Various elves, dwarves, and other creatures that appear in his writings as well as Tolkien himself have been honoured in the names of several species, including the amphipod Leucothoe tolkieni, and the wasp Shireplitis tolkieni. In 2004, the extinct hominid Homo floresiensis was described, and quickly earned the nickname "hobbit" due to its small size. In 1978, Paleontologist Leigh Van Valen named over 20 taxa of extinct mammals after Tolkien lore in a single paper. In 1999, entomologist Lauri Kaila described 48 new species of Elachista moths and named 37 of them after Tolkien mythology. It has been noted that "Tolkien has been accorded formal taxonomic commemoration like no other author."

Since 2003, The Tolkien Society has organized Tolkien Reading Day, which takes place on 25 March in schools around the world.

In 2013, Pembroke College, Oxford University established an annual lecture on fantasy literature in Tolkien's honour.

There are seven blue plaques in England that commemorate places associated with Tolkien: one in Oxford, one in Bournemouth, four in Birmingham and one in Leeds. One of the Birmingham plaques commemorates the inspiration provided by Sarehole Mill, near which he lived between the ages of four and eight, while two mark childhood homes up to the time he left to attend Oxford University and the other marks a hotel he stayed at before leaving for France during World War I. The plaque in West Park, Leeds, commemorates the five years Tolkien enjoyed at Leeds as Reader and then Professor of English Language at the University. The Oxford plaque commemorates the residence where Tolkien wrote The Hobbit and most of The Lord of the Rings.

In 2012, Tolkien was among the British cultural icons selected by artist Sir Peter Blake to appear in a new version of his most famous artwork—the Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band album cover—to celebrate the British cultural figures of his life that he most admires.

Autographs

Tolkien rarely signed his works, and his autograph has become highly valued by collectors.

Unlike other authors of the genre, Tolkien never favoured signing his works. Owing to his popularity, handsigned copies of his letters or of the first editions of his individual writings have however achieved high values at auctions, and forged autographs may occur on the market. In particular, the signed first hardback edition of The Hobbit from 1937 has reportedly been offered for $85,000. Collectibles also include non-fiction books with hand-written annotations from Tolkien's private library.

Canonization process

On September 2, 2017, the Oxford Oratory, Tolkien's parish church during his time in Oxford, offered its first Mass for the intention of Tolkien's cause for beatification to be opened.

Tiger Strikes Asteroid Chicago and Transmitter, a collaborative curatorial initiative based in Brooklyn, New York, are pleased to present Next Chapter, a solo exhibition featuring work by Victoria Martinez. Next Chapter is part of #ArtistRun2020, a year-long exploration of artist-run spaces organized by Tiger Strikes Asteroid and Trestle Gallery.

Victoria Martinez is an interdisciplinary artist who creates fiber-based projects that extends to installation art and painting. Next Chapter is a site-responsive installation and a journey into Martinez’s next stage of mark-making through abstract paintings and object based works. Her practice is attuned to color, geometry, and found objects, and is rooted in a long-term commitment to observing the urban environment.

Martinez’s work explores landscapes, systems of power, and archiving particular sites as a form of honoring histories. In her abstractions, there are portals of reimagining spaces and memories as well as embracing alternative methods of map making. This is most notable in the material layers and textured textiles that are painted and transformed into an intuitive language.

On view as part of the large-scale installation are cut doorways that reveal a double-sided painting and enter a space of maps reenvisioning quotidian items and the body. Other works explore the grid that is embodied in city streets, murals, and buildings repeating patterns that become timeless. The brick sculptures sourced from a demolition at Dvorak Park in the Pilsen neighborhood, where the artist is originally from, are reconstructed into an archive that salvages the very sites that are being destroyed through gentrification projects in Chicago.

In Next Chapter, Martinez shares her observations of navigating the urban landscape and invites the audience to observe a new body of work based on a walking ritual that informs the industrial materiality and creates a new grounding for the artist.

This project was supported, in part, by a Foundation for Contemporary Arts Emergency Grant and the Hyde Park Art Center Artists Run Chicago Fund.

Artist Bio

Victoria Martinez was born in 1987 in Chicago, IL. She received her B.F.A. from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design in 2010 and an M.F.A. From Yale University School of Art in 2020. Martinez has exhibited nationally and internationally including the Yale University Art Gallery, the National Museum of Mexican Art, the Loyola University Museum of Art, and her work has been critically appraised in Poetry Foundation Magazine and The University of Chicago Press. She is a recipient of the Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript Library Research Fellowship from Yale University, Michigan Avenue Galleries Grant from the Chicago Cultural Center, and an Enrichment Grant from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago where she currently teaches in the Fiber and Materials Studies Department. Upcoming projects include a solo exhibition at the San Jose Museum of Quilts and Textiles in California, and an art feature in New American Paintings.

Next Chapter is curated by Eva Mayhabal Davis (b. Toluca, Mexico). Eva is a collaborative curator working with exhibition spaces and publications and is currently a Co-Director at Transmitter.

College Football 2020 Season Week 8 TV Watch Em Ups: worst case scenario colored glasses

We all should have realized the end was nigh when Wisconsin finally showed up for the season sporting an honest to god four star QB that they had recruited out of high school.

It’s Halloween, there’s a super full extra bloody moon or some such shit, Trevor Lawrence has COVID, the Dodgers won the World Series and Tuesday is election day. All of these things seem foreboding. Oh! And there’s also an asteroid that might hit us on Monday!

Let’s see how many games I write up before the impending doom takes me out this week.

I’m sure there are kids like that all over the TV landscape today, I just have a gut feeling that these two programs would be among the worst offenders.

Cinequest Film & VR Festival Passes Now Available, VR Award Winners Revealed

Taking place at the end of the month in the annual Cinequest Film & VR Festival, held in in San Jose and Redwood City, California. The event is set to feature a massive selection of virtual reality (VR) workshops, panels and cinema programmes, as well as awards, the winners of which have now been announced. 

The Cinequest VR Awards cover 19 categories from Best Overall VR Experience and Best VR Documentary to Best VR Sound Design and the Visionary Award. The awards will be presented as part of the Closing Night festivities for the Cinequest Film & VR Festival on Sunday, 12th March.

For those interested in going to the festival passes come in three varieties: Film Lover, Maverick and VIP Access, priced at $165 USD, $250 and $500 respectively. While each will offer varying access to the event, if you want to see any of the VR related programmes or workshops you’ll need to be a VIP.

“Representing the epicenter of virtual reality, Cinequest VR exists to meet current needs and celebrate this exploding industry. Our Board feels VR looks like the inception of TV. No matter how many boxes people had in their living rooms, if all they could see was static or off-putting programs, it’s doubtful TV would have succeeded.
