HOUSEBOUND, Gerard Johnstone, EXTRATERRESTRIAL, WEREWOLF RISING, and ZOMBIES UNITE
Welcome back, my creeps! We-hell… this week brings us yet another column packed to the burstin’ point with gruesomely groovy goodies! Time’s a’ wastin’—let’s dig into this F’er like a grave!
HOUSEBOUND
RELEASE DATE: Now Available on DVD
WRITTEN BY: Gerard Johnstone
DIRECTED BY: Gerard Johnstone
STARRING: Morgana O’Reilly, Rima Te Wiata, Ross Harper
I’m not even going to start this thing off with any of my patented act-a-foolishness and monstrous malarkey. Instead, I’m going to tell ya to get off yer buttocks and immediately see this film… seriously!
If my commands are not ample impetus enough for ya, I will of course give my standard sub-standard rundown and score (although you would have to be as dense as the unabridged THE STAND not to guess my rating).
Anyway, HOUSEBOUND tells the tale of small time thief and professional “not havin’ it” face-maker Kylie (Morgana O’Reilly), who is placed under house arrest after a bungled robbery. But this bein’ Famous Monsters and all, this isn’t going to be some lil’ crime drama. Nope, our pal K finds herself slapped right into a haunted house for her domestic incarceration (which makes the fact that her parole officer, played by the immensely likable Ross Harper, is a man that takes his hobby of paranormal investigation with utmost seriousness a fortuitous event)!
Now, while this could seem like yer run of the mill woman trapped in a house of supernatural spills and chills, my dear fiends, HOUSEBOUND is so much more! For one thing, this movie delivers as many laughs as it does chills… and yes, the comedy is both intentional and extremely well done!  Killer Teddy Bears, a menacing clothes drying rack, and a serial killer (yup, this movie has one of those too) that takes the time to don safety goggles before slashing through doors. For another thing, the strained relationship between Kylie and her well-meaning but slightly daffy mother (Rima Te Wiata) really adds a lot of depth and ultimately compassion to our main character who at first seems like the biggest ultra-bitch that has ever strode upon the face of the Earth.
So, with its deft handling of both guffaws and gore, as well as a superb cast and a great script (and direction!) from Gerard Johnstone, ol’ XIII is givin’ HOUSEBOUND the ever elusive top-shelf putrid price of 5 Peter Jackson Was Not An Anomalies out of 5!
Speakin’ of Gerard Johnstone, ya just know I had to talk to him about his fantastic flick!
Famous Monsters. HOUSEBOUND offers fright fans a lil’ somethin’ different with its heapin’ helpin’s of laughs, spooky goings on, and family dynamics. I really have to applaud how awesomely you created this witches’ brew, but how did ya come up with a yarn that made that whole thing gel into a nice tasty ghoulash of a flick?
Gerard Johnstone. Thanks, I’m glad the family dynamics come through. Bringing a family together through extreme circumstances was always part of the appeal, but I think the genesis of the idea was being legally bound to stay in a haunted house. I think it was just the age of the character that dictated she’d have to live with her mother, and I thought it would be a chance to bring a different kind of horror movie mum to the big screen with Miriam. The mystery element was intrinsic to the original premise, but figuring out how to let the events unfold in a relatively entertaining way was a challenge.
FM. Kylie is the type of gal you both want to strangle and hug. How much of a pain in the ol’ ass was it to reach that equilibrium?
GJ. It was a little tricky. There were definitely a few scenes we cut out that may have pushed her over the edge. Personally, I have a high tolerance for nasty misanthropes, as long as somewhere deep inside there’s a kid who just needs a hug.
FM. Did ya draw any inspiration from past fright flicks?
GJ. Yes, all of them. There were plenty of films that provided inspiration for certain set pieces and gags, but there wasn’t a single film that had anything tonally similar to what I was trying to do, so it was always a gamble to see if the final result would find an audience.
FM. Did ya make any alterations to the story as ya went… in particular to the unpredictable final fates of some characters (damn, this is hard without givin’ the whole damn movie away—the things I do for you ghouls!)?
