Cup Pong Game Pigeon Not Working
20 cups, 2 balls, and 2 iPhones is all that you need to play the latest Gamepigeon iMessage game, “Cup Pong”. This game is a digital version of the popular party drinking game known as beer pong. The game is set up with 20 solo cups — 10 on each side– forming a pyramid. 4 cups in the back row, 3 in the next, 2 cups ahead, and a final.
When I was playing Cup Pong in Game Pigeon, I used Auto Touch to record a swipe I did for a cup. When I recorded the swipe, I got a cup. After that recording - I started a new game to test the recording and replay it to see if it would go in the same cup. After I played the recording, it didn’t go in the same cup.

The Chomicle
No March Madness, no problem.
Duke Athletics made history this week, becoming the first collegiate program to recognize GamePigeon's Cup Pong as an official varsity sport. The decision will cost the University $5 million in scholarships, licensing fees, equipment and more, but it comes at a time when the country yearns for athletic competition, in whatever form it may take.
“COVID-19 has forced the University’s hand,” Director of Athletics Kevin Spite said. “Nobody cares about basketball anymore. Duke is, and always will be, about The Pong.”
A reckoning some say has been long coming, Duke has announced its decision amid efforts to recruit and train some of the most talented in the game. Reports from Adrian Wojzyzewski have identified already-enrolled freshman John Piazza as a potential target for recruitment efforts.
Piazza, in his short playing career, is racking up a .75 cup per shot average and acquires balls back at a clip of one every two turns. The freshman has attracted attention from the transfer portal as well as professional play, but he says he remains committed to staying and completing his degree and Cup Pong career at Duke.

And the Blue Devils will need him to perform, their hopes of a high seed in the National Consumption of Alcohol Association tournament being predicated on his next few matchups. It’s a lot to expect of an 18-year-old, but Piazza is actually hitting his peak performance years.
The founder of GamePigeon, Raspy Coo, could not be reached for comment, as she was doing her business above your Honda Civic at press time. However, she has made it known in the past that she will tolerate no bouncing whatsoever in the sport she invented.
“I removed us from March Madness because I knew it was the right thing to do,” President Rinse Price said. “But now, it is time to give the students something to cheer for.”
And for all of us, this comes as a boon to our spirits—our Blue Devils on the national stage, once again. Redemption.

It was a dream come true to share the stage with them.
You jumped proper into the fireplace, transferring to Southern California after which to Las Vegas. What was that like for you?
It was enjoyable! We had no associates, no cash, no jobs, no English, no household, and no place to remain. But I used to be joyful. I used to be on my technique to my dream, and I could not really feel any ache or struggles.
It will need to have been fairly a tradition shock. What stored you going?
When you need to survive, you discover methods to maintain going. But not talking English was probably the most troublesome half—if you wish to and may talk, however you’ll be able to’t. But the United States was so welcoming, and most of the people had been very nice and understanding. My first pal, [promoter, NPC/IBB official, and talent manager] Kenny Kassel, understood me with out English, and I used to be so brokenhearted when he handed away in 2008. I did take English classes, however I discovered largely from watching TV, talking with individuals, and taking appearing lessons.
Your routines have developed through the years. Your efficiency on the 2007 Olympia was fabulous, however not just like the others—slower, with dramatic music and many dance strikes. What form of suggestions did you get?
I keep in mind 2007, once I received 7th place at my first Olympia, so effectively. I keep in mind proper after the competition, after we received to our resort room, [photographer] Isaac Hinds texted Boris that I had gained first place within the routine spherical. Oh my God, we acted like children, screaming and leaping everywhere in the room. What I discovered was that if I simply copied what others did—or listened to what others thought I ought to do—I might lose crucial issues in my efficiency: my soul, my want, my creation, myself.
You’ve talked about how difficult the routine that you just carried out on the Arnold was. Is the Cyr wheel probably the most troublesome equipment you have tackled?
The Cyr wheel comes from the circus and is getting extremely popular now within the health world. It was an enormous problem for me to be taught it, since I did not have a lot time between competitions. My Cyr wheel coach, Sam Tribble, instructed me I used to be a quick learner. It’s enjoyable to do, but it surely takes plenty of steadiness and focus.
Will we see extra of it on the 2017 Fitness Olympia?
Unfortunately, the Cyr wheel does not work effectively on carpet, water, or oil. The Arnold and Olympia phases are all the time carpeted, however I might nonetheless make that work. But all of the oil we athletes use on our our bodies made it very troublesome. I am very excited to convey my new and really particular efficiency—with out the Cyr wheel—to the 2017 Olympia stage.
You have mentioned that your determination to retire was since you simply knew it was time. I do know individuals have been asking you this, however why was it time? Do you may have a grasp plan?
So many individuals inform me it isn’t proper that I am saying goodbye now—that it’ll harm my fan base and my contracts. But I am not afraid of the modifications and challenges to return. I wish to give others a chance to succeed in their targets, and I will be there to assist them with it!
I additionally wish to have children and a house. I wish to convey my household right here to the United States, stay a contented life collectively, and assist them as a lot as they helped me once I was rising up!
Last yr you promoted the OG Pole Fitness Classic in Los Angeles. What has the response been?
It was an incredible present and my first expertise as a promoter! We had nice visitor performers from the circus, a particular visitor from Russia who carried out on a flying pole, and particular visitors from the Arnold Classic staff. I additionally was in a position to work with some nice emcees. I screened a documentary about my first victory on the 2014 Arnold Classic. To high all of it off, my household got here from Russia for the present!
What are your plans for this yr’s OG Pole Fitness Classic?
My 2nd OG Pole Fitness Classic will likely be on the Ferrigno Legacy Expo. ‘ll be presenting it with my good pal and fellow promoter Chris Minnes and his staff. I am wired about it, however it is going to be an incredible occasion.
After my 2014 pole health routine, I really feel answerable for bringing the game to a unique degree. If we wish to name it a sport, performers ought to appear like athletes. They ought to eat wholesome and work out, not simply on the pole, however with weights. That’s why we’re including a particular award this yr for the very best physique.
You simply launched a brand new web site, right?
