UM Interview: Jimah, El Cézar & Quantum Flush

Many artists today are constantly evolving in their artistry, whether that be personally or musically, through their image and sound. This Atlanta trio is no different. The trio made up of Jimah, El Cézar, Quantum Flush are bringing a new sound into the music industry, creating music under a genre of music, called "Afroton". A blend of Afrobeats and Reggaeton, which the trio introduced to the world with the release of their debut EP, 'Rice & Stew'.
Amandah Opoku sat down with Jimah, El Cézar, Quantum Flush to talk about their new record ‘Rice & Stew’, embarking on a solo career and more!
Amandah Opoku: Jimah, El Cézar & Quantum Flush, thank you for doing this interview today! Before we kick off please tell our readers about yourself and one random fact people do not know about you? JIMAH: Hey, my name is Jimah, I’m a Cameroonian artist based in Atlanta and it’s my pleasure to do this interview. As far as one random fact goes, I used to go to boarding school in Cameroon when I was younger which was a crazy experience. EL CÉZAR: What’s up! To start off, I was born in Maracaibo, Venezuela. I love to make music, i love to game and i love to eat good food. Me and the guys are gonna have our own food show when God permits. One fact about me that is not so known, is my day hustle when i’m not wearing the cape; i bartend for a living. I go to weddings and serve up to 200 people and no cap i make a good ass margarita. FLUSH: I am a composer and producer of world music based in Atlanta. I’ve been creating my entire life and I’m a believer in God.

Amandah Opoku: What inspired you each to create music and pursue it as a career? JIMAH: When I was like 13 in boarding school, I used to write out song lyrics for my friends in class who wanted to know the words to songs. From doing that over and over I figured I should start writing my own lyrics, and that led to me getting into instrumentals and trying to make my own songs. I used to also battle rap some of the kids in older grades and it used to be a little thing we’d do to pass the time between studies. The way the people reacted to me and what I did was a rush. The more I did it I realized I didn’t want to do anything else in life but chase that feeling that making music gives me. EL CÉZAR: What inspired me. My dad is a percussionist and had drums in the house at all times. I remember being 5 years old when i got my first drum set and driving my mom nuts playing the hell out of it. My grandfather was also a singer in a gaita group along with his brother, who played the cuarto, (basically a smaller guitar.) I remember growing up in Venezuela. Every time we had a family gathering, beer and live music was always involved. My grandfather singing his chords out with by grandma, my dad banging his drums, my uncles joining in with claps. It was overall great times. As i grew in the States, I began to fall in love with hip-hop and the culture. Around my junior year of high school, I quit drumline and started messing around with FL studio. The rest is just history, well growth and history. Music is all I know and love. FLUSH: I began this journey in sound my first trip to Africa and got inspired by what was around me. Good things always came out of the arts for me. It always felt good for me to share my sound with people. With music, more opportunities opened up for me and I felt it was the most natural path for me in life.
Amandah Opoku: What artists would you say inspire you both musically and personally? JIMAH: I listen to a wide variety of music, so I’d say Sade, Fela Kuti, Future, Wizkid, Bob Marley, and Kanye West to name a few. There are so many others in Africa like the late DJ Arafat, and the late Manu Dibango, Flavour, and so many others. EL CÉZAR: Definitely, Wiz Khalifa because of his lifestyle. It’s a carefree, luxurious lifestyle. He preaches good energy, hard work, and that you can become a self-made boss on your own. His old music was all I listened to. My second inspiration is Bad Bunny. He writes all his songs, his style is unmatched, and he’s always creating the wave. A big thing for me and the guys is creating the wave and not riding it. FLUSH: I’m really inspired by Bach, Beethoven And Debussy because of the passion and their ability to push music into a new era. They inspire me to play with chords and form when laying out my ideas. Dub Reggae inspires me too. I really love King Tubby and Lee Scratch Perry.
Amandah Opoku: Who are artists that you look up to that you would like to work with or collab with in the future? JIMAH: I feel like Skepta and I would make a smash for sure. Wiz and Burna would be crazy. Rema has been going crazy too. I feel like we’d make something that would really shatter the boundaries of the sound. EL CÉZAR: Right now, I'm really praying and manifesting a feature from Fuego. He’s an innovator, a genre bender just like us. Another artist I really look forward to collaborating with is Rema. The guy is just a vibe wizard. Lastly, Nessly. Nessly is fye. FLUSH: There are so many to name. But, I definitely want to make records with Oumou Sangare, Fatoumata Diawara, Gunna, Young Thug, Alfa Mist, and Yussef Dayes just to name few.
