Produced for the first time in 1888, the Biondi-Santi Riserva was the first Brunello di Montalcino in history, and even today it is an extraordinary event when a new vintage of Riserva is announced at Tenuta Greppo, the Biondi-Santi main estate.

​Renowned for its extraordinary longevity, this rare wine has been released only 40 times from 1888 till today and each production is extremely limited. Riserva is traditionally produced with grapes coming from only the ùoldest vineyards, of more than 25 years of age.

At the centre of the cellar at Tenuta Greppo there is a dark room, hidden away from the world, dedicated specifically to Riserva. It is “La Storica”, the estate wine library where Biondi-Santi carefully refines the bottles of each Riserva vintage ever produced. “La Storica” is an intimate place where the bottles lie neatly stacked in small cells divided by vintage, naked, wearing only a drop of bees wax to seal the cork and minimize oxydization.

The Riserva will be removed from La Storica only at the moment that it is sold. It is then dressed with the original label from its vintage, including “la lunetta” – the neck label which carries the number of each bottle, and the date of its departure from the cellar is hand written on the back label. If a Riserva has been topped up and re-corked in the past, a special topping-up certificate will be placed around its neck, certifying when this delicate reconditioning has taken place.

VINTAGE 2012

The quite warm spring was followed by a dry and sunny summer begin.

The month of August had temperatures in line with previous years but with some light showers in the second part.

A cool September with some rain in the week right before the harvest, which began on September 10th.

ORIGIN

The 2012 Riserva was produced with our proprietary clone of Sangiovese Grosso called BBS11 (Brunello Biondi Santi 11), which was identified and selected by Biondi-Santi at Tenuta Greppo in the Seventies. For this Riserva we exclusively used grapes from the oldest vines with over 25 years of age.

AGEING

The 2012 Riserva was aged in Slavonian oak barrels for 3 years.

EMOTION

The Riserva 2012 sports Francos’ signature freshness proudly, granting a wonderful vibrancy to its monumental, yet refined structure. The bouquet opens like a symphony of soft, fruity notes which grow and expand in a crescendo, adding layers of aromatic herbs, liquorice and balsamic sensations. The taste is elegant and savoury with crunchy tannins and the finish is long, clean and fragrant.

Franco Biondi Santi Only 39 vintages of Brunello Riserva have ever been released from Tenuta Greppo, 24 of which carry the signature of Franco Biondi Santi. 2012 was his last vintage and we are honoured to dedicate this wine to his extraordinary talent with a commemorative label.

📍 @castellodimontepo Un posto magico, del quale non poteva non innamorarsi #jacopobiondisanti quando lo vide negli anni 80 e decise di rilevarlo e ristrutturarlo ma sopratutto di contornarlo di splendidi vigneti che ad oggi comprendono 50 ettari prevalentemente di #sangiovesegrosso Clone di famiglia BBS11 e restante diviso tra #cabernetsauvignon e #merlot . La sua posizione panoramica e strategica, ad oltre 500 mt s.l.m. giova da un lato della protezione del Monte Amiata e dall’altro delle benefiche brezze del mare. Tante le ricerche in vigna e in cantina che non si sono mai fermate, dall’importante zonazione per mappare i diversi Cru, e studiare i giusti metodi di impianti, alla scelta dei legni per selezionare quelli più adatti ad ogni singolo vino. Tutto questo ha portato e continua a portare alla nascita di nuove sfide, oggi affiancate anche dal rinomato tecnico Lanati, che vanno a mettere a frutta la storica esperienza della famiglia Biondi Santi nel mondo del vino, le tecnologie all’avanguardia e le diverse sfumature e potenzialità che i terroir riescono a regalare nel bicchiere. Il primo nato nella cantina di Montepò è stato il #sassoalloro , nel lontano 1991, seguito nel 1993 dallo #schidione . Con la vendemmia 2019 è arrivato il Rosé T&J che sta per Tancredi e Jacopo, i due principali protagonisti della sua nascita. Proviene dal vigneto Pantanella di 12 ettari, tutti a Sangiovese, e dopo oltre tra anni di sperimentazione riesce a regalare un rosato sopra le righe, con uno splendido rosa tenue buccia di cipolla e un palato fresco, energico, armonico, pieno e con buona potenzialità di invecchiamento. Ma le sorprese non finiscono qui…. Ci sono tante novità strepitose che bollono in pentola che continueranno a sorprenderci e a farci comprendere lo stretto legame di questa famiglia con la viticoltura e la passione che ad oggi riesce a essere ancora più forte.
