Understanding the Risk Factors of Atrial Flutter
Tumblr media
Atrial flutter is a type of arrhythmia that disrupts normal heart rhythms, and recognizing its risk factors is crucial for heart health. Here are some significant contributors to atrial flutter:
High Blood Pressure: Constantly elevated blood pressure strains the heart, increasing the risk of arrhythmias like atrial flutter.
Thyroid Issues: Both hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism can influence heart rhythm, making regular thyroid check-ups essential.
Heart Disease: Prior heart issues, such as coronary artery disease or heart valve problems, often lead to complications like atrial flutter.
Sleep Apnea: This condition interrupts breathing during sleep, which can strain the heart and trigger arrhythmias.
Chronic Lung Disease: Lung diseases such as COPD reduce oxygen supply, increasing the risk of atrial flutter.
Electrolyte Imbalances: Imbalances in minerals like potassium or magnesium affect heart cells and may contribute to irregular heartbeats.
Obesity: Excess weight stresses the heart and can lead to hypertension, indirectly increasing the risk of atrial flutter.
For guidance on managing these risk factors, consider consulting Dr. Md. Farhan Shikoh, MBBS, MD (Medicine), DM (Cardiology) at Sukoon Heart Care, Sainik Market, Main Road, Ranchi, Jharkhand: 834001. Un Chien Andalou (1929, dir. Luis Buñuel)
“The simplest surrealist act consists in going into the street with revolvers in your fist and shooting blindly into the crowd as much as possible. Anyone who has never felt the desire to deal thus with the current wretched principle of humiliation and stultification clearly belongs in this crowd himself with his belly at bullet height.”
-André Breton, Second Manifesto of Surrealism (1929)

Magnus gaped at him. “What?”
“I don’t like Christmas,” Alec repeated, finally looking up from scrolling through notes on the computer. “Is that a problem?”

Tumblr media

My symptoms were extreme rapid heart rate for long periods of time; 1 hour, 8-10 hours, 2-3 days.... I never knew.  This resulted in chest pain, light-headedness and fainting.  I first went to a doctor in 2008 for what I was told were panic attacks.  Again in 2011 I went to a doctor who said that while I might be having panic attacks I could also just be having a problem with my heart.  I dismissed her thinking I still was having panic attacks.  I shouldn't have dismissed her.  After a particularly bad day where I nearly fainted walking 3 blocks to the light-rail I decided to visit a doctor again - this time a cardiologist.  I got an ekg and an ultrasound, I wore a holter monitor for 48 hours... and in the end was told I had an atrial flutter, a pretty common heart rhythm disorder.  I was told that it was not life threatening and that I could either control it the rest of my life with medication or do a medical procedure to correct it that has a 75% success rate.  It was really effecting my quality of life for various reasons, I opted for the surgery.  Apparently this is a condition of the elderly to quote my doctor, "if we were in a room filled with octogenarians one in ten people would have this" point being I'm young to commit to medication the rest of my life.
So I had surgery on my heart two days ago.  For someone who never spent a night in a hospital this was definitely jumping in head first. There's not a lot to say about it though.  I remember being prepped, I remember a lot of people running around the room poking me with things.  I remember a nurse coming in and saying, "are you nervous?" and I replied, "yeah, I'm nervous" and she puts something in my IV and says, "here's some liquid courage for you".  That's my last memory.  Next thing I know I'm waking up in the same room, it was over, it took 4 hours and apparently it went well and my job was to lay flat on my back for 6 hours while the tiny pin pricks where they entered my veins stopped bleeding.  Lots of family came and a couple friends and it wasn't bad.  The worst parts of the aftermath was a sore throat from the ventilator I didn't know I was on and having to have a catheter in until my 6 hours of laying flat were over.  Those are horribly uncomfortable.  And amazingly at 6:00 that evening, when my 6 hours were up, they took the catheter out (praise Jesus), I got up from bed and it was done.  I was free to walk around the 5th floor (I did 5 laps, it felt good to move around).  Eric picked me up some 'chicken fantastik' from the Midtown Global Market everything was good.  I was sent home the next morning at 9:00 am. Now, a day later I feel pretty normal, almost like nothing happened, the incision spots at the veins are sore and bruised, I feel low energy and want to rest a lot but that's it - certainly doesn't feel like I had a procedure done on my heart.  Here's hoping it worked.  I'll know in 3 months - it's complicated :)
When the midnight nurse came in to take over she was annoyingly chatty for someone who just woke me up.  She was new and being observed by another nurse.  She said she came from a different part of the hospital but she had always wanted to get into the cardiology unit because, "modern medicine isn't perfect, but cardiology is pretty close"  here's hoping she's right.
