Anti - Flag Biografi

Rancid Biografi

Biografi NOFX

10 reasons Kings Park isn’t just for tourists

We know Kings Park is always near the top of the list for people visiting Perth wanting that postcard-perfect vista shot, but it has so much more to offer than a quick photo stop.

Kings Park is so handy to, well, everything. Practically in Perth’s CBD, you don’t have to venture far to be immersed in the glory of this urban oasis. You can squeeze in a sneaky walk (or run!) on your lunch break, take in a post-work picnic as the sun sets, or make a whole day of it.

It’s humongous, so no matter how many people are there, you won’t ever feel like it’s crowded (oh, except for during special events of course). There’s 400 hectares of bushland, 17 of which is the Western Australian Botanic Garden. That’s a lot of hectares to prance about in.

1Botanical bliss. Yes, let’s talk about those gardens. You don’t have to be a botanist to appreciate the wonder. But, if you are, you can get up close and personal to analyse more than 2000 (yep, you heard me!) plant species indigenous to WA. If you’re a novice, but keen to learn, the Bushland Nature Trail brochure will give you a head start. And, the headline act – a 750-year-old boab tree that made its way down from the Kimberley. Now that is not something you see everyday. 

2Wildflower photography heaven. If you really take your botany seriously, you’ll love Kings Park’s abundance of WA”s famous wildflowers. While the best time to stop and smell the wildflowers is July to October, you’ll find them in bloom all year round, so you can take those Insta-worthy snaps any time. Or, turn them into great pieces of art to grace your walls or gifts for friends and fam.

3Walk it, baby; own it. If the thought of pounding the pavement to burn some kJs is not your thing – and hey, I get that – slow it down a notch and enjoy the innumerable walks available at Kings Park. The Bushland Nature Trail is a good place to start, and will introduce you to Kings Park’s diverse flora and fauna, including 70 types of birds! And, it’s an easy 25-minute loop, so you don’t have to sweat it (literally). And there are plenty of other options where that came from.

4Learn yourself. If you want to learn even more about the botanical side of things, there’s free, regular guided walks from winter to spring. Themed around Kings Park’s different offerings, and suitable for all abilities, there’s a whole bunch to choose from. Treetop views. If you’re more of a big-picture kinda guy or gal, and like to take in the scenery from a higher perspective, the Lotterywest Federation Walkway is for you. It’s an easy 620-metre stroll, for which you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views over Perth city and the Swan River. 222 metres of it is a super cool glass-and-steel bridge that passes through the canopy of eucalypts. Deciduous and delicious.

5Step it up. But, if you are into physical challenges and want to step into your summer body, get into your hottest activewear and give Jacobs Ladder or the DNA Tower a crack– or both! Climb 101 spiral steps to the top of the aptly named DNA Tower and be smacked with views around Kings Park, the Swan River and even glimpses of Rotto. If 101 steps aren’t enough, Jacobs Ladder has 242! Up-down, up-down, pound, pound, around, around. Or, if you’re really keen, you can MYO (make your own) ‘Tough Mudslide’-esque obstacle course or biathlon!

6Dig it up. If you want to take your knowledge – and plants – home with you, you can participate in a Dig it with Coffee sesh, where you’ll not only learn all about the native plant life in Kings Park, but how to make them flourish in your own backyard. You’ll hear from garden experts as you sit back and relax with a coffee (and some cake if you fancy it!) from the gorgeous Zamia Cafe. You can buy plants from the Friends of Kings Park native plant sale. (Bookings essential).

7Pay your respects. Kings Park state memorial isn’t just for ANZAC Day. If you want to pay your respects to military servicemen and women, as well as the state war memorial, you can visit the Flame of Remembrance, the Whispering Wall and the many memorials in the area by taking yourself on a self-guided memorials walk, like the Kokoda Track Walk.

8Shop, then quaff. When retail therapy supports a good cause, it really is a no-brainer! Enjoy a spot of retail therapy at the Aspects of Kings Park gallery shop, or purchase some beautiful artwork from the Aboriginal Art Gallery, proceeds of which support Australian artists and conservation works for Kings Park and Botanic Garden. Win-win. And then grab a bite and a beverage from Kings Park Kiosk or the Botanical Café.

