The Romanian / Norwegian / Greek / Middle East + European Tour version is really starting to hit many countries and cities now. Along with some photos of the current cast (from the respective webpages I have linked to underneath), here's a complete overview to where it has played so far, and where it will play in 2024-2025 (*):
JAN 2015: Teatrul National de Opereta, Budapest, ROMANIA. This was the prototype, directed by Stephen Barlow and designed by Andrew Riley. Leading trio was Adrian Nour, Irina Ioana Baiant and Florian Ristei, and it was performed in Romanian.
SEPT 2018 - MARCH 2019: Folketeateret, Oslo, NORWAY. This was a much updated version of the original Romanian production, with new costumes, and revamped sets and effects. Leading trio was Espen Grjotheim, Mira Ormala / Astrid Giske and Carl Lindquist, and it was performed in Norwegian.
JAN - MAR 2020: Thessaloniki Concert Hall and Christmas Theatre in Athens, GREECE. This was pretty much the Oslo production, but with some changes for tourability. From Greece on it has only been performed in English, regardless of the location. The original leading trio in Greece was Ben Forster, Celinde Schoenmaker / Amy Manford and Nadim Naaman. The production closed earlier than announced due to Covid.
FEB - MARCH 2023: Christmas Theatre in Athens and Thessaloniki Concert Hall, GREECE. Back in Greece, still in English, still an international cast, even more set and costume changes. This time the leading trio was Tim Howar, Harriet Jones / Georgia Wilkinson and Nadim Naaman.
OCT - DEC 2023: The Arena, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Continuing most of what was the case in Greece, except Nadim Naaman took over the role of the Phantom from Tim Howar, and Dougie Carter took over as Raoul. Was now dubbed "The Middle East Tour". It was the first time a full-scale production of Phantom of the Opera was done in Saudi Arabia.
FEB - MARCH 2024: Dubai Opera, Dubai. Same cast and overall set-up as Riyadh. This production followed in the footsteps of the World Tour (original version), visiting Dubai in 2019.
APRIL 2024: National Palace of Culture, Sofia, BULGARIA. Same cast and overall set-up as Riyadh and Dubai. This was, I think, the first time a city has housed two different non-replica productions. Not at the same time, mind you, as this version touring has meant the local productions are now allowed to perform for some time. This was at least what was announced from the producers in Bulgaria, Serbia and the Czech Republic. Curious.
AUG - SEPT. 2024: National Palace of Culture, Sofia, BULGARIA. The production has announced its return to Sofia this autumn. This due to the sold-out initial run.
OCT 2024: Sagros Campo Pequeno, Lisbon, PORTUGAL. The production has announced a run there from October 15-27, 2024. A concert version has previously been performed in Portugal, but it will be the first time a full-scale production is done.
NOV - DEC 2024: Musical Theater Basel, Switzerland. The production has announced a run there from Nov. 6 to Dec 22, 2024. The original Swiss production 1995-1997 did a hardcore thing of perfoming in both German and English. It will therefore not be the first time POTO is performed there, nor the first time it is performed in English. But it is the first time this exact version visits, and the 1995-1997 one was the original version.
FEB - MARCH 2025: Stadsschouwburg, Antwerp, Belgium. The production has announced a run there from Feb. 6 to March 7, 2025. The original Belgian production ran from 1999-2000, and was performed in the local language, but it will be the first time it is performed in English. It will as such also be the 10th anniversary for this specific touring version, as it premiered in Romania in January 2015.
MARCH 2025: Kongresove Centrum, Prague, Czech Republic. The production has announced a run there from March 19-27, 2025. This means the local production 'Fantom Opery' at Goja Music Hall has been paused. According to the official website the Phantom will be Nadim Naaman, the role of Christine will be shared between Georgia Wilkinson and Bridget Costello, and Raoul will be Dougie Carter.
(*) More dates will likely follow. Kuwait was announced some time back, but cannot be found anywhere now. Also, the local Serbian production announced a break because another version was visiting, so I won't be surprised if Belgrade is added to the list later on.

I'm interested to know whether you came to enjoy Greek music during your many years living in Greece. Do you have any favorite Greek artists or songs that you'd be willing to share? I always enjoy your posts about Greece and all your travel stories for that matter 🙂
Dear Greek Music Anon,
This is a beautiful question and you have made my day: thank you for asking and come back whenever you want, whoever you are - you are always, always welcome!
If you think Greek music is just this...
youtube
... then you are touristically biased, Anon. And that is ok, to some extent and not really your fault, because this is exactly what they will have you listen to, when you make the childish mistake to book that Greek Evening on your cruise or tour. For some unfathomable reason, this is what they imagine foreign guests should be shown. But then there is music for their and their friends' souls, something completely different and a whole universe to discover.
