It largely depends on the topics and cast you’re interested in seeing. The show is split into three subseries as well as the occasional standalone episode: Animator vs. Animation (the original created in 2006-7 by Alan Becker alone), Animation vs. Minecraft (the longest and most popular, shorts stemming off a standalone from 2015), and Animation vs. Education (the newest from 2023, visualizing high-level STEM concepts)

Personally, I think core AvA is required reading for anyone who has appreciation for past eras of the internet, UI, or principles and genres of animation. AvM and AvE are equal in quality but honestly you won’t appreciate them as much if you aren’t familiar with the topics they cover. Alan and his team do try to visually introduce things step by step, though, so you can at least get a general idea of what you’re looking at

Besides that, core AvA specifically follows the Hollow-Heads, hand-drawn stick figures created by the Animator, “noogai”/Alan. In particular you have The Chosen One (shortened to Chosen, Cho or TCO) and The Second Coming (aka Second, Sec, TSC or Orange). TSC is the de facto main character and the only one appearing in all three series, while TCO and the Animator are exclusive to the original.

The SticksFight squad - the four sticks originating from sticksfight.com and named after their colors - have developed distinct personalities as the main cast of AvM, but only take a collective side role in main AvA (Yellow has a slightly larger role than the others). Here’s a summary of their individual personalities so you know what to look for in their smaller appearances

Red - Impulsive and energetic, always the first to jump into action and with a soft heart for creatures and beasties. He’s a little simple when it comes to technical things, but excels with reading the people around him, then building off of their quirks. Since the rest of the group babies him a bit, he puts in extra physical work to prove he can hold his own. Red also tends to play around with new or out-of-the-box solutions - knowledge that extends to his pranks. Most ready to fight with his fists or use heavy-hitters like maces and clubs. (Good intro/focus eps: The Rediscovery, Texture Pack, Monster School, The Prank)

Blue - A mellow fellow! Blue is one with nature and focuses on farming, cooking, and potionology. Due to her pacifistic tendencies, Blue prefers to reason things out or find other solutions rather than fighting, but will throw herself into the face of danger for others. Otherwise she takes up ranged weapons like guns and bows. She’s detail- and aesthetic-oriented as well as graceful, but doesn’t often step outside what she knows. A bit of an addiction to nether wart, which is somewhere between an unusual snack and a drug. (Good intro/focus eps: Potions, The Piglin War, The Chef, Blue’s New Superpower)

Yellow - She loves more than anything to get down to the root of things, and that makes her the group’s engineer! …And a bit of a troublemaker, paying more attention to the thrill of a discovery than the consequences. Yellow tries to find fairness and justice for friend and foe alike. While they have a reliable, supportive demeanor, they’re also very peppy, excitable and tough with how they stand strong in dire situations. Often her fighting style takes place behind the scenes, using things like explosives or a command-casting staff. (Good intro/focus eps: The Roller Coaster, Command Blocks, Lucky Blocks, AvArcade Games)

Green - Originally the weakest on the team, but has since come into his own after a lot of reflex training (read: getting tossed around). Green has great adaptability to learning new techniques and getting creative, particularly with styles of music and architecture. He loves the spotlight and usually competes with the others or takes the chance to show off; however, he also cares deeply about welcoming in those he meets. Dashes and zips around all the time during battle, usually via fishing rod-grappling hook. (Good intro/focus eps: AvYouTube, Note Blocks, PvP, The Dolphin Kingdom)

If you’re just gonna watch the REQUIRED ones this is what I recommend:

Phew, well.. I DID IT I REDESIGNED EVERYONE! Time to present them all again, but this time with some more info, right?