9Meet the indigenous artisans. Speaking of the Aboriginal Art Gallery, you can not only admire and/or buy the beautiful artwork, but meet and talk with the artists, watch them work, learn about their story through music and dance performances from some of Western Australia's leading Aboriginal artists. Learn about indigenous Kings Park is rich with indigenous significance, and taking the very footsteps of this country’s ancestors is a powerful experience. Start with the Boodja Gnarning Walk to understand the importance of Kings Park, the surrounding land and water, and native flora to the Nyoongar people. The walk splits into the 2.4-kilometre Maarm Track, which highlights the land and trees used by Nyoongar people for tools, shelter, hunting and spiritual purposes, and the 1.8-kilometre Yorga Track, which highlights Nyoongar women’s traditional roles and responsibilities, including the gathering of food, tool and shelter implements and medicines from the area now known as the Water Garden. You’ll come away feeling more knowledgeable, and probably a little moved.

10Date night done right! If you fancy a pre- or post-dinner romantic walk, Kings Park is the place to be. So if you’re looking for venues nearby, try Zafferano’s at The Old Swan Brewery, and of course, the hill-top fave, Fraser’s.

11Get your concert on. Whether you’re in the mood for some chilled-out, lie-on-the-grass style acoustic tunes, some fine wine and gourmet picnic accompanied by the WASO, or you prefer to rock out to some classic old-school, Day on the Green style, Kings Park pulls in the crowds for plenty of concerts, year-round. Transformative Innovation in Malls - Part 2

3. Create an ‘agile lease’ (see Chapter on topic)

We don’t envisage that leases will disappear altogether. But what would introduce the necessary flexibility to empower retailer-driven innovation is the notion of an agile lease.

Innovation: Change the Standard Specialty Lease to an Agile Lease

This is a lease where the key commercial terms (duration, cost, usage clause etc) are contained on ONE sheet, which then can be changed by sitting down in a single meeting or phone call and counter-signed and legally take effect. If new concepts can grow and establish themselves without the constraints and costs of for instance trading hours and with the guaranteed ability to vary the usage to fine-tune the offer to see what works, their chances of success are greatly enhanced.

There are strong socio-cultural trends that suggest that the value of these legal agreements are being eroded significantly anyway. In fact, the recent Sumo Salad/ Scentre debacle points to the absolute necessity.

5 Every centre a mixed-use centre

Creating a TRUE mixed-use centre would mean incorporating many of the following uses - possibly even all of the areas below.

Residential

Alternative

Tourism

This is in essence a risk diversification strategy.

Start by adding maximum residential living to the centre. That is, to use an Aussie social convention a matter of BYO Customers. This is obviously not necessarily easy or applicable in every instance, but on the whole, most retail centres are in prime real estate locations with excellent infrastructure as well as often with community facilities.

It may require serious, long-term lobbying to overcome zoning issues, height limits and what not, but political opinion aside, I find it difficult to visualise any shopping centre that could not accommodate hundreds, maybe thousands of living units above it.

Great use of space, roads/parking etc can be expanded (possibly going underground) more easily than entirely new land to be found somewhere else. The accommodation could be for residents, holiday or even student accommodation.

Alternative use could include spaces often found in event/convention spaces. I can imagine ‘Launchpads’ = space in the shopping centre for experiences. Shop selling yoga clothes can use this space to run a yoga class once a week and promote their clothes. These are spaces to learn, explore and meet.

Ensure some spaces are large, flexible and multi-purpose. For a shopping centre to be a true marketplace it will  need to cater for a events (we lost our centre courts to kiosks).

These spaces should be  accessible AFTER hours. The idea is to work towards a mix of activities and an offer that extends the trading period of a shopping centre. In a world of shift work, remote work, permanent casual work, the gig economy, the idea of a 9-5 centre will become a quaint relic. The town square is not only applicable to large regional centres with external space to use; it can be replicated in every centre, and it starts by reclaiming the old centre court.

Placemaking is gaining traction in shopping centres. The argument for this is easy; the payoff is a bit harder. But if shopping centres are to be function as public spaces, it has consider topics such as Biophilia . An environment devoid of Nature may have a negative effect, with a potentially undesirable impact on health or quality of life. Malls have the social obligation to manage these spaces differently.