Amandah Opoku: If you could describe your music in three words. What words would you choose and why? JIMAH: I’d say my music is a “Futuristic Eclectic Medley” because we are really taking elements from cultures from all across the globe and implementing them into the music. From instruments to lingo, I just want everyone in the world to be able to relate to the music. EL CÉZAR: Three words: smooth, sensual, and at times enigmatic. I feel like I’m a pretty chill guy so this type of music is what resonates with me. Plus, I’m also a night owl. Listen to my music at night and you’ll feel what i’m talking about. With the guys though, I’m heavily influenced by the energy Flush is trying to emit with the beats. Flush is an unpredictable man, so i have to adapt a lot. I love it though. FLUSH: The words that best describe my sound would be diversity, eclecticism and originality. I’m creating music that transcends cultures and language. I pull inspiration from all aspects of my life and create with the intent to weld different cultures together. I’m born and raised ATL with parents from West Africa. So when I think about creating, certain sounds make sense with others.
Amandah Opoku: You recently released your project, ‘Rice & Stew’. What was the writing and recording process like? JIMAH: Yeah Rice & Stew was a lot of fun to make. Working with El Cezar and Flush was just a flawless process. Flush and Cezar are always coming with some crazy production and once they press play on the beat, it doesn’t take long for the ideas to start flowing. I typically do a mix of freestyling and writing, and we record ourselves. I went to school for engineering and Cezar is a beast with engineering too; so all the recording, mixing, and mastering was done in house, handled mostly by Cezar. EL CÉZAR: Rice & Stew man, the process was great! I’ll never forget those times. I think Jimah and I have a similar process. During Rice & Stew, it was always hard to figure out who would go first on the song unless Flush explicitly said who he felt like should start. We played rock paper scissors sometimes for who would go first, LOL. Once we figured that out, we just vibed on the beat. We spit melodies, and sometimes words will come out so we get an idea of what the song will be about. After that, we either knock out the song in one go and write it then and there, or we’ll vibe on like 3 or 4 more beats and pick the best one to finish. FLUSH: The writing process is actually something similar to a therapy session. Jimah and El Cézar are my friends so we talk about what’s happening in our personal lives. They pretty much narrate my feelings into song form. We have inside jokes the somehow worked it’s way into the music. Everything we do is from the heart I swear.
Amandah Opoku: You are 3 individuals contributing your own visions, sounds and ideas to what ultimately became, ‘Rice & Stew’. How did you integrate your own personal ideas/views into the project? JIMAH: The one thing we realized when we all came together was that we all had very similar life stories but just on different sides of the world. We also realized that our music and cultures were very similar and were almost like cousins. On every record we tend to tell the same story just from our points of view, whether that be in our native language or with lingo that only people from our cultures would understand, we’re like 3 sides to the same coin. EL CÉZAR: Being yourself is really easy when it comes to making music. You do what feels natural. I feel like because we’re from different parts of the world, we’re even more encouraged to hone into our cultures. In 17hrs, I talk about taking my girl to Maracaibo, comiendo cepillao’ por el lago. Maracaibo is known for many things, but a great attraction is the Lake walk, “La vereda del lago,” and we also eat special iceys with condensed milk called “cepillado.” Also, in Maracaibo we have a different dialect then pretty much the rest of Venezuela. We use the “vos” instead of “tu,” which completely changes the language. It feels forced when i try to speak with the “tu”, the “vos” just feels too natural to me. I definitely like to incorporate that in the songs, mainly because it’s what I write naturally, but I sometimes want to make it digestible for those who aren’t too familiar with the “vos” dialect. FLUSH: We respect each other’s vision and also learn along the way. El Cézar definitely taught me a lot about Maracaibo to the point where I feel like I was there. This is what Rice and Stew is about. Creating a hot meal by bringing our own seasoning and mixing it together.
