only Yesterday’ (on the Australian version of Project Gutenberg. Thanks for the considerate copyright laws, Australia, we appreciate it!) This is exactly my kind of thing anyway, and if anybody’s writing something set in the twenties, I can’t recommend it hard enough:
As for my emphasis upon the changing state of the public mind and upon the sometimes trivial happenings with which it was preoccupied, this has been deliberate. It has seemed to me that one who writes at such close range, while recollection is still fresh, has a special opportunity to record the fads and fashions and follies of the time, the things which millions of people thought about and talked about and became excited about and which at once touched their daily lives: and that he may prudently leave to subsequent historians certain events and policies, particularly in the field of foreign affairs, the effect of which upon the life of the ordinary citizen was less immediate and may not be fully measurable for a long time.
(after describing a hypothetical Typical Couple at the end of 1919)
One more word about Mr. and Mrs. Smith and we may dismiss them for the night. Not only have they never heard of radio broadcasting; they have never heard of Coué, the Dayton Trial, cross-word puzzles, bathing-beauty contests, John J. Raskob, racketeers, Teapot Dome, Coral Gables, the American Mercury, Sacco and Vanzetti, companionate marriage, brokers' loan statistics, Michael Arlen, the Wall Street explosion, confession magazines, the Hall-Mills case, radio stock, speakeasies, Al Capone, automatic traffic lights, or Charles A. Lindbergh.
The Post-war Decade lies before them.
Bold the ones you’ve heard of!
(Coué, the Dayton Trial, cross-word puzzles, bathing-beauty contests, John J. What is Napier jewelry: A Complete Guide
Napier Jewelry, a brand noted for its fashion-forward vision, diverse look, and astounding, daring creations, dominated the fashion industry at one time. While Napier’s jewelry is no more a famous brand, collectors and fashion fans still admire and seek their jewelry.
The costume jewelry in Napier dating from the nineteen twenties to the early thirties is exceedingly difficult to find and highly valued by both art deco collectors and art lovers. Like jewels in a Ciner suit, sometimes Napier pieces are hard to date by just looking at the label. This is particularly true for the inexperienced buyer or dealer who has not carefully practiced this kind of jewelry. Pieces from other decades are also confused with the twenties because very similar signs were commonly used – in particular the version in block letters shown below – for pieces produced in recent decades.
FloraG, Head of Marketing at OurPCB elaborates ” Napier Jewelry is a company that was known for its fashion-forward vision, eclectic style and stunning, bold designs. Although Napier jewelry is no longer a prominent brand, their jewelry is still highly valued and sought after by collectors and fashion lovers. The Napier jewelry has a wide price range, from around $20 for small earrings to over $300 for necklaces. The sterling silver collection is highly valued as are rare vintage pieces from the early 20th century. “
Joe Flanagan Founder of 90s Fashion World said “Napier was originally a brand that manufactured chains for men’s watches in the 1800s. It evolved into a quite big jewelry company and produced a lot of important high-end jewelry pieces. It was sought after because of its unique and forward-thinking designs. It even survived the two World Wars! Nowadays they still exist but it was bought by a bigger brand and it is not very known. For vintage lovers, however, Napier jewelry is still very sought after because of its historical value and beautiful craftsmanship.
Their designs are traditionally chunky and quite big, with geometric or floral designs. The value of each piece can go from $20 to $300 depending on what it is. What makes it so unique is that Napier jewelry didn’t follow trends but rather got inspiration from cultural events and each designer could be as personal as they wanted with their creations. For example, when King Tutankhamun’s burial place was discovered, Napier created a collection of jewelry with Egyptian elements that were really popular.

History of Napier Jewelry
The company Napier was set up in the late 1800s and starts as a manufacturer of men’s watch chains before it grew up as a brand of jewelry. It is one of the first modern enterprises in the world.
Napier was founded as a joystick company that supplies fashionable, globally-famous accessories. Popular celebrities such as Marylin Monroe, Grace Kelly, Arlene Francie and Duchess of Windsor tried and worn Napier jewelry, which further improved a brand reputation as a high-quality maker of jewelry.
1920s Block Mark
This label has been seen in the 1930’s with a filigree cuff bracelet. The appearance is somewhat different from the handles produced in the 1950s and later decades. However, several Napier patterns from the 1950s and 1960s, and even many diverse parts in the intervening decades, were used with the same block label. Be sure not to mistake your old Napier Jewels with these tags. Look at the general style, materials and design to differentiate older components from modern examples.
