Scientists had hoped to shave off 10 minutes however NASA Administrator Invoice Nelson mentioned the influence altered the asteroid’s orbit by about 32 minutes. “This mission reveals that NASA is making an attempt to be prepared for regardless of the universe throws at us,” Nelson mentioned throughout a briefing at NASA headquarters in Washington. Neither asteroid posed a risk to Earth — and nonetheless don’t as they proceed their journey across the solar. That’s why scientists picked the pair for the world’s first try to change the place of a celestial physique. Launched final 12 months, the merchandising machine-size Dart — brief for Double Asteroid Redirection Check — was destroyed when it slammed into the asteroid 7 million miles (11 million kilometers) away at 14,000 mph (22,500 kph). Memorials
Tolkien and the characters and places from his works have become the namesake of various things around the world. These include street names, mountains, companies, species of animals and plants as well as other notable objects.
By convention, certain classes of features on Saturn's moon Titan are named after elements from Middle-earth. Colles (small hills or knobs) are named for characters, while montes (mountains) are named for mountains of Middle-earth. There are also asteroids named for Bilbo Baggins and Tolkien himself.
Three mountains in the Cadwallader Range of British Columbia, Canada, have been named after Tolkien's characters. These are Mount Shadowfax, Mount Gandalf and Mount Aragorn. On 1 December 2012, it was announced in the New Zealand press that a bid was launched for the New Zealand Geographic Board to name a mountain peak near Milford Sound after Tolkien for historical and literary reasons and to mark Tolkien's 121st birthday.
The "Tolkien Road" in Eastbourne, East Sussex, was named after Tolkien whereas the "Tolkien Way" in Stoke-on-Trent is named after Tolkien's eldest son, Fr. John Francis Tolkien, who was the priest in charge at the nearby Roman Catholic Church of Our Lady of the Angels and St. Peter in Chains. In the Hall Green and Moseley areas of Birmingham there are a number of parks and walkways dedicated to J. R. R. Tolkien—most notably, the Millstream Way and Moseley Bog. Collectively the parks are known as the Shire Country Parks. Also in Weston-super-Mare, Somerset, England there are a collection of roads in the 'Weston Village' named after locales of Middle Earth, namely Hobbiton Road, Bree Close, Arnor Close, Rivendell, Westmarch Way and Buckland Green.
In the Dutch town of Geldrop, near Eindhoven, the streets of an entire new neighbourhood are named after Tolkien himself ("Laan van Tolkien") and some of the best-known characters from his books.
In the Silicon Valley towns of Saratoga and San Jose in California, there are two housing developments with street names drawn from Tolkien's works. About a dozen Tolkien-derived street names also appear scattered throughout the town of Lake Forest, California. The Columbia, Maryland, neighbourhood of Hobbit's Glen and its street names (including Rivendell Lane, Tooks Way, and Oakenshield Circle) come from Tolkien's works.
In the field of taxonomy, over 80 taxa (genera and species) have been given scientific names honouring, or deriving from, characters or other fictional elements from The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, and other works set in Middle-earth.  Several taxa have been named after the character Gollum (also known as Sméagol), as well as for various hobbits, the small humanlike creatures such as Bilbo and Frodo Baggins. Various elves, dwarves, and other creatures that appear in his writings as well as Tolkien himself have been honoured in the names of several species, including the amphipod Leucothoe tolkieni, and the wasp Shireplitis tolkieni. In 2004, the extinct hominid Homo floresiensis was described, and quickly earned the nickname "hobbit" due to its small size. In 1978, Paleontologist Leigh Van Valen named over 20 taxa of extinct mammals after Tolkien lore in a single paper. In 1999, entomologist Lauri Kaila described 48 new species of Elachista moths and named 37 of them after Tolkien mythology. It has been noted that "Tolkien has been accorded formal taxonomic commemoration like no other author."
Since 2003, The Tolkien Society has organized Tolkien Reading Day, which takes place on 25 March in schools around the world.
In 2013, Pembroke College, Oxford University established an annual lecture on fantasy literature in Tolkien's honour.
