Qui Totum Vult Totum Perdit (d.s.) - 6
A/N Out in the open
Warnings: This story is centered around a murder so there will be graphic descriptions of blood, death/manslaughter, dealing with corpses, possible domestic abuse (physical/verbal), crime/covering up a crime, shock/grief, and other possibly heavy or triggering topics. Please read at your own discretion.
You may think you understand stress, dear reader, but I can assure you that you do not. You do not understand stress unless you have driven around the city in broad daylight with a body in the trunk of your car. There was only so much guilt that a hat and sunglasses could cover.
“We should stop by the bank…take out some cash before we leave the state.” I suggested, my hands tightening on the wheel slightly as I drove.
Jonah nodded and reached into the backseat to pulled over his bag to shuffle through it. It was always full of random junk from snacks and a water bottle to notebooks and his wallet and phone charger. He carried his life in that bag. He pulled out said charger and helped himself to the port in my car to plug in his phone.
“Jo.” I said.
“Yeah?”
“Why aren’t you…freaked out?” I asked.
“I am.” Jonah answered as he dropped his bag in the backseat again. “My best friend called me out of the single most important studio session of our careers to get me involved in the murder of his wife. Who wouldn’t be freaked out? Why aren’t you freaked out?”
I shifted my hands on the wheel nervously, “I-I am freaked out. I just…I don’t know what happened at all and I think I’m just in shock.”
“Do you think you killed her?” Jonah asked quietly.
I could sense the nervousness in his voice as if he was scared of me too. I honestly didn’t know what to tell him…I didn’t know what to tell myself to reassure either of us. I loved Avalon. I loved her with almost everything in me. So what would be my motive to kill her? Would our argument about my job be enough to enrage my conscious to see nothing but red?
I could only answer my best friend truthfully. After all, he risked so much to come help me.
“I don’t know.”
Jonah nodded stiffly. He probably expected that reply from me. I had been saying it all morning.
“Well, we’ll go to the bank and check out this J person at the Lincoln motel and see where that takes us.”
Jonah and I were by no means celebrities, but our jobs certainly put us in the spotlight more often than we might have liked – especially in a situation as we found ourselves in with Avalon. Owning one of the top record companies in the country was not an easy feat and the publicity that came with it often made going out in public a bit of a hassle. I couldn’t tell you how many times Avalon and I were interrupted on a date for someone to want to talk to me, slide me a demo, or – for some reason – even get my autograph. Even Hollywood Fix seemed to have a soft spot for Jonah and me.
Avalon hated paparazzi. She hated paparazzi more than any other aspect of my job honestly. They made her nervous and claustrophobic and she always felt completely tense the entire night we were out if the paparazzi greeted us at the restaurant. Seemed like no matter the country they followed us everywhere. Even on our honeymoon we couldn’t catch a break.
“It’s just a few cameras.”
Avalon glanced out the tinted window of the rental car to the sidewalk that was swarming with paparazzi and their crew, waiting for us to step out.
“That’s hardly a few.” she mumbled.
“Just keep your head down and don’t say anything.”
“I can’t just ignore them.” she turned to me, “That’s rude.”
“Well what do you want me to say?” I sighed.
“I want to have a date with my husband that’s not riddled with strangers and their cameras.”
“Sorry to be such a burden in your life, honey.”
“Oh, Daniel, stop that.” she scoffed, shaking her head as she turned back out the window.
I stared at her a moment, her bottom lip held between her teeth and her arms crossed over the chest of the tight tropical dress she wore. I slid my hand over her thigh and gave it a squeeze to get her looking back at me. Her brown eyes were shimmering in anxious tears.
“I want to go back to the hotel.”
“No, no. It’s fine. I promise. I’ll be right beside you.” I assured her, capturing her chin in my hand to pull her lips onto mine for a quick kiss before reaching for the handle on the car door, “Come on.”
Thinking about these things only made me realize how much we actually argued. Maybe how dense I was to her feelings. Did that make me selfish? Well, I’m no perfect man. I can only push that fact on you so much, dear reader.
Jonah and I stared up at the brick bank building in front of us. The few steps to the ATM seemed like a mile. I took out my wallet from my jeans pocket and flicked through it to pull out my credit card with a sigh.
“5k?” Jonah suggested.
“Yeah, sounds about right.” I mumbled, adjusting the cap on my head as I scanned the curb we were parked in front of. “I’ll be quick.”
I stepped out of my car before I could psych myself up anymore and hopped up onto the sidewalk towards the ATM outside the building. I stood close to the machine, head down, and slid my credit card into the slot. I typed in my pin number with shaking hands and waited for my withdrawal request to go through while I tried not to think about what I was hiding in my car just behind me.
The sun beat down on the back of my neck as I hunched over the ATM, trying my best to keep myself in the shadows. It felt like ages had gone by until the machine slid out a stack of one-hundred-dollar bills and returned my card. I kept my head down as I turned on my heel and crashed right into a man walking towards the front doors of the bank.
He must have apologized – I remember him saying something to me – but the fear that our sudden collision injected into my veins had me bowing my head and rushing off to my car a few feet away without a word. I was breathless when I closed the door behind me as if I had just hiked up the Hills and back and I tried to play it off as I flicked through the bills in my hand.
I held out half the stack to Jonah so we could split the total just in-case anything happened to either of us, “Twenty-five-hundred for you. Twenty-five-hundred for me.”
“Great.” Jonah reached into the backseat and grabbed his wallet from his back to tuck the cash safely away and I slipped my half into the glove box of the car.
We had to keep moving so I pulled out of the bank parking lot back towards the main roads while Jonah brought up the address of the motel in the GPS and set the route navigation on. We drove in silence, not even bothering to put on any music, and he scrolled through his phone as we hit some traffic on the freeway.