Color Gang

Green (He/him) - 17 y.o. | Let's say he's literally a perfectionist okay? Green is the one of a protective friend but can annoy his brother Red sometimes. His love of his life is Blue

Yellow (She/her) - 16 y.o. | A girl who knows everything about redstone, Minecraft commands and style. Has a twin sister Pinkie (Keep in mind that Pinkie is not a canon character. She's my AvM OC). Also Yellow has a partner Red

The Second Coming/TSC/Second/Orange (He/They) - 17 y.o. | A sleepyhead but somehow understands math and physics(unlike me ;v;). They're really overprotective over their friends and have their own powers but they're not aware of them(let's say AvA VI didn't happen yet). Chosen is Second's sister. Also Sec is in love with Purple

Blue (She/her) - 16 y.o. | Really knows her thing when it comes to brewing potions and gardening. Has bandages cuz AvM Ep. 20 events. Can get worried if anyone of the gang gets sick. Loves Green and his tunes

Red (He/him) - 15 y.o. | Apparently the youngest one of the group. He's a clumsy guy and also a prankster. Got possessed by Herobrine twice. Was in a timeout once cuz messed with Yellow's staff and the lucky block. Yellow is his girlfriend and Green is his brother. Oh and his pets are his friends

The Royal Duo + The Angelic Trio

Purple (She/They) - 16 y.o. | A little shy but very nice girl. Considers MT as her older sister. Still has trust issues but is trying to fix it. Cherishes her dead mother Orchid and doesn't give a damn about her dad RB. Second is her boyfriend

MT/Mango Tango/Queen Orange (She/her) - 20 y.o. | A young adult who was a queen once just to destroy Minecraft cuz it took away her little brother Gold. Tries to move on from Gold's death and now considers Purple as her younger sis. She's on neutral terms with Color Gang. Her husband is actually an Enderman named Jacob (Tulip said that we can have our own Jacob so)

Gold (He/him) - 12 y.o. | A smol kid who is MT's brother and had unfortunately died from Minecraft. Observes his sister and spends his time with Orchid and Victim. Sometimes wishes he could hug MT one last time

Orchid (She/her) - 38 y.o. | A caring woman who is also Purple's mother. Has no empathy for RB cuz he left her and Purple. Unfortunately died from an unknown disease and now observes her child from above

Victim (They/Them) - 25 y.o. | A guy who never experienced life for once. Tries to develop themselves and find their own personality and hobbies. Currently is friends with Orchid and Gold

RB (He/him) - 40 y.o. | A ex-husband of Orchid and ex-dad for Purple. Left cuz he thought his daughter was "pathetic and would never protect herself from any danger"

Alan (He/him) - 35 y.o. | The creator himself of the whole AvA/M community. Considers Chosen and Second as his kids, but also has a real life family

The Dark Lord/TDL/Dark (She/her) - 18 y.o. | The terrorist of the whole Internet herself and Alan is her creator. She was created to defeat Chosen but she teamed up with them and confronted Alan. Somehow survived Second's attack and now is trying to change. Has a girlfriend Chosen

The Chosen One/TCO/Chosen (She/They) - 19 y.o. | The Chosen One herself who just wants to live peacefully with Dark after all the trauma she endured. Saved a kid once and now friends with her. Is currently being wanted by Rocket Corporation. Dark is her girlfriend

Hazard (He/They) - literally a robot- | A restored robot who can control electricity as his power. He's also a part of the mercenary team

Agent Smith (He/him) - 24 y.o. | The main mercenary of the corporation who can use any Adobe Animate tool. Has a small crush on Vic

Alive!Vic (They/them) - 25 y.o. | The first stick ever created by Alan that somehow came to life to get the revenge they so desperately want. They're a leader of a whole corporation and they hunt for Chosen cuz she knows where Alan is

Ballista (He/him) - 27 y.o. | The shortest mercenary of the team. He can turn his head into a tank and also adores his big pixel sword

Primal (She/her) - 28 y.o. | The tallest mercenary and the only woman in the team. Is good at archery and can get buff if needed

- had longer hair before avm season 3, it got burned by the lava and had to be cut short

- has trouble getting to sleep sometimes

- can see ghosts after getting possessed by Herobrine

- tends to burn clothes on accident when flying, has kinda given up on keeping it from happening much

- doesn't have the code anymore, still a menace

- focuses more on if he could than if he should when making things

- has contacts that they made themself

- can tolerate any level of spice no problem

- nearsighten, doesn't mind having glasses cuz they get to match Alan

- anxious when seperated from their friends

AvM Ep 33 Commentary

Gonna do a little bit of commentary and whatever important points I notice while watching through the episode, all below the cut so AVM EP 33 SPOILERS BELOW.