Commemorative plaques
Sarehole Mill's blue plaque
The Plough and Harrow's blue plaque
There are seven blue plaques in England that commemorate places associated with Tolkien: one in Oxford, one in Bournemouth, four in Birmingham and one in Leeds. One of the Birmingham plaques commemorates the inspiration provided by Sarehole Mill, near which he lived between the ages of four and eight, while two mark childhood homes up to the time he left to attend Oxford University and the other marks a hotel he stayed at before leaving for France during World War I. The plaque in West Park, Leeds, commemorates the five years Tolkien enjoyed at Leeds as Reader and then Professor of English Language at the University. The Oxford plaque commemorates the residence where Tolkien wrote The Hobbit and most of The Lord of the Rings.

·         On 76 Sandfield Road, Headington, Oxford, his home from 1953 to 1968.
Artwork
In 2012, Tolkien was among the British cultural icons selected by artist Sir Peter Blake to appear in a new version of his most famous artwork—the Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band album cover—to celebrate the British cultural figures of his life that he most admires.
Autographs
Tolkien rarely signed his works, and his autograph has become highly valued by collectors.
Unlike other authors of the genre, Tolkien never favoured signing his works. Owing to his popularity, handsigned copies of his letters or of the first editions of his individual writings have however achieved high values at auctions, and forged autographs may occur on the market. In particular, the signed first hardback edition of The Hobbit from 1937 has reportedly been offered for $85,000. Collectibles also include non-fiction books with hand-written annotations from Tolkien's private library.
Canonization process
On September 2, 2017, the Oxford Oratory, Tolkien's parish church during his time in Oxford, offered its first Mass for the intention of Tolkien's cause for beatification to be opened.
A prayer was written for his cause:
O Blessed Trinity, we thank You for having graced the Church with John Ronald Reuel Tolkien and for allowing the poetry of Your Creation, the mystery of the Passion of Your Son, and the symphony of the Holy Spirit, to shine through him and his sub-creative imagination. Trusting fully in Your infinite mercy and in the maternal intercession of Mary, he has given us a living image of Jesus the Wisdom of God Incarnate, and has shown us that holiness is the necessary measure of ordinary Christian life and is the way of achieving eternal communion with You. Grant us, by his intercession, and according to Your will, the graces we implore [....], hoping that he will soon be numbered among Your saints. Amen.

CHI / Victoria Martinez: Next Chapter

Victoria Martinez, Puzzle Piece 88, hosiery, paint, and thread on found brick, 8"x3.6"x3, 2021
Victoria Martinez: Next Chapter July 10 – August 21, 2021 Opening Reception: Saturday, July 10, 12-4 p.m.

Tiger Strikes Asteroid Chicago and Transmitter, a collaborative curatorial initiative based in Brooklyn, New York, are pleased to present Next Chapter, a solo exhibition featuring work by Victoria Martinez. Next Chapter is part of #ArtistRun2020, a year-long exploration of artist-run spaces organized by Tiger Strikes Asteroid and Trestle Gallery.
Victoria Martinez is an interdisciplinary artist who creates fiber-based projects that extends to installation art and painting. Next Chapter is a site-responsive installation and a journey into Martinez’s next stage of mark-making through abstract paintings and object based works. Her practice is attuned to color, geometry, and found objects, and is rooted in a long-term commitment to observing the urban environment.
Martinez’s work explores landscapes, systems of power, and archiving particular sites as a form of honoring histories. In her abstractions, there are portals of reimagining spaces and memories as well as embracing alternative methods of map making. This is most notable in the material layers and textured textiles that are painted and transformed into an intuitive language.
On view as part of the large-scale installation are cut doorways that reveal a double-sided painting and enter a space of maps reenvisioning quotidian items and the body. Other works explore the grid that is embodied in city streets, murals, and buildings repeating patterns that become timeless. The brick sculptures sourced from a demolition at Dvorak Park in the Pilsen neighborhood, where the artist is originally from, are reconstructed into an archive that salvages the very sites that are being destroyed through gentrification projects in Chicago.
In Next Chapter, Martinez shares her observations of navigating the urban landscape and invites the audience to observe a new body of work based on a walking ritual that informs the industrial materiality and creates a new grounding for the artist.
This project was supported, in part, by a Foundation for Contemporary Arts Emergency Grant and the Hyde Park Art Center Artists Run Chicago Fund.

College Football 2020 Season Week 8 TV Watch Em Ups: worst case scenario colored glasses
Tumblr media
We all should have realized the end was nigh when Wisconsin finally showed up for the season sporting an honest to god four star QB that they had recruited out of high school.