“The place looks musty as hell.” Jonah said casually.
I glanced over to his phone screen to see him checking out the Expedia site.
“It’s like 1 out of 5 stars. Reviews say bed bugs, broken furniture, unfriendly staff. Why would Avalon want to go within five blocks of this place yet alone meet someone inside?” Jonah mumbled and he set his phone back down to charge.
“Yeah, well, I don’t think the interior design what she was particularly worried about.” I muttered as I switched lanes towards the exit for Pasadena. I couldn’t help but let the jealously come out through my tone of voice.
My phone rang through the Tesla speakers and I glanced at the screen to see Christian calling me for at least the third time since the night before. I declined it.
“Fuck. Why does he need to know where I am so badly?” I grumbled.
“Maybe you should just tell him you’re busy at work.” Jonah suggested.
“It’s none of his business where I am.”
“It’ll get him off your back.”
“It’ll get him asking questions. We really don’t need that.” I sighed tiredly.
Jonah kept quiet.
The Lincoln Motel was right off the freeway and was so closely built under the underpass that it could have passed as a troll under the bridge. Honestly, it sort of felt like that same sort of sense as I pulled into the cracked parking lot of the nearly crumbling orange stucco two-storey building. My white Tesla looked like a diamond in the rough beside the motel and I would have been worried about it being stolen if it wasn’t for the body in the trunk already depreciating the car.
I parked in the spot closest to the building and Jonah and I took a moment to prepare ourselves for not only the person we were going to meet uninvited but also to face the decrepit building firsthand. I leaned forward to see up to the second storey balcony – all the rooms being outdoor entry – and located number nineteen. This certainly was not what I had planned when I woke up that morning.

Fanfiction: Sympathy For A Downer
Chapter 41
Link: https://archiveofourown.org/works/22737214/chapters/68678841
When they arrived back in the hotel, they looked for the other band members, so they could tell them their idea. "Where have you been all day?", Chris asked them when they found each other at the bar. "Are you up to something?" Norbert gave Morrie a look. "Uh, well, we..." "We actually have an idea", Morrie finished the sentence. "Oh. And do you plan to let us take part in it?" "That's why we're here. It's about our housing situation. We think we deserve something better than these hotels here." He was puzzled that the band broke out in laughter.
"That's great!", Chris blurted out, "We keep sitting around in these doss houses. It's time for a change!" "I agree," Brad tossed in, "it's time we see the Avalon from the inside." "For starters", Matt added and they laughed again. "Morrie, you always have the best ideas", Chris said, putting an arm around the pianist. "The question is wether or not Virgil likes it", Matt pondered. "Could as well give us a treat, that old slave driver", Chris sneered. Morrie held up his hands. "Guys, wait! You misunderstood me! I don't mean another, bigger hotel, I mean no hotels at all!" Now he recieved questioning looks.
"Do you remember we used to live in a house once?" "That dump?" Brad lifted an eyebrow. "I don't say we have to keep it that way. We could restore it, give it a good beautification. And most off all, install an alarm system." "Do you plan to hide gold in there?" "No, but I'm sick of all those people breaking in our privacy, watching our every step, reporters that dress as pages and follow us around in the corridors to fill their gossip rags with stories. This has to end!" "That doesn't happen every day", Matt tried to calm him down. "Most people leave us alone." "It's way too often and also it's getting worse. We can barely move outside without being noticed and it won't be long until they start to bother us in here. In our own house we'd only have guests if we want them." "Well", Chris said and looked at Norbert, who began to speak.
"It makes sense, doesn't it? If we want us to have one last bit of privacy in the future we have to come up with something new." He sat up. "Just imagine, we can do whatever we want with this house, we don't need to do without any conveniences. And with our next tour in sight, I'm sure we can afford all this."
Their fifth album was out and they had planned a tour through Great Britain. They were finally popular enough to be allowed such privileges and surely Virgil's negotiating skills had been quite helpful too. It was the first time that their fans from outside Wellington Wells would see them on stage and the band was excited about it. The tickets sold like hot cakes. There was no need to worry about their financial status.
Chris nodded. "If you put it like this, it doesn't sound too bad." "Our own palace", Matt joked. "But no cheap compromises", Brad said firmly. "I won't live in a building lot. We'll wait until it's finished and it's gonna be awesome." "Deal!", Morrie concluded, feeling like a heavy weight was lifted from his chest.
The same day they sat down with Virgil to discuss their idea. "What do you think it would cost us to build us a residence...", Norbert began and eyed the others. "With five bedrooms", Brad added. "And guest rooms", said Chris. "And a bar", Matt proposed. "And a sound studio", Morrie decided, winning a lot of praise for that. "Hold your horses for a second", Virgil interrupted their creative effusions. "What quarter do you want to break down for this?" "We don't have to", Morrie said. "we still have this empty house in Hamlyn Village we used to live in. And that quarter was full of ruins." "We haven't been there for years though", Brad added. "We have no idea what it looks like now." "That's not hard to find out", Virgil said and then shortly paused, furrowing his brows. "I know an architect who's probably crazy enough to do this. I can't tell you the costs just now because we don't even have a draft." "Crazy sounds just right", Norbert said happily. "Just turn on your charms and he'll give us a discount." Chris smirked.