GJ. The beginning and the end were always exactly the same; none of the character arcs changed. However, Millen Baird, who played a small town cop, was written into more scenes because he was such a brilliantly funny human being. He’d make the most banal dialogue sound hysterical.
FM. Got any more adventures of Kylie and the gang for us?
GJ. Well, it took 3 years to complete HOUSEBOUND, which made it feel like we were already shooting a trilogy, so I think everyone feels okay about it being a one-off. But I’m into the idea of a US remake. It would be cool to see what someone could do with a decent budget. And it would be cool to see what I could do with the money we make from selling it. The next project I have is a TV action-adventure series here in New Zealand. After that, it’s hopefully a holiday with the family.
Fangs, Gerard, and if ya need a screenwriter for that US remake, remember ol’ yours cruelly is also an aspiring screenwriter, and with the XIII name behind it ya just know it’ll thrill tens of folks!
Enough pimpin’ of the good name of XIII, I say (although truthfully there can ne’er be enough o’ that); back to the revoltin’ reviews!
EXTRATERRESTIAL
RELEASE DATE: Now Available on Blu-ray
WRITTEN BY: Colin Minihan & Stuart Ortiz
DIRECTED BY: The Vicious Brothers
STARRING: Brittany Allen, Freddie Stroma, Melanie Papalia, Emily Perkins, and the one and only Michael F’n Ironside!
The Vicious Brothers, huh? Well, those dudes are aptly named, because EXTRATERRESTIAL is mean-spirited, violent, nihilistic, and completely grade A f’n awesome!!
EXTRATERRESTIAL starts off prosaically enough, with the typical gang o’ foolish fools traipsing their attractive lil’ arses out to the woods to stay in a remote cabin (does EVIL DEAD exist in whatever universe these types of films are set in? Seriously, in-movie kids, just rent/download that flick and treat it as a cautionary tale). Anyway, before you know it, a UFO crashes nearby, and the interstellar a-holes that fly such vehicles decide to start menacing our lovable scamps. And a-holes these aliens are, as they proceed to seriously maim, dismember, f— with, and probe every last one of our heroes.
While the film definitely touches upon a sh– ton of the clichés of the genre, I have ne’er seen these genre conventions handled in such a… well, vicious way! The aliens, which could best be described as a cross between your typical “gray” and Pumpkinhead, dispatch humans in the cruelest ways possible, and that is a serious strength of this flick: the aliens actually seem “alien” due to their inscrutable ways of interacting with the human race. They’ll tear you apart one minute, then let you go free the next. Why? Who the piss knows? That’s just the way they roll on Alpha Centauri I guess.
This is, to me at least, is a near-perfect creature feature. The regular folks are painted in the broadest strokes while the monsters get most of the spotlight; and really that is how it should be, as I know very few gore hounds that pick up the latest releases looking for a strong focus on human drama over the ghoulish goods.
I’m giving EXTRATERRESTIAL an out of this world (ha, ha, ha… I need more meds) 5 Only Whitley Strieber and His Proctologist Know For Sures out of 5!
Well, that’s two for two! Let’s see if we can work the ol’ Haunted Hat-trick!Let’s just reach into the gruesome grab bag and see what we have he… oh, fart. Well, it was good while it lasted…
WEREWOLF RISING
RELEASE DATE: Now Available on DVD
WRITTEN BY: BC Furtney
DIRECTED BY: BC Furtney
STARRING: Bill Oberst Jr., Brian Berry, Melissa Carnell, Matt Copko, Danielle Lozeau, Irena Murphy
Sometimes I wonder what goes through the nutty noggins of some of the die-rectors in our beloved genre. Case in point: BC Furtney, the writer/die-rector of WEREWOLF RISING. Clearly this dude had about 20 dollars in loose change available to make a fright flick, so what did he choose to pick as his titular terror? Why, none other than the complicated-to-realize-properly werewolf, of course!
Now, I know what yer thinkn’: “Ol’ XIII is goin’ to rip this flick a new one!” Well, my fiends, there’s where you are wrong. While BC may not have had the means to fully realize his yarn, he definitely gets my respect for trying, plus the story he has to tell is a bit o’ frightful fun in its own right.