Yes, lastly, we did it! OksanaFitness.com launched 2 months in the past and has already had greater than 30,000 guests. We even have a web based retailer we’ll be launching this fall, which can supply a variety of health attire, gear, art work, magnificence, and equipment.
You actually have a signature scent! How did Black Swan fragrance come about?
My associates on the Mad Max firm, primarily based within the Czech Republic, introduced me with this concept, and I had to decide on 1 scent from 100 totally different testers they despatched me. It took me 2 weeks to decide on the correct 1! I would like OG Black Swan fragrance to be a scent of focus and focus that offers individuals confidence and braveness to be courageous and to succeed!
We’ve additionally created OG Black Swan gloves and lifting belts with Swarovski crystal accents.
Have I missed something? What about appearing? Any want to get into films or TV?
Yes, I proceed to review appearing with Melissa Skoff. She helps me with my English as effectively, but it surely’s my dream to get right into a film. I really like appearing. It’s very powerful, however so thrilling.
What challenges you now?
To prepare for the 2017 Olympia and produce my finest situation and an unforgettable efficiency from my coronary heart.
What would you want your legacy to be?
I’ve all the time wished to go away an impression in health so individuals would keep in mind me on this sport. I wish to signify risk and the concept that you actually could make what you need! It does not matter the place you come from or the struggles and difficulties you have confronted. It’s all about believing in your self, having a dream, loving what you do, and dealing exhausting.

Saturday I competed at Kinetic Multisport’s Diamond In the Rough triathlon. It had been a couple years since I raced this event in Perryville. In fact, the last couple times I had done the olympic event when it was still run by Piranha Sports. Under my new race planning strategy, I watched the weather and signed up at the last minute on Wednesday  . . the very last day you could register. Race day conditions didn’t disappoint. It was a cool 68 degrees when I arrived at Perryville Community Park and the temperature never got out of the low 80s. The humidity stayed low as well. It turned into a perfect race day.
Perryville Community Park really is a diamond in the rough.
I had decided on the sprint rather than the olympic distance this year because frankly it just sounded like more fun and I do this for fun. I don’t need to tack on mileage so someone is impressed with how far I can go. I’ve left that ridiculous worry behind. With only an 8 mile bike leg, the sprint this year was short even for a sprint. It was appealing to me because it removes any and all race strategy. Just go like the hammers of hell and breathe later! No need to watch power, no need to save something for the run. Just go!
Swim
Bike
Run
I arrived in ample time to grab my packet, setup transition and mill about prior to the start. I love pre-race especially at a triathlon. It is always fun to listen to chatter and talk to other athletes from all walks of life. It turns out many of those racing were deep in the heart of their Kinetic Multisport seasons with a deep commitment to doing as many races as they could. Kinetic has a good thing going. With more than two dozen races in 5 states, they offer many perks to those competing throughout the season. The vast majority of their races are olympic and sprint distances with a few long course events mixed in here and there. This is a nice contrast to the Ironman organization which seems to target the extreme end of the sport.
Pre-race at Diamond in the Rough.
Kinetic has greatly simplified Diamond in the Rough. The olympic swim is two laps of the sprint course and the olympic run is two laps of the run course. The bike remains different but this makes both race logistics and navigation much simpler.
I was in the black-capped swim wave, also known as the old farts swim wave, which started precisely at 8:04 a.m. Diamond in the Rough is in in-water start. Once in the water and warmed up, you can either tread water, hold on to the pier, or just move inshore a bit and stand in the muddy bottom that is the Chesapeake bay. I chose the latter. The starter gave a good countdown and I simply made my way toward the start buoy as we got close to the gun.
DIR Swim
The triathlon swim is a funny thing. It used to be something I dreaded because of the inevitable swim panic. I guess I am traumatized for life because I still get a sense of dread at the start worrying about panicking. Nobody likes to panic. Nothing good ever came after the phrase “I panicked!”.
Fortunately not me in the swim anymore.
But I didn’t panic. In fact, it’s been a long time since I’ve panicked on the swim. These days, I start out with a workman-like mentality and focus on the first buoy, navigating through people, and waiting for my heart rate to come up. Eventually, I focus on my stroke and get into some sort of fun rhythm. (A really inappropriate joke leaps to mind but this is a family blog.) Before I know it, I am disappointed the swim is over and I have to start doing something hard. Such was the case at Diamond in the Rough. Apparently last year the tide was strong (or as strong as it can be on the Chesapeake) and it really slowed the swim. This didn’t happen this year although I did manage to swim most of the second half next to someone else in my wave whom I collided with multiple times. I’m not sure which one of us wasn’t swimming straight but we managed to do so most of the way in.
The swim at DIR (I’m not typing “Diamond in the Rough” anymore. Okay, I did there but now I’m just doing DIR) . . . the swim requires the use of a pier and some added metal steps to get in and out of the water. The pier also has several flights of steps to get up and down from the park. Admittedly, this kind of sucks after the swim but mostly because if any number of athletes come out of the water together it gets a bit congested. Apparently, I whacked my right shin on the steps somewhere because when I got back to transition to get ready for the bike, my shin was bleeding profusely. “Hmm. That’ll look pretty badass in the race photos.*” Otherwise I didn’t notice much around transition like how many bikes were still in my area, or how slow I was.
Trying to avoid scalpels.
In case my dermatologist is reading this, I did take the time to spray down with sun screen again before heading out on the bike.
  Swim: 16:03
T1: 1:13
The bike was just fun! The DIR olympic course is known for its hills especially the giant climb coming out of Port Deposit but this part of Maryland jams a few hills into the short sprint course too. The four mile out and back is basically a mile in and out of the park then 3 miles down and up hills. Apparently there were some treacherous spots as I saw at least one broken collarbone and at two cases of serious road rash. Fortunately, I just looked like I had serious injury as blood flowed freely down my shin into my cycling shoes. Otherwise I essentially just turned the pedals as hard as I could. By cycling standards, I’m really not all that fast but it was still a good time.
The short sprint course had no shortage of descending and climbing.