The next days were dedicated to their tour. It was another difficult time for Morrie. The media hype outside Wellington Wells was just as big. They were constantly dragged in front of a camera and asked for interviews. They also had another appearance in a TV show. If they wanted some calm and quiet they needed to stay in their rooms. And then they had to attend all these parties... For inexplicable reasons they were expected to go there. Virgil didn't grant them a lot of freetime and he and Morrie once broke into a fight because of that. Morrie felt sick seeing all those groupies swarming around. They also tried him and he had a hard time spelling out to them that he wasn't interested. On the other hand he had to pretend that he enjoyed himself at least a little bit. He couldn't watch Norbert all the time, who always stayed long at these parties and came back very clingy, as if he had to make up for something. Then again he was glad he could cuddle into Norbert when they were alone. Perhaps he just missed him. Then he was ashamed of being so leery. Norbert had his "dark past", but he did never betray him. Without him he wouldn't bear all that fuss, Morrie was sure.
Norbert didn't have an easy time, either. He too was hoping that everything would get better with their new home. Even though he didn't know how it could get better. He was still sitting on the fence. Their tour made them more popular, he couldn't hide from his fans anymore, especially not at the parties they kept being invited to. And he didn't want to hide. He loved to be in the center of attention. He wanted to savour that to the full and it was hard to hold back. It hurt Morrie and he understood that. But even if he wanted to hide, he couldn't, if he didn't want to add an angry Virgil to the scene. So he tried to bring all that in line, and it was very exhausting. Especially while watching his friends simply enjoying themselves without regrets. When he was back in their hotel room, he was mostly very tired and clung to Morrie, who thankfully didn't ask any questions.
At the end, he was proud of his success. Also Morrie was. It didn't leave him cold when his fans started screaming and crying at the mere sight of him.
Back in Wellington Wells, they started working on their new residence. The architect that Virgil had found created stunning drafts. Their own studio took shape and Norbert was happy he could spare himself the endlessly long and dry sessions in the Parade District. Everyone had his own bedroom and Norbert and Morrie designed theirs with ulterior motives. They installed the most modern safety system to avoid uninvited guests, so that was taken care of too. They had more freetime after their tour and it was a much more relaxed and happy phase.
When they finally moved in, a crowd of pressmen and fans gathered in front of their property, watching them walk in. Morrie had no trouble to be on his best behaviour, because he was sure to escape from the mass soon enough. Closing the door behind them brought peace and quiet. The band looked around in every room, made themselves comfortable and inaugurated their in-site bar when they had approved everything.
"I can't believe it's still the same house", Norbert said shaking his head. "Yeah, incredible what we got out of that old shack", Matt agreed. "It's about pulling the right strings", Chris added, thinking of Virgil. "And the right ideas." Norbert poked Morrie into the side, who waved them off. "Guys, I'm dead beat. Don't hold it against me if I won't last long tonight." "Are you kidding me? You're the one we owe all this, you can't skip out on us now." "Have at least one drink with us", Brad insisted and poured him a glass. "Sure, I don't mind one drink." "And then another one." "Don't push your luck."
Chris shook his head. "I wonder why you keep running away from all the fun. We're tired too, after all." "I'm not running, trust me, I'm way too exhausted for that." "I think you do." "So what? Try to stop me." "There, there, don't argure. Everybody can do what they want", Norbert interrupted them. "And if we want to fight, then what?" "Fair enough, but I don't bind up open wounds and don't give mouth-to-mouth respiration." "Not even to Morrie?" "He won't need it." "Oh, really?" Chris made a shocked face. The others laughed out loud. Morrie, who was taller than Chris, gave him a smugly smile. "Calm down. Have another one." Brad refilled his glass.
"Anyway, our nomadic life finally comes to an end", Morrie said happily. "Yeah, we won't run after these snooty TV stars anymore. Now, they will run after us", Matt agreed. Brad patted his shoulder. "Exactly. It's time we'll have our own parties. Can't wait to liven things up in here, make them beat a path to our door." "They already stand in line", Chris sneered. "I only need to open the door and we have a spontaneous party." "Please not today", Morrie said, "unless you want me to lose my self-control." "I see, baby Morrie needs to sleep."
Norbert stayed longer, celebrating with the others. Then he went into his bedroom and found Morrie lying in his bed. Norbert sat down next to him and grabbed his shoulder, carefully shaking him. "Hey, there. Did you get lost? This is my room", he whispered. Morrie opened his eyes. "I beg your pardon", he said affectedly and sat up. "In this case I better go." Norbert held him back. "No, you don't have to. Stay with me." Morrie stopped and looked at him. "You want me here?" Norbert ran a hand along Morrie's back. "That's right." "In your bed?" "Exactly." Their faces came very close.
"You don't have any...indecent plans, do you?" Morrie lifted an eyebrow. "What if I have?" Norbert kissed a trail along Morrie's neck. His lover closed his eyes with relish. His voice rasped when he said: "But it's not quite the thing, two boys in one bed." Norbert gently touched his chin and moved his head to look him deeply into his dark brown eyes. "I don't care what they say. I want you to shag me, right here, into this mattress, until I beg for mercy, because I love you." Morrie's eyes flickered. "It would be cruel to refuse...", he agreed. Norbert nodded when they leaned closer. Their lips met, and entangled in a kiss they fell into the sheets and loved each other as if it was their last night.
They lived in a paradise they had created for themselves, until things changed again.
One day, Norbert opened the door to his bedroom and was surprised to find a female fan lying in his bed, being very affectionate. After she had chased him through the room he hid behind his guitar and played a song for her, what made her stop and listen in awe. The problem was that he attracted more fans with this, who now filled the room. When the song was over, he ran out and locked himself in the living room, where his friends sat and stared at him.
