5944 Manola Way, Hollywood Hills
How'd I wind up on the Amalfi Coast?
Tumblr media
This home as a very unusual entrance for most places, but one common to the Hollywood Hills - garage, with staircase up a few flights at street level.
Yes, you have to go outside to get to your car.
Yes, this home was built in 1924 without cars in mind.
Yes, you'll get soaked when it's raining.
Yes Costco trips and nights in heels are a bitch.
But you get views!
Tumblr media
I've never seen a more creative solution to a cracked retaining wall. A perfect metaphor for California.
Tumblr media
Already hoofing it up two flights and you get this large outdoor balcony space open to the canyon.
Tumblr media
Gorgeous gorgeous view. The orange and cream tile is a dream.
Tumblr media
Beautiful Batchelder-style tile fireplace warms up this living space.
Tumblr media
Just off the small but mighty kitchen is this full bath. Huge shower. That's a lot of tiles that half to work together.
Tumblr media
Another very Instagrammy view, this time from the bathroom to the buffet. They are unafraid of color in this house.
Tumblr media
Is it an office? A bedroom for an exhibitionist? You decide!
Tumblr media
The off center chandelier gives me the ick but the textured walls in this dining space add a nice feel.
Tumblr media
Interesting how they added shelves to the insets, I like this idea.
Tumblr media
And yes! A second fireplace. I don't think this one's functional, but it is beautiful.
Tumblr media
That orange and cream tile just makes me so happy. Original windows that open like this are very special.
Tumblr media
Wooden textured doors hide the laundry. $2m house and you don't have a laundry room. But the laundry is upstairs at least.
Tumblr media
Lots of little terraced seating areas in the backyard. At least this house isn't aggressively pressed against the hillside.
Tumblr media
Clever! use of a headboard-less bed to obscure how small this room actually is. But the window area is a beautiful reading space.
Tumblr media
New tile trend - rough natural stone and gloss black. I like it!
Tumblr media
Another newish trend are fish scale tiles. Adds some visual interest to an otherwise small shower.
Tumblr media
Master bedroom has its own inset sitting area with windows.
Tumblr media
Surprisingly large bathroom with more textured tile. LED lighting against the ceiling beams is a little jarring in here. Lots of natural light already.
Tumblr media
Ooo...these closet cabinets look rushed.
Tumblr media
And the dungeon under the stairs.
But - not much storage in the house so this is an effective space.

Tarek El Moussa Reveals How To Renovate During a Pandemic
HGTV
Tarek El Moussa of “Flip or Flop” fame has helped many novice flippers on his show “Flipping 101 with Tarek El Moussa.” And after all those years in the business, you’d think he’s seen it all.
But then the coronavirus pandemic hit.
On the episode titled “Bad Energy BoHo,” El Moussa helps Amber and Carlos with a house in Playa del Rey, a neighborhood in Los Angeles. The renovation is going well, but they’re thrown a curveball as they hear news of COVID-19 cases popping up in Southern California.
El Moussa says they need to finish this project ASAP, before the pandemic gets bigger. Read on to find out how they manage to finish remodeling this house under immense pressure, and learn some tips about how to save time and money when renovating your kitchen, bathroom, and beyond.
Custom cabinets aren’t always necessary
This galley kitchen definitely needed a new look.
HGTV
Right away, Amber explains that she wants to give the house a minimalist, Scandinavian style. When touring the kitchen, she asks El Moussa if he thinks custom cabinets could help accomplish this look.
“If you spend that money for custom cabinets, you’ll never get it back,” El Moussa says.
He says that skipping the custom cabinets, and going with stock cabinetry, is an easy way to save money and time—which is important since the clock is ticking.
Wood cabinets make this Scandinavian-style kitchen look lovely.
HGTV
El Moussa then suggests installing matte white cabinets, but Amber doesn’t take his advice. Instead, she chooses a light wood grain. “It’s going to go better with my Scandinavian boho style,” she explains.