This is Greek music to me, Anon:
youtube
The best Greek female voice of all times (Callas does not count, for innumerable reasons, we do not discuss a Goddess), Our Lady of the Rebetiko: Haris (it means Grace, by the way) Alexiou. A true Dame Blanche, witty, warm and rightfully worshipped. When I was first introduced to her, I was so moved I almost couldn't open my mouth in awe. I was stupidly glued to my French formulaic praise and I remember I just mumbled something along the lines of 'eh merde alors, fuck it, I just wanted you to know that to me, you are not only the voice of my teenage years: you are the Voice of Time itself'. She laughed and the rest is, as they say, history.
This happened in November 2018, after one of her concerts at the Gazarte hall in Athens: a dificult comeback for her, after a cancer scare. We were very moved and fangirling AF, my Culture and Press colleague (remember her from the Mycenae story? Greek music made us instant friends - I was the only one to know what she was talking about) and I:
Tumblr media
I have blurred my former colleague's face. I am not sure she wants to be seen on Tumblr, LOL. And see, Anon? I really look like an overwhelmed twat, in this pic. Chances are I'd look the same at Landcon 2025 (what was the last price, 149 euros? Sweet Baby Jesus, the results).
Haroula's one time lover (speculation is still rife and many shipped those two during the late Eighties and early Nineties, unaware it was completely true) and probably the Greek equivalent of Sinatra is George Dalaras. A., my colleague, is absolutely nuts about him and as such a big, boisterous presence in this man's fandom. She follows him just about everywhere (I didn't understand her and residually still don't, to be honest), so it's not a surprise I quickly got to meet the guy, after one of his extraordinary stunts at the Klimataria, a well-known tavern and rebetiko joint smack dab in downtown Athens (I think it was one week before I met and befriended Haroula, funny that):
Tumblr media
Now, he looks like a banker. But back in 1993, he looked and sang like this:
youtube
This is his greatest hit, if you ask me. Βαμμένα Κόκκινα Μαλλιά (Dyed Red Hair) is the score of a very successful Greek TV series during the Nineties (don't ask, it's very syrupy) and legit one of the most beautiful Greek love songs ever written. But unlike A, I am completely chilled as far as Dalaras is concerned and I think it showed, when we met. He offered an autograph and I said no, just because I am completely dumb, like that. The trouble is, he gently remembered me and he always brought it up every single time we met (at a couple of events and receptions) - how's that for totally embarrassing, eh?
And then you have the opera divas, among which is my dear friend Sonia Theodoridou, one of the best Greek sopranos after Callas. Sonia came back to Athens after a rich career in Germany right in the middle of the economic crisis turmoil. Things were not easy for her and I have to say, bless her heart, she is not an easy person, either (which opera singer is, mind you?). But her voice is magical and she loves to play with it. See what she can do with a really meh song, written and successfully performed by Pandelis Pandelidis, the one-time local Justin Bieber (he unfortunately died in 2016, in a motorcycle accident):
youtube
The strange instrument you see in the clip is a Cretan lyra, by the way. I hate it with a passion. But I still love Sonia, no matter what.
We shared a lot of things, Sonia and I. Here is our first pic, together with her ex-husband, Theodoros (still a friend):
Tumblr media
These people are those I personally know and like/love. I haven't told you anything yet about the formidable, mythical Maria Farantouri, Mikis Theodorakis' muse or Vicky Moscholiou, another diva (different niche, though). Nothing about Miltos Paschalidis, either, the mathematician turned singer or Alkinoos Ioannidis, perhaps the best Cypriot voice after George Michael. The only reason I won't, for now at least, is that I don't really like mammoth posts. And this is quickly turning into one of those.
But I digressed. You asked me about my favorite Greek song, Anon. It's Manos Hatzidakis' Kemal - a masterpiece with a strong, subversive political message in the guise of an Oriental cruel parable:
youtube
Do I know it by heart? Of course I do (and I always, always cry, because I am a sentimental idiot, like that). Singing along with the locals at concerts, in taverns, in your car, on that bus ride, is a mandatory part of the Greek experience. And the most heartfelt homage you can pay to all those wonderful men and women who make our world a brighter, better place.

Discovering Thessaloniki: Greece's Hidden Jewel
Tucked away yet thriving with vibrant life, Thessaloniki, Greece’s illustrious second city, is a hidden gem awaiting discovery. This captivating metropolis harmoniously melds ancient roots with a modern pulse, embodying a unique blend of history, culture, and scenic coastal views. For travellers eager to journey across epochs, Thessaloniki is a destination that impresses at every turn. Thessaloniki deserves a prime spot on your travel itinerary and the must-see sights within its storied bounds.
Why Visit Thessaloniki
Though often eclipsed by the capital, Athens, Thessaloniki offers an unparalleled Greek experience without the crush of crowds. Its allure extends from enthralling archaeological relics to vibrant markets and scenic waterfronts. Whether you’re a history buff, a foodie, or simply looking for a new destination, Thessaloniki has something special for everyone.