"Why do you lock the door?", Matt asked. "Did any of you leave the entrance open?" Norbert sounded frantic. They eyed each other. "No, why? Did someone break in?" "You said a mouthful! A whole mob of groupies invaded my room!" His friends laughed. "Oh, there they are. We missed them already", Chris sneered. "Now seriously, you baited them yourself with your sweet singing voice", Brad said. "Snatched them away from us. And now you lock them out. That's not very hospitable." "So, they are your guests?" "What did you think?" "This isn't a cloister after all", Chris added. He got up and opened the door again. Outside, the confused fans were already waiting. "Don't mind him, he's a bit shy", he explained to them. "He doesn't look like that", one of them said leering. Matt poked Norbert . "Now be a good boy and give them a drink." Norbert, who saw no way out of this situation, played along.
They eventually had more visitors. The Make Believes didn't only let fans in, but started to throw parties. All kinds of celebrity from Wellington Wells gathered in their residence, TV stars, models, artists and other creative and influential people. Soon, it was a constant coming and going. Norbert found a lot of inspiration at these events. His feelings overwhelmed him on a regular basis, and he locked himself up in their studio from time to time, not to please Morrie, but to record his ideas. On the other side he felt trapped in a grotesque game. All that hype, only for five musicians. Sometimes he feared someone would notice what was actually going on, and their fame and glory would collapse like a house of cards. On other days he believed it would never end. And sometimes he wished it would pause for a while. It was tiring to play the game, to keep the balance, so he could always return to Morrie.
It hurt to could-shoulder his guests. He knew the word spread that he was dismissive. They began to avoid him, rallied around the other band members instead, whose popularity had already surpassed his. Nick Lightbearer was someone they swooned over at a concert, but they moved on when they got to know him in person. He had been mysterious for a while, but being dismissive didn't work as good for him as it worked for Morrie, who always had this cold and serious aura. The fans just stopped trying to get his affection because it was hopeless. He lost them, and he didn't know how to get them back. He was envious of his friends and sometimes started a fight with them for no other reason than to blow off steam. After that he felt even worse.
Sometimes he felt like standing in front of an abyss that was about to swallow him for good.
He wished Morrie would understand him, wouldn't leave him alone with this, watching him from a distance, showing his mistrust from time to time. It was obvious that Morrie was disappointed about how things turned out. And Norbert had the feeling that he put the blame on him.
Their relationship was already tense when Norbert saw Morrie sitting on a couch with another man, unusually happy and casual, until the man got up and left, not without giving Morrie a pat on his shoulder. "Who was that?", Norbert asked when they were alone. "Oh, you know, just the pianist of the Tunnel Rats, a very talented man. We had an inspiring conversation, nothing else." Morrie sounded defensive. "Okay...I was just thinking...He seems to like you very much." Norbert immediately wished he would've bit his tongue instead. "He's just one of the few pleasant guests that aren't blatant groupies or self-exposers who talk about nothing but themselves all day", Morrie snapped, mood seemingly ruined again. "I'm just glad you're having a good time for once", Norbert tried. "No you're not, you're jealous, and you have no right to be", Morrie blurted out. "I'm still not enjoying it as much as you." He made Norbert feel a pang in his chest.
"I'm not enjoying it." "It's plain to see." "You think so? I have a different impression", Norbert now snapped back. "They keep asking me: 'What's wrong, Nicky? Why are you so prude? Why are you so boring? Are you afraid of girls all of a sudden? Trouble getting it up?' It's a shame you don't notice that. I guess hiding in your room all thay isn't the best way to find out what's going on!" "I thought we didn't want to end up like this", Morrie said dryly, as if he hadn't heard Norbert, what steamed him up even more. "Is that my fault?", he shouted. "You could've helped me talking them out of it!" "I tried that, but give me one good reason why we shouldn't invite all stars of Wellington Wells!" "Not fundamentally, but the frequency", Morrie insisted. "It's okay for them! We still have our free days!" "We used to spend them differently!" "I can't do anything about that!" "Oh great, so there's no way out!" "None at all!" Morrie shook his head. "This is all a game for you, isn't it?" "You have no idea..." "No, you have no idea! You can always do what you want, enjoy yourself with anyone you like! And you like them all! It doesn't matter! Everybody can get a piece of the famous Lightbearer! Others have to choose, but not you! You don't know how it feels to be depending. Sometimes I wonder if you even know what love is!" Morrie left, slamming the door. Norbert stayed behind, feeling like Morrie had pushed him over the edge, and he was falling, falling...
He spent the night alone, because Morrie didn't visit him and he didn't dare to knock at his door. He had never considered to be not good enough for Morrie. But now the scales fell from his eyes. He wasn't as graceful as Morrie, he found himself rather clumsy around him, he wasn't as smart, he didn't understand music the way Morrie did, who must be tired of explaining it every time, and he couldn't hide how much he like vulgar parties. He had always admired Morrie for all this. He had never thought it could be the reason why they couldn't be together. The thought pulled him further into the depth. He started to fail at everything. He didn't spend time with Morrie and he was a miserable host. He locked himself up in their studio, not to work, but to drink. His inspiration was gone.
One day, he faced the inevitable. Their next performance was due, and he felt empty inside when he entered his dressing room. Now they were popular enough to have their own. The bright colors of his suit hurt his eyes. He wished it was grey. The face that looked at him through the mirror looked so wrong. That was him. Just a big fake. And today it would come out. Because he couldn't play along anymore. He couldn't even walk out of this room. Instead he locked the door and sat back down, waiting for something. The end of the game, maybe. At least something else than the loud knocking at his door, that made him panic. The band was outside, ready to drag him on stage as soon as they get ahold of him. He yelled at them to piss off, and that he wouldn't play a note no matter what they did. Brad promised he would break down the door and get him, so Norbert crouched under the table and waited for the threat to come true. Instead there was nothing to hear but his own quiet sobs. Then someone knocked again, carefully.