Placemaking relies on high quality common areas, a blurred line between public and private spaces, and the integration of traditional and non-traditional retail uses like local government offices, community centres, medical, childcare and education services.

It is critical that malls be about much more than stores. We see the mix of tenant/public space shifting from the current 70/30 to a significantly different split. When this happens, these expanded public spaces will need to be planned and programed over the year much like an exhibition. They will be managed more like content and media, instead of real estate.

Mckinsey suggests that malls must become like retailers, isolate and quantify the consumer touch points that are most responsible for driving satisfaction.

This means applying recent retail innovations like customer journey mapping in the mall, tracking it and using the information to improve the experience.

6. Crack the Code

Any landlord of any material significance could create a crack team of retail professionals that can scour the world and create a new concept. Landlords have capital, data that will aide insight and decision-making and  It will likely be a franchise concept, and as soon as it attains critical mass, it can be sold.

It is really Landlords adopting a BYO attitude to retail mix. Landlords should:

get better at judging a retail talent

have retail teams working on partnership with retailer

be willing to perhaps operate retail shops themselves

(When you are funding the retail concept through fitout contributions anyway, you might as well have more control.) Mckinsey says that malls (should) see themselves as customer-facing providers of shoppable entertainment. (For example, the Menaissance: men are taking the lead in spending.)

7. Toe-prints

I borrowed this term from Liz Holland, even though our use is a bit different. It is about exploring the multi-channel crossover opportunities.

For example, provide space for customers/patrons to:

see and try the products for eCommerce retailers (shared space).

pick online orders up

provide showroom spaces

These types of opportunities are designed to make the shopping mall a place where non-traditional retailers (like eCommerce merchants) can get a micro-footprint (or a toeprint as Liz calls it) in an environment before they are ready to commit to bigger, longer-term arrangements.

These examples are not an exhaustive list - you will see that it involves all four elements of the shopping centre mix to some extent, so I believe it has the potential to be TRANSFORMATIVE.

A history of 'Rancid'!

One of the cornerstone bands of the '90s punk revival, Rancid's unabashedly classicist sound drew heavily from the Clash's early records, echoing their left-leaning politics and fascination with ska while adding a bit of post-hardcore crunch. While some critics dismissed Rancid as derivative, others praised their political commitment, surging energy, and undeniable way with a hook. And, regardless of critical debate over their significance, the band's strengths made them perhaps the most popular neo-punk band after Green Day and the Offspring. Their third album, 1995's ...And Out Come the Wolves, made them a platinum-selling sensation and an inescapable presence on MTV and modern rock radio. While they never translated that success into an enormous blockbuster record (like the aforementioned bands who hit the mainstream first), that wasn't necessarily their ambition, choosing to stay with the independent punk label Epitaph and the creative freedom it allowed them. That decision helped them retain a large, devoted core audience as revivalist punk-pop began to slip off the mainstream's musical radar.

Rancid were formed in 1991 by San Francisco Bay Area punk scenesters Tim Armstrong (guitar/vocals) and Matt Freeman (bass). Lifelong friends and longtime punk fans, the two had grown up together in the small working-class town of Albany, near Berkeley; they'd also played together in the legendary ska-punk band Operation Ivy, Armstrong as "Lint" and Freeman as Matt McCall. After Op Ivy disbanded in 1989, Armstrong and Freeman spent a few weeks in the ska-punk outfit Dance Hall Crashers, as well as Downfall; Freeman later briefly joined the hardcore band MDC. Meanwhile, Armstrong was waging a battle with alcoholism (but, fortunately, winning), and to help keep his friend occupied, Freeman, suggested they escape their day jobs by forming a new band, which became Rancid. The duo added drummer Brett Reed, Armstrong's roommate and a familiar presence on the Gilman Street scene where Operation Ivy had cut their teeth. Just a couple of months later, Rancid were performing live around the area, and in 1992 they released a five-song debut EP on Lookout! Records.