The beastly basics are as follows: Emma comes home to maintain after kickin’ the ol’ demon in a bottle. She of course decides to stay in a remote cabin (here we go again) and is promptly menaced by werewolves, as one normally is. The flick then becomes a bit of a guessing game as to who has received the gnarly gnibble (it’s a stretch, but come on… throw me a bone) that will result in even more lupine lunacy (see, I saved the whole damn review with that one!). There are also a few nods to THE HOWLING with some lighting coming through blinds and a close-up of some meat cooking, as well as some naked clothes stealery ala AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON.
But the main thing that should be mentioned is that the filmmakers chose to engage in full frontal fiend, as the werewolf is shown full on in all of his Spirit Halloween glory. Is the costume effective? No, but god dammit, they just went for it anyway, and that is one thing I will always applaud.
So there you have it—it’s a rough around the edges creature feature that misses the mark a lot of the time, but its heart was in the right place, and I would give the fine fiends that made this another shot.
I’m givin’ WEREWOLF RISING 3 Eddie Quist pieces of mind out of 5.
ZOMBIES UNITE (CD AND SHORT FILM)
RELEASE DATE: Now Available
ALBUM WRITTEN BY: Michale Graves and Night of Samhain
SHORT FILM DIRECTED BY: Mark Allen Stuart
Let’s close things out with a lil’ somethin’ that goes as well with our belov’d All Hallows season as a brick to the face during a Grey’s Anatomy marathon… which is to say, perfectly! Of course I’m speaking of none other than a new album and (short film) from ex-Misfit Michale Graves entitled ZOMBIES UNITE!
Now in the interest of keepin’ things on the up and up with you fiends, I will state that I am indeed a pal o’ Monstrous Michale, but I promise you I would definitely let it be known if he failed to deliver the diabolical delights! To that end, this isn’t going to be a typical review; rather, I’m going to lay it out to you creeps just why this latest release from Groovy Graves is an essential for yer horror punk collection!
ZOMBIES UNITE is a truly unique bit o’ monstrous music, as it represents what is a first for my beloved genre: a joining of forces between a legend of American punk rock and a group of Russian horror rockers (up to this point I never even knew horror punk existed over there!) called Night of Samhain—and the results are pretty damn fantastic, in my outré opinion! Ya see, NOS have a sound that is reminiscent of FAMOUS MONSTERS-era Misfits, and with Graves on vocal duties, it seals the diabolical deal… and that, my dearest devils, is the absolute best treat a horror punk lover could ask for this season!
While there is nothing as fine as havin’ ol’ Graves belt out terror tunes involving ghouls and zombies, this release also contains the album as recorded by Night of Samhain in Russian as well, so you can compare and contrast the two… which, if yer an OCD horror punk fanatic like yours cruelly, is a real beastly bonus!
Speakin’ of bonuses, to coincide with the release of ZOMBIES UNITE, the gang of ghouls over at Hydraulic Entertainment have cooked up a new scintillatin’ short film entitled ZOMBIES. This lil’ flick features Graves against the legions of the undead and plays out kinda like a cross between I AM LEGEND and NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD. While low budget, the film actually attempts some outrageous ambitions… like the music it features, the film was produced on two continents as well, with locations in New Jersey and Russia! The DVD also features an alternate take of the film, a genuinely funny commentary by Director/Writer Mark Allen Stuart and Graves, some bloopers and a nice lil’ collection of Michale Graves tunes set to classic creature feature footage.
Both the CD and DVD can be ordered right here, and tell ‘em XIII sent ya!
Time for me to catch the next hearse home, my creeps! ‘Til we meet again, Stay Spooky!
HOUSEBOUND, Gerard Johnstone, EXTRATERRESTRIAL, WEREWOLF RISING, and ZOMBIES UNITE was originally published on Famous Monsters

A nod to retro monster romps ‘Werewolf Rising’ - DVD review
A nod to retro monster romps ‘Werewolf Rising’ – DVD review
Bill Oberst Jr. is a favorite of ours here at HMUNCUT and he stars in the dark and gritty shapeshifter flick from  BC Furtney, WEREWOLF RISING. A classic nod to the gutterpunk 80’s monster movies, RISING is coming of age story for one young lady unfamiliar with a family secret she holds. Filled with a nice amount of blood splatter and chaos WEREWOLF RISING is a film any child of that time period…

I love a good werewolf flick, but sadly they’re few and far between, but thankfully there seems to be some sort of werewolf…

DO NOT DISTURB - Exclusive Interview with BC Furtney
The writer/director of this new, dare I say... disturbing, fright flick talks about his cast (Corey Haim, Tiffany Shepis, et al), as well as what he things makes for a good hotel horror movie.
