new year. new you. old pjs. - java jive on jan 1

I went to this spot prior to the decision to start this blog, so forgive me if my review is spotty. There are plenty of places that fall into the category of "checked off before the blog" but I felt this one should still get it's own post. Apparently Java Jive is a big thing around here -- the fact that I had never even heard of it until a few weeks ago blows my mind. It is walking distance from my apartment. What. I'm usually all "hip" and "with it." 

I met a friend (@siddflinch... does tagging even work on tumblr? I don't know. I'm new to this.) for a late breakfast on New Year's Day. Neither of us had ever been to Java Jive before and Jeff hadn't even heard of it until I suggested it. Again, this blows my mind. I arrived before him and I was absolutely shocked when I walked inside. While I imagine the retro decor is usually what first catches the eye of a Java Jive virgin, it was something else that put a smile on my face the moment I opened the door. Every single person in the place -- except for me, oops -- was in their pajamas. Moms, dads, kids, grandmas, servers, I imagine the cooks were as well. There were race car slippers and Elsa nightgowns, spidey jammies and pigtails. It was freaking adorable. Add to it the aforementioned retro decor and it was like a scene from a movie. I immediately texted Jeff and suggested that if he had not yet left his place, he should put his pajamas back on. I explained the situation and he responded with "My people." After getting over the original shock, I put our name in for a table and waited in the awesome, old-school, gas-top stove/oven section. (I know. I know.) When Jeff arrived, he commented on the PJs and someone waiting near us kindly enlightened us to the PJ Breakfast tradition on New Year's Day. If only we had known and could have properly prepared! 

Okay, enough rambling about nightgowns and boxers. To the main event: the food. We each got coffee which was delicious. But come on -- coffee is the lifeblood on New Year's morning. Pretty sure it could have been tar and I still would have had 4 cups. I ordered the basil and cream cheese which was fantastic. It came with grits which were just okay. I'm not a huge fan of grits, though, unless they are super creamy or absolutely smothered in cheese. The biscuit was phenomenal -- the perfect midway point between fluffy and dense. I forced Jeff to try mine even though he insisted he was full. Jeff ordered a mexican scrambler of sorts, but seemed to be less than impressed. I didn't taste it so I can't really say much.

Ambience: 5 out of 5 -- ovens! pajamas! mismatched chairs!

Food: 3.5 out of 5 -- since Jefe was not too enthused

Service: 5 out of 5 -- pretty sure my tiny coffee cup never got close to empty even though I was chugging it.

All in all -- this was a great ATL spot. You get the feeling that those pajama-clad families had been dining at The Jive (I have no idea if anyone refers to this place as "The Jive" but I'm going for it) on New Year's Day for years. It seems to be the type of place that lifelong Atlantans know and love.