The EP caught the attention of Epitaph Records founder/Bad Religion guitarist Brett Gurewitz, and Epitaph signed Rancid to a highly favorable contract guaranteeing the group a generous amount of creative control. The band's eponymously titled debut full-length album arrived in 1993, pursuing an uptempo hardcore/skatepunk style with few hints of early British punk. Rancid had been seeking a second guitarist, and Green Day's Billie Joe Armstrong even played live with the group at one show. They pursued Lars Frederiksen, a Bay Area resident who'd joined a later incarnation of U.K. Subs and was performing with the band Slip; Frederiksen initially declined Rancid's invitation to join, but when Slip disbanded, he quickly changed his mind and came along on Rancid's first tour. Frederiksen made his recording debut on the early-1994 EP Radio Radio Radio, a side dalliance on Fat Wreck Chords. Released later that year, Let's Go was the album that made Rancid's name in the punk underground. It marked the beginnings of their fascination with the 1977-era London punk scene, particularly the Clash, and it also provided their first widespread exposure when MTV picked up on the video for the single "Salvation." Let's Go quickly went gold, and with the breakout mainstream success of Green Day and the Offspring that year, major-label interest in Rancid quickly escalated into a full-fledged bidding war (even Madonna's Maverick imprint got in on the action). Ultimately, Rancid decided that no major could offer them the level of decision-making power that Epitaph had given them, and stayed right where they were.

Rancid scored a major success with their next album, 1995's ...And Out Come the Wolves, whose title was a reference to the near-predatory interest in signing the band. The Clash fetish was even more pronounced, augmented with a greater interest in the original 2-Tone ska revival the Clash had helped influence (bands like the Specials). "Ruby Soho" was a major MTV and radio hit, and "Time Bomb" and "Roots Radicals" were hits in their own right. The album went platinum and made Rancid one of the most visible punk bands around. They played the 1996 Lollapalooza Tour, and afterward took a short break, their first since becoming a quartet. During that time, Freeman played with former X singer Exene Cervenka in Auntie Christ, while Armstrong set up the Epitaph subsidiary Hellcat; he and Frederiksen both began doing production work for other bands they hoped to spotlight.

Rancid returned in 1998 with the even more ska-heavy Life Won't Wait, a guest star-loaded affair that featured members of ska bands the Specials and Hepcat, Dicky Barrett of the Mighty Mighty Bosstones, dancehall reggae star Buju Banton, and Agnostic Front vocalist Roger Miret. While it didn't cross over on the level of ...And Out Come the Wolves, it demonstrated that Rancid retained a substantial fan base. For the 2000 follow-up, their second self-titled release, the group largely scrapped its ska-punk side, recording a visceral, hardcore-influenced album that blasted through 22 songs in under 40 minutes (in contrast to it's two lengthy predecessors). Perhaps for that reason, Rancid received a highly positive response from the punk community. The band's installment in the BYO split series arrived in March 2002 alongside NOFX, each band covering six of the other's songs. Rancid's next full-length, Indestructible, followed a year later; though technically released through Hellcat, the album was their first that got additional support from a major label via Warner Bros. The highly personal album (songs were inspired by the deaths of family and friends, and Armstrong's bitter 2003 divorce from Distillers frontwoman Brody Dalle) hit number 14 on the Billboard charts, as "Fall Back Down" did well on radio and MTV.

Following the record's release, Rancid went on something of a hiatus, the group's members working on various side projects: Armstrong continued work with the Transplants, his band with Rob Aston and blink-182 drummer Travis Barker, and collaborated with various artists, including P!nk; Frederiksen further played with his side band Lars Frederiksen & the Bastards; Freeman briefly joined Social Distortion from 2004-2005. By the spring of 2006, a revitalized Rancid regrouped; they toured worldwide starting that summer to the delight of fans. Several shows, however, had to be postponed and rescheduled after Frederiksen collapsed on-stage in Montreal, apparently suffering a seizure. Soon enough, though, he was back and the band continued on. Rancid promised a new record for the following year, and Armstrong released his first solo album, A Poet's Life, that fall through Epitaph by releasing songs online for free download over the course of several months. With the band getting back on track, it then came as a shock in November 2006 when Reed announced he was leaving Rancid after 15 years; the split appeared to be amicable and he was soon replaced behind the kit by ex-Used drummer Branden Steineckert. After taking some time to look back at their luminous history with a B Sides and C Sides compilation, a music videos collection, and an online webisode retrospective dating back to the bandmembers' days in Operation Ivy, Rancid returned to the studio to record 2009's Let the Dominoes Fall at George Lucas' Skywalker Sound Studio with Brett Gurewitz producing.