"Nick? It's me, Virgil. May I come in?" Norbert tensed up. "No...no...don't...don't bite, please, don't bite", he stuttered in between sobs. "I won't", the manager assured him. His voice was calm. "I just want to talk to you." "There's nothing to talk about!" "Then let me see if you're okay." Norbert hesitated. He liked the sound of his voice and he wanted to believe him. Finally he left his hideout to take the risk. After unlocking the door, he fled back under the table. The door was carefully opened and Virgil Dainty stepped in, tall, elegantly dressed and intimidating. But his eyes were mild when he crouched down to look at Norbert. "Are you hurt?" Norbert faintly shook his head. "Is it my fault? Did I stress you out?" "No...no...it's...", he sobbed, "just look at me! I'm such a fake!" He pressed his eyes shut and tears ran down his cheeks. "This is all wrong! I can't do this any longer!"
"You doubt yourself. Everyone has self doubts from time to time. I know you're afraid, but you can defeat it." "I can't", Norbert said fiercely. "This is the end! You have to cancel the show." "Who said you're a fake?" Norbert shook his head. "I just know it." "So, nobody", Virgil concluded. "If anything, they love you. They came all the way to see you, the Nick Lightbearer they know and love." "They don't know me. No one knows me." "Look, whatever you feel right now, you're not alone." Suddenly he had Virgil's hand on his back, that sqeezed him gently. "I'm always there to help you." "You can't help me with this. Not even you", Norbert cried and curled up into a ball. "Don't you want to try it out one last time? You didn't perform for a while. What if you only need to get back into the flow?" "No, I can't! I can't! Please, cancel it!" Virgil gave an impalpable sigh. "Well...you know, it's not beneficial to cancel a concert at this stage. The fans already payed their tickets, they won't simply go. It could get me into a difficult situation." Norbert silenced, quietly sobbing, waiting for Virgil to scold. But the manager remained calm. "I...I can't perform...I'd only embarrass us", he insisted. "I'm sorry, Mr. Dainty", he added more meek.
"Virgil. Just call me Virgil." Norbert's heart skipped a beat. "I'm sorry, Virgil." The manager reached into his pocket. "Would you like to try something?" His tone caused Norbert to look at him. The manager brought out a little jar. He slowly opened it and let a light yellow pill fall on his hand. Putting it between thumb and forefinger, he held it up. "It's called Joy. It's supposed to better your mood." "Candy, Virgil? Really?", Norbert asked, using their term for drugs. "Not that kind of candy, Nick. This is harmless. It's a medicine." "I don't know...me and pills don't go well together." "Do we have a choice?" Virgil looked firmly into his eyes. "And what if it's not working?" Norbert started to shiver. "Don't worry, Nicky. If that doesn't cheer you up, you won't have to perform." "You promise?" "I give you my word." Virgil handed the pill to Norbert, who hesitantly picked it up and eyed it warily. He sniffed at it, but it had no smell. Virgil waited. Norbert didn't believe that any miracle cure could help him out, but there was no return now. Lying the pill on his tongue, he noticed it had a pleasant taste of vanilla. Then he swallowed it.

AFK Arena - Hail to the New King of RPGs

Asia is among the consequential and influential most geos inside a game's overall worldwide success. However there's a persistent stigma: Asian developers wrestle in the West along with Western developers wrestle in Asia. This went on for years, with the 2 groups being affected by one another, but struggling to work their video games effectively across this cultural divide.
However one thing has changed within the last years as movable free to play has matured and turn into global.
Based on AppAnnie earnings estimates for 2018, within the US, twenty % of revenue is originating from Japan and China, on the rise. This might look small, though it's been a steadily growing trend that had been generally dominated by household developers. What is driving this trend is taking a look at the changes which are going on in the best Grossing charts. A lot of the latest activities which are gaining ground are originating from developers as Lilith, Firecraft Studios (Matchington Mansion), FunPlus (King of Avalon, Guns of Glory) and IGG (Lords Mobile). The shakeups on the AppStore are increasingly very likely to be from China over the US.
Lilith is a business you might be familiar with. Created in 2013 in Shanghai, they have been centered on F2P RPG video games as Soul Hunters (Previously known as DOTA Legend, cloned by uCool to generate Heroes Charge, until Blizzard stopped them). In May 2017 Lilith introduced the 1st strategy game of its, Art of Conquest and followed it with a second smash hit of any strategy game, Rise of Kingdoms (which is deserving of its very own deconstruct) in July of 2018. Bit less compared to 12 months later on, in April 2019 Lilith worldwide launched AFK Arena living three-for-three in 3 seasons.
Lilith has slowly developed to become a dominant F2P developer worldwide, and one which designers ought to take note. AFK Arena shows their strengths with:
Very best in category merchandising
Very best in class gacha set design and progression systems
A quicker progression curve on the late game retention features
Sensible choices to central gameplay style and progression to feel really different but last longer
This particular deconstruction will plunge deeper into the single methods, with a slightly different spin than ever before on Deconstructor of Fun. You see, everyone were huge fans of this particular game and therefore we chose to divide and overcome the deconstruction of 1 of the favorite games of 2019.
Core Gameplay and Loop AFK Arena is a very best in class turn-based-RPG, that builds upon the conventional best methods of the genre while innovating gently in the core gameplay as well as primary loop. Like Heroes Charge, Dragons and puzzles, Puzzles and empires, Idle Heroes, Star Wars Galaxy of Heroes, Legendary, and also Marvel Strike Force. (See our complete breakdown of the RPG category: These 3 RPG Categories Will Grow Further).