In the end, the stock wood grain cabinets are the right choice. Not only do they save money, but they also bring an earthy element to the kitchen.
Paint the fireplace for an easy makeover
This fireplace is large and dated.
HGTV
This house has a beautiful brick fireplace, but El Moussa knows they’ll need to update it before putting the house on the market. Amber wants the fireplace to be white, but she isn’t sure if she should whitewash it or use simple white paint.
White paint was certainly the right choice.
HGTV
El Moussa’s advice: Stick to the home’s theme.
“This house is going to be pretty much a brand-new house kind of when it’s all done, right?” he says. “If you whitewash the bricks, it’s going to have that older feel, an older look to it, versus, like, a high, bright white modern gloss paint.”
Since the rest of the place will look new and modern, the fireplace should match.
Accent tile can add visual interest on a budget
This all-white bathroom was bland.
HGTV
Renovating a bathroom can be an expensive and tedious task, so Amber gets creative in order to save time and cash.
In one of the bathrooms, rather than replacing all of the white tile, she keeps it but adds bands of accent tile.  This creative tile repurposing ends up saving $2,500 and, perhaps more importantly, it impresses El Moussa.
“This is exactly how you need to think when you’re flipping houses,” he says.
With these bands of accent tile, the bathroom has a new look.
HGTV
The bathroom ends up with a fun, boho style, and Amber and Carlos get to pocket their savings. All around, this tile solution is a big success.
An office space is a must during a pandemic
Sometimes staging is everything.
HGTV
When Amber and Carlos started this project, working from home wasn’t quite so ubiquitous, but with COVID-19 hitting midrenovation, a home office space has suddenly become a hot commodity. So, it’s lucky that Carlos and Amber stage the living room with a small desk.
A black fence creates a modern look
This pool is great, but the fence needs an update.
HGTV
One of the best features of this house is the pool. Surrounded by a fence and beautiful trees, this pool is a sweet oasis in the backyard. Still, it needs some updates if it’s going to impress buyers—and one of those updates has to be painting the fence.
While Amber likes the original green color of the fencing, she and Carlos end up painting it black for a modern look.
Now, the pool has a stylish, modern lool.
HGTV
The new coat of paint makes the pool area look modern, and buyers love it.
“It’s perfect,” one buyer says when she sees the pool area.
Is this ‘Flipping 101’ tutorial a success?
Amber and Carlos know from the beginning that they have a high-risk flip on their hands. They’d bought the house for $1,030,000, and put $127,000 into the renovation. After paying $38,000 in interest and $70,000 in closing costs and commission, these flippers have to sell the house for $1,265,000 to break even.
When it comes time to choose a list price, El Moussa explains that these flippers are in luck: The pandemic has surprisingly boosted housing prices. He explains that they can list the house at $1.5 million, which means they have the potential to make a big profit.
Amber and Carlos end up accepting an offer for $1,535,000, which means they made a $270,000 profit. That’s an incredible return for this risky flip—during a pandemic no less.

HAPPY 23RD BIRTHDAY "BURN MY EYES”!