It would be another five years before fans got another Rancid album. The band entered the studio in 2011 and did some recording, but Armstrong eventually abandoned the sessions in favor of doing another Transplants album and recording solo under the name Tim Timebomb. One new Rancid track from the sessions, bluntly titled "Fuck You," was released in 2012. That same year, the massive online-only box set Essentials compiled their back catalog on 7" vinyl. In 2013, Transplants released their third album, In a Warzone, after which Rancid got back together to tour and work on their eighth album. Again produced by Gurewitz, the back-to-basics effort, Honor Is All We Know, was released in late 2014. Following the release, Armstrong stayed busy with a regular radio show, solo gigs, and production work (most notably for Hellcat band the Interrupters); Frederiksen played in two groups, the Old Firm Casuals, and Oxley's Midnight Runners; and the band played a handful of shows in 2015 and 2016. They also reentered the studio with Gurewitz to make their ninth album, Trouble Maker, which was released in June of 2017.

"Work is the curse of the drinking classes"- Oscar Wilde, so says the bathroom wall of the waterside bar, the Anchor, of sweet and perfect Cambridge, UK.

More than a few weeks ago now I had an important meeting in London; to summarize how it went, I'll just say I arrived less than an hour before it started (as per the preference of my boss), ruined my shoes with rain, got blisters while hauling ass to the office and only half the leave behind usbs were loaded by the time I sat down across from my clients. Cut to two hours later and I was eating a Cadbury egg in my hotel king with the blinds drawn waiting on the potpie I'd ordered to scarf down before I turned in for blissful oblivion. Two more hours after that, I woke up, had a couple conference calls from my pillow throne and then took UK public transit for the first time to visit Jack in Camden. First of all, I felt like I was entering Narnia walking down the stairs of the tube... or about to walk out onto platform 9 3/4 (more on this later), or have my life split into two scenarios changed by a split second.. it was exactly like the movies and I was enchanted, and annoyed with myself for having been intimidated before and just ubering my heart out each time I come here. Camden is a much older and much edgier Wicker Park. So I fell hard and fast for the walls graffiti-ed to the teeth, body heat pouring out of open pub doors, stories of music icons around every corner and the overall juxtaposition between quaint and grimy. Jack and I got fish and chips at cute place called Poppies and then stepped back in time when we entered the Elephants Head wherein mod hipsters (if that's a thing) were dancing to oldies like they were in the 60s. It was the type of conundrum where I wanted to stare at them in their, to me, costumes and Factory dance moves, but not so much that I seemed uncool.

Anyway.. that Friday night was for cheeseburgers, old CO friends, and St. Paul and the Broken Bones. Also known as the inaugural International Concert Club show! At the risk of sounding like he-who-must-not-be-named, my memories from the performance are monosyllabic hyperbole: Great time. Best night ever. He was amazing. Everyone was dancing. The best, ask anyone. But really, this was my first time seeing the band and they have such a strange and funny stage presence. St. Paul himself kept demanding adoration and I was, each time, annoyed and then immediately compliant. He ducking earned it.