It’s Halloween, there’s a super full extra bloody moon or some such shit, Trevor Lawrence has COVID, the Dodgers won the World Series and Tuesday is election day. All of these things seem foreboding. Oh! And there’s also an asteroid that might hit us on Monday!
Let’s see how many games I write up before the impending doom takes me out this week.
Tumblr media
Saturday, October 31
Matchup                                                         Time (ET)           TV/Mobile
16 Kansas State at West Virginia                 12:00pm              ESPN2
College football is always nonsense but this year is extra nonsensical. Both of these teams kind of suck but one of them is ranked #16. K-State is favored in Morgantown and that just seems iffy.
5 Georgia at Kentucky                                   12:00pm              SECN
We are all shocked that Kentucky isn’t actually any good. Of course they’ll feature in some upset updates this week but that’s just because Kirby Smart sucks.
Purdue at Illinois                                             12:00pm                BTN
The way things are going this could be your last chance to see Rondale Moore as a Purdue Boilermakers so that’s something to watch for.
20 Coastal Carolina at Georgia State            12:00pm             ESPNU
I told you last week that there aren’t ten good teams this year and look at this shit.
Michigan State at 13 Michigan                       12:00pm                FOX
Michigan is favored by 21.5 against a bad Michigan State team. If that’s not the set up for a great punchline, I don’t know what is.
23 Iowa State at Kansas                                  12:00pm                 FS1
How do you even get a 50.5-point line listed? That’s setting aside the oddity of being a 50.5-point home underdog. And all of this is setting aside the near certainty that upwards of 50% of the kids in this game have already tested positive for COVID and just weren’t ever notified because that might make them stop playing football. I’m sure there are kids like that all over the TV landscape today, I just have a gut feeling that these two programs would be among the worst offenders.
Wake Forest at Syracuse                                 12:00pm                ACCN
ACC football, it’s still crappy!
Boston College at 1 Clemson                           12:00pm                  ABC
With Trevor Lawrence up on the shelf this is your first chance to see DJ Uigaleilei actually running the offense. The little bit I saw of him a few weeks ago didn’t inspire my imagination but he is huge and supposedly has quite the strong arm.
UTSA at Florida Atlantic                                    12:00pm               Stadium
The nation’s leading rusher plays for UTSA and his name is Sincere McCormick. I assume he’s actually a time-traveling cowboy.
Temple at Tulane                                                12:00pm                  ESPN+
Two of my favorite flavors of trash. I might not turn on the TV today, though.
Memphis at 7 Cincinnati                                    12:00pm                  ESPN
Part of the reason I’m not sure about my watch ‘em up consumption today is that Miami is off, part is that I won’t be at home most of the day, and part is that I’m afeared Little Ohio State is going to just thump the hell out of our beloved Memphis Tigers. If I check my phone and see this game is close in the third quarter I may feel compelled to check in on it.
UCF at Houston                                                  2:00pm                    ESPN+
For some reason I was thinking Dana Holgorsen had coached Josh Heupel at Oklahoma but Holgo was actually at Texas Tech with Mike Leach after Leach was at Oklahoma. Oh, well. This poison looks sweet to me.
Rice at Southern Miss                                        3:00pm                    ESPN3
My interest in this post is really starting to wane.
Troy at Arkansas State                                       3:00pm                    ESPN3
In a non-pandemic year I’d love this game.
Abilene Christian at Mercer                               3:00pm                    ESPN3
This game should be played in the middle of the night with no crowd and maybe no refs or coaches.
Western Colorado at Stephen F. Austin            3:00pm                     ESPN3
This is a
17 Indiana at Rutgers                                         3:30pm                          FS1
This stupid year. If Rutgers pulls a second straight upset and Sparty somehow beats Michigan, the Rutgers Hauers will probably be ranked next week.
Northwestern at Iowa                                         3:30pm                       ESPN
Iowa, as per usual, has like five guys on their team that will be NFL starters and still aren’t worth watching.
LSU at Auburn                                                     3:30pm                         CBS
It’s LSU and Auburn! Expect this one to go off the rails early and often.
UAB at Louisiana Tech                                       3:30pm                        Stadium
Good weird football but it’s on Stadium so I can’t recommend it.