You read that right, 23 years ago today Machine Head's debut album was released on an unsuspecting world and launched their career in an unprecedented matter.  While success would be slow in America, both overseas in Europe and Australia MH became an almost instant powerhouse in metal. Combining elements of thrash metal, hard-core, and hip hop along with a notable Industrial influence, the songs on “Burn My Eyes” resonated loudly with metal fans. Most controversially was the rap influence lyrically and visually in the “Davidian" video with Robb wearing his long hair in corn-rows and the boys walking around the city of Oakland with pit bulls, re-creating their favorite rap videos. Many metal fans did not approve, but most agreed it was a breath of fresh air. And while the boys definitely played up their street/tough guy image (occasionally to comical levels), the gritty lyrics featured on “Burn My Eyes” were reflection of a genuine tension the band was living through at the time, including gang fights, and several members dealing drugs to earn a living. Fun facts about Burn My Eyes: - The first song written for the album was “Death Church" inspired heavily by the album “Street Cleaner" by Godflesh - Started in Oct 1991, Machine Head it was originally a side project while Robb was still in Vio-Lence.  But by Feb 1992 became his full-time project. - At one point Robb was asked to be a fill-in guitarist for industrial pioneers Ministry.  Asked to provide some material, Robb asked future-drummer Chris Kontos to showcase 3 tunes he had written, “Blood For Blood", “Block” (then-called "Fuck It All”), and "Death Church” on a boombox.  However, with Chris's hands full in both Sap, and Attitude Adjustment at the time, Robb asked Las Vegas resident Tony Costanza to join on drums. - The first 3 shows played by Machine Head were a house party in Oakland, Las Vegas, and the ’92 Los Angeles Metalfest at Gazarri’s all featuring Tony on drums. They would mark bassist and guitarist Adam and Logan’s debut live performances. - Chris Kontos joined in Oct. 1992 and his debut show with Machine Head was at Mayday Malone’s in Pleasant Hill, CA supporting Defiance. - The demo that would get Machine Head signed was recorded by John “Indo” at a friends home studio with amps in the bathroom, and all distorted vocals being recorded over the house intercom. - Then-Metal Maniacs journalist, (and current blabbermouth impresario) Borivoj Krgin, was pivotal in the band getting signed to Roadrunner records, convincing a not-so-sure Monte Conner that he should sign them. - BME was recorded at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley in Nov 1993 at the same time as Rancid's - "Let’s Go”, Green Day’s -  “Dookie" and Tesla’s - “Bust A Nut". The boys often hung out with Rancid and would periodically break into Tesla's recording studio and steal from the massive stash of candy Tesla had. - It was mixed by Colin Richardson once at Fantasy, and then re-mixed at scream Studios in Burbank California. In fact Machine Head, Rancid, and Green Day would all remix their albums at different locations. - The first tour the album was opening for label-mates Obituary who co-headlined with Napalm Death. MH and Napalm Death shared a bus together. - Burn My Eyes was original called “Davidian” and artwork was created featuring their logo on a TV screen.  Thankfully saner minds prevailed. - The “Davidian" video was recorded throughout parts of Oakland, and San Francisco, culminating with a show at the Rock On Broadway featuring a then-unknown Deftones as main support. - The live photos of Deftones singer Chino Moreno for their debut album “Adrenaline, "are from the Davidian video shoot show. - BME charted at number #25 in the UK after the “Davidian" video received a substantial reaction on Headbanger Ball. - With Headbangers Ball cancelled in America, and no outlets to play the video, BME sold 1,100 copies its first week in the US. - Machine Head supported Slayer in both Europe and the US, returning to headline the same European venues just 6 month later. - Machine head and Stuck Mojo would headline in America in October-Dec 1995. The tour was dubbed "the disastour”, and while it had several highlights including Chicago at The Thirsty Whale and New Mexico, most of the tour would only have 100 people at most venues.  In the south, they played to 35 people regularly. - A year and a half after release BME had sold a staggering 400,000 records worldwide, and a respectable 80,000 albums in the US. It would be the biggest debut album on Roadrunner. Do you have any recollections of this album? Did you catch MH on tour then? How does "Burn My Eyes" stand the test of time for you? Want a Break in the 3-Hour ‘Avengers’ Movie? You’ll Need a Passport or a Time Machine
Tumblr media
At a multiplex in Jerusalem, midway through the three-hour epic “Avengers: Endgame,” the hammer-wielding superhero Thor was gracing the screen when the picture suddenly stopped.
Thor’s golden locks cut out, the Hebrew word for “pause” appeared and audience members began to rise from their seats. About 10 minutes later, the superheros resumed their battle against the villain Thanos.
The finale of the Avengers saga, which began showing across the United States on Thursday, is expected to make box-office history, with experts predicting that the film will gross more than $300 million in its opening weekend. Another big number associated with the film is its run time: Clocking in at 181 minutes, “Endgame” is the longest Marvel Studios movie to date.