I’m always impressed by guys and gals that come off the bike via the flying dismount. When done properly, it is elegant, graceful, and speedy. When done improperly . . . well I mentioned there was a broken collarbone right? At age 53 I have no need to learn to master the flying mount or dismount. You break things other than the collarbone with a failed flying mount.
youtube
As it was I clomped my way up and down the hill between transition and mount/dismount in my bike shoes with Look cleats. For those that are not cyclists, picture running with a half a golf ball glued to the bottom of your shoes.
Bike: 26:26
T2 was a time-killing debacle. When I racked my bike I bumped the bike next to me and knocked it off the bar. This is amazing to me because in T1 my bike always seems to be magnetically attached to the bar. My bike neighbor had precariously hung their bike and faced it the wrong direction. I hadn’t really bumped it that hard. I managed to catch it before it fell but now found myself holding two bikes and not running.
Properly racked bikes.
I felt like yelling “TIME OUT” but that doesn’t work in triathlon. Time dragged as I re-hung both bikes. And then I had to put on socks. I learned the hard way in preparation for the French Creek triathlon not to try to run barefoot with my custom insoles. This leads to a massive blister so I sat on the ground, wiped my feet off and donned socks and running shoes. At least I had added lace locks to my Hoka’s so I could pull them on fast. All of this took so long I felt it was a shame I didn’t bring along a neck tie for a more formal look on the run.
T2: 1:45
On the run, I mostly passed people. It is hard to tell but there were probably some olympic athletes on the course by then as well since the olympic distance started first. Still, the vast majority of folks were sprinters and the run course wasn’t packed when I was on it. I did get passed by one younger gentleman early on. He was running really well.
My lace-locked equipped Hokas.
My friend Susanne would be proud of me for the finish. Throughout the run I had picked off one runner at a time. There was one gentleman I made up no ground on until the last few hundred yards. About 300 yards out from the finish he slowed stretching a leg. Weakness! The predator in me pounced and I accelerated. I was within a few yards of him as we neared the finish chute and I saw 50 something written on his calf. My age group! I blew past him and sprinted down the chute. He gave chase but I kept my advantage across the line. This would prove important.
I am disappointed overall with my run at DIR. I don’t know if I didn’t really have a tough enough mental game, had not done enough speedwork, or just don’t know what a good 5K pace is these days. I think all of the above. I haven’t done a transition run all year except for the French Creek triathlon, there has been a minimum amount of speedwork, and I haven’t out and out raced a standalone 5K in years. I think I need to add all these to my “to do” list. Granted, I was out to have fun at DIR but there is no reason not to try to be as competitive as I could. The run has always been my thing. I placed 6th overall in the run but I still feel like it wasn’t all that well executed and could have been faster.
Run: 23:33
Post-race I collapsed in the grass under a shady tree for a bit and sucked down a bottle of water. I then went to the scoring tent and printed my result. 1:09 and first in age group! Awesome! I went into transition, packed up my T area and grabbed my phone. I had a text from Kinetic Multisport with my result that showed 3rd place age group. Huh!? How could that be!? We all started at the same time. It isn’t like someone faster could have finished later. I went back to the scoring tent and re-printed my result. 3rd place age group. I retrieved my earlier printout and compared. Aha! My category changed. I was 1st place in 50-54 but 3rd place overall masters. This is better so I got advanced to a better category thanks to my sprint down the chute. The gentleman who passed me early in the run was 2nd overall masters. 1st place went to a gentleman I didn’t see anywhere on the course. He was a Kinetic staff member and at the podium had on civilian shorts, a Kinetic staff shirt, and hadn’t looked like he raced. It seemed odd, but hey . . it’s their party.
Well, there it is. A pretty boring race write-up if ever there was one. It gives me an idea for something a bit more thought provoking but for now let’s just say I am still enjoying short course racing far more than I ever enjoyed long course. I think I’ll stay here for a while.
* Imagine if you will a picture of me on the podium. I had handed my phone to someone to take a picture and in so doing managed to turn on some sort of thing on the camera that made all the pictures look like this:
I think I enabled the cataract filter on my iPhone camera.
Assuming the race photographer doesn’t require a kidney and an organ to be named later I may purchase a couple pics from them and post later.
Sprinting Again Saturday I competed at Kinetic Multisport's Diamond In the Rough triathlon. It had been a couple years since I…

What Are the Rules for Training Older Clients?
The woman who walked into Be Stronger Fitness in Sacramento couldn’t believe what she was seeing. Or, more accurately, what she wasn’t seeing.
“Where are the chairs?” she asked owner Robert Linkul.
Chairs?
“For exercising.”
Linkul soon learned that the woman, who was in her mid-60s, had spent her life as a farmer, doing physical labor almost every day. But now, on the verge of retirement, she’d somehow convinced herself that the only safe way to work out was in a chair—presumably, he says, “to do lateral raises with two-pound weights at extremely slow tempos.”
So, naturally, when she looked around Linkul’s gym, she thought someone was playing a joke on her. Dumbbells? Medicine balls? Gymnastics rings? Prowlers? What was someone her age supposed to do with that stuff?
But it’s no joke. The average age of Linkul’s clients is 63, and, like all the coaches I interviewed for this article, he thinks it’s more dangerous not to train them the way he does. “The aging adult is exactly the person who should be lifting heavier loads,” he says, with the goal of increasing their strength, power, movement skills, and functional abilities.
Still, it would be utterly insane not to make concessions to your clients’ advancing age. It’s a lesson I learned the hard way several times over.
But before we get into what trainers should and shouldn’t do with their older clients, let’s start with a more fundamental question.
What Do We Mean by “Older”?
Athlete and strength coach Dan John has a simple answer to the question: 56.
“Once you make it to 25, you’ll make it to 55, almost no matter what you do,” he says. “Fifty-six is when the statistics punch you in the face. Fifty-six is when the guy knocks on the door and says, ‘It’s time to pay the piper.’”
The problem isn’t what happens at that specific age. It’s what you do between your early 30s and mid 50s. “There’s this very slow erosion where your body composition starts to flip itself,” he explains. “You lose half a pound of muscle and gain half a pound of fat a year. It’s so slippery you don’t notice it. It’s like plate tectonics. You don’t notice it until there’s an earthquake.”