Staci Layne Wilson/Inside Horror:  Do Not Disturb, without being static, does have the feel of a really taut stage play. Was this ever a consideration, or was it always meant to be a feature film?
BC Furtney:  Well, thank you. I'm certainly glad it didn't put your feet to sleep! Some folks don't care for dialogue-heavy films, especially in this genre. I agree and would love to put it on stage, if only because a play is one goal I have yet to tackle, but no, it was written as a screenplay and always meant for the screen. It's the way it is because I'm a real whore for dialogue, basically. When I'm on the page, the characters tend to lead the way and I let them tell me what it's all about. That said, there were some beautifully staged scenes that hit the cutting room floor because they just kind of reiterated things we already knew. It illustrated the fact that when the characters are driving, it's important to know when to rein 'em in, and I think we struck the right balance. Also, the story is set in downtown Los Angeles, but we were shooting in Western Pennsylvania. That eliminated a lot of outside possibilities and confined us to the facility, which my crew pretty much had the run of, with burned-out floors, five-star floors, restaurants, bars, the boiler room and a sprawling back alley, which we took full advantage of. It looked like Escape From New York back there, I loved it. QUESTION: I saw it, of course, but please tell our Inside Horror viewers a little bit about what can expect from Do Not Disturb – what’s it about, and who plays whom? ANSWER:  DND is film noir in horror wrapping, or a rattlesnake in wolf's clothing. It's not a hack & slash movie, nor was it intended to be. It lulls you in and strikes where you least expect it, using atmosphere, mood and motivation instead of machetes, butcher knives, or pitchforks...just watch out for needles. The story concerns a Hollywood screenwriter who's had a nervous breakdown of sorts and is free-falling into mass murder. He's had the love of his life taken from him, but avenging her murder proves to be the top of a slippery slope that sees him avenging any wrong he discovers, until he finally realizes that he is the problem, but it's too late and he's painted himself into a corner. At that point, he only has one choice left to make. It's a character study of one man's downward spiral and the slew of people who, for reasons of their own, get caught in his riptide.  Stephen Geoffreys plays our lead, Don Malek, and he's an incredible talent. He told me on-set that it was his first time in a lead role, which I hadn't even considered. He took it very seriously and it was a pleasure to watch him work. He redefined the word pro and we actually learned a lot from Steve. Our casting agent knew him and threw us on the phone one night. I was in a bar, literally telling a story one second, then on the phone with Evil Ed the next. It was kind of surreal, but over the course of two more conversations that week, I realized this guy was Don Malek. He genuinely understood the character's inherent tragedy in a way that few others had to that point, so I jumped at the chance to bring him in.
Ezra Buzzington plays Spitz, an ex-Marine and paraplegic resident of this skid row hotel and, unfortunately, Don's closest acquaintance. He's the story's biggest color character and the impetus for Don's descent from righteous revenge to guardian angel to mass murderer. Ezra steals the show quite often, actually. When he's on screen, he just explodes. Our DP was friends with him and suggested him for the hotel manager, but after talking with him, I really wanted him for Spitz. Thankfully, he read it and agreed. Before he flew in a few weeks later, he warned me that he'd taken some liberties with the character and not to reject it before hearing him out. I thought uh-oh, what's this about? Then he shows up with bleached blonde hair and this growling, Freddy Krueger voice. I thought it was utterly absurd and loved it. I let him run wild and he really brought the character kicking and screaming off the page. I can't imagine anyone else playing that part.