Note that I did not mention Nonstop Knight or maybe tap Titans - do not be fooled - this is not an Idle game. How AFK Arena is sold and also played is quite distinct, however. AFK along with its branding concentrates around an Idle RPG game as Nonstop Knight or maybe tap Titans. The ads actually attempt to appear just like an idle game. But misleading advertising aside, the game just features a sprinkle of Idle components in it. The game has auto battling, quick first development, and also has some automated economies - though this particular game's business model and also retention curve is actually built around typical turn-based-RPG tropes we have examined in previous times.
Like Heroes Charge and Galaxy of Heroes, the primary loop of the game is all about fighting to get incentives that are used-to level up the squad of yours. The whole game is centered on this particular loop, incentivizing the participant in ways that are different to extend the collection of theirs on the brink. You need to be acquainted with this core loop - it is in pretty much every gacha driven game on the marketplace. What AFK did differently is made a much more nonproductive being fight by automating it.
Core Battle: Fighting on Auto-Pilot
The Core Battle is easy and requires hardly any input. Like Heroes Charge (and DOTA Legends, Lilith's initial game) - the fight is automated and quick. All heroes attack instantly, with the sole feedback required being to decide if/when to trigger the special attack of theirs. When you do not actually have any interest to get choosing when to cause, you are able to tap the car button to auto trigger these attacks. In case you love the collection part of RPGs far more than you love the strategic decision making, this particular game is intended for you.
This particular game truly is AFK and also be truthful, it feels great after playing those RPG's that involve a lot of feedback (looking at Glu's Disney Sorcerers' Arena). The game feels extremely passive, and created for mobile. Minimal interactions with very little to no notice demand. The method is totally focused on who you are bringing into the fight with you and also to some extent, just how you lay out the heroes of yours. it is not determined by players' ability to cause the capabilities promptly or even needing making each attacking choice in a turn based RPG. Your focus is needed every so often - so It is excellent for being distracted during meetings or even zoning out while observing Netflix.

Venice V Hotel commemorates regional art, browse and skate culture
By Kamala Kirk
Proper Hospitality just recently revealed the opening of Venice V Hotel in Los Angeles’ renowned Venice Beach Community.
Venice V Hotel is a brand-new shop home from Proper Hospitality that just recently opened its doors in Venice Beach. Proper Hospitality styles, brand names and runs high-end way of life hospitality experiences under its Proper, Avalon, and Hotel June brand names. Led by the visionaries behind The Kor Group, the business handles Proper branded hotels in Santa Monica, San Francisco and Austin, to name a few.
“Venice V is an irreplaceable landmark on legendary Venice Beach,” stated Brian De Lowe, co-founder and president of Proper Hospitality. “We couldn’t be more excited to partner with the Lambert family to bring their lifelong vision to reality. As we continue to expand the Proper and Hotel June brands, Venice V Hotel represents a growing part of Proper Hospitality’s business – the management of inspiring independent, third-party owned hotels that have a shared ethos with the other properties in our portfolio.”
Envisioned as a meeting place for the imaginative wanderer these days, Venice V Hotel draws its motivation from the city’s famous skate park, browse scene and unequaled culture for a genuine regional experience. Located off Westminster Avenue on the Venice Beach Boardwalk, the beachfront home is embeded in a 1915 landmark structure that was formerly called The Waldorf, which was a previous home to Hollywood icons such as Charlie Chaplin and Clara Bow.
“The present-day Venice V embraces the building’s historic foundation, with a dedication to preserving many of its special original period details including exposed interior riveted steel beams, a central grand staircase, and a carefully restored elevator with etched bronze doors, mahogany and brass interior,” stated hotel supervisor Leah Edwards. “Unique details are around every corner, from the curated local art in every guest room to the striking lobby mural of Venice visionary Abbot Kinney, constructed entirely of more than 4,000 skateboard wheels.”
Proper Hospitality worked carefully with regional style and architecture partner, Relativity Architects, to bring the vision for Venice V to life. Each of the hotel’s spaces, suites, penthouses and roof cottages provide stunning views of the Pacific Ocean. The ocean view and ocean front cottages have personal entryways, domestic conveniences and sensational Venice Beach and Boardwalk views.
No 2 spaces are alike, and all of the spaces include exposed brick from the initial structure and the reconditioned elevator is the earliest West of the Mississippi. Modern touches consist of custom-made LED lighting and flatscreens offering Apple TELEVISION. The previous basement theater has actually been changed into a versatile tech-friendly area for group conferences, personal screenings and celebratory events.
“The V is a nod to the eclectic range of the Venice story, with no two rooms, suites or spacious bungalows alike,” Edwards stated. “Three distinct, design-driven room themes offer interiors inspired by beach bohemians; cozy, creativity-inducing artist studios; and skate/surf culture. The spacious rooms and suites range from 200 to 560 square feet and feature stunning Pacific Ocean views, open floor plans, hardwood floors and walk-in showers. In every space, original details from the historic building were preserved while weaving in elevated touches like oversized noise-canceling windows, platform beds, imported linens and Aesop bath amenities.”
The hotel is likewise pet-friendly and its diverse shows consists of beach yoga and running groups, browse and skate lessons, curated picnics, assisted bike and art mural trips, and more. Offerings display Proper Hospitality’s dedication to offer visitors and residents with improving experiences, commemorating and engaging with the culture of the surrounding area.
“We have partnered with Great White Venice to offer an in-room dining experience for our guests,” Edwards stated. “In your room you will see a card with the Great White logo and on the back there is a QR code that will take you to their app/menu. We are also walking distance to a multitude of dining options on Abbot Kinney Boulevard, Main Street and the surrounding Venice Boardwalk area.”
For those looking for health and relaxation throughout their stay, Venice V Hotel provides in-room medical spa services offered by Soothe, a popular mobile health company. The hotel is likewise presently using complimentary yoga on the beach at 9:30 a.m. on Saturdays, and beach cruisers and skateboards are offered for visitors to utilize.