Things to do in Thessaloniki
Explore the Iconic White TowerDominating Thessaloniki’s skyline, the White Tower stands as an enduring symbol of the city. Once a fortification and prison, it now operates as a museum chronicling Thessaloniki’s complex history. A climb to the summit rewards with sweeping panoramas of the cityscape and the Thermaic Gulf.
Stroll Through Aristotelous SquareAristotelous Square forms the energetic heart of Thessaloniki, pulsating with life at all hours. Encircled by quaint cafes, boutique shops, and enticing eateries, the square offers an ideal starting point to explore. Take an unhurried walk, savour a Greek coffee, and immerse yourself in the lively surroundings.
Explore the Rotonda and Arch of GaleriusThessaloniki’s ancient core shines through at the Rotonda and the Arch of Galerius. The Rotonda, originally a Roman mausoleum for emperor Galerius, later transformed into a religious site, mesmerises with its intricate mosaics. Nearby, the Arch of Galerius, constructed in the 4th century, is a testament to Roman victories and artistry.
Venture into Ano Poli (Upper Town)Ano Poli, Thessaloniki’s historic old quarter, offers an evocative glimpse into traditional Greek life. This area brims with Byzantine relics, Ottoman architecture, and scenic pathways. Quaint tavernas line the streets, inviting you to indulge in authentic Greek delicacies amidst storied surrounds.
Saunter Along Thessaloniki's WaterfrontThe waterfront of Thessaloniki is the perfect venue for a serene evening walk. Spanning five kilometres, this promenade extends from the White Tower to the Thessaloniki Concert Hall, replete with green spaces, cafes, and resting areas. Witnessing the sun’s descent over the Aegean Sea from here is nothing short of magical.
Culinary Delights of Thessaloniki
As Greece’s culinary epicentre, Thessaloniki boasts an array of local flavours that will tantalise any palate. Here are some essentials to sample:
Bougatsa – A versatile pastry, either sweet or savoury , filled with custard or cheese – perfect for an indulgent breakfast.
Souvlaki – Thessaloniki’s rendition of Greece’s beloved meat skewers, renowned for its rich and distinctive seasoning.
Koulouri – A simple yet satisfying sesame-crusted bread ring, often available from street vendors across the city.
Ideal Seasons to Experience Thessaloniki
For an enjoyable exploration, consider visiting in spring (April to June) or autumn (September to November). During these times, the climate is pleasantly mild, and the tourist influx is lower, allowing you to savour Thessaloniki’s charm at your leisure.
Navigating Thessaloniki
Thessaloniki’s extensive bus network makes urban exploration straightforward. Walking, however, is highly recommended for those keen to immerse themselves in the city’s atmosphere, particularly in the bustling centre. For those inclined to venture beyond, renting a vehicle is ideal for uncovering hidden locales that lie beyond the well-trodden paths.
Whether you arrive with a keen sense of history, a love for Mediterranean flavours, or a yearning for novel destinations, Thessaloniki awaits, ready to enchant and inspire.

9:34 AM EDT June 29, 2024:
Pink Floyd - "A Pillow Of Winds" From the album Meddle (October 30, 1971)
Last song scrobbled from iTunes at Last.fm
★★★★
From the "Everything's Amazing, Nobody's Happy" file . . . . Ever since I got III (or Jr. Jr., as I sometimes call him) with his fancy voice over software, I've gotten an intermittent kick from his fairly frequent misprononunced bandnames and titles. I've got lots of Les Baxter loaded up into the library, so it's pretty commonplace for me to hear it give Mr. Baxter's first name the French pronunciation, Les as in Les Halles or Les Miserables. The instrumental postrock band from Athens who had both the good humor and the audacity to name one of their songs "Synchronicity III" isn't Maserati to my poor benighted iPod, it's mah-SAIR-a-TEE, the stress accents exactly backwards from what they should be, and the S as in Sam and not as in . . . well, Maserati.