QUESTION: Is it true this is Corey Haim’s final film? What was it like to work with him? ANSWER:  I really don't know, since we wrapped about a year before he died. I talked to him a couple times in that period, but he never mentioned any new projects. Working with Corey was awesome. There was a shitload of negative press around him at that point, so we were kind of on guard for what we were getting, but he shot any rumors down the second we met. I picked him up myself and before we were even out of the terminal, it felt like I'd known the guy for years. He was with us for a week and slated for just one shoot day, but he was on-set most of the time, just hanging out and offering encouragement or comic relief where needed. I've been on quite a few sets and don't think I've ever been around a more upbeat dude, just pure professionalism and positivity. The people and rags who print negative things about guys like Corey are generally the lowest of the low finger-pointers and bottom-feeders that our industry has to offer, just glorified bloggers exercising hack journalism. Unfortunately, they create a platform for themselves just by utilizing the names of people who can get them over. A writer from People called me the day Corey died, fishing for gossip from our set. He couldn't have cared less about our film. I hung up on him. QUESTION: Tiffany Shepis is truly one of our favorite gals. And it’s so nice to see her do some more, well, I suppose the word is serious acting in a movie. Was she your first choice, and how did you snag her for the role? ANSWER:  My sentiment exactly. She was the first and only choice. I was working as AD on one of her films in late '08 and we got to talking. I realized she was way deeper than a lot of her credits suggested and wondered why we rarely got to see what I saw just hanging out with her. When we wrapped, I dropped the script on her and she said she'd read it on the plane ride home. She called a few days later and said, "I read your script and it didn't suck." Which, in Shepis-speak, means let's do it, you know? So we hammered out the particulars and got to work. She was the first person cast. QUESTION: Is the main protagonist / antagonist based on anyone in particular? (if so, hopefully only in spirit and not in deed!) ANSWER:  Nope, Don Malek is pure fiction. If he sounds like someone you know, I'll let you decide what to do with that information. Personally, I know a few people I'd send to visit him, in hopes that they might not make it back. I should be careful what I say in this new era of thought police. The black helmets might come and pick me up for some indefinite detention. QUESTION: On scale of Psycho to Hostel, just how gruesome and gory would you say Do Not Disturb is? ANSWER:  We're definitely closer to Psycho than Hostel. Like I said, DND is really classic-styled, character-driven film noir. When I was a little kid, my grandfather had stacks and stacks of those Detective magazines in his house, with busty femme fatales always tied up on the covers and some shadowy menace in a fedora closing in for the kill...or worse. The stories in those old mags were pretty adult and taboo, and that's the vibe we went for here. I absolutely despise the swath of our culture today that depicts grown men who act and dress like 5-year-olds, wailing petulantly about their problems while dressed in baggy shorts, sneakers and floppy baseball caps. I don't even know if that's art imitating life or life imitating art anymore, but those guys don't speak for all of us. I wanted to make a genre film that felt like a worn and weathered pulp paperback pulled out of the pocket of a pair of long-forgotten dress pants in the basement, that featured adult characters doing adult things. No grown adolescents allowed. I think we achieved that.  QUESTION: There are so many horror movies set in temporary lodgings – from the two I mentioned above, to The Shining, to 1408, to Vacancy and Motel Hell and even the recent The Innkeepers – what is it about that backdrop which invites horror? Can you recommend a favorite of yours, which you think would play nicely as a double feature with Do Not Disturb? ANSWER:  I love all the films you just mentioned, so thanks for roundabout putting us in their company. I prefer Friedkin's Bug and wouldn't at all mind sharing that double-bill. I think the idea that vastly different people with vastly different realities and vastly different intentions can inhabit the same intimate space, within just a few hours or sometimes minutes, of each other, kinda raises a red flag of what-if, you know? Like, what if the guest before you drowned a hooker in the tub and now you're taking a bubblebath? What if the previous tenant OD'd on sleeping pills and you're serenely napping where they drew their last breath? It isn't that far-fetched a concept. My wife and I were on a road trip last year and we stopped at a Super 8 Motel that just felt wrong. I noticed a dark stain on the carpet under the bed and stripped the sheets to find an outline of a person in dried blood on the mattress. True story. We checked right out and drove for another hour. No offense to Super 8, I'm sure that wasn't their corporate policy, but hey...they could've replaced the fuckin' mattress, right?