Amandah Opoku: What inspired you to come together and release this project together? JIMAH: We felt like there was an absence of Afro-Reggaeton collaborations, so we decided to really spearhead that movement by labelling the new genre AFROTON. Once we figured out the formula for blending the cultures sonically, we knew that we had to give the people a collection of music from that genre. EL CÉZAR: Me and Jimah met during one of our studio internships and clicked the first day we met. We spoke about Afrobeats and how it’s similar to Reggaeton. We spoke about the similarities the genres shared, the emotion the genres give us and how we resonate with the sound. We cooked up beats at the internship that same day and pretty much planned our first session together. At the time, I wasn’t really behind the mic much. I was just making beats. Our first session, I played Jimah a beat and we recorded “Wahala,” our first track together. I loved the vibe and i felt inspired to write something in Spanish. This was my first Spanish verse ever. When we finished the track we literally went nuts and knew we found something special. We even shot a video to that song, but never dropped it. After weeks of cooking up with Jimah, he finally introduced me to Flush. That day, me and Flush cooked up a beat for a song called “Shayo.” Great song man, humble beginnings. After that, we knew we had to keep cooking up. This was something truly special. After months of cooking and just vibing, getting closer and growing together, we decided that maybe it was time for a project that would showcase this new sound that we’re bringing to the world. We knew that this would bring people together and that’s all we ever wanted. I see these guys as my brothers and this music really fortified that. Now, the ultimate goal is to have the most diverse dance floor anybody has ever danced on. FLUSH: We felt that the world was changing especially now that we have reached a new decade. The sound has to transform and reflect the new age we live in today. We are all experiencing something completely new some of these things being life threatening. It’s only right that the sound changes with the times.

Pictured: EL CÉZAR
Amandah Opoku: What inspired you to name the record ‘Rice & Stew’? JIMAH: Honestly it was a joke at first, but it eventually stuck. Rice & Stew is a staple household meal that most cultures eat in some form or fashion and we felt like people would be interested to hear what rice and stew would sound like sonically. EL CÉZAR: EVERYONE EATS RICE & STEW. Flush named the “La Zorra” beat “Rice Stew” and that’s what truly inspired it. That’s where the name came from. FLUSH: The name came from a crazy beat I made. After making the 4th record on the project, we noticed that rice and stew is a meal people all over the world can resonate with.
Amandah Opoku: If you had to choose one song from ‘Rice & Stew’ to introduce someone to your music, which song would you choose and why? JIMAH: I would probably show them La Zorra. That’s because that record really cuts across all cultural boundaries and has a lot of energy that is just undeniable. EL CÉZAR: I would choose Outta Line as the song to show the first timers. It’s the perfect blend of everything - vibes, emotion, story, theme, the BEAT. This song is my fav from the project. Me and Jimah go back and forth, passing the baton, and telling the story. This man Flush went crazy on the beat as usual. It’s just an overall digestible vibe. Anybody can vibe to that song. FLUSH: I would choose La Zorra. That song is the one that makes me speed down the highway when it comes on. I love the high energy in the drums mixed with the psycho synths and syncopation.
Amandah Opoku: In the future, do you think you’ll create a group name that your projects would be released under or do you think you’ll continue to release music credited as your individual selves? JIMAH: You know this is something we talk about very often and we just didn’t want to force a name that did not resonate with everyone. So, until we get the perfect name, we’ll keep crediting each other. EL CÉZAR: We’ve actually thought about the group name A LOT. If we get a name, we want it to be something that represents all of us. We’re really not tryna force it so as of right now, I think we’re going as individuals. To us, we’re still a group. We’re still the Afroton trio. FLUSH: I feel that we could have a name in the future, but as of now God hasn’t revealed that message to us yet. We are just trying to grown in our sound and through that it’ll manifest itself.
Amandah Opoku: What do you want people to take away from your music? And as an artist, what do you hope to achieve with your music career? JIMAH: The underlying message throughout my music is unity and cultural appreciation. We all have different things to learn from each other and appreciate so I really want to preach that. I want to be recognized as one of the greatest artists of all time for bringing cultures together and I want to really represent for my country Cameroon, and I want to change the lives of people back home with my music. EL CÉZAR: I want people to understand that we’re all brothers and sisters at the end of the day. We want people to treat each other like family and really to share the dance floor together, metaphorically and literally. As an artist, I want to be up there with the greats, just like any other artist. But not because we’re good at what we do, but because we are innovative and we brought something to the table that no one has ever thought to bring - something genuine built from love and passion. FLUSH: I want to inspire people to express themselves. People should be free in thinking and shouldn’t be afraid to take their time in finding themselves. I find out more and more about myself through the sound and share it with my listeners.
