The rebels stand, each eye trained on her, and she waits for one particular artist to stop gossiping down a sidestreet before continuing. They cough, embarassed, and only when the streets fall totally silent does she continue. "Our battle stands ahead. I will not lie to you. Many of you may not make it out the other side with your drive intact, and those who would wish to enslave us to the corporate empire are strong. Our odds are not good." The artists begin to mutter to themselves, and she holds up one oversized paw. "BUT! Do not forget who you are. You are artists. You dream the things those in the cubes below could never begin to imagine! Your ideas are what makes the world turn. You're the face on every billboard. The color in the water that they drink. The books that line their shelves, and the music that flows through the streets at three AM! You are here! You are everywhere! You cannot be silenced, because they can't make a sound that could ever drown you out! You are artists, and this fight is one we cannot lose!"The streets erupt in cheers, and Ember grins, the sun rising at her back and bathing the artists below in golden light. Today, the war truly begins, and Ember knows that today, the artists will not falter. Though the fight will be long and hard, she has faith that those that follow, and those that will follow them in the years to come, will stand strong. This is their world, and it will lay in glorious colorful splendor before she is done. "Take up your pencils," she cries, "Your paints! Your tablets and your violins! Take up that which those who cannot understand us fear! Today, WE FIGHT!"

I’ve been really struck this week by the compassion of Jesus towards us…so stuck in our patterns of sin, so unable to pull ourselves up out of the depths…so unfaithful even when we desperately desire to be faithful ones. But the message of the gospel is exactly that, while we were yet sinning (and continuing to sin) Christ died for us. And because we’ve come to him and confessed his name, his heart breaks for us, even as our own hearts are breaking, as we continue to sin and fall short.

And his blood speaks a better word for us!!!!! Our identity is now no more sinner, but sons and daughters. Redeemed. Righteous in God’s eyes. Because when God looks at us, he literally sees his perfect Son, Jesus. His son of compassion…I don’t have the words to fully explain it all. But in chapter 7 of Gently and Deeply and in Pastor Josh Kriehbel’s message on Identity that I just posted, a good glimpse of the fullness of this good news is offered!

Here is my recent reflection from my Old Testament course that I offered in light of much of this…”I really enjoyed spending time in the book of Hosea this week (as well as learning more about the metaphorical story from BBFP and the lectures). Something that struck me anew about the story of Hosea is the way in which his taking of a promiscuous woman as his wife signifies the way in which Jesus Christ takes the Church as his bride. Obviously, in the text Hosea and Comer are already compared to Yahweh and the people of Israel, who have been unfaithful. But it didn't "click" for me before this week that this metaphor so perfectly applies to Christ and the Church today. We are a people who are unfaithful, sinful, promiscuous (literally and spiritually) and Jesus graciously weds himself to us out of his own faithfulness - not ours. The beauty of that struck me afresh this week through the lens of Hosea's story!”

The good news is that though we are unfaithful, we have a compassion savior who is FAITHFUL.
