Visual Merchandiser

Circa 2011 - 2012 I was working as part time visual merchandiser and interior designer at one of artisan chocolate factory nearby my house. This company is pioneer of artisan chocolate “The First Chocolatier of Yogyakarta”. The owner  back to 2001 when a he was 35 years old Belgian man arrives in Indonesia without a plan in mind. Disappointed by the poor quality of chocolate, he decided to take matters into his own hands and endeavors to make some specialties of his low-land country using limited resources. And I work direct under him.

Lucky enough to work directly under him, by that time I just university student without much experienced. Wonder how I landed in this job? I guess most of the time I accidentally landed to my jobs. 

Back then I had dispute with my mom (for small thing). While crying over dispute, I write my application letter to this company as packaging staff and hoping my salary will able to support me to rent small room so I can out from the house. Handling over my resume with my teary and sore eyes to the security and marching home with low morale.

Within a week I got a phone call and they arrange for interview. Surprisingly they read my resume and instead put me as packaging staff, they hired me as visual merchandiser and interior designer. What a lucky one! *by that time no more dispute with my mom and finally aborted the idea to out from the house too. LOL. Hey, I was 22 years old back then and emotionally slightly or bit only not so stable :D

As visual merchandiser, I mostly decorate the shop for special events. Such Xmas, Eid Mubarak, Halloween, Easter and many other special events that I can recalled. The picture above me during Easter event. *try to find other pictures in different event, but can’t found it. 

I decorate the shop in Easter theme with few hen and chicks. I even made those hens by my self, wow back then I’m so creative huh? How my working procedure back then? 1. I will come up with proposal and idea. Do brainstorming with my boss, hand sketching the idea and discussing again and again till he approved it. 2. Then I will go to procurement department asking for certain budget.  3. Once the budget approved, I go by my self to purchased the materials. 4. Once the materials complete, I start to making those decorative stuffs by my self 5. Then arranged it in the shop. As simple as fun like that my job before.

Honestly I don’t feel like I’m working back then, instead just having fun and playing around. *until now I never feel like I really working tho, just like playing around and do what I like.

Owh, let me tell you how fun my workplace back then! It’s chocolate factory and shop, and we can eat a lot chocolates as much as we want! Like a dream job right? whenever salary time, they will give few package of chocolates too. 

But those chocolates not satisfy my curiosity. Good thing is I’m quite close with the cleaner/ factory keeper. She will bring me around even to the store room and she will show me the raw product or the raw chocolates. Okay, most of the time I wont be on my desk instead going around the factory or you will find me giggling with the cleaner in the store room while munching raw chocolate, 90% dark chocolate or any others raw products.*not stealing tho, we just do small testing and ease my curiosity how those things taste.

I sum up the experienced as visual merchandiser and interior designer in chocolates factory is really amazing yet fun experienced. Plus I worked directly under the owner, I learned a lot of things from him too. :D