It has been decades since American movie theaters regularly had intermissions. But when word of the film’s length got out earlier this year, it prompted online pleas from some fans for a break in the action. The filmmakers shot the idea down, and American theater chains have publicly responded to tweets from moviegoers to make clear that, no, there will be no built-in moment to buy or dispose of their Coca-Colas.
“We’re telling everyone to prep as if they’re going into surgery,” joked Joe Russo, one of the directors, in an interview with ComicBook.com. “Don’t have any water or anything to drink post-midnight the day before you see the film, and you’ll be fine.”
So in the United States, most audiences will have to steel themselves for three uninterrupted hours. But theaters across the world have taken control of the remote and hit pause roughly halfway through. Avengers fans in countries including Egypt, Italy, Portugal, Switzerland and Turkey — where a mid-movie break is customary, even in shorter films — all reported having an intermission during showings this week.
Intermissions were once a regular part of the American moviegoing experience, even with films that were not “Gone With The Wind”-sized (three hours, 58 minutes) epics. The reason was partly practical: Theaters needed time to swap out film reels.
Jonathan Kuntz, a film historian who teaches at the University of California, Los Angeles, remembered seeing “Lawrence of Arabia” in 1962 and going to his car during intermission, thinking the movie was over (it ran to a whopping three hours, 48 minutes).
In recent decades, intermissions in the United States have been rare. “Gandhi” in 1982 (three hours, 11 minutes) had a break in one version of the film, as did “The Hateful Eight,” the 2015 Western by Quentin Tarantino, which was about as long as “Endgame.” But filmmakers today are not accustomed to building pauses into the screenplay, and the tradition has largely disappeared.
One independent movie theater outside Baltimore, a drive-in called Bengies, has taken matters into its own hands by adding an intermission to their Sunday screening of “Endgame” to accommodate the “unusually long run time of this movie,” according to its website. The theater did not respond to requests for comment.
But in the rest of the country, facing the possibility of needing to leave the theater and missing key plot points, moviegoers prepared themselves for a battle of their own.
Lined up to enter Williamsburg Cinemas in Brooklyn for a Thursday evening showing, some fans said they had deprived themselves of liquids for most of the day to avoid even a brief departure from the theater.
Standing toward the back of the line in the cold April drizzle, Kevin Myvett, 28, said he had spent much of the last week preparing for “Endgame” by exercising self-control and watching older Marvel films back-to-back without letting himself take a break.
“I was really trying to prepare myself mentally for this,” he said.
Fans and websites circulated tips on which moments were opportune for quick getaways. At an AMC theater in Inver Grove Heights, Minn., a suburb of St. Paul, Dylan Novacek, 23, darted from his seat during a scene that fans online said was not particularly consequential. He was back in about a minute. “I didn’t even know how he made it to the bathroom so fast,” his girlfriend, Kayla Erickson, said.
The American movie industry is unlikely to embrace intermissions again, despite all the snacks viewers might buy during a pause. And adding in an intermission for a movie like “Endgame” would only further complicate the scheduling headache that comes with showing a wildly popular three-hour (not including trailers) film.
A longer movie, paired with extra time after the show needed to clean the theater, would typically mean fewer showtimes, and thus fewer ticket sales, said Jeff Bock, a senior analyst at Exhibitor Relations, an entertainment research firm. Instead, some theaters are simply opening earlier and closing later — or not at all — to screen “Endgame” as many times as possible.
In the United States, 29 AMC theaters were showing “Endgame” around the clock from Thursday to Friday. An additional 17 were open for 72 hours straight.
“The fan base is so rabid that they can eke out a lot of money with these multiple showings,” Mr. Bock said.