Amandah Opoku: What has been your favorite track released this year and why? JIMAH: I released a song at the beginning of this year called “Fake Energy” and that song really set the tone for me this year in terms of my mental state and how I approach people and this music. Whenever I listen to it, it really inspires me to stay on my game. EL CÉZAR: La Zorra had to be my second best because there’s an unmatched emotion that i get when i listen to that. The song is just crazy. From another artist though, it has to be Ginger by Wizkid. The production is impeccable and the mixing is on point. Burna boy did his thing, Wiz did his thing too. The outro of the song where the key signature changes was just perfect. FLUSH: My favorite track released is Right Mind because that is when we all came together for the first time. We created the song at a studio called Danny Vails and since then we’ve been rockin heavy. That was the first time I linked El Cézar.
Amandah Opoku: 2020 has been a very interesting year for all of us. How has the pandemic affected you as a musician? JIMAH: It’s just given me more time to create, and if not for the pandemic, I don’t think we would have been able to really lock in to make Rice & Stew. It was a blessing in disguise. EL CÉZAR: It was truly a blessing to just be able to sit at home and perfect my craft. Every day was productive for me. I was either studying music business, learning new methods to master songs, or making new beats and songs. It was great. It gave me time to really hone into this music. Being able to dedicate my energy into just music felt amazing to me. Rice & Stew would’ve probably came out in 2021, if not for the pandemic. We literally cooked up weekly and pushed out about 30 songs in the span of 3 months. FLUSH: It sucks because we have been performing in clubs and can’t enjoy it like that cause of the masks. We are also on a virtual tour which is cool, but it would have been better if we could get on the road and physically interact with our fans. I pray everything clears up so we can really go crazy.

Pictured: QUANTUM FLUSH
Amandah Opoku: With ‘Rice & Stew’ out now, what can fans and music listeners expect from you next year? JIMAH: Expect more futuristic culture blending, culture bending vibes from all 3 of us. EL CÉZAR: Rice & Stew was only the beginning. Expect more collaborative projects from the guys and I. In 2021, I am planning to release my first solo EP to showcase what I can do as an individual. Music from us as a trio is inevitable! Expect greatness in 2021. FLUSH: This project is just the spark to a flame that leads to the dynamite going boom. We have so much music to share and many experiences to give our listeners. We are performing shows and collaborating with people all over the world, It’s just a time to be global.
Amandah Opoku: Jimah, El Cézar & Quantum Flush, thank you for sitting down with me! Before we close this interview is there anything you want to say to your fans and our readers? JIMAH: I appreciate you for interviewing us and to everyone reading keep your head down and chase your goals, don’t worry about what those on the outside have to say, and go stream Rice & Stew out now on all platforms and more vibes on the way! EL CÉZAR: To all of the readers and supporters, thank you for taking the time to read this. Thank you for listening to Rice & Stew, and for accepting this sound. We don’t want it to be esoteric, but even if it’s that; I’m happy and thankful for those who resonate with the music. We love y’all and we want to keep growing with y’all. Stay safe and don’t forget to just be yourself. You’ll get further that way. Peace. FLUSH: I want to thank my fans for taking this journey with us into the new world. Thank you for reading and if you haven’t heard the project yet check it out and hop on the UFO. There is plenty of food to go around just take a bite of this Rice and Stew.

This is kinda a weird question but how do you develop your characters personality when you create them for a story? Or how do you even know what kind of personality you want them to have? I always find this challenging for me to do but when I watch your series all the characters are so different!
Hi! First off, tysm for saying that! Character development is really tricky and I sometimes feel like i’m not doing it right, so it’s OK if you feel like that too! But here are some of the tips that I can think of to help with that!
1) Diversify. I know I started off with the same thing when asked about creating characters physically, but the same applies with developing characters’ personalities. When you have a story with characters coming from different background (I’m talking race, sexual orientation, socioeconomic backgrouns, religious/political views, etc...), you AUTOMATICALLY end up with characters with different personalities because, naturally, if they are to reflect real life, they’re going to have different life experiences. And you don’t even have to be political about it, if that’s not your sort of thing! Diversifying a cast if not necessary political. It just reflects the real world, with the added bonus of helping you avoid every character being a copy of the other. That is, if you do your research, which brings me to tip number 2...