I actually love getting to see what more blocks do, not just the command block + lucky block cause a lot of these seem to have different effects and that's awesome. The chaos of this episode is absolutely gonna be Red's fault isn't it though, I see you sneaking off there.

Guys. Guys Yellow canonically sleeps. At some point they have managed to sleep. This is a miracle.

Red just flung the command block away to some random place is this gonna be important later? Also the creeper bee keeps showing up so that feels also important probably

Red just broke a universe oh n o and kidnapped the sentient-looking lucky orb thing

Wait they changed the layout of their house??? Why does Red sleep in the same room as Green???? Does Blue not sleep on the floor anymore??????? NOOO BLUE DOESN'T SLEEP ON THE FLOOR NOOOOOO

Also 1 I love how the orb block creature is animated and 2 they look kinda scared from my perspective, which makes sense if so cause they just got dragged to a new universe and there's this stick thing (which looks a lot like the kind of creature that kidnapped them last time) trying to get them again.

Orange is fighting much more defensively than usual, first three moves I see from them is to block an attack on Green, catch Red (justice for Arcade Games) and take out another shield.

Everyone's gotten very good at this though, I love seeing them employ their skills cause they've all gotten a lot stronger as time goes on. Blue with the potion, Yellow with even just the normal command block, ect

Oh no they've all been eaten IS THE BEE OKAY THO WAIT NO THE BEE'S BEEN TAKEN NOOO the bee's kinda okay though

Oh and you've taught the shiny chaos orb who doesn't seem to like you guys at all how to make block staffs that surely can only go well, I love the effect on the lucky block environment though it's so cool.

Red. Red did you learn that from Green. Using a pick to break lines of blocks coming at you so you can get closer to an enemy. Green used that on you Red. That feels very familiar.

Green that doesn't seem the most useful block to GREEN YOU JUST KILLED PEOPLE WITH MUSIC. THAT'S TERRIFYING. CAN YOU JUST SING SOMEONE TO DEATH???? LIKE WOULD THAT WORK UNDER YOUR OWN POWER IF YOU WERE GOOD ENOUGH AT IT??????

Blue the most acrobatic just pogo-ing their way to victory, also the slightly 3d shot of Red's sword in a standstill is interesting.

Please creeper bee don't explode by the end of this you're so sweet you make the ghast happy you make Red happy you make me happy you make everyone happy oh there you go into the hive

Red silly also Red's got two now, hoping they don't get to bring these home cause these seem overpowered if everyone's got them all the time

Idk I'm probably gonna have to watch this fight a couple times I'm just enjoying the show rn, a lot of different fighting styles coming into play, a lot of interesting stuff you can put in the staff, a boat fighting people, tis fun.

How nice they put all the blocks back and surely the shiny chaos orb won't do anything wrong and is definitely not going to kill everyone with their newfound power

Just love the fighting styles used in this, Yellow and Red teaming up, Red helping Orange out, Green thinking with portals and grappling hook adjacent, Blue doing acrobatic flying, Red and Orange are embracing the powers of Herobrine and the Warden respectively, it's all great

Bedrock cages are kinda rude though smh SOMEONE GET THE BEE THE BEE SHALL SAVE US ALLLLLL MAYBE THE CHAOS ORB LIKES THE CHAOS HYBRID BEE

Wait they actually did get the bee I wrote that before Red did anything NOOOO THE BEE NOOOOOOOO THE BEE'S NOBLE SACRIFICE o7 you were my new favorite character gone but not forgotten

Yellow just looked so annoyed while waiting for their bedrock to break

AvM’s Multiverse

The AvM Nether is a gateway realm to the Multiverse. Season 1 kept things pretty close to how Minecraft actually is with minor/tiny hints of things not being 100% vanilla here and there. However, “The Nether” was where things began to get crazy. By the way this is gonna be a long post cuz I’m bad at condensing my analysis.