It's something I'm used to by now, and I find the software's flaws more amusing than annoying, but this morning while driving into work, though it absolutely aced "Hibou, Anemone and Bear," there issued forth from his digital lips a mispronunciation of a somewhat more mundane if still somewhat poetic title that got me thinking. The song playing was "A Pillow of Winds," which I love for David Gilmour's preternaturally trippy voice and the way it descends dizzily when singing "Green fields, a cold rain/ Is falling in a golden dawn." But the name of the tune if not the band and the album escaped me for some reason, so I hit the voice over button, there, as I drove down NW 37th Avenue in the battle-scarred Toyota, and III told me that the song was "A Pillow of Winds," as in winds-your-watch. This bugs me more than usual, and I'll tell you why. It's the word before the mispronounced one that gets me going, because the word "of" is NOT mispronounced. So, clearly, some programmer went in there and put in a line of code which says that the two letters O and F next to each other but off by themselves will be pronounced "uhhv." Good so far. But "of," in addition to always being pronounced with an "uhh" and with a "v," will also ALWAYS be used ahs a preposition--and therefore will always take an object after itself. And the word that Roger Waters spells as W-I-N-D-S is only an object if it's pronounced with the short i. Does it seem too much to expect this voice over software--this CHEAP voiceover software, mind you--to keep track of parts of speech in addition to the sounds of letters? No, I don't think it does. Maybe in Spanish, everything's phonetic, but in English, sound and meaning ebb and flow in concert with each other. Meaning determines sound and vice-versa. So, if you're trying to actually reflect the language that both Pink Floyd et moi customarily work in, and you're already putting in a subroutine that tells Jr. Jr. how to pronounce his fucking prepositions, I figure you can damn well include a library of nouns to use as their objects, at the very least. </rant> the book falls to the floor

Francis Hall Johnson (March 12, 1888 – April 30, 1970) was a composer and arranger of African American spiritual music. He is one of a group, including Harry T. Burleigh, R. Nathaniel Dett, and Eva Jessye, who elevated the African American spiritual to an art form, comparable in its musical sophistication to the compositions of European Classical composers.
He received an extensive education. He attended the private, all-Black Knox Institute and earned a BA from Allen University. He attended Atlanta University, the Juilliard School, the Hahn School of Music, and the University of Pennsylvania.
As a boy, he was tutored on piano by his older sister, and he taught himself to play the violin after hearing a violin recital given by Joseph Henry Douglass, grandson of Frederick Douglass.
His debut as a professional violinist occurred in a concert in New York in 1910. He went on to play the violin and viola professionally, including in the orchestra for the 1921 musical, Shuffle Along. He played in the orchestra led by James Reese Europe as it accompanied Vernon and Irene Castle on tour, and he played with the New York Syncopated Orchestra, led by Will Marion Cook in 1918.
He was posthumously honored for his work in films by being elected to the Black Filmmakers Hall of Fame.
A bust of Johnson by Minna Harkavy was shown at an exhibition at the Moscow Museum of Western Art and was bought by the Pushkin Museum in Moscow.
The Philadelphia Academy of Music recognized him with an honorary doctorate.
His photograph, taken by Sidney Cowell in 1960, is included in the National Portrait Gallery of the United States.
In September 2020, the Athens Cultural Affairs Commission included him in the first ten inductees of the Athens Music Walk of Fame installed downtown, alongside other, more contemporary honorees such as R.E.M., The B-52s, and Vic Chesnutt. A plaque mounted on the sidewalk and a mobile app beacon honor his career. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence

Finally, the Sea
It was my day off on Saturday, and after a nice coffee and people watching at the farmer's market in the morning, I took the metro to the end of the line so that I could look at the sea. After being here for about two weeks it felt overdue to get close to the water.
Tumblr media
Walking and talking (this time on the phone) is one of my favorite things to do in Athens, and somehow I logged over 12 miles without really noticing it.
Sunday morning I tried to rest in the apartment and got some light chores done. I find the stretches of down time during this program, which I usually approach with optimism about "rest" to be some of the most challenging moments. I've grappled with this feeling at home for years, but without the endless available tasks of life, or a studio available to me here, it's starker. In the afternoon, I met up with Alexandra to go to our women's self defense class at a Bruce Lee themed martial arts studio. I'm meant to be trying all new things in this fellowship, but I'm also full of surprises myself. Back home I co-founded a self defense training group for Asian American femmes called Sisters in Self Defense. This class was very different from what we do, and taught in Greek, so it was still a novel experience. Alexandra told me about attacks on women in areas where she's lived and how that's affected her life, and we had a lot of fun training together. And, I learned a new move I really liked that I might teach when I lead my next class.
Tumblr media
After self defense, I went on to the Megaron Concert Hall to a screening of a documentary about Greece in the interwar period between 1922-1940. Readers of this blog will know that I've been learning a lot about this time period! It was an unusual context to watch a historical documentary with the well dressed upper crust attendees in a packed-out massive theater. The film presented a lot of primary source photos and moving images of Athens from that time period of great societal change. As I write this, Donald Trump is being inaugurated as president of the United States again. Thinking about political polarization and societal unrest from the distance of time and so many miles from home, in some ways makes everything we are going through now seems like a normal, if still harrowing part of humans doing what we do, and in some ways makes me feel like we are inching closer and closer to the edge of a precipice that we've been flirting with for centuries.
