ABOUT ME
Hi there, my name is Summer Sweeney I’m 20 years old and from the beautiful town of Mangawhai. I moved to Auckland in 2020 to start university at AUT, throughout High School I knew I wanted to pursue design but towards the end of year 13 I let self-doubt get in the way and basically chickened out. I was doubtful of my talents and whether design was a realistic career so I decided to study a Bachelor of Communications. Not long into this degree did I realise that design was indeed the path for me and not perusing a creative pathway felt wrong. I switched to Design which meant I was in first year all over again but I now know it was the right decision. Design excites me and it ignites a passion in me and I now know where I want life to go. I am still figuring myself out and my design style but I’m exciting to keep improving and learning more.

September LezRead: The Pull of the Stars and Isola (vol. 1)
LezRead will take a much needed break for August, but we've settled on two good reads for September. We're delving into the work of women in 1918 Dublin, as they come together to battle the flu pandemic in Emma Donoghue's The Pull of the Stars. We're balancing with the first volume of Isola, a graphic novel by Brenden Fletcher and Karl Kersch, that follows two-women, a queen and the captain of her guard, on a quest through a lovely, but dangerous fantasy world. This event will occur virtually on Bluejeans. The link is below, though you'll need to message or email me ([email protected]) for the password. 📚 📖 Bluejeans Meeting Info: https://umich.bluejeans.com/8420521186/31942 (message Kerene Moore for passcode) --- Description of The Pull of the Stars --- "A fine, fact-based historical novel, an old-school page turner. . . . Donoghue has written, with crackling intensity, about [spirituality's] power to destroy." — Stephen King, NYT Book Review Dublin, 1918: three days in a maternity ward at the height of the Great Flu. A small world of work, risk, death and unlooked-for love, by the bestselling author of The Wonder and ROOM. In an Ireland doubly ravaged by war and disease, Nurse Julia Power works at an understaffed hospital in the city center, where expectant mothers who have come down with the terrible new Flu are quarantined together. Into Julia’s regimented world step two outsiders—Doctor Kathleen Lynn, on the run from the police, and a young volunteer helper, Bridie Sweeney. In the darkness and intensity of this tiny ward, over three days, these women change each other’s lives in unexpected ways. They lose patients to this baffling pandemic, but they also shepherd new life into a fearful world. With tireless tenderness and humanity, carers and mothers alike somehow do their impossible work. In The Pull of the Stars, Emma Donoghue once again finds the light in the darkness in this new classic of hope and survival against all odds. --- Source: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/51824630-the-pull-of-the-stars — --- Description of Isola --- "Everything I ever wanted. Beautiful, lush, heartfelt, and dangerous. Brenden Fletcher and Karl Kerschl are at the top of their game with masterful storytelling and an intriguing epic. Every panel hums with life and energy and reminds us that there are still magical worlds to escape to...if we can find them." ―Patrick Gleason Childhood friends BRENDEN FLETCHER (MOTOR CRUSH) and Eisner Award-winning storyteller KARL KERSCHL (Gotham Academy) reunite on the comics page with a breathtaking fantasy adventure two decades in the making! The captain of the Royal Guard has fled the capital city with the Queen of Maar, suffering under the effects of an evil spell. Captain Rook’s only hope of returning Queen Olwyn to her throne and saving the kingdom from impending war lies on an island half a world away—a place known in myth as Isola, land of the dead. Featuring lush color work by MSASSYK (Gotham Academy) and letters by ADITYA BIDIKAR (MOTOR CRUSH). ---- Source: https://www.brendenfletcher.com/#/isola/ --- About LezRead: LezRead is Ann Arbor’s premier book club for queer women. This is literally just a TAZ scene from the train episode modified for me characters lol. The translation is:
Sweeney: Listen, this might sound phony, but we don’t know who we can trust. Listen. Look at us. We’re three grown people trusting a baby with our secrets.
Alik: I’m not a baby! I’m fo- I’m a- I’m a um, Wha? How old? I’m nineteen- Did I say how old I was last time?
Lyra: Nineteen.
Alik: Nineteen it is then!