For example, Blue, Green and Purple’s adventure in “The End”. That should’ve been the first sign that this was a multiverse with varying levels of reality. Firstly, the working end city ship, then the dragon going through the end portal, and lastly the dragon egg hatching. These were signs of a fact that worlds connected to desktop Nether portals have different worldly functions than others. The Skyblock world with the sentient mob civilizations (Spider Colony, Sea Kingdom, Drowned Pirate Crew) was another case where certain things just didn’t line up with what we see in Vanilla Minecraft. Also the killer bunny.

Then after the Season 1 experience with the the Nether, this allowed season 2 to become more wild and crazy with what happens because the multiverse showed that things can get wilder. And so they brought that wildness to the desktop. The Redstone contraptions completely violating any laws existing with Minecraft Redstone. Green making a working robot. The drugged chicken music battle with functioning guitars. And the big kicker, the lucky blocks, that being a mod of it’s own.

And let’s not forget the absolute amazing cases of reality breaking that is Season 3. Firstly, a more subtle reality break is the all out war that occurs with the Piglins, I won’t comment on mass mob sentience as season 1 already showcased those existing. However the war wouldn’t occur within Minecraft as Piglins flee from Zombie Piglins, and Zombie Piglins are neutral towards Piglins. However the war happens nonetheless. 

Then of course there’s the ending of the episode with the witch. And oh boy does that witch break reality so much. I’ll just summarize the witches reality breaking as, transfiguring living objects into inanimate objects while they still retain their ability to live and move, just with whatever limitations exist within the new form, alongside animating inanimate objects. 

Moving onto the infinite parkour trap, which I think is very possible due to the command blocks used. But we can’t ignore the elephant in the room that is the beacons and their ability to teleport things. This is a popularized idea for another use for beacons and has been used as such in other medias, however it’s not Vanilla, far from it actually. And then the multiple beacons being used to transport themselves between levels of the trap and even into the actual game of Minecraft itself. 

And this is where a distinction has to be made. Alexcrafter28′s Minecraft is just straight Vanilla Minecraft. No mods, no reality breaking, no nothing. Their world is the basis of what Minecraft is. Not to mention the fact that this is the one and only time we see a player character (not counting Herobrine or the Steves he spawns willy-nilly.)

Moving on from that, we have the Titan Ravagers world, which has Kaijus, villager civilizations that can develop jobs beyond the Vanilla ones and Pillagers that function on a more violent militia/gang mentality (as opposed to show up and genocide the villagers.) That world in all reality is a lot more basic when you think about it on a larger scale with the rest of the Multiverse. 

Then we’ve got the biggest smack in the face to Minecraft logic. King Orange and his Command Block staff. The capabilities of this single weapon is phenomenal. The ability to use any Minecraft command and even fake commands (like the force hold, bounded, and electrified commands) at a users whim is fascinating and very much outside of the realm of possibility within Minecraft. 

And another titanic moment that turns it’s back on vanilla, the Icon blocks themselves. They give whoever holds them creative mode and can summon damn near anything within the multiverse. Combine that with the staff (a custom creation that breaks logic once more) and you’ve got an absolutely unstoppable weapon. Not to mention the fact that it can create a black hole. But why stop at one? Go to another desktop, create a portal and boom, now you’ve got yourself two Icon blocks in the space connecting the multiverse, what a great idea. Let’s hope they don’t fall into the hands of a vengeful vilomah wearing a crown. Oh wait, that happened. And now you’ve got the fused Icon blocks. Combine that behemoth of a thing with the staff and you’ve got the most powerful creation in all of the multiverse. So strong that it was the cause of the multiverses destruction (but only temporarily.) This thing can do everything. And if you’re a creation of Minecraft itself? Get absorbed chump! Wanna stop the creation of the new and more powerful black hole? Get blasted and your very body destabilized nerd! There was literally no stopping this weapon once it got activated.