Today I had another helpful therapy session, and then walked over to a shop near Tind's silkscreening studio to buy some ingredients for our lunch: feta cheese, capers, and olives. We met up and hiked to the farthest point on Philopappos Hill where he taught me how to make a field worker's style meal. You first rehydrate a special kind of dried bread, then add crushed tomato, feta, olive oil, and if you're fancy, some dill, rocket greens, capers, and foraged wild green onion. Mix it and let it marinate for a bit but not so much that the bread loses its crunch, and then enjoy. Since my flamenco class tonight was cancelled at the last minute, I'll leave you with some photos of our meal. I'm getting ready to leave early tomorrow morning to catch the ferry to Hydra.

The Anxious States of America (USA Today) By more than 2-1, Americans tell the USA TODAY/Suffolk University Poll that the country is headed in the wrong direction. Only half of likely voters, 49%, are casting a ballot based mostly on what they hope their candidate would do if elected. Almost as many, 41%, say their vote is based on what they fear the other candidate would do, given the chance. A sense of alarm seems to be the sentiment that most unites us: the Anxious States of America. Yet in fundamental ways, Americans continue to express an abiding faith in the nation’s resilience and a buoyant optimism about what’s ahead. By a margin of more than 6 to 1—81% to 13%—Americans say they have “hope for the future of the country,” a view that stretches across lines of gender, race and political party. That said, there is even broader agreement about what makes us feel hopeless. “Politicians” lead the list among Democrats, Republicans and independents. Close behind, across the board, is “increasing polarization and lack of respect for others’ opinions.”
Second Apparent Assassination Attempt on Trump Prompts Alarm Abroad (NYT) In the nine years since Donald J. Trump entered American politics, the global perception of the United States has been shaken by the image of a fractured, unpredictable nation. First one, then a second apparent attempt on the former president’s life have accentuated international concerns, raising fears of violent turmoil spiraling toward civil war. Keir Starmer, the British prime minister, has said he is “very worried” and “deeply troubled” by what the F.B.I. said was an attempt to kill Mr. Trump at his Florida golf course, fewer than 50 days before the presidential election and two months after a bullet bloodied the ear of Mr. Trump during a campaign rally in Pennsylvania. In Mexico, where elections this year were the most violent in the country’s recent history, with 41 candidates and aspirants for public office assassinated, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said in a post on X, formerly Twitter: “Even though what happened is still unclear, we regret the violence against former President Donald Trump. The path is democracy and peace.” At a time of wars in Europe and the Middle East and widespread global insecurity as China and Russia assert the superiority of their autocratic models, American precariousness weighs heavily.
You’re not imagining it: Donald Trump and Kamala Harris aren’t talking about the federal deficit. (WSJ) The two major-party presidential candidates were both part of administrations that added to the deficit, and neither is likely to do a 180, if elected. The vice president and the former president want to protect the biggest drivers of rising spending--Social Security and Medicare--and extend trillions of dollars in tax cuts. This year’s budget deficit is on track to top $1.9 trillion, or more than 6% of economic output, a threshold reached only around World War II, the 2008 financial crisis and the pandemic.
As Jimmy Carter nears his 100th birthday, a musical gala celebrates the ‘rock-and-roll president’ (AP) A range of stars from the stage, screen and sport paid tribute Tuesday to former President Jimmy Carter ahead of his 100th birthday, the eclectic lineup meant to highlight the 39th president’s emphasis on human rights and his love of music as a universal language. “Everyone here is making history,” Jason Carter, the former president’s grandson, told more than 4,000 people who filled Atlanta’s Fox Theatre to toast the longest-lived U.S. executive in history. “This is the first time people have come together to celebrate the 100th birthday of an American president.” Tuesday’s run of show assembled artists as varied as India Arie singing R&B and soul draped in a resplendent purple gown; the B-52s, formed in Athens, Georgia, singing “Love Shack” and projecting psychedelic imagery across the concert hall; and the Atlanta Symphony Chamber Chorus bringing a classical and patriotic repertoire. Carter remains in hospice care at his home in Plains, Georgia.
Colombia’s president says attack on army base ‘practically ends’ peace talks with ELN rebels (AP) An attack on a military base in eastern Colombia killed two soldiers and injured at least 21, Colombia’s military said on Tuesday, as tensions escalate between Colombia’s government and one of the nation’s largest remaining rebel groups. Colombia’s military blamed the National Liberation Army for the attack, with President Gustavo Petro hinting late on Tuesday that the attack will lead to a suspension, or a cancellation of peace talks with the rebel group. “This is an attack that practically closes a peace process, with blood,” Petro said.