4 Notre Dame at Georgia Tech                          3:30pm                          ABC
The priest that was at the ACB Super Spreader luncheon is the school president of Notre Dame, right? He probably gave COVID to Trevor Lawrence to give his Fighting Satans a chance in hell against Clemson. What’s that you say? Notre Dame isn’t playing Clemson this week? Of course they aren’t. Notre Dame has this weekend off.
TCU at Baylor                                                      3:30pm                       ESPN2
I just threw my hands up and sighed. I don’t know how to type that feeling other than to describe the physical actions. You know what I mean.
Appalachian State at ULM                                  4:00pm                      ESPNU
I don’t really know.
Virginia Tech at Louisville                                    4:00pm                    ACCN
These were supposed to be “good” ACC teams this year. They are not good teams but either one or both could still turn out to be good in ACC terms.
Texas at 6 Oklahoma State                                 4:00pm                       FOX
Oklahoma State is fools gold in the rankings but that very fast Canadian kid is still fun to watch.
Mississippi at Vanderbilt                                     4:00pm                    SECN
There is nothing fun or interesting about this game.
Missouri Western at Central Arkansas              4:00pm                   ESPN3
These schools are both junior colleges.
25 Boise State at Air Force                                   6:00pm                 CBSSN
I don’t care what you lot say, Boise State football is a net good for the sport and I like it when they’re ranked.
New Mexico at San Jose State                             7:00pm                  FS1
This game probably shouldn’t be played at all but it definitely shouldn’t kick off at 4pm local time.
Mississippi State at 2 Alabama                            7:00pm               ESPN
Bama is going to be on cruise control for the rest of the regular season but that doesn’t mean they won’t win a few games by 50+.
Charlotte at Duke                                                  7:00pm            RSN/ESPN3
Hooray Charlotte, I guess.
Navy at 22 SMU                                                     7:30pm                 ESPN2
I’m really not enjoying Navy’s reliance on throwing the ball this year.
Arkansas at 8 Texas A&M                                     7:30pm                  SECN
Again I say pig sooie.
3 Ohio State at 18 Penn State                              7:30pm                   ABC
There are only a few times where it is generally OK to root for the Buckeyes and playing Penn State is always one of those times.
Missouri at 10 Florida                                          7:30pm                  SECN
I can’t remember if the Gators are wearing cool throwback uniforms this week or if they already did that last week. Somehow my mind is really rejecting this game in particular and I’m not really sure why.
Louisiana at Texas State                                     8:00pm                 ESPNU
This sucks.
15 North Carolina at Virginia                               8:00pm                  ACCN
Wa-hoo-wa imho.
24 Oklahoma at Texas Tech                                8:00pm                   FOX
FOX ads for this week really made it seem like Oklahoma and Oklahoma State were going to play each other but that is very much not the case.
San Diego State at Utah State                           9:30pm                CBSSN
Huge throbbing boner at the thought of this game.
WKU at 11 BYU                                                    10:15pm               ESPN
BYU seems to be legitimately good for the first time in a while. I like that for nostalgia’s sake even though I have always hated BYU.
Nevada at UNLV                                                   10:30pm                 FS1
I think UNLV plays in the Raiders stadium now but they might not yet. I don’t remember. I’d rather this game was still played in UNLV’s shitty old stadium over in Henderson.

