How can Airbnb hosts nudge you to clean the house?

After examining the readings on "nudging," I tried to think of examples within the hospitality industry - a field I'm quite passionate about. Immediately what came to mind was the way hotels subtly encourage you to forgo room cleaning or excessive laundry. For instance, in the hotel bathroom, I've noticed many hotels now include literature that emphasizes the reduced environmental impact if you reuse your towels. They remind you to hang your towel if you want to re-use it and only towels left on the floor will be washed. This technique is likely mindless discouragement to reduce water waste.  Similarly, hotel rooms now ask you during check-in if you'd like to forgo room cleaning in exchange for additional loyalty points. This is a smart way to nudge guests into helping the environment or reducing the hotel's labor costs with financial incentives.
I started doing research on other ways nudging exists in the hospitality industry and I stumbled upon an experiment conducted in Airbnbs. The aim of this research was to determine if Airbnb guests would be more likely to clean the space before leaving if the Airbnb listings had more "social" elements. "Social" elements could take on many forms, but the idea was to make the property feel more personalized (e.g. handwritten notes, photos of the family owners, recommendations of local restaurants) vs. more hotel-like (e.g. impersonal, sterile). Typically some Airbnbs include instructions like take out the trash or strip the beds - so the experiments were designed to test whether social elements nudged guests to be compliant with these instructions.
In one such experiment, the social presence of a single Airbnb property was increased by adding a handwritten welcome note, a handmade house manual drawn and signed by the host's daughter, the availability of beverages and snacks, and a free home-cooked dinner on the night of arrival. The control Airbnb property did not include these items. Guests were reminded to strip the bed linens and place them in the laundry basket before leaving via an automated email sent the night before departure. Results showed that all 13 guests (100%) who stayed in the property after the changes were made stripped the bed linens before leaving. This is in contrast to the control group, where only 55.6% of guests in the same property stripped the linens. These studies suggest practical ways Airbnb hosts could nudge their guests into assisting the cleaning process.
