what's the rarest Creature you've encountered? doesn't have to be a frog but any kind of amphibian or perhaps even a non-amphibian

I saw two Astrochelys yniphora specimens in the wild in 2006, while I was in Madagascar on my first trip with my father and a group of other herp enthusiasts. At the time, there were an estimated 800 specimens in the wild. By 2008, the population had dropped to ca 400 individuals, and as of 2018 the species has been considered functionally extinct in the wild, according to Pedrono & Clausen (2018) and the Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust.

I think this is very probably the rarest creature I have seen in the wild. I guess I have seen some animals in zoos that are also extinct in the wild, or close to it, but I think that doesn't really count. I have also collected the only known specimens of quite a number of frog and reptile species, but those species are probably mostly fine in terms of population numbers, just no-one has checked. And I have seen and handled quite a large number of specimens of extinct species at museums, but that's a very different thing, of course.

Chi come me vive a stretto contatto con la natura sa bene che ci troviamo in un punto critico e di non ritorno, ma nonostante tutto se ne parla e si fa troppo poco. Una minaccia così grande come i cambiamenti climatici e il surriscaldamento globale che davvero minacciano l'esistenza di un intero pianeta vengono ignorati dagli uomini e dai governi, i quali non fanno altro che pensare agli interessi economici e alle guerre… E mi chiedo perché per un virus (neanche lontanamente paragonabile a ciò) si è fatto molto di più mandando in tilt l’intera terra? Ho deciso così di realizzare questo dipinto cercando di enfatizzare ciò che ho sempre rappresentato nei miei quadri, primariamente nella collezione “Colors of birds”, incentrata sul riscaldamento globale e l’estinzione. Per rappresentare la "NOSTRA" Terra ho riunito tre esemplari appartenenti a continenti differenti. In volo il Quetzal, uccello simbolo delle foreste del Centro America, viene illustrato in fiamme e urlante, proprio come le nostre foreste negli ultimi anni. La testuggine di Vomere (Astrochelys yniphora) endemica del Madagascar è in grave pericolo di estinzione e per quanto sia una specie terreste viene raffigurata in acqua, rappresentando il suo declino. Sul suo carapace ho rappresentato la Goura Victoria, un columbide della Nuova Guinea che, con la sua cresta con rari ciuffi bianchi (come i ghiacciai) e il suo azzurro, blu e rosso porpora rappresenta gli oceani, ormai inquinati. Sepang, Malaisie, 15 mai 2017 - Cornes rhino, échelles pangolin et maintenant 330 tortues malgaches en danger critique: les douaniers de l'aéroport international malaisien de Kuala Lumpur (KLIA) ont fait une troisième capture extraordinaire de la vie sauvage trafiquée d'Afrique en seulement Plus d'un mois. Dimanche, les officiers ont confisqué cinq cartons en carton contenant chacun un bagage, contenant entre eux 330 tortues à danger critique d'extinction - cinq Tortues Plougshare Astrochelys yniphora et 325 Tortues Radiatives Astrochelys radiata qui ont été introduites en contrebande de Madagascar sur un vol Etihad Airways via Abu Dhabi. Les deux espèces sont entièrement protégées à Madagascar et énumérées à l'Annexe I de la Convention sur le commerce international des espèces de faune et de flore sauvages menacées d'extinction (CITES), ce qui signifie que tout commerce commercial international est interdit. Le 7 avril, les douanes malaisiennes ont saisi 18 cornes de rhinocéros du Mozambique sur un vol de Qatar Airways qui a transité Doha en direction de Kuala Lumpur. Le 1er mai, l'agence a saisi 408 kg d'écailles de pangolin du Ghana sur un vol d'Emirates Airways qui a transité Dubaï. Le 3 mai, 304 kg d'écailles de pangolin de la République du Congo ont encore été transportés sur un vol d'Emirates Airways qui a traversé le Kenya et a transité Dubaï avant d'être saisi à Kuala Lumpur.

La dernière saisie représente également la troisième fois cette année que la Malaisie a été liée à une saisie de la Tortue Ploughshare, l'un des reptiles les plus rares du monde. La semaine dernière, un homme malaisien a été pris à l'aéroport international de Taoyuan à Taiwan pour avoir tenté de transiger en contrebande de trois tortues de Ploughshare de la Malaisie à Taiwan. En mars, une tortue Plougshare a été parmi d'autres espèces découvertes à Taiwan dans un envoi de chaussures de Penang, en Malaisie. "Il est essentiel que les tortues saisies hautement menacées, en particulier les tortues de Ploughshare, soient rapatriées à Madagascar et réintroduites suite aux protocoles appropriés pour augmenter la population sauvage là-bas", a déclaré le Dr Chris R. Shepherd, Directeur régional de TRAFFIC en Asie du Sud-Est. "L'avidité irréfléchie de ceux qui achètent ces animaux conduit les tortues de Ploughshare à l'extinction et nous encourageons les autorités à aller non seulement aux trafiquants, mais aussi à ceux qui les achètent." A four-month survey by the wildlife-monitoring group TRAFFIC in 2015 found that 4,985 individuals from 65 different tortoise and freshwater turtle species were on display for sale at pet stores, animal markets, tropical fish markets and reptile expos in Jakarta. Fifteen of the 65 species observed during the survey were native to Indonesia, only three of which were included in the country’s list of protected animals, according to the report published on March 26. Ngày rùa thế giới được khởi xướng từ năm 2000 nhằm nâng cao hiểu biết của con người về loài rùa cũng như khuyến khích mọi người có hành động để giúp loài này sinh tồn và phát triển.