Now let’s go back to the Minecraft worlds that defy vanilla and look at the literal best version of the classical series, the Monster School world. A world not only with mob sentience, but the very internet cryptid that haunted most Minecraft players’ dreams, Herobrine, is their teacher. What does he teach? Many things. A truly powerful being hidden behind a mere Nether portal. His ability to summon Steves controlled by him and his moment patterns make you question what even are the bounds and limits to his powers. The world itself is fairly basic, however it containing the minor deity that is Herobrine is what catapults it far from Vanilla.

Next up is the Warden, and this is the one that first allowed me to realize that the Nether was a multiversal space. Once again, this is a fairly basic world, however, the backstory and lore of the Warden in this world, compared to what we’re given in terms of Vanilla, is what draws this away from your normal Minecraft world. In Vanilla it’s implied that the Warden is from a different dimension and that it’s a part of the skulk as a defense mechanism. The ancient city was an underground base that got attacked and overrun by the skulk/Warden. However in this world, the flashback we see tells us that the Warden acted as a golem of sorts, being a gentle giant that befriended and defended the villagers of the underground civilization. What happened to this civilization? We don’t know, but the playing of a flute helps calm it down in it’s (literal) blind rage against Second Coming.

Lastly, we’ve got the Note Block Universe. First, the name supports my claim. Second, mobs flying, singing, and communicating through song. All of this is the stuff I’m talking about. Not to mention the usage of the Note Block that Green held and how the lever stretched out the notes. All further evidence towards the multiverse housing worlds with varying levels of Vanilla breaking content. 

To close this post out, I’d like to give my own personal prediction for the final boss of Season 5 (since Season 4 looks like it’ll progress how Season 2 did, acting as the calm before the storm.) Since we got a hint of mods’ existence in Season 2 with the lucky blocks (both regular and Emerald,) I believe that the final boss will be the Wither Storm from Minecraft: Story Mode. Here’s why I believe this to be the course of the future. It would completely shift the setting for the final battle as 9 times out of 10, they’ll make the fight occur within the Overworld of another world. The existence of mods and the recent popularity of the Wither Storm mod would shoot up an interest in this specific creature. Plus, we’ve only seen the Wither twice, but have never seen the group face off against it together, let alone fight it. Plus this would further cement the idea of the Nether being a Multiverse because then modded content would simply be in another universe separated by a Nether portal.

This post took me a couple hours to write due to ADHD and trying to have Youtube going in the background but getting too invested in what was playing. (Probably should’ve turned on some lo-fi in hindsight.)

Heheh. It was fun to watch. Though slightly nail-biting. These Sticks just love to cause chaos. Alan would really have grounded them if he’d seen what they’d been doing. They’d all have been in the time-out box.

I always like when they include references to other episodes though.

It was neat that the lapis was activating Orange’s powers a bit, probably since it’s related to enchanting and powering things up. And another instance of just shrugging off the fact that Orange has powers (til AvA 6 anyway).

Jeez though, poor little Beeper. He saved the day. Red’s pets always die. And Red had to get a time-out immediately afterward.

AU ideas XD

AvA/AvM AU Ideassssssssss help my brain is just--

uh mentions of death below the cut :)

Royal AU/Cursed Royalty AU/Crown AU, this is an idea that's been bouncing around my head for ages but i won't talk about it because I cannot form words today!