Next day, Cambridge. We awoke early, some might say too early, took three showers and were out the door by 9:00. Feeling accomplished and bizarrely prepared for the day I think is what ultimately did us in. Lauren had everything planned perfectly. And then Father Time (is he a thing?) thought he'd teach is a lesson. We needed to fill Lauren's Oyster card only to find out it's cash only and it had a negative £5.50 balance. Ok so we got that sorted, then Lauren can't find her phone. And as 1) it's her phone and 2) maybe more immediately important, had our train and boat tickets on it, we freaked out. For about 2 minutes then realized we can use anyone's phone to access said tickets. Crisis averted. Next is the bus to kings cross- the one for which we needed to fill the metro card and to which we had to run to make and then missed anyway. In the end the card reader was down rendering our earlier errand useless. We arrived at Kings Cross with 15 minutes to spare before our train. But a couple of things had to happen first: Skye wanted to see platform 9 3/4 (her obsession with HP slowly revealed itself over the next 24 hours of our acquaintance), and we all wanted coffee. So obviously coffee will out and we queued up at Starbucks. I must be too used to slurring my words hoping people will understand what I want but not hear me clearly enough to criticize my French because even though I was speaking in English when I asked for a croissant the cashier person pushed porridge on me and I didn't fight her too hard. I was just in my pre-coffee haze and kind of mumbled "porridge? S'like oatmeal? Ok..". Anyway, between two porridges, one maybe gluten-free yogurt, three espresso laden concoctions, and 3+ minutes of discussion on how many spoons we required we were going to miss our train. So we decided to claim innocence/ignorance and just board the next one. Plus this would give us time to geek out on Harry Potter stuff. But imagine three women showing mild interest in a location recreation from a favorite reading pastime (or current for me since I just finished the series) and then imagine 50+ tourists queuing up with house scarves and wands to take their picture pretending to slam into the wall. (Lauren, please please please toss that picture into the comments section. It is the absolute perfect illustration of the.. situation.) Very happy with ourselves again, we start to walk to the train early to get some seats together, but we pass LEON which has for-sure gluten-free stuff. So Skye gets her porridge on and Lauren and I wait. All the time in the world. We might as well have been whistling. In short, Skye left her cc at LEON, and there was a confusing PA announcement about which car we needed to be that by the time we got in our seats, the porridges were cold and I was sweating. At this point we'd established a theme for the day of being overly confident of our timing abilities, having to run to make every mode of transportation and still nearly missing them, and harassing Skye about her love of Hogwarts.

Cambridge was just idyllic (day drinking) bliss. We walked by historic schools/churches/buildings and went into historic bars. There was one in particular that someone told us WWII pilots painted the ceiling-- because this made no sense we investigated and turns out they painted their names on the ceiling. This made more sense but then again, not really. Would have been an odd job for a war veteran to take up, painting bar ceilings. After this we picked up the makings for BYO mimosas and ran to catch our boat. A lot like gondolas in Venice, in that you're about a foot above the water, but not like them at all when you're facing a mom who dresses like her teen daughter, said teen daughter, and mom's obviously new husband instead of the view of the river. Turns out we were the only ones to take the BYO instructions seriously. Needlesstosay, the punter (look it up) gave everyone but us a comment card. I was so in love with Cambridge by then and so mimosa'd out that as Vivian Ward would say that was a "big mistake.. huge".

Another big mistake, showing Lauren and Skye the hand signals a foreign exchange student from China showed me once on the bus ride home. Offended countless passengers. Still, despite the rough start to the weekend with the better-to-be-forgotten client meeting, and ending with potentially racist sign language, it was the best visit to London to date. Hands down.

Part deux of the International Concert Club happened two weekends ago. Lauren came down and we saw Band of Horses. It was so great to see them; like seeing old friends. Despite not knowing any of their new songs because the last time I really listened to them was 2011 (?), it was still so wonderfully reassuring and familiar. I had a moment of pure happiness during The Great Salt Lakes. Sometimes these moments of realization and appreciation smack into me: I am living in another country, seeing a band I love(d), with a dear friend. Nothing better. You'd think I was their biggest fan considering the smile I had on my face and that I've now seen them play in three different cities. .. well, maybe I am.

The same weekend, thanks to Lauren's culinary prowess and Chrissy Tiegan's amazing recipes, I/we hosted a dinner party. Was really fun to be able to reciprocate to sweet Lize who's always cooking for others and to have some semblance of a social life for 48 hours.

Since then, spring has sprung in Paris. On the first warm-ish night, I did an impromptu walking tour of the St. Germain des Pres area, and the Latin Quarter. Here, cafes were overflowing with people enjoying the weather, spilling over into the streets where other people were strolling or swaying along to the live music around every corner; this was the ol' Paree I have been waiting for. Just like the Elephant's Head in Camden, I was thrown back in time and it was... euphoric. It was also a magical experience to visit the Pantheon (though not as cool as Rome's IMO), the Sorbonne, the fountain of Saint-Michel, some other old buildings, something relating to Montaigne, and always, the Seine by night. I cannot wait for summer.