March for Bolivia’s ex-President Morales turns violent, as political crisis escalates (AP) Thousands of anti-government demonstrators marching in support of Bolivia’s former President Evo Morales clashed on Tuesday with counterprotesters blocking their way, a stark sign of an escalating power struggle in the volatile Andean nation. In his most brazen show of force yet against current President Luis Arce, Morales sent word to his followers to mobilize what he called a “March to Save Bolivia,” a 190-kilometer (118 mile)-trek from the small village of Caracollo to the capital, La Paz, denouncing the government of his protege-turned-bitter rival. Morales, a former coca grower, has retained significant support among poor and Indigenous Bolivians despite his resignation in 2019 amid mass protests over his disrupted re-election.
Brexit deal impact in UK is worsening, warn economists (BBC) Brexit red tape on British businesses has caused goods trade between the UK and EU to slump and the problem is getting worse, a study has warned. Many smaller UK producers have given up exporting small amounts to the EU after facing more rules and regulations, a report by Aston University Business School has found. Between 2021 and 2023, the study calculated that UK goods exports to the EU were down 27% and imported goods were 32% lower than where they would have been had Brexit not happened. The report said that the “negative impacts of the [trade agreement] have intensified over time, with 2023 showing more pronounced trade declines than previous years”. Jun Du, one of the authors of the research, told the BBC there had been an increase in regulations such as “product standards, safety checks and labeling requirements”. “While these measures do protect consumers, competition and the environment, they also increasingly bring difficulties and costs for the traders,” she said.
Ukrainian drone attack triggers earthquake-sized blast at arsenal in Russia's Tver region (Reuters) A large-scale Ukrainian drone attack on Russia triggered an earthquake-sized blast at a major arsenal in the Tver region on Wednesday, forcing the evacuation of a nearby town, war bloggers and some media reported. Unverified video and images on social media showed a huge ball of flame blasting high into the night sky and multiple detonations thundering across a lake about 380 km (240 miles) west of Moscow. NASA satellites picked up intense heat sources emanating from an area of about 14 square kilometres (5 square miles) at the site in the early hours and earthquake monitoring stations picked up what sensors thought was a small earthquake in the area.
One Million Are Now Dead or Injured in the Russia-Ukraine War (WSJ) The number of Ukrainians and Russians killed or wounded in the grinding 2½-year war has reached roughly one million, a staggering toll that two countries struggling with shrinking prewar populations will pay far into the future. Determining the exact number of dead and wounded in the conflict has been difficult, with Russia and Ukraine declining to release official estimates or, at times, putting out figures that are widely mistrusted. A confidential Ukrainian estimate from earlier this year put the number of dead Ukrainian troops at 80,000 and the wounded at 400,000, according to people familiar with the matter. Western intelligence estimates of Russian casualties vary, with some putting the number of dead as high as nearly 200,000 and wounded at around 400,000.
Sri Lanka’s plantation workers live on the margins. But politicians still want their votes (AP) Whoever Sri Lanka’s next president is, Muthuthevarkittan Manohari isn’t expecting much to change in her daily struggle to feed the four children and elderly mother with whom she lives in a dilapidated room in a tea plantation. Both leading candidates in Saturday’s presidential election are promising to give land to the country’s hundreds of thousands of plantation workers, but Manohari says she’s heard it all before. Sri Lanka’s plantation workers are a long-marginalized group who frequently live in dire poverty, but they can swing elections by voting as a bloc. Mahohari and her family are descended from Indian indentured laborers who were brought in by the British during colonial rule to work on plantations that grew first coffee, and later tea and rubber. Those crops are still Sri Lanka’s leading foreign exchange earners.
Casualties in Myanmar push Southeast Asia’s death toll from Typhoon Yagi past 500 (AP) Floods and landslides in Myanmar triggered by last week’s Typhoon Yagi and seasonal monsoon rains have claimed at least 226 lives, with 77 people missing, state-run media reported Tuesday. The new figures push the total number of dead in Southeast Asia from the storm past 500. The accounting of casualties has been slow, in part due to communication difficulties with the affected areas. Myanmar is wracked by a civil war that began in 2021 after the army seized power from the elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi. Independent analysts believe the ruling military controls much less than half of the country’s territory.
Too Much Steel in China Means Trouble for the World (Bloomberg) When it comes to steel, China is king, producing more than 1 billion tons a year, well over half the world’s output. But now it’s wobbling. And just as it shook the global industry during its rise to become the metal’s super-producer, a decline from peak steel has the potential to be no less turbulent. Quite simply, a domestic construction slump means there’s too much steel and too little demand. For the rest of the world, the fear is that it will become more of a dumping ground for excess product, cutting prices, driving plants out of business and putting workers out of jobs.