Abby, Head of Marketing PCB elaborates on ” In addition to the design, shape, and fashion of high-quality jewelry, they are also the preferred gemstones, and their prices are affordable for ordinary women. Napier Jewelry’s product line varies, including jewelry featuring artificial pearls and beads, large gold or silver-tone chains, and colorful enamel jewelry. Earrings, necklaces, and bracelets are all made of milk glass beads and art glass ornaments.
Napier jewelry comes in a range of prices, from around $20 for a pair of small earrings to over $300 for a sterling silver necklace, depending on the design, demand, and materials used.”
French Filigree Cuff Bracelet
The Napier Co. by Melinda Lewis, a suggested guide to learn more about this style of jewelry, shows similar cuff bracelets in the nineteen and thirties. These bracelets look very unique because they are made of intricately stamped French rhinestones and filigree gold. In Napier bits, “revival” filigree typically is not as fine in later decades. These pieces mostly represent the time they were produced with detail more delicately applied than they were seen in pieces that had a similar mark decades later.
1920s Oval Mark
This oval symbol is like the one seen below on sautoir necklaces. Surprisingly new, the label itself looks, but older collars such as these are difficult to come by and highly prized for collectors. The earlier works use a symbol which looks like this one but which is called Bliss, Napier’s forerunner.
Beaded Filigree Sautoir Necklace
A rare specimen of Napier’s early “flapper” sautoir-style necklace. It’s long, without any clasp, so it just falls over the head directly when wearing. This quality work is surprisingly good for its age; inexperienced collectors, who know only about Napier’s more recent lines readily sold in department stores, can mistake for a more modern Art deco re-energized product.
1920s Ear Screw Mark
This label was found in the following pair of Napier screw earrings from the 1920s. Just one of the pair’s earrings has the logo, but it is an obvious match.
Filigree Dangle Earrings
These slanting earrings in the pendant type from the 1920s are seldom seen with the back of the screws. They have filigree metal work similar to those seen in other Napier styles of this period, along with uncovered saphire-blue stones that decorate the top and bottom. According to Lewis, the most common colour of older Napier earrings is amber as specimens of this colour. Both Napier earrings of this age are regarded as rare and appreciated by enthusiastic collectors.
How Napier jewelry is unique?
Napier jewelry was renowned for its amazing creations of geometric and floral elements including false pearls, fake jewels, metals, enamel, and glass in gold and silver. They were also famous for their collection of sterling silver. It was a big, bold, chunky type of Napier. This was different and had a real influence on other designs of the period. Napier was a first brand to provide and render mass affordable costume jewelry.
It was one of the first to include new Parisian jewelry designs. Paris was still the fashion icon, but Napier was a fashion leader.
No genre or theme has been followed by Napier. The person jewelry designer was eclectic and influenced by his design. Present events influenced Napier projects. For example, Napier made a special bracelet with Egyptian designs to mark the occasion when King Tut’s tomb was discovered.
Napier produced premium products and wanted consistency in its name. Indeed, ‘Napier’ itself comes from ‘nae peer,’ that means that it does not have the same name. At one time it seemed that the jewelry of Napier was not the same.
FloraG, Head of Marketing at OurPCB explains “Napier Jewelry was famous for their stunning geometric and floral designs which included faux pearls, imitation gemstones, gold-plated metals, enamel, and glass. They also were well known for their sterling silver collection. Napier’s style has always been large bold pieces that made an impact on the jewelry industry at the time when other companies had settled into more traditional styles of design such as delicate filigree or low key diamond settings in platinum. Napiers’ creations stood out among many others because they broke away from these norms to create a new aesthetic trend in fashion with bold chunky shapes.”
Abby, Head of Marketing PCB tells us “Napier jewelry is famous for its unique geometric and floral elements, including fake pearls, fake jewelry, metal, enamel, and gold, and silver glass. They are also famous for collecting sterling silver. Ring. Napier is the first brand to offer and provide a large number of affordable costume jewelry. Napier produces quality products and wants consistency in its name. “

Is Napier jewelry valuable?
Though Napier jewelry no longer a popular brand, collectors and fashion lovers still appreciate their jewelry.
What is Napier jewelry made of?
Napier jewelry is one of fashion’s most renowned costume brands. It has endowed movie stars such as Marilyn Monroe and Grace Kelley with their handles, chests and earlobes. While the majority of the company’s offering was made of gold or other metals, such as sterling silver, some bits were made of actual gold.
Are Napier earrings nickel free?
Wendi Chanen is the senior purchaser of fashion jewels, for the Dayton-Hudson department stores, including Fields, who claims most Napier earrings in 1928, which are available in Marshall Field & Co. and other department stores, are nickel free.