The obvious solution, and a big reason why the personal-training profession exists in the first place, is to do everything possible to maintain muscle mass and limit body fat, and to do it for as long as possible.
It’s a challenge John and I—two sexagenarians born at the peak of the Baby Boom in 1957—have embraced. We’re both lifelong gym rats, and we both write about training. Alas, the similarities end there.
For example, John competed in an Olympic weightlifting meet last fall. Me? The only time I touch a barbell is to move it off the rack so I can use the TRX.
And that’s the problem you run into when you try to draw up rules about aging clients. No two of us are exactly alike. If you asked me, a 61-year-old whose body has been breaking down since I injured my shoulder in a high school football game in 1972, I’d give you a whole list of things I don’t think someone my age should do.
But if you ask John what our peers should phase out, or banish entirely, his list would be blank. Instead, he proposes two qualifying phrases: “done properly” and “it depends.”
So if the question is, “Can a 60-year-old do a barbell squat?”, John would reply, “Done properly.” Should they? “It depends.”
“When you’re working with the older population, there is no bad tool,” he says. “Barbell, TRX, sled, whatever. There is no bad exercise. The whole buffet of training is available to the older client.”
That makes sense when you’re talking about strength training older clients like John or me—someone with a lifetime of training and as-yet-unexplored abilities and limitations. But Greg Mikolap, a trainer in the U.K. who works primarily with seniors, says he rarely sees a client like us. A more typical client, he says, is “a 65-plus-year-old who’s spent most of his or her life behind the desk.”
In those cases, it’s not hard at all to rule out entire categories of exercises.

What Not to Do
1. Anything with a barbell
My most successful books, including the first two in the New Rules of Lifting series, emphasized basic movements like squats and deadlifts. One by one, I realized my aging body could no longer tolerate the most popular barbell exercises: bent-over rows, bench presses, shoulder presses, power cleans, front and back squats, and finally deadlifts.
I say “finally” because I was still doing them until three summers ago, when I hurt my back on a warm-up set.
Linkul also avoids barbell lifts, especially the most popular one. “I don’t think I’ve ever had a client do a barbell bench press,” he says. “I don’t see a huge value of bilateral pushing at that angle, at this point in their lives.” He thinks the risk of shoulder injury is too high, even for push-ups. He’ll have his clients do dumbbell bench presses a couple of times a month, but otherwise avoids horizontal pushing.
Mikolap’s problem with the barbell is similarly exercise-specific, with a list that includes bent-over rows, Olympic lifts, front squats, and deadlifts from the floor.
2. Jumps and sprints
For me, nothing illustrates the indignity of aging quite like the time I hurt my knee jumping over a creek bed. A dry creek bed. I was playing golf with a friend, and didn’t see any extraordinary risk in making the short hop to retrieve an errant shot. But something went wrong on my takeoff, and I limped around for weeks afterward.
Mikolap eschews box jumps for a different reason: the high risk of falling for what he calls “a very dubious benefit.”
As for sprints, Linkul believes the risk of something going wrong in an all-out run is way too high when there are so many relatively safe ways to accomplish the same results.
3. Hard HIIT sessions
Mikolap sees this as a concession to the age-related decline in aerobic capacity—3 to 6 percent per decade in your 30s and 40s, increasing to a loss of 20 percent per decade after 70.
His point isn’t that you should avoid interval training; it’s still hugely beneficial for older trainees. But you should adjust your expectations for how hard to push them.
READ ALSO: Can Older Clients Benefit from Interval Training?
Now, with the scary stuff out of the way, let’s shift to what your older clients can do. All three coaches agree on one key point: A good training program for seniors starts at, on, and with the bottom.
What to Do Instead
1. Hit the ground
“That thing at your feet, called the ground, is the most important thing to deal with when you train a geriatric population,” John says.
The reason is simple: The older you get, the bigger the risk of falling, and the more catastrophic the consequences. Being able to get up and down from the floor is an important survival skill.
“That’s the beauty of the Turkish get-up, because you have to get up and down,” he says, adding that you don’t need to do the complete movement (which can be brutal for someone with bad knees) to get the key benefit of pushing yourself up from the floor.
He also likes push-ups and planks for that reason, along with ground-based mobility work.
But as functional as they are, there’s another ground-based exercise that the coaches consider even more important.
2. Focus on hip extensors
The gluteus maximus is the body’s largest muscle, and the one that makes us most distinctly human. With its key role in both posture and locomotion, preventing or reversing its atrophy is crucial for senior clients.
“Their glutes just kind of go away,” Linkul says.
John is more blunt. “The butt is the best indicator of youth,” he says. “A saggy ass is a sign of all kinds of issues.”
That’s why Linkul and John make the glute bridge a primary focus of their programs. John recommends doing the exercise two different ways: for reps and for isometric holds in the top position. For the latter, he uses a special tweak (shown here) to ensure good form:
With your arms out to your sides, turn your palms up, and drive your thumbs into the ground. John says it helps to keep the shoulders “back and packed.”
3. Use loads conducive to both strength and hypertrophy
For all the talk about sarcopenia (age-related loss of muscle) and osteopenia (loss of bone), Mikolap believes dynapenia (loss of strength) gets overlooked. As this study shows, strength falls two to five times faster than muscle size in seniors.
But that’s not to downplay the importance of muscle tissue. This 2018 study found that sarcopenia was independently associated with impaired mobility and the loss of what the researchers call “instrumental activities of daily living,” which include shopping, light housework, and preparing meals. Dynapenia, meanwhile, wasn’t associated with those impairments, once the researchers adjusted for a long list of health and demographic variables.
“After 55, you absolutely need old-school, Arnold Schwarzenegger hypertrophy work,” John says. He calls it a “game-changer” for older clients, co-equal to ground-based training.
You don’t have to choose to focus on one or the other, since you can increase both strength and muscle mass with multiple sets of eight to 12 reps. Linkul says his clients do 85 percent of their work in that range, with a total of 16 to 48 reps per movement.
If you’re looking for the perfect exercise for seniors, Mikolap recommends the TRX row. Not only does it increase upper-body strength and muscle mass in general, it improves grip strength specifically, which is highly correlated to longevity. “I would say it even decreases fear of falling because of the body’s position,” he adds.