A new wave of blasts hits Lebanon a day after pager attack. Israel declares 'new phase' of war (AP) Walkie-talkies and solar equipment exploded in Beirut and multiple parts of Lebanon on Wednesday in an apparent second wave of attacks targeting electronic devices a day after hundreds of pagers used by Hezbollah blew up, state media and Hezbollah officials said. At least nine people were killed and more than 300 people wounded in the second wave, the Health Ministry said. The attacks, which were widely believed to be carried out by Israel targeting Hezbollah, have hiked fears that the two sides' simmering conflict could escalate into all-out war. Speaking to Israeli troops on Wednesday, Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant said, “We are at the start of a new phase in the war—it requires courage, determination and perseverance.” He made no mention of the explosions of electronic devices but praised the work of Israel’s army and security agencies, saying “the results are very impressive.” The new blasts hit a country still roiling with confusion and anger after Tuesday’s pager bombings, which killed at least 12 people, including two children, and wounded some 2,800 others.
Mali troops put down a deadly militant attack in the capital (AP) Mali troops subdued the Islamic militants who attacked a military training camp and the airport in Mali’s capital Tuesday after gunbattles that killed some soldiers, authorities said. An al-Qaida-linked group claimed the attack. The militants tried to infiltrate the Faladie military police school in Bamako in a rare attack for the capital before government troops were able to “neutralize” the attackers, army Chief of Staff Oumar Diarra said on national TV, without elaborating. Mali’s army also confirmed the militants targeted the airport, setting a plane on fire.

My Sound Advice column for Brick this week 5/4/2010
I wasn’t always an avowed hippie hater.
In my single digit and early teenage years, I listened to many of the principle players from the late 60’s youth phenomenon (thanks to my father’s record collection) from Dylan to the Byrds, Santana to Jefferson Airplane as well as the one group that not only survived, but prospered long after the Summer of love, The Grateful Dead. Not that I ever owned any of their records myself, but whenever my brother or one of my friends put on, “Box of Rain”, “Uncle John’s Band” or, “Friend of the Devil”, I didn’t complain. Though I would have preferred hearing The Who, Ted Nugent or KISS, it was innocuously pleasant music with the added bonus of being somewhat subversive. For the life of me, I couldn’t understand how they could even remotely be considered rebellious when stacked against my favorite record at the time, “Powerage” by AC/DC, but the older kids, the kids that were smoking pot, seemed to think that they were real scary.
Not being a pot smoker, I assumed they were scary because they had, “dead” in their name.
It wasn’t until years later when I witnessed the Grateful Dead for myself did my hatred blossom for them and the post relevant hippie culture they came to represent. Beyond the meandering, acidic bubbling of Jerry Garcia’s guitar floating over the group’s never ending journey to nowhere, what struck me the most during the 6 times I saw them was the defining lack of thought that epitomized their audience. They were drunken, drug addled idiots. While this stupefaction is evident at any large concert, the vapid hedonism of Grateful Dead crowds was heroic. And that was the allure of Grateful Dead shows: Not to listen to the music, but to get as fucked up as humanly possible. For a band that carried the mantle of the idealism and the hard fought battles of the counter culture movement of the late 60’s, by the time the early 80’s rolled around, the Grateful Dead had withered into forays of laid-back decadence evidenced not only by the drug overdoses of the band members themselves, but the legions of zombies they left in their wake that worshipped them as gods. People think yuppies were bad, but as despicable as those Ronald Reagan, trickle down opportunists were, they were at least making an effort (albeit a questionable one) to better themselves. Latter day hippies on the other hand stood for nothing more than the deadening of one’s head.
And what a long stupid trip it’s been ever since.
Since Papa Jerry’s heroin overdose in 1995, a plethora of jam bands has sought to wear the Grateful Dead’s crown as the number one draw in the financially lucrative and increasingly competitive hippie market. One of the genre’s top concert draws, the Athens, Georgia based Widespread Panic, played two sold out performances at the National recently and agents from the Virginia Alcoholic Beverage Control had a field day making a total 69 arrests, many for underage drinking and drinking in public, in the area around the music hall. It must have been like shooting fish in barrel. "We heard from other law enforcement agencies where the band has played, that some followers of the band may be participating in illegal activities, so we proactively provided a presence," said ABC spokesman, Philip Bogenberger, in an article in the Times Dispatch echoing similar stings authorities have conducted during the group’s recent tour (dubbed, “Operation Don’t Panic”) that resulted in 200 arrests (and an ecstasy overdose) during their performance in Pelham, Alabama and over 60 in Louisville, Kentucky. "What they did to me was totally uncool," said Jason Bartlett, 30, a spreadhead (the Widespread Panic equivalent of being a deadhead) and self-described ski bum from Colorado, who was arrested during the group’s concert in Alabama and spent 20 hours in jail before a friend posted bail for his misdemeanor marijuana arrest. "We don't want to lose our scene. We are trying not to lose our vibe, but we are definitely scared."
Well, dumbass, you should be scared. You better toughen up if you plan on being so stupid.