Mango Succeeds AU: Basically an AU where Mango manages to destroy Minecraft, killing himself in the process, and after he dies, he meets Orchid and Victim, and finds Gold/Apricot(ima keep changing their name and pronouns every time i talk about them i swear--). Lots of stuff happens, Apricot is mad at King for obvious reasons, meanwhile Purple barely escaped Minecraft alive and is still recovering...

I'm Not Me: AU where the Color Squad doesn't manage to kill-ish Herobrine, and Red is constantly fighting Herobrine for control over the body, it gets so bad that Red can't even sleep for fear of Herobrine taking over his body and hurting his friends. He doesn't know what to do. The Color Squad essentially keep him in an extra-secure file, but that feels like a prison to Red, so...suffice to say, Red is going to be not okay after this >:) *me about to torture red*

King of Luck AU: Mango puts a lucky block on the staff, enough said.

If Our Places Were Swapped: Victim figures out how to bend the fabric of reality through the Void, and brings themself back to life. But this comes with unexpected consequences...like all the other dead stick figures now being alive, and anyone alive is now dead. How will Victim fix this? Oh, I wonder.

I called Beeper Creepbee throughout my first watch through!

So many references to the rest of the series in this episode!

I hope someone makes a gif of them getting pressed flat against the ceiling, because I found something about that immensely funny.

I wondered if this season was sort of a mirror of season 2 of AvM, shorter and less story focused. This episode was a little longer and I thought maybe it was a season finale - once again focused on the lucky block to drive the mirror of season 2 home.

Animator vs Animation Stick Figure Headcanon Design Details:

- Pronouns: I headcanon all these sticks as Agender but they use different pronouns!

Red: He/They

Orange/Second: Any Pronouns

Yellow: They/Them

Green: He/They

Blue: They/She/He

Purple: They/Them

MT: He/Him

Chosen: He/They

Dark: He/They

Victim: Any Pronouns (Mostly They/Them or neopronouns)

- Power States: Chosen, Dark, and Sec all have various states of power usage. It’s reflected in their eyes. For Chosen, his eyes turn red and for Dark, his eyes turn black. Second’s eyes turn green the most powers they use.

- The Noogai Sticks don’t have any feet like the Color Squad, Purple, or MT.

- Fangs! I like adding fangs for the sticks that have power or were exposed to large amounts of energy.

With Fangs:

- Chosen, Dark, Sec: They all have canon powers

- Victim: I headcanon Victim was stuck in a Void after deletion and gained void/dream powers after ze were rescued 

- Red: The only one of the Color Squad that has fangs. Gained them as a result of the Herobrine Possession

Without Fangs:

- Green, Blue, Purple: No powers or had extensive exposure to energy

- Yellow: Despite the Lucky Block ep. Yellow doesn’t have fangs. This is because it was a different possession style compared to Red and Herobrine. Also wasn’t exposed long enough

Maybe Fangs:

- MT: Channeling power through a staff helps prevent too much exposure. Although, depending on how the AvM Nether King arc, so he might get fangs later on

- Heights (Tallest to Shortest): MT, Dark, Chosen, Orange and Victim, Green and Blue, Yellow and Purple, Red

My General Stick Figure Design Details:

- Hand-drawn Sticks: Always free hand draw the head

- Perfect Circle Sticks: Use a circle tool to draw the head

- Overlapping Parts: If parts overlap, outline in white. If the body color is too light for white, outline it in gray

- Hollow Head:

Eyes (I realized I misspelled the word oops alskdjgl): Colored Sclera, White pupils

Mouth, and Eyebrows: Color Outline

Turning: The ring is always drawn like a circle, regardless of the way their facing. The facial features are not shown on the back view

Head Backing: There is no backing for their heads. It’s transparent. If its too hard to see the facial features, slightly outline them in white or gray  

- Solid Head:

Eyes: White Sclera, Colored pupils

Mouth, and Eyebrows: White Outline

Turning: Drawn normally

Head Backing: The head backing is filled