Marvel movies, in particular, have trained fans to stay in their seats for as long as possible. Most Marvel films include scenes after the credits that give clues about future films, and the credits themselves can be quite long (about 10 minutes for “Endgame”) because of all the visual effects involved. Given that “Endgame” is meant to conclude the Avengers saga, the existence or lack of a post-credits scene has been the subject of much online discussion.
Still, many Marvel fans are remaining in their seats to the very end, and most of those interviewed after they saw the movie on Thursday said they did not mind that they didn’t have a chance to get up sooner.
At an AMC in Phoenix, Matt Hoskins, 40, said the Marvel fandom was so strong that the length simply did not matter to most of them. Plus, adding an intermission — with its air of 20th-century nostalgia — wouldn’t fit well in a mainstream 21st-century film about superheroes, he said.
“This is a comic-book movie,” he said. “This is not Evita.”

The LADG designs studio and residence for a painter and a photographer
The Los Angeles Design Group added three structures to a mid-century home in Los Angeles' Highland Park to create a guest house, studio and exhibition spaces for two visual artists.
The US studio designed the expansion of the artists' existing residence to create a flexible live-work complex called House in Los Angeles 1.
Above: The LADG extended the plot of a mid-century house. Top image: the complex is home to two artists. Photos by Saam Gabbay
In addition to the original home, it now has a guest house that also acts as studio space, and structures for exhibitions and events open to a courtyard.
"Our project defies and reorganises some of the architectural tropes associated with LA suburbia," said The LADG co-founder Claus Benjamin Freyinger.
Materials were chosen to complement the existing property. Photo by Saam Gabbay.
"It's not a single house with a unified programme, meant to contain a sleeping family at night, who commute off to work and school lives in the morning," he added.
"It's a collection of buildings that integrates work, living, and communal activities around the livelihoods of two artists."
The covered garage can also be used as an events space
The LADG designed the extension to create a seamless space between indoors and outdoors. To achieve this it designed each building so that the layout of the walls does not meet the roofline above. Instead, walls extend beyond to mark areas outside and roofs project to cover nooks.
According to the studio, this principle draws on the work of Los Angeles architect Cliff May, who created a series of post-war "dream homes" in the city.
This wall hosts a sink on the inside and forms a shelf on the exterior
"May's residential designs are remarkable because of the way walls and interior elements appear to float free on the ground plane, without simply reiterating the boundary of the roof above," explained co-founder Andrew Holder.
A more obvious application of this is the roof that covers the garage, designed to also be used as an events space.
Extended roofs cover nooks
Some of the extended walls meanwhile are thick enough to also host functions – such as storage, bathroom utilities, and an outdoor shower.
This idea of double-functionality continues throughout the project, whereby spaces inside create opportunities on the exterior. For example, an indent created for the washbasin in the studio serves as an ad-hoc shelf accessible from the garden.
Board-marked concrete walls are left exposed in the garage
Drawing on the aesthetic of the existing building, the additional structures are built with simple materials. Cast-in-place concrete marked with the imprint its timber setting boards forms the base of white walls covered in smooth troweled stucco.
The exposed wooden structure of the roof above pops against the white walls. Pale grey metal panels cover the top of the roofs.
Why drywall forms a blank backdrop in the studio
Similarly, simple materials are used inside, like white drywall in the studio that provides a backdrop to hang art.
"The finish of the studio tries to make surfaces available for the client to use and modify," said Holder.
Other live-works spaces designed for artists include a fashion designer's property in Santa Monica, which was recently extended to include a small studio, and a home and workshop in New York that was originally a garage.
Plywood is used to cover the walls in the artist's darkroom
Freyinger and Holder founded The Los Angeles Design Group in 2004, and the studio has offices in Venice, California and Cambridge, Massachusetts.
It has previously designed a bar in Culver City, California influenced by the pubs of Dublin and Belfast and a conceptual concrete pavilion for the Coachella music festival.