4. Go unilateral
In place of bilateral exercises, Linkul likes to use single-arm exercises for the upper body and split-stance exercises for the lower body. That includes lunges and step-ups along with sled pushes and pulls.
Sled work, he says, offers a little-known benefit for clients recovering from lower-body injuries who might shorten their stride because they fear falling. Because they’re supported while pushing and pulling, “they can work on getting a longer stride, and it starts to transfer to their normal walking gait.”
READ ALSO: Three Functional Tests for Older Clients to Assess Quality of Movement
5. Restore power
Power declines even faster with age than strength or muscle mass. Building strength will help restore power, since they’re highly correlated, but all three coaches still incorporate some power training in their programs.
The trick is to do it without creating more problems than you solve. So instead of doing box jumps or sprints, they use safer movements that keep their clients’ feet on or near the floor. “We don’t have to leave the ground to get the power component,” Linkul says. “If they can go outside and throw a medicine ball, they can completely unleash true power.”
Can’t go outside?
John recommends kettlebell swings as an alternative to jumps.
Mikolap suggests skipping instead of running.
Linkul uses stationary bike sprints and dynamic step-ups in addition to medicine ball throws.
6. Transfer loads
John is one of the first, best-known, and most forceful advocates for using loaded carries in training, and Linkul is not just on board, he takes the idea a step farther with transfers: The client picks up a weight, carries it somewhere, and then puts it down.
Within that simple formula Linkul finds countless variations. “We might carry it overhead, or below the waist, or at the shoulders,” he says. They might carry it in a straight line or a serpentine pattern, and then set it down on the floor, or onto a shelf overhead, or someplace in between.
The drill begins with a hip hinge, which Linkul considers the most important movement pattern for older clients. Holding the weights develops grip strength. Carrying employs a split stance. They might also incorporate a vertical press, and all of it requires and trains core stability.
Putting It All Together
The most obvious advice for training older clients is to avoid three categories of exercises:
Things that create new injuries, aches, or pains
Things that exacerbate existing injuries, aches, or pains
Things that wouldn’t normally create problems unless you do them too heavy or too fast, in which case, see #1 and #2
But it’s in following those edicts that so many senior fitness programs turn to mush.
Your clients need your help to preserve their strength, power, mobility, muscle mass, and functional movement skills, which means your workouts need to be genuine training programs.
That is, they need to work toward measurable improvements in important fitness qualities. Thus, a good program includes these elements:
Ground-based core and mobility work
Strength exercises that train the major muscle groups with multiple sets of eight to 12 reps
Special emphasis on hip hinges, with the goal of increasing the size and strength of the glutes
Exercises that increase grip strength, including pulls and carries
Power exercises like medicine-ball throws and slams, kettlebell swings, skips, and sprints on a stationary bike
Exercises and drills that check multiple boxes: unilateral lifts that improve balance and stability; lower-body exercises that improve movement quality; and carries that incorporate real-world functional challenges
Most of all, keep in mind that while each senior client has different abilities and limitations, all of us are trying to slow down the aging process as much as we can. That brings me to this final thought from Robert Linkul:
“When you treat people like they’re old, they start to act like they think old people should act.”
None of us wants that.

Wyoming Cowboys Josh Allen goes from unknown to No. 1 pick in NFL draft buzz
LARAMIE, Wyo. — On Nov. 20, 2014, near the end of Josh Allen’s first season at junior college, he sent emails imploring someone — anyone, really — to give him a chance to be a Division I quarterback.
The recipient list included not only every FBS head coach, but also every offensive coordinator, defensive coordinator and position coach from Alabama to Washington, more than 1,000 emails in total. They started with the same salutation and the same desperate plea from a kid in tiny Firebaugh, California: I want to be your quarterback.
Courtesy of Josh Allen
His unsolicited emails went over like a loan request from a Nigerian prince. He received a handful of responses and only two — Eastern Michigan and Wyoming — eventually offered him a scholarship. (The Eagles actually withdrew their offer after he chose to visit Wyoming near the end of the early signing period for junior college transfers.)
“Yeah, I was disappointed,” Allen said. “I couldn’t believe it.”
On the bright side, it was one more scholarship offer than Allen had coming out of Firebaugh High School the year before, when not a single FBS or FCS program called.
“I truly felt like I was a Division I quarterback, and I’d felt that way for a long time,” Allen said. “I just wanted other people to see it.”
No one else saw it, at least not back then. But after throwing for more than 3,000 yards and 28 touchdowns for Wyoming last season, the quarterback that nearly every FBS team (but two) ignored might very well end up being one of the first players selected in the 2018 NFL draft.
Allen’s anonymity ended almost immediately after the final selection of the 2017 NFL draft was made on April 29, when ESPN reporter Adam Schefter said: “There was one personnel director who told me this week that you can put in the books, Josh Allen will be the No. 1 pick in the NFL draft next year.”
Of course, most of the people watching ESPN’s draft coverage that day probably wondered: Who in the hell is Josh Allen?
“Probably 90 percent of America,” Allen admitted. “That’s kind of been my M.O. my entire football career.”
There’s only one stoplight in Firebaugh, California, a farming town of about 7,500 residents in California’s Central Valley, about 40 miles west of Fresno. Originally known as Firebaugh’s Ferry, it was an outpost on the San Joaquin River during the California gold rush during the mid-19th century.
According to 2011 data from the U.S. Census Bureau, Latinos make up more than 90 percent of the town’s population, many of them migrant workers employed in agriculture.
Potentially the first three picks in the 2018 NFL draft. The reigning Heisman winner. A two-time top-four Heisman vote-getter. And that’s just the half of it. Add it all up, and 2017 is truly shaping up as college’s year of the quarterback.
“It’s a small town, everybody knows everybody and news travels fast,” said Allen. “It was an experience I wouldn’t trade for anything because it kind of shaped who I am today.”
Thousands of acres of alfalfa, pistachios and almond groves line the road to the ranch where Allen grew up. Joel Allen, Josh’s father, and his uncle, Todd Allen, grow about 3,000 acres of Pima cotton, cantaloupes and wheat against the backdrop of a coastal mountain range. Joel and Todd Allen are third-generation farmers.