Beyond the plasma draining effects of jam band music, it’s because of sentiments like this is why I hate hippies. They are docile, easy targets for legal retribution rendered inert by their all-encompassing desire for obliteration. While I do think the drug war is a sham of biblical proportions, hippie’s quest for anesthetized states beguiles feeble minds unable to comprehend that huffing inhalants, binge drinking and illegal drug use in public might get you arrested. They are the poster children for the drug war.
I have no sympathy for you idiots. You got what you deserved.

SOUTHERN HOSPITALITY AND SONG: A FUN-FILLED TOURIST ITINERARY FOR MUSIC LOVERS IN NASHVILLE
Tumblr media
Nashville is often hailed as "Music City," beckoning music enthusiasts from all corners of the globe and just down the street to revel in its rich musical tapestry. From one end of this town to the other, Nashville is a testament to the honor of being the birthplace of country music. With Lower Broadway serving as the epicenter of Nashville’s live music nightlife, The Stage is an iconic venue, inviting visitors to experience the magic of Southern hospitality and song. In this guide, we will craft a little fun-filled itinerary centered around The Stage, ensuring that your journey through Nashville’s musical attractions creates a harmonious blend of live music, a festive atmosphere, and the unique charm that makes Music City truly special.
Music, Museums, and So Much More Visitors often ask the locals they encounter to name a few places that speak to the essence of what is truly Nashville. If The Stage is your starting point, just about anyone familiar with Nashville will suggest heading west from downtown to midtown and visiting a Nashville treasure- Centennial Park with its very own replica of the Parthenon. This enormous museum built with towering columns is home to beautiful artwork and a golden statue of the Greek goddess Athena.
You don’t need to travel to Athens when a version of this landmark is in the middle of Nashville. The park’s perfectly manicured lawns and gardens are a perfect way to take in the city’s beauty. And just a couple of streets across West End Avenue lies Vanderbilt University. Its sprawling campus in the heart of Music City is a quiet haven in the center of our bustling metropolis. Capture some photos and enjoy the serene surroundings before moving on to your next destination.
In this same area, visitors can experience the neighborhoods that make up Music Row, the heart of Nashville's music industry. Discover the historic recording studios, record labels, and landmarks that have shaped the careers of countless songwriters and musicians. Take in the vibrant energy and history that permeates the air because this is where the magic is made.
Turn Back Around and Head East down West End and Broadway No matter your mode of transportation- by car, foot, bus, or scooter- heading east, you have a straight shot back to downtown, Lower Broadway, and Nashville nightlife. Along the way, you will see the historic Union Station Hotel with its opulent décor and old-world charm. One building down from the hotel is the Frist Art Museum, ready to invite visitors to enjoy a range of amazing exhibits.
Venture a little further downtown, and the Bridgestone Arena is impossible to miss. While home to Nashville's own NHL team, the Predators, this venue hosts numerous concerts throughout the year. And just a couple streets down from Bridgestone, you will soon hear the twang of guitars and singing voices infused with the emotions of country, rock, and the blues. Lower Broadway is a sea of honkytonks providing visitors with what they want the most from their stay in Nashville- live music, crowded dance floors, and the clink of glasses as folks enjoy a cold beer and warm friendship.
Some Daytime Tourist Sites before the Nashville Nightlife The Lower Broadway area is home to many music venues, clubs, restaurants, hotels, and retail shops. A few essential Nashville places include the Johnny Cash Museum and the Country Music Hall of Fame. One will allow you to immerse yourself in the life and legacy of the Man in Black, and the other will take you on a journey about the history of country music and its legendary performers.
Hatch Show Print is another must-see icon that reveals the visual history of Nashville's music scene. Explore this letterpress shop, known for creating timeless posters and artwork for legendary musicians. Pick up a unique souvenir to commemorate your musical journey.
The Sun Starts to Set and the Music Begins to Rise When evening descends on Nashville, we recommend returning to where you began, at The Stage on Lower Broadway. This honky-tonk gem is renowned for its vibrant atmosphere and top-notch live performances. Sip on your favorite beverage, find a spot on the dance floor, and get ready to be swept away by the electrifying energy of the live music at The Stage. Let the music transport you to a world where every note celebrates Nashville's musical soul. Don't be shy—hit the floor and dance the night away to the infectious rhythms and heartfelt songs from some of Nashville’s finest performers.
The Best Travel Tips for Music Lovers We have two suggestions for music lovers. Visit Nashville. And when you arrive, your first destination should be The Stage. Vibrant honky-tonks line Lower Broadway and you will discover the unique character of each venue, but always remember The Stage might just be your first and last stop for a night filled with festivities as you soak in the lively atmosphere that defines Nashville's honky-tonk scene. No trip to Nashville is complete without a visit to The Stage, a legendary venue that echoes with live country music morning, noon, and night.

Let the melodies guide you through the streets of Nashville, and may your journey be filled with the infectious rhythms and warmth that define this extraordinary city.