The Colors of Japanese Internment
I owe my existence, in part, to Japanese internment. After the attack on Pearl Harbor, in 1941, as anti-Japanese fervor gripped the U.S., my grandmother, Eiko Muto, became one of the roughly hundred and twenty thousand Americans of Japanese ancestry on the West Coast whom the U.S. government forced into relocation camps. Eiko, who was in her senior year of high school at the time, in Santa Clara, California, was sent with her younger brother and their parents to the Tule Lake Relocation Center, in northern California, one of the ten internment camps that held Japanese-Americans during the war. It was at Tule Lake that she met and married my grandfather. They left the camp in March, 1946; my father was born seven months later.
My grandfather died before I was born, but my grandmother, now ninety-three and living in Los Angeles, still shares memories of her years at Tule Lake. Her stories, which she has told more willingly with the passage of time, paint a vivid portrait of camp life, and of the lasting effects of the sweeping governmental discrimination that uprooted our family. To me, her stories, like the iconic black-and-white photos of life in the camps by photographers like Dorothea Lange and Ansel Adams, have always felt somewhat unreal—like the distant history of an America far removed from my own. How did this happen? I’ve often thought after hearing my grandmother describe her years in the camp. And how did it happen to my family?
Similar questions might have echoed in the mind of the internee Bill Manbo, a car mechanic from Riverside, California, when he picked up a camera to document his surroundings after months of captivity at the Heart Mountain camp, in Wyoming. Though internees were initially prohibited from bringing cameras into the camps, that rule was loosened at Heart Mountain in 1943. The photographs of another internee, Toyo Miyatake, who was sent to Manzanar, in California, and assembled a makeshift camera from a lens that he had smuggled inside, have become essential records of the incarceration. But of all the most famous images of Japanese internment by either internees or government-hired photographers, only Manbo’s were in color.
Between 1943 and 1944, with a 35-mm. Zeiss Contax camera and Kodachrome film, Manbo, an amateur photographer, captured family portraits and scenes of everyday life at Heart Mountain, often set against the camp’s desolate but stunning natural surroundings. Many of the scenes resemble those captured by other photographers of internment, but the work’s rich colors lend it a rare immediacy. In one of the photos, Manbo’s wife, Mary, and young son, Billy, wearing a beige soldier’s hat, are perched on a rock formation, looking away from the camera toward the expansive camp below and the Big Horn Mountains in the distance. In other shots, Billy holds a red toy airplane and learns how to ice-skate; a diver splashes into a swimming hole; and inmates line up for a screening of the film “How Green Was My Valley” at a barrack that was converted into a movie theatre. In capturing jovial scenes of sumo matches and Bon Odori, a type of traditional folk dance, Manbo also depicted internees’ attempts at preserving parts of Japanese culture. Some of the shots, including several of the Bon Odori showing young girls in vibrant kimonos dancing alongside others clad in Western dresses, evoke the bicultural identity common among the country’s incarcerated Japanese-Americans, two-thirds of whom were U.S. citizens.
Unlike Dorothea Lange, who documented the camps with a restrained but critical eye, Manbo, who died in 1992, largely avoided scenes that laid bare the indignities of internment: the crowded, dirty living spaces; the meagre meals; the endless monotony and waiting around—to be fed, to wash clothes, to use the bathroom, sometimes in communal restrooms that lacked partitions between toilets. The historian Eric L. Muller writes in his book “Colors of Confinement,” from 2012, in which Manbo’s images were published for the first time, that the photographer’s goal was “to document some semblance of an ordinary life in extraordinary circumstances, and to create for his young son a visual legacy of a normal childhood.” Yet a quiet current of protest crept into Manbo’s work. In one image, Billy, facing the camera, climbs onto the barbed-wire fence that surrounds the camp; behind him, a seemingly endless row of barracks recedes into the background. Billy, like my grandmother, wasn’t just an internee. He was a prisoner in his own country. For me, the rich colors of Manbo’s photos serve as a reminder that the injustices my family faced, which I had once envisioned only in grayscale, took place in the same vivid hues as the present, and that those injustices could easily repeat themselves today.