“The Venice V is in the heart of Venice, located right on the iconic boardwalk where you experience all walks of life and spectacular views of the Pacific,” Edwards stated. “We are also very cognizant that were are a reflection of our city and want to give back as much as possible. Our Dogtown rooms display skateboards from the Garage Board Shop, an organization based in LA that focuses on education-based programs for at-risk youth, with part of the proceeds going directly back to the organization. 10% or our pet fee is donated to the Best Friends Animal Society; and Proper Hospitality’s charitable initiative, Proper Giving, has turned its focus toward helping to bring support, resources and energy toward lowering rates of homelessness in our Proper cities.”

Avenue south residence price list
A vacation isn't a vacation unless one escapes the irritants of ownable life. Because really, where traveling is concerned, is that not what a temporary interlude is for? To run off to new reality and discover a hidden existence from apart from daily trifling. To discover there is more to the person than just making breakfast for the kids or working a 9 to 5 job. Traveling light is ascertaining there is MORE to life than what meets the budget or the eye.
To travel lightly has a lot of advantages, more so on the sanity of the person. It is to appreciate the beauty of the culture without literal and emotional baggage to carry around, half of which you don't even need for a carefree jaunt. More than that, one will not be forced to take expensive accommodations because some form of protection is needed for all those material things.

The famed city of sun and sand, Miami, is a Bohemian respite. Do not expect another Soho or even a quaint San Francisco. There are no people in heels or expensive suits although this is not brought about by any lack of such whatsoever. Even if the place is one of the richest commercial beach towns, there are no airs of uptightness. Miami has energy in itself, albeit surprisingly calm amidst the cosmopolitan. Avenue south residence price list South Beach is a myriad of skin, slip-ons, shorts, suntan lotion and more skin. In a place where nudity is pride, the laidback atmosphere will make a beach trip more than just visual pleasure.
South Beach is home to 7 miles of beach area where the traveler can engage in what philosophers refer to as 'necessary boredom'. Swimming is a must, as is walking through the coastline, eating in the several seaside restaurants with access to affordable seafood, talking to pet owners or chess players, actively crisscrossing along with the thousands of bikes and rollerblades or just sitting by the coast with book and iPod ready.
If tired of the constant sunshine, go through Ocean Drive, home to the once infamous Art Deco Buildings of high crime rates. This only adds to the mysticism of the now historic area though. Don't take a guided tour. Instead, stroll through the streets of Ocean Drive, 18th Street and Collins Avenue as if you had all the time in the world. Everywhere you go anyway, you're sure to bound into one of the over 800 historic places in the district. The Streamline Moderne, a dominant area in the Art Deco style, is prominently evident in the Cardozo and Avalon Hotels. One can also visit the Wolfsonian-FIU museum, a fascinating display collection of the modern era.
Planning the trip on December? You might even chance upon the Art Basel Miami Beach, a display from almost 200 leading art galleries and over 1,500 artists. If not, there are still several public displays for artistic consumption whatever month you're planning to travel.
Lincoln Road is also a great cultural sightsee even without visiting shops, boutiques and cafes. The on-street performance artists are constant wonders for tourists and locals alike. Lincoln road now reflects what architects dub as 'MiMo' or Miami Modern Architecture. The road itself was redesigned and is now home to concert halls, bars and restaurants but these shouldn't be the main sightsee to a conscious traveler. Instead, go to Lincoln Theatre where a Frank-Gehry designed space can be seen. The theatre has a constant stream of upcoming artists whose performances are considered steals for such talents. For as little as $10 to $30, the traveler can now have access to Comedy Festivals, Indian Dance Festivals and Film festivals.
Even without paying, Lincoln Road can provide eye candy by going through galleries and studios for new artists at the Art Center South Florida.
Miami cheap flights have now made it possible to take vacations more often. If you make your reservation early, there are airline promos that can even lessen the standard price. For those planning a getaway, reserve the tickets two to three weeks before the due date. Peak seasons can also up the prices of airline services. Holidays are marks of expensive airline fares. If you can delay your trip on ordinary days then do so. Weekends are usually higher than weekdays also. Try scheduling a trip to or from Miami during a weekday. Not only is it cheaper in flight but there is likelihood that the rest of your vacation components like hotel accommodation, rental car services, restaurant reservations and others will not go up. It is best to check whether there are important public happenings during your trip. If so, airlines will most likely take advantage and jack up prices a bit higher than usual.

Designed by London studio Foster + Partners, the store will be Apple's first spherical shop and the first surrounded by water.
When it opens in the next couple of weeks, it will be entered by a footbridge from the waterfront promenade. An underwater passage will also connect it to the shopping centre at the base of the Marina Bay Sands complex, which opened in 2011.

The structure replaces a building designed by Moshe Safdie as part of the original Marina Bay Sands complex. The geometric, glass-covered building was previously home to the Avalon nightclub.
It was one of two "crystal pavilions" that were "conceived as a pair of transparent islands floating on the water".
The other pavilion still stands and contains a Louis Vuitton store.

The shop will be the third Apple Store to open in Singapore. The tree-filled store in the city's downtown area, which features hand-carved stone staircases, was also designed by Foster + Partners. The city state's other store is located within the Jewel Changi Airport, which, like Marina Bay Sands, was designed by Safdie Architects.
The latest shop is one of numerous Apple Stores designed by the architecture studio for the technology company. Recently completed stores include a shop topped with a wavy white concrete roof in Miami and a store built around a tree-like column in Bangkok.