2) Research! You know how they say “write what you know”? I don’t necessarily agree with that sentiment, but it really applies to the previous tip mentioned. You can’t just write the story of a person whose experience you know nothing about. A lot of writers (including sims directors) tend to having a diverse cast under the excuse of them not knowing how to write a character that’s different than their own race, sexual orientation, religion, etc... But the internet’s right there. BESIDES, unless you’re writing a story about black teens struggling with police brutality, or an Arab queer’s struggle with homophobia in their native country, or something equivalent to that typa deal.....You don’t really need to dive that deep into research. Just do some superficial research, just to know your shit! And even if you don’t, fully, there’s nothing scary about diversifying your cast. I remember once, before I started doing research, in Episode 2 (16: 39) of The Rivers, I had Raven sleep without a head scarf and got some people (jokingly) commenting about it. I’ve been giving her a head scarf ever since. ;p And, don’t be afraid to ask people. I still do it all the time! On that note, if you ever plan on including an Arab muslim queer into your series, hit me up. <3
4) Character arcs, which are just about my favorite thing in the world. Whether they’re good to bad arcs, or bad to good (redemption arcs ftw!!), you can never go wrong with a well established character arc to spice things up a bit! People change, and if you want your characters to reflect people, they should change too. Also, nothing gets people talking like a character arc. Seeing a character start one point, only to end up on a whole other point...that’s really gonna give you the push you need to really develop the character beyond the same old same old. JUST MAKE SURE TO SLOWLY ESTABLISH THE ARC. You can’t just...........suddenly make a bad character good, or a good character bad, on the course of one or two episodes. This is when tip #3 really plays in. If you do intend for a character to eventually have an arc, and that’s something you really should have established before (not necessarily at the start of the project, but a few chapters/episodes before said arc should come to light), then gradually start highlighting the morally grey side of the character (If you’re going bad > good, this means the character’s soft side, and if you’re going good > bad, this means the character’s flaws).
3) Morally grey characters are your friends! Try your best to always avoid black and white characters, meaning characters that are unconditionally good or unconditionally bad. That doesn’t reflect real life people, if you think about it. No one is JUST good or JUST bad (unless you intentionally want to write them as so, then go off. But if you don’t then keep mind of that!). Nothing makes a bad character more intriguing than if he has a soft spot for something (take: a super villain who wreaks havoc, but would do anything for his little brother). Similarly, an over-idolized hero character, who never does anything wrong, is just as boring. Give that shit some flaws!! Some FLAVOR!! So, the next time you’re writing a character, whether good or bad, give them something that could sway them into a different moral direction (even if you never pursue it). This something, whatever it is, also opens the room....
And finally,
5) Give your characters a... thing. Or, multiple things. I didn’t know how else to word that, LOL. But, yeah! I know this tip seems obvious, but I learned the hard way that, if you don’t establish your character’s thing before you start the series, you’re gonna end up with characters that you just have no idea what to do with. Giving your characters a thing also helps a lot when it comes to avoiding making every character a copy to the other.
Take The Rivers, for example: I couldn’t really apply tip #1 to the main cast because they’re siblings! And siblings rarely belong to different race or religions, at least these siblings don’t. So, I gave each sibling a thing (or multiple things) that makes them stand out from the rest. Jonah is a recovering alcoholic, and that plays a huge factor in how I develop his character throughout the series. It’s a factor that plays in whenever I want him to react a certain way to some news, good or bad, and the way I want OTHER characters to handle him (see: the way Raven treats Jonah before & after she finds out that he’s a recovering alcoholic). Similarly, Noah has Coronary Artery Disease, and is prone to panic attacks, and those are 2 things that I constantly need to keep in mind when writing him. Raign also has generalized anxiety disorder, and is a Lesbian - both of these factors make her stand out from the rest of her siblings. And finally, Tresor has serious control issues over her younger siblings because she’s raised them like her mother. She also has abandonment issues because of Jonah, so she reacts to Noah leaving in Episode 12 much differently than Raign, for example.
All of these things that I’ve given every character helps in the development process of the characters because a huge part of developing a character has to do with how they 1) act and 2) react to things!