Josh’s great-grandfather Arvid “Swede” Allen arrived at Ellis Island from Sweden in 1907 and settled in Firebaugh during the Great Depression. Josh’s grandfather A.E. “Buzz” Allen established the family farm in 1975 and was also a local school board member and civic leader (the high school gymnasium is named in his honor).
“Josh would be fourth-generation,” Joel Allen said. “But I don’t think he’s coming back to the farm.”
Joel and his wife, LaVonne, raised their four children on the ranch, and Josh, his younger brother Jason and sisters Nicala and Makenna were involved in sports at an early age. There is a basketball goal, swimming pool and batting cage at the ranch, and Josh grew up playing nearly every sport, including baseball, basketball, football, golf, gymnastics, karate and swimming. He and his brother, who plays first base at Saddleback College in Mission Viejo, California, also helped their father and uncle on the farm.
“It instilled a work ethic,” Josh said. “Seeing my dad wake up super early when the sun wasn’t even out and then coming home when the sun was set, he worked his tail off to provide for our family and did a great job. He’s the most selfless man I know, and I think if I’m half the man he is, I’ll be all right in this world.”
Josh learned quite a bit about hard work from his mother, too. Until recently, LaVonne owned one of the few restaurants in town — aptly named The Farmer’s Daughter — and fed farmers every morning before they went to work.
“She’s the rock of our family,” Josh said.
Josh grew up a Fresno State football fan and tailgated with his parents and siblings at most home games. He attended the Bulldogs’ summer camps and even retrieved the kicking tee during a few games (former coach Pat Hill once yelled at him to get off the field). One of Josh’s most memorable moments was meeting Fresno State quarterback Derek Carr, another homegrown star, who now plays for the Oakland Raiders.
Josh Allen, right, grew up near Fresno State and was a fan of the Bulldogs and current Oakland Raiders QB Derek Carr. Josh Allen
In February 2014, when it was time for Josh to choose a college as a high school senior, the Bulldogs — and every other FBS team — weren’t interested. At the time, Josh was about 6-foot-3 and 180 pounds. He hadn’t attended the elite quarterback camps and wasn’t a widely known prospect. His high school team didn’t participate in many 7-on-7 camps because Josh and many of his teammates were busy playing baseball and other sports. He was the leading scorer on his basketball team and also pitched on the baseball team, reaching 90 mph with his fastball.
It wasn’t like Josh wasn’t trying to get coaches’ attention, though, especially those working at Fresno State. When his father played in a charity golf tournament with then-Bulldogs coach Tim DeRuyter, he told him about Josh’s desire to play for him. But DeRuyter decided Josh wasn’t the right fit. San Diego State offered Josh a chance to join the team as a walk-on, but coach Rocky Long couldn’t promise playing time. Left without a major college scholarship, Allen enrolled at Reedley College, about 65 miles southeast of Firebaugh, where one of the assistants was married to his cousin.
“He wasn’t too concerned when he went to junior college,” Joel said. “He knew there was going to be a big-time opportunity for him. He just needed a stage and he got one.”
Josh didn’t start the first three games at Reedley College, but he came off the bench to run for four touchdowns in the fourth game. After only a couple of starts, his offensive coordinator predicted FBS scholarship offers would soon start rolling in. But the offers never came, even after he’d grown to 6-foot-5, 238 pounds, and sent the mass email to every coach in the country.
“He saw himself as a big-time quarterback, even though he was in this small-time situation in a smaller body,” Wyoming offensive coordinator Brent Vigen said. “Not all kids see themselves that way.”
We have to assume that most coaches didn’t click on the link to Josh’s junior college highlights on hudl.com — a handful of coaches told ESPN that they receive dozens of unsolicited emails from recruits every day. If they had, they would have seen Allen display the arm strength, accuracy and mobility they covet.
On the first play of his highlight reel, he makes a back-shoulder throw from his end zone for a 38-yard gain. On another throw, he looks to his left, rolls to his right and fires a 37-yard strike into the back of the end zone — just before an outside linebacker viciously hits him near the sideline.
“Allen has an elite arm and frame (listed at 6-foot-5, 233 pounds) and is surprisingly fast and athletic for his size. He can make any throw, and his accuracy is terrific when his feet are set. A little bit of a gunslinger at times, he has all the tools to be an elite NFL QB. If he comes out, he’ll be in the running for the No. 1 pick in the 2018 NFL draft.”
The coaches also would have seen Josh keeping the ball on a zone-read, running up the middle and breaking a tackle for a 40-yard touchdown. On another run, he leaped over a safety trying to tackle him. The highlights were good enough to get Wyoming’s coaches interested — even if they’d gone to Reedley College to scout another potential transfer. And Vigen admits the Cowboys offered a scholarship to Josh only after they lost quarterback prospect Eric Dungey to Syracuse late in the recruiting process.
Wyoming coach Craig Bohl, who had guided the Cowboys to a 4-8 record in his first season in 2014 after winning three FCS national championships at North Dakota State, was the only FBS coach who made the long trek to Allen Ranch.
“He looked me straight in the eye and said, ‘We went all around the country and there’s only one quarterback we want and that’s your son. He’s going to be the face of our program,'” Joel recalled.
Before Josh committed to Wyoming, however, he made one last plea to Fresno State’s coaches. The Bulldogs had just received a commitment from quarterback Chason Virgil, a 6-foot-1, 170-pound high school prospect from Mesquite, Texas. Virgil was shorter and lighter than Josh was during his senior year at Firebaugh High, when he said the Bulldogs told him he didn’t fit the prototype of what they wanted in a quarterback.
After Virgil committed to Fresno State, Josh sent a terse email to an assistant coach: “6-1, 170?”
“Yeah, we got our guy,” the assistant responded. “Good luck.”
In Allen’s first season at Wyoming in 2015, he exited training camp as the No. 2 quarterback, behind Indiana transfer Cameron Coffman and ahead of freshman Nick Smith. Coffman hurt his knee in the season opener, a 24-13 loss to North Dakota, so Allen started against Eastern Michigan the next week. He led the Cowboys on an eight-play, 84-yard touchdown drive on his first series and had them moving again on the second drive.
