Somewhere in the development cycle for the 2009 car, an aerodynamics engineer at Honda discovered that they could use a loophole in the regulations to design a car with 2 diffusers, one on top of the other. Now diffusers make downforce, which makes a car fast. It doesn't take much of a mathematician then, to reason that a car with 2 diffusers will be much faster. With this discovery, the 2009 Honda RA109 had massive potential in it. Unfortunately, some hiccups* in 2008 caused Honda to suddenly and dramatically abandon ship well before the season even began. The team, along with all its assets, was bought by one Ross Brawn of England for a single pound. As Honda did not have the courtesy to supply even an engine for the next year, the team had to awkwardly adapt the car for Mercedes engines, making it overweight and unbalanced.

The now re-christened Brawn BGP 001 made an uneasy debut at the final test, but despite all its issues, it was extraordinarily fast. Jenson Button ended up winning 6 of the first 7 races, as the team fended off protests from a dull Ferrari and McLaren against its diffuser design, which the FIA had cleared to race. Clearly, the season was supposed to be a cakewalk, right? Wrong. The season was a race against time on two fronts - development and degradation.

Remember that Brawn GP was a cash-strapped entity running on fumes of sponsor largesse. They had very little money for in-season testing and development. Meanwhile their double diffuser was adapted by Red Bull, Ferrari and McLaren with considerable effort midway into the season, allowing their drivers to taste some champagne themselves. Add to this, the team had only had the money to build three chassis,** and with use they started losing their rigidity. The BGP 001 that crossed the line in Abu Dhabi is estimated to have lost as much as 0.3s a lap to the one that set out in Australia due to this chassis wear. That Button made do with a single chassis over the course of the year is a testament to his skill.

Regardless, he was able to fend off the forces of Red Bull, McLaren and Ferrari long enough to become the World Driver's Champion of 2009, with Brawn GP becoming Constructor's Champions on debut. The team was then sold to a German car maker that had last entered F1 in 1955, as many involved in this zeitgeist parted ways. I have no idea what became of it.