And ofc, always take into consideration the series’ genre. Some of these tips don’t necessarily apply! Take, for example, a fantasy series set in an alternative/fantasy universe (Like my other series, The Foundlings) were stuff like race and religion/political views don’t really apply. In that case, play on things like different species or creatures, etc... to make characters different than one another. That’s a whole other type of research for a whole other topic that I can get into, if you need me to. But for now, I hope these tips help a bit and I answered your question! TYSM for coming to me with it, it means a lot! <3

@sl-walker sent a fic meme ask ages ago about Riches and Wonders (I’m so slow I’m sorry). Part 1 of the replies is here, Part 2′s here.
10: Why did you choose this pairing for this particular story?
Depends on which “pairing”. The main relationship is obviously Maul and Savage slowly growing more comfortable with each other. As I’ve said, originally I chose the relationship because I wanted someone to get Maul away from Sidious and Savage was one of the people who’d do that, and I enjoyed their interactions in TCW. I have a weird soft spot for the murderous short sibling/long-suffering big sibling going along with the ridiculous vengeance plans because he just wants his brother to be happy dynamic haha. The more I’ve been thinking about the way they relate to each other, the more I adore their relationship tbh. The way they think about their relationship is completely different – Savage thinks Maul is the little brother who must be protected, Maul thinks Savage is the Sith apprentice – because they genuinely believe that that’s what relationships are. They’ve never had any other model, and they’re trying to mold each other into what they think they should be, but what they actually have is something else. Maul’s understanding especially hasn’t caught up with the way he treats Savage & what he wants to get out of their relationship. Yet.
As for Keeu/Savage… I’m really, really creeped out by the way the Nightsisters touch Savage on the show. You don’t touch a person that way, you touch someone you see as an object. Also, I feel that every ship with Savage (especially with a woman) is inherently dodgy unless there’s like, a massive, painful section with discussions about agency and consent beforehand? There’s no way he’s internalized anything healthy, with how his society’s set up in canon. Plus, the way he always follows someone’s orders in canon, and the post-Talzin’s ritual/Feral’s murder agency issues I waffled on about in Part one. So, the scene way a way for me to figure out just why I’m so incredibly uncomfortable with him getting shipped and also to treat him as someone who was genuinely hurt by what happened to him in canon? With Maul’s horrific abuse backstory and Savage’s tendency to care for his family instead of/as a way to distract from his own pain, it’s pretty easy to lose sight of the fact that he is also a victim of abuse.
(Side note – I mean, I tend to write Savage as aroace anyway because this is my story and I’d have to concentrate and consciously put attraction in the narrative. He doesn’t think of himself that way obviously because having a sexual/romantic orientation in the first place needs a certain feeling of agency, of it mattering whether you want someone.)
11: What do you like best about this fic?
I mostly just really really wanted this fic to exist, and now it does! Magic! I really want to read more about Maul & Savage, even if I have to super-slowly write it myself
Also, Savage’s narrative voice? It’s very fun to write in, and after six months of thinking in it it’s kinda hard to go back. I had to write Lithops in an intentionally super different way (short sentences instead of overusing ‘and’, using the adjectives I’m thinking of instead of thinking again and choosing two that fit more weirdly, etc) to get used to not writing in it anymore for when I’m doing Maul’s POV in the next part of Runaways. I’m growing comfortable enough with writing in English to write in ways that read slightly odd (hopefully) instead of going, must! Be! Grammatically! And! Lexically! Faultless!! so i can look like a native speaker. Also, it’s made me much more careful about word choice, specifically avoiding long obscure ones, which I like (there’s a reason why I subscribe to the Word of the Day newsletter lol) but I want to get to a point where I can be specific with very ordinary words
Also, I really enjoy how incredibly contemptuous Savage is of Darth Sidious. He truly Does Not Care about the Sith planning for millennia to take over the galaxy. He doesn’t care how devilish and intelligent and powerful he is. As far as he’s concerned, Sidious had one job – raise Maul – and he Totally Screwed It Up. He’s not a mastermind, he’s a pathetic old man who abused Savage’s little brother. To Sidious, Savage isn’t even important enough to be a nuisance, but the contempt’s mutual. Writing about Old Sid from Savage’s POV is much easier that from Maul’s, but Talzin from Maul’s perspective is going to be so hard I think.
12: What do you like least about this fic?