But then Allen took on a defender at the end of a 24-yard run, breaking his collarbone in seven spots. Surgeons needed eight screws and a plate to repair it, and Allen said he didn’t leave his dorm room for three weeks after he was hurt. Wyoming finished 2-10.
“I was devastated,” he said.

In hindsight, sitting out the rest of the 2015 season might have been the best thing that could have happened. Vigen said Allen weighed 215 pounds when he arrived at Wyoming, but it was a “bad 215.” Allen spent the next several months working to get bigger and faster, and his collarbone was fully healed by the time preseason camp came the next year. It was during preseason practices in 2016 when Bohl and Vigen realized how good Allen might be.
Former San Francisco 49ers general manager Trent Baalke was watching a Wyoming practice in late August, before the 49ers played an exhibition game at the Denver Broncos. Baalke and a couple of scouts were there to evaluate tailback Brian Hill and a handful of other seniors, but Allen was the one who made the biggest impression.
“Your quarterback could be in an NFL camp right now,” Baalke told Bohl.
It was high praise for a player who had taken only 13 snaps at the FBS level. In the 2016 opener, Allen led the Cowboys to a 40-34 win over Northern Illinois in three overtimes. He scored the winning touchdown on a scramble, eluding three would-be tacklers to find the end zone. Allen finished his junior season with 3,203 passing yards with 28 touchdowns and 15 interceptions. The Cowboys upset Boise State 30-28 en route to winning the MWC Mountain Division title, but then they lost four of their last five games.
On the night of Jan. 9, Allen watched Clemson defeat Alabama 35-31 in the College Football Playoff National Championship. He watched the Tigers’ thrilling victory in his parents’ living room, along with agent Tom Condon and his associates. The next night, while dining at one of his favorite Mexican restaurants, Allen told his parents, siblings, girlfriend (Brittany Williams, a Fresno State cheerleader) and a few other friends that he was turning pro.
But Allen couldn’t sleep that night, and when Vigen called the next morning, he couldn’t muster the courage to answer.
“I couldn’t talk to him and tell him that I was declaring for the draft,” Allen said. “At that point, I knew there was something wrong with my decision. I’m a firm believer in your gut being undefeated.”
Vigen was driving to the Denver airport to make a recruiting trip to Wisconsin. He called Joel Allen, who told him that Josh was having second thoughts about turning pro. When Vigen’s plane landed, he immediately called Bohl, who told him that Josh had changed his mind and was staying in school.
“I asked him, ‘Do you want to get drafted or do you want to have a career?'” Bohl said. “We think this next year is going to really give him a better shot to have a long-term career in the NFL. I mean, he barely shaves now.”
Bohl wasn’t the only one who offered Josh advice. Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz, who played for Bohl at North Dakota State, also reached out to him when he was deciding what to do. Like Josh, Wentz was a late bloomer. College recruiters had largely overlooked him at Century High School in Bismarck, North Dakota, and he didn’t start for the Bison until his junior season.
After leading North Dakota State to back-to-back FCS national titles, he was the No. 2 pick of the 2016 NFL draft by the Eagles, the highest selection ever for an FCS player. He ended up starting 16 games as a rookie, throwing for 3,782 yards with 16 touchdowns and 14 interceptions.
Besides their small-town upbringing and the fact they played in a pro-style offense under Bohl, there are obvious physical similarities. While Vigen says Wentz is “off the charts” when it comes to maturity and other intangibles, he says Josh might be more physically talented.
Wentz’s advice to Allen was simple: Make sure you’re ready for the NFL.
“He seems like a bright kid with a bright future,” Wentz said. “I know he has a lot of talent and people are really high on him.”
One thing that Wentz said especially struck a chord with Josh: “He told me that I’d be stepping into a locker room full of 35-year-old men with families and children, who would be depending on me to win games and help secure their jobs.”
For one more year, at least, Josh prefers a smaller stage. His goal is to lead the Cowboys to a MWC championship and a New Year’s Six bowl game. Six months from now, he hopes everyone in America recognizes him.
“Everything happens for a reason,” he said. “I think that kids who are at smaller schools or don’t have offers from big schools can look at my story and continue to work hard. I preach to them that it doesn’t matter where you come from, it matters how you play and how you apply yourself. If you want something, go get it.”

I preach to them that it doesn’t matter where you come from, it matters how you play and how you apply yourself. If you want something, go get it.”

Are you impressed with Stephen Curry’s showing on the WEB.COM Tour?
I have always been fascinated with athletes that play other sports trying their luck on the pro golf circuit. I was quite impressed with Stephen Curry’s showing on the Web.com tour this week.  He put up a very respectable showing with 2 rounds of 74. He did miss the cut, but he did catch the attention of many fans golfers and non-golfers.
Your thoughts……….
AKRON, Ohio – This week Firestone Country Club is the gathering place for 49 of the world’s top 50 players. All four reigning major champions are here, as are dozens of other elite names, all with accomplished backgrounds.
It’s an exclusive field with a lucrative purse to match, and it’s the final opportunity for guys to hone their craft before heading to the season’s final major.
And yet, despite all of the pedigree that accompanies the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational, the biggest story in golf this week revolves around an amateur who missed the cut 2,500 miles away.
Any questions over the merits of Steph Curry’s unrestricted sponsor exemption into this week’s Ellie Mae Classic on the Web.com Tour were roundly silenced by his opening-round 74 that exceeded all expectations. What had the potential to become a cringe-worthy spectacle instead captivated a hefty amount of attention.
The crossover potential was fully realized as Curry had golf fans and non-golf fans alike buzzing about his round on a developmental circuit that some likely had never heard of before.
In essence, the grand experiment worked.
It also got the attention of several of the PGA Tour’s biggest names.
“To be honest, I think it’s pretty special for a two-time MVP to be able to shoot 74 at a pro event and beat other pros,” said Jason Day. “I mean, we play our whole lives and the guy plays basketball and he beats some of the pros. It’s very impressive to see.”
Curry’s inclusion in the field initially drew some resistance, including from professionals who felt he was taking a spot from someone who could better put it to use to pursue his livelihood. But the Web.com field archives show that the “unrestricted” sponsor invites – of which each tournament receives two – often go to players who have no true aspirations of competing week in and week out on Tour.