‘Eat, Sleep and Play’: Atari Plans to Open 8 Video-Game Themed Hotels
Tumblr media
Atari, the brand known for pioneering video games like Pong, Asteroids and RollerCoaster Tycoon, is taking its business in a new direction: hotels. In a move that underlines the popularity of e-sports, the demands of its growing audience and how video games are escaping the bounds of their consoles, Atari announced on Monday that it would begin construction on its first-ever video-game themed hotel. The company, which was created in 1972, promises a lodging experience that combines a one-of-a-kind video-game themed destination with immersive virtual and augmented reality experiences, according to its statement. The idea came about when GSD Group, a company that works with so-called legacy brands, and Napoleon Smith III, an executive producer of the recent “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” films, began thinking about Atari last fall and eventually presented the company with the idea for a hotel, Shelly Murphy, the founder of GSD Group, said on Tuesday.Ms. Murphy said the plan was to create an “ecosystem” in which players could “eat, sleep and play,” though the size of the hotels would vary depending on the market and region. Some hotel rooms will have a retro video-game theme while others may have a futuristic design, she said, adding, “Our hope is that you come in and never want to leave because there’s a lot of interaction.”Construction of the first hotel, in Phoenix, will begin this fall and is expected to be completed in 18 to 24 months, she said.Additional hotels are planned for Las Vegas; Denver; Chicago; Austin, Texas; Seattle; San Francisco; and San Jose, Calif., the statement said. Some locations will have state-of-the-art venues and studios to accommodate e-sports events. Both GSD Group and Mr. Smith will lead the development and design of the hotels, the statement said. Ms. Murphy said she hoped the hotels would attract both those seeking nostalgia and those competing in the e-sports world.According to the 2019 Global Games Market Report, by the e-sports analytics firm Newzoo, there are, broadly, about 2.5 billion gamers — meaning anyone who plays on a PC, console or mobile device — across the world. The firm estimated that they would spend $152.1 billion on games in 2019, a 9.6 percent increase from the previous year. The report projected that the global games market would grow by billions of dollars over the next few years, rising to nearly $200 billion by 2022.Atari’s move into hospitality follows a trend to build larger venues to accommodate e-sports’ growing audiences. In 2018, the E-Sports Stadium Arlington opened the largest dedicated e-sports facility in North America, a 100,000-square-foot space in Texas with a broadcast studio and an 85-foot-long LED wall. ‘Eat, Sleep and Play’: Atari Plans to Open 8 Video-Game Themed Hotels
The company, which was created in 1972, promises a lodging experience that combines a one-of-a-kind video game-themed destination with immersive virtual and augmented reality experiences, according to its statement.
The idea came about when GSD Group, a company that works with so-called legacy brands, and Napoleon Smith III, an executive producer of the recent “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” films, began thinking about Atari last fall and eventually presented the company with the idea for a hotel, Shelly Murphy, the founder of GSD Group, said on Tuesday.
Ms. Murphy said the plan was to create an “ecosystem” in which players could “eat, sleep and play,” though the size of the hotels would vary depending on the market and region.
Some hotel rooms will have a retro video-game theme while others may have a futuristic design, she said, adding, “Our hope is that you come in and never want to leave because there’s a lot of interaction.”
Construction of the first hotel, in Phoenix, will begin this fall and is expected to be completed in 18 to 24 months, she said.
Additional hotels are planned for Las Vegas; Denver; Chicago; Austin, Tex.; Seattle; San Francisco; and San Jose, Calif., the statement said. Some locations will have state-of-the-art venues and studios to accommodate e-sports events.
Both GSD Group and Mr. Smith will lead the development and design of the hotels, the statement said. Ms. Murphy said she hoped the hotels would attract both those seeking nostalgia and those competing in the e-sports world.
According to the 2019 Global Games Market Report, by the e-sports analytics firm Newzoo, there are, broadly, about 2.5 billion gamers — meaning anyone who plays on a PC, console or mobile device — across the world. The firm estimated that they would spend $152.1 billion on games in 2019, a 9.6 percent increase from the previous year. The report projected that the global games market would grow by billions of dollars over the next few years, rising to nearly $200 billion by 2022.
Atari’s move into hospitality follows a trend to build larger venues to accommodate e-sports’ growing audiences. In 2018, the E-Sports Stadium Arlington opened the largest dedicated e-sports facility in North America, a 100,000-square-foot space in Texas with a broadcast studio and an 85-foot-long LED wall. Construction is also underway for a $50 million, 3,500-seat e-sports arena in Philadelphia, and venues like the Barclays Center in Brooklyn have sold tens of thousands of tickets for e-sports competitions held there.
It’s evident these spaces are in demand. Last July, more than 19,000 people attended the three-day Fortnite World Cup at U.S.T.A. Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Queens, according to the video game’s maker, Epic Games. Prize values have mounted with the events’ popularity: Kyle Giersdorf, who plays as “Bugha,” won the event and a $3 million prize.
Harrison Chang, who plays as “Psalm” and placed second in the competition, said the idea of an Atari hotel was “pretty cool” and he’s glad that the brand is “trying to take e-sports to a more mainstream space.”
Beyond large-scale gaming events, the popularity of immersive video-game settings is also on the rise. This summer, a life-size Super Nintendo World will open at Universal Studios Japan, and there are plans to bring the concept to the United States.