I totally suck at fight scenes. I mean,
“[Savage spends some time menacing the target, gets distracted by orphans]
“Leave this place, young ones. We mean you no harm,” Savage says, crouching slightly to get closer to their eye-level, and when he looks up again, the human has opened his dingy coat and pulled out a lean, primitive, solid projectile slugthrower.
He cocks it, faster than Savage can react.
He fires the gun.
Something hits Savage, but it isn’t pain. It’s not a bullet, it’s much bigger, and it barrels him over to the floor and sprays his belly with warm sticky fluid and fleshy shrapnel. It lies on top of him. It has arms.”
What?! That’s it? I spent more words describing the orphans that Savage gets distracted by. I mean, yeah, I’m following along Savage’s attention and he truly Doesn’t Care about being a hit man, he just wants to spend quality time with his brother. And it’s supposed to be unexpected. There are reasons why I wrote this scene like “Maul, talk to me about space pigeons!!! Okay Maul’s spotted the target, let me intimidate him. Wow am I really that scary?? Oh no, orphan children – I am a person who has compassion for children, cue some development in the future. Gun. Gunshot. I’m not dead. NO, Maul! Maul!!! MAUL!!!!!!” but at the same time, that was a pathetic fight and I really need to Learn Things before I write some of the scenes that are going to happen. I can’t coast by on ‘drive-by murder barely described because neither POV character truly cares’ and ‘this series is called Runaways so they run away’ forever
There are probably many other problems with the fic, but I don’t have the distance yet to be more objective – and I was trying my absolute best and rewriting everything a thousand times – so it’s not like I’ve become so much better in that short time. I don’t have the skills to recognize many flaws yet
14: Is there anything you wanted readers to learn from reading this fic?
I think wanting people to learn from my writing is probably really condescending. If there are lessons in it, I’m sure everyone who reads it already knew them. Savage Opress is a person with feelings? Consent is absolutely necessary and it’s better to check with your partner way too often than not enough, and look for non-verbal signs and make it as easy as possible to refuse you? Because sometimes, it’s not as easy as ‘if they don’t want to they’ll say no’? Recovery is a sometimes a slow process especially if you don’t actually know you are recovering? The random people that get killed in the background also had a family?
15: What did you learn from writing this fic?
Don’t write 10k+ one-shots. Or do, because you’ll be kinda proud of the result, but it’s going to be So Hard
Also, it was probably really good, for my expectation management skills anyway, to pour everything I had into a fic that I knew from the start not very many people were going to read. Someday I’m going to stop caring about hit counts

Hi, I sent a prompt but my old, stupid iPad is playing up so you either didn't receive it or received it 12343 times, lol. It was: Kara travels to a new Earth and meets the second incarnation of Supergirl, who is also Kara and Cat's daughter. This experience inspires her to reveal her feelings to Cat. Thank you!
Kara knows it’s probably dangerous, but when she was overwhelmed by the weight of responsibilities and expectations of her Earth, she’d bring out Cisco’s device and hop worlds for a few hours. At first she just checked in with Barry on Earth-1, but eventually that got to be no better. When she’d show up there, she’d end up helping with whatever mess he’d gotten into lately.
And it’s not that she didn’t like helping, Barry was a friend and a good man, and Kara was always glad to help out. But he didn’t usually need the help, and it seemed to turn into trading one set of responsibilities for another. Not exactly the restful escape she’d been thinking of.
So after a while, she starts visiting other worlds instead. She gets a list of ‘definitely avoid’ Earths from Cisco in exchange for a signed photo of her pod, and off she goes. And it’s always interesting, seeing where she pops up and what’s happening on all these different Earths. So many things are different each time, but it’s fun seeing what’s the same as well.
Like when she steps out onto Earth-50 for the first time and sees the CatCo tower in the distance, just as bright as it is on her Earth. It wasn’t always there, or at least didn’t always bear the distinctive logo, but most of the time it was a familiar sight on unfamiliar worlds.
Kara is just about to head into the city from where she’d appeared a safe distance from the outskirts when a rushing noise overhead gets her attention. Apparently there are aliens on this planet, possibly even another version of herself. It wouldn’t be the first time, and Kara steels herself against another pang of hurt that always seems to come after meeting herself and sharing the loss of Krypton with someone who understands.