The other unrestricted spot this week in California went to Colt McNealy, the teenage brother of top-ranked amateur Maverick McNealy, who took top honors in an 18-hole qualifier. The spots simply serve as a tool by which the tournament can bolster its profile, whether by investing in a budding young player or bringing in new fans by the truckload thanks to a certain NBA star.
After a second straight 74, Curry won’t be around for the weekend, and he’ll beat only a handful of players. But his ability to hold his own in a sport he considers a hobby was not lost on those who play it as a job.
“It’s so rare to have a player in another sport of that caliber playing during his career,” said Brendan Steele. “Like, he’s in the prime of his career in the other sport. That’s what I think is so cool about it. There are plenty of guys that will want to play the PGA Tour, Web.com after they’re done and they get to practice for five years or whatever. But he’s in the prime of his career.”
Curry’s effort around TPC Stonebrae had its rocky moments, but he also produced a handful of highlights including a lengthy birdie make after which he channeled Jordan Spieth’s memorable Open exchange by directing his caddie to retrieve the ball from the hole.
The move was noted by the man who first made it famous at Royal Birkdale, and it elicited a wry grin from Spieth after his second round at Firestone.
“I should have posted something about that, but I didn’t see it until today,” Spieth said. “It was pretty cool, really cool to see. You see him fist-pumping out there, and just him talking about how nervous he was when he heard his name called. It just makes us feel a little better when sometimes some of the stuff he does looks like a robot, not exactly human.”
Curry’s performance isn’t designed to open the floodgates for current and former athletes looking to test their game against the pros, nor should it. Few amateurs can keep pace with Curry, who boasts a +0.1 handicap. But then again, not every better-than-scratch handicap can hold his own on a tournament course with galleries lining every fairway.
Whatever negatives may have been bandied about when Curry’s exemption was first announced melted away by the time he rolled in his first birdie putt. This is a win for all parties involved: Curry has acquitted himself well, but at the same time he has shown the vast gulf that separates top amateurs and the best of golf’s triple-A affiliate.
It also gave the circuit some much-needed publicity, put the tournament and sponsor on the lips of thousands and became the biggest golf storyline – even during a week where the PGA Tour’s best are busy vying for a $10 million purse.
“People are paying attention. People are talking about the sport,” said Paul Casey. “It’s brilliant. Do something to help get people talking about the game and grow the game. That’s what those spots for as well, I think.”

Oksana Grishina Guns For Her Fourth And Final Olympia Crown
When Oksana Grishina introduced onstage on the Arnold Sports Festival final March that she’d be retiring after the 2017 Olympia, the physique world gave a collective, “Say, what? At the height of her talents? In a sport where no one can touch her?”
Grishina had simply earned her fourth consecutive Fitness International title, performing maybe her most difficult routine, involving a Cyr wheel and Queen’s “The Show Must Go On.” Later, she mentioned that when she was engaged on the efficiency, “I just knew it was time to leave the stage.”
For greater than a decade, Russian-born Grishina has been performing rings across the competitors. She turned the odds-on favourite to succeed all-time health champ Adela Garcia nearly from the second she hit the worldwide scene. She was the IFBB Overall World Fitness champion in 2006 and joined the professional ranks the next yr in time to complete 7th at her first Olympia. She ascended to the health throne in 2014 and hopes to go away the game with 4 Olympia medals, matching her 4 moments within the highlight with Fitness International promoter Arnold Schwarzenegger.
youtube
Grishina and her husband, Boris Ivanov, have moved round most of their lives. (They now stay in Los Angeles.) At age 39, she says she’s simply starting to put in writing her story and has large plans for the longer term.
Your father was within the navy. What was it like being a military brat in Russia?
We moved round loads whereas my father served. It wasn’t straightforward for me to alter associates and faculties on a regular basis, however my household was all the time collectively, and we went via all of the struggles and difficulties understanding we might rely upon one another. I discovered loads from my mother and father about self-discipline and duty, particularly keep constructive it doesn’t matter what.
You had been additionally an elite athlete in rhythmic gymnastics. What attracted you to it?
It’s a stupendous and chic sport that features all the pieces in a single—acrobatics, ballet, flexibility, and unbelievable coordination. I fell in love with it regardless that it wasn’t actually my form of sport. I had totally different genetics from lots of the different ladies who had been very skinny. I all the time had a muscular physique, and regardless that I adopted a strict eating regimen, I could not change the way in which I used to be made. But I by no means gave up, and I received my Master of Sport quicker than all my teammates, together with many women who had extra potential than I did.
What was your favourite equipment?
It’s simpler for me to say what was my least favourite equipment! It was the ball and ribbon. If you misplaced management of the ball, it might take you the remainder of your routine to retrieve it. And if the ribbon received tied in a knot as you waved it round, you’d should cease and untie it earlier than you possibly can proceed your routine.
How lengthy between the top of your gymnastics profession and your entry into health?
I completed gymnastics in 1996 and began health in 2002. All that point I used to be busy working as a choreographer in a faculty with children and in a college with adults. My job included performing within the theater for the musicals “Cats” and “Phantom of the Opera.” I used to be additionally working as an aerobics teacher and private coach.
How did you meet your husband?
We met in Russia on the opening of the primary Albatross health gymnasium in our small metropolis, Kalingrad. I requested him to coach me, and he has been my coach, nutritionist, finest pal, and most enthusiastic supporter ever since. He knew all concerning the sport’s historical past and carefully adopted U.S. professional bodybuilding. After he received his medical diploma, he turned a preferred bodybuilding coach. Later, he managed Albatross golf equipment all throughout Russia.
When did you 2 resolve to return to the United States, and why?
On my method to a professional card, I gained the IFBB Overall Russian Championship, Europe Championship, and World Championship—all in 2006. I requested for a professional card, and in 2007, we moved to the States so I might attempt competing as a professional in opposition to all the opposite wonderful athletes.

One way a man can look his finest is by wearing cufflinks. But maybe you are not a man who wants something fancier but something a bit more casual to add to your wardrobe.