Kelly Wearstler “My mother was a designer and took me to antique shows and auctions, which educated my eye from a young age. I’ve always been drawn to design and knew early on I wanted to do something creative in the arts. After graduating from ‘Massachusetts College of Art’ in Boston, I held a few design internships in New York, including with Milton Glaser, before I made the move to the West Coast. I started out with one client; I was referred by a friend and hired to design one room in their home and slowly grew my business through word of mouth. It was 1995 when I founded my studio. Everything that has happened since has been an organic, intuitive and heart-driven journey. I am very lucky to be doing what I love. It is a passion that I get to enjoy every day.” - Kelly Wearstler, Interior Design Maven. Born in 1967 in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, Kelly Wearstler received her degree in interior and graphic design from the ‘Massachusetts College of Art’ in Boston. She moved to the West Coast and waited tables while launching her own design business. After her first hotel project ‘Avalon Hotel’ in Beverly Hills, she decorated the ‘Viceroy Santa Monica’ and went on to design multiple properties for the ‘Viceroy Group’ internationally. Other key projects include the ‘Bergdorf Goodman’ restaurant in New York City that mixes elements from the 1930s to the 1970s amidst shades of ebony, ivory, robin egg blue, chartreuse, mustard yellow and bronze, referencing sophisticated salons of the past and the building’s ‘Beaux-Arts’ heritage and the ‘Compartés’ flagship store in Los Angeles, where she reinterpreted classic European chocolate shops of the early 1900s through a California lens. Simultaneously, Wearstler’s residential design work grew to include homes such as the ‘Bellagio Residence Bel Air’, ‘Hillcrest Estate’ in Beverly Hills, Malibu Beach residence, Evergreen Lane house on Mercer Island in Washington, Spring Street loft in New York City and mansions for A-list clientele from the film, music, art and creative industries such as Cameron Diaz, Gwen Stefani and Ben Stiller. #neonurchin #neonurchinblog #dedicatedtothethingswelove #suzyurchin #ollyurchin #art https://www.instagram.com/p/CArwPJMgliQ/?igshid=1qzrmylfbrcx2

Devlog #4 - Bye Bye Town Centric Design
We've been working on developing emergent mechanics that generate intricate worlds when powered by thousands of players. The Vision We didn't set off to build the first working MMORTS, we set off to create a world-builder. Fascinated with the intricate folds of ancient and medieval history, we imagined a game where all the lovely villages were real - run by players, created by players, involved in global trade systems and political issues. It would be so much fun to live in such a town, trade in a such a town, build, raid, siege, find, and evolve such a town. The Mechanics This week we removed the town center mechanism. In our original setup, towns were the basis for automation - characters used it to find food, reproduce, and rest in homes. What we began to realize is that while this is great for a traditional RTS city builder, it's not so great in a world where towns are comprised of multiple players trading and working together, where players could chose to be merchants, robbers, pirates, or explorers. How would things like this work if you needed a town center to keep your family alive? We decided to base automation in a decentralized way that will enforce and enable more cooperation and diversity of play. Now the world has opened up again, and we feel less constrained to the MMORTS genre - it feels like Avalon again. We hope we are communicating this vision effectively, and we hope you see its potential! In Other News I (Jake) have been in the UK this week so stuff is a bit slow at the studio. I got to meet up with Improbable in London and had a blast. Very excited about where spatial is going! Anyway - getting on a plane to Dublin - see you next week!

Kama Sutra Ties Up S. F. 'Hippop' Scene
Eliot Tiegel, Billboard, 10 June 1967
LOS ANGELES — Kama Sutra has signed an exclusive disk production pact with Family Dog Productions in San Francisco for distribution rights to the pop/hippie groups playing the Avalon Ballroom.
Kama Sutra’s Coast office has tapped Chet Helms and his associate, Bob Cohen as producers for the pop market developing in the Bay City. KS is spending S25.000 to build a recording studio in the Avalon, which will be used to obtain products through HelmvCohcn's company and as a custom recording facility for outside clients.
Artie Ripp, the KS partner who has just moved here from New York and Bob Kransow, the Coast office manager, plan to record groups at the Avalon, and working with Helma and Cohen on creative projects.
The thrust into the San Francisco hippie musical scene by the New York headquartered KS operation, comes five months after the firm opened a production office here.
The affiliation with Helms may be considered the first move toward fulfilling the desire of several pop outfits for the formation of a hippie label. All disks produced by Family Dog Productions will bear identifying logo alongside KS name, with the future possibility that Family Dog may develop its own separate record label.
Musical Workshop Ripp said last week that the studio in San Francisco, which he labeled a “partnership type of community,” would be a musical workshop. “People who don’t have the money, who want to hear themselves and get a reflection, will be able to utilize the facility. We won’t charge them anything; they’ll just have to make an appointment. This studio will help us develop musical seeds in San Francisco. Kama Sutra wants to provide in San Francisco, Los Angeles and New York, a garden where the talent seeds can grow . . . without being Broadwayed."
The studio should be complete within six weeks and include one, two and four-track recording coverage. KS will probably bring the tapes down to Los Angeles for mastering, albeit there arc several San Francisco studios which custom master.
KS expects to initially release three major hippie groups associated with Helms. The San Francisco note brought to KS would have the option of designating which publishing firm would handle their material, KS or a Family Dog operation. KS will provide complete artistic freedom, including album cover artwork design to the artists.
The recording control room will be located in the Avalon’s balcony.
Use Home Recorder Helms and Cohen have been taping several groups on a home 2-track recorder. The studio will probably be called Avalon Recording, although the formal name and hourly rates have yet to be determined.
Family Dog will receive an independent production percentage.
Ripp said that the San Francisco affliliation and his forthcoming activity in the new studio was in line with his decison to return to creatve work. He moved to the Coast, he explained, to be free of the administrative work in New York.