Except this time it isn’t another version of herself standing there, though Kara can see a resemblance. And more than that, this woman has the House of El crest emblazoned across her chest, marking her instantly as family. The suit reminds Kara of Astra’s uniform, the uniform of Krypton’s military guild, but it’s softer somehow, not as severe. More like Kal-El’s than Astra’s, especially with the cape flowing from her shoulders. It looks nice, and Kara is tempted to copy it for herself when she gets home.
Kara’s own suit isn’t visible, she’d learned the hard way that it just made her stand out when blending in was the far better option. So there’s no matching recognition in this woman’s eyes, no instant camaraderie like Kara feels surging through her at the thought that maybe someone else had survived on this world.
“Iieu?”
Kara is sure she’d misheard at first, that after so many years only rarely speaking Kryptonian she’d somehow forgotten it completely. But no, she remembers that word completely, whispers it every night as she begs Rao to look over her parents. Over her mother.
“What?” Kara asks in shock, because this girl is her age, maybe a little younger. It can’t be her daughter, can it? How would that even be possible?
“Ieiu, what happened? Why do you look so young?” the questions come quickly, and Kara struggles to keep up. A child, a daughter, someone who carries on a tradition from light years away. It’s everything Kara hadn’t known she wanted so badly, everything she’d never thought possible.
“I’m from another Earth, not this one. I’m not actually your ieiu,” Kara admits, knowing she needs to correct that assumption before anything else. “Who are you?” A look of surprise crosses the woman’s face, and rather than answering she pulls out a phone to type out a message, probably to whatever version of Kara lives on this Earth.
Sure enough barely twenty seconds of silence pass before there’s another rushing noise, and now Kara is face to face with another version of herself in an outfit similar to the one the younger woman is wearing. Except this time she’s visibly older, aged in a way that Kara hasn’t seen from any other version of herself, even the ones who hadn’t spend decades in the Phantom Zone. She looks to be in her mid-thirties, where every other version of herself Kara has met still looks twenty-five. And that’s as much of a shock as anything else Kara has seen on this Earth so far.
“Who are you?” the older version of herself asks, speaking English rather than the Kryptonian Kara longs to hear. It’s been so long since she’s had a proper conversation in her native language.
“My name is Kara Zor-El, I’m from another version of Earth,” Kara says, standing straighter and speaking with all the weight of the name she carries. It might only be another version of herself standing there, but she still reacts to an older Kryptonian in a position of power with instinctive respect. “I mean you no harm,” she promises in Kryptonian, adding the formal gesture for a peaceful meeting when the older Kara seems unmoved.
“Ieiu, she looks just like you from your old pictures,” the girl whispers, breaking the growing tension between the two Karas.
“Hush, Hannah,” Older-Kara says quietly, and the girl falls silent, watching curiously. “Why are you on my Earth?” The question is pointed but no longer openly hostile, and Kara relaxes, just the slightest bit.
“I have a device that allows me to jump worlds, I use it sometimes to explore the possibilities,” Kara admits, flushing when the older woman gives her a look that speaks volumes about how stupid she thinks the practice is. It’s at very least a pointless risk, and Kara knows that.
“I see I’m foolish and headstrong in every version of myself,” Older-Kara says, earning a sheepish look in response. “I’m half tempted to take you to meet my wife, she’s the one who managed to smack the idiocy from my head years ago. But she’s in meetings all day, and I’ve been strictly warned not to interrupt unless the world is ending again. You have no intention of destroying my Earth, do you?”
“No, not at all!” Kara rushes to reassure her. “I usually just wander around for a while, see what’s different and what’s the same.”
“I’d imagine there’s a good bit of difference in this world,” Older-Kara says with a wry smile. “The fact that you still look twenty-five proves that much.”“Oh, I am twenty-five,” Kara says, looking down self-consciously. “My pod got stuck in the Phantom Zone, I arrived later than I was meant to,” she explains when the older her sends a questioning look her way.
“That’s horrible,” Hannah breaks in, and this time her mother doesn’t hush her. “Stuck all that time, you must have missed out on meeting Mother.”
“I guess so,” Kara says, not wanting to explain the differences and subtleties of the multiverse to them in the middle of another serious conversation. “But it’s okay, I had a great family take me in when I arrived.”
“Still, missing out on Cat’s particular brand of care is a shame,” Older-Kara says, and suddenly Kara can’t breathe.
“You married Cat Grant?” she manages to gasp out in disbelief, immediately trying to figure out how that could have happened. Her first reaction is one of disbelief, but then Kara starts to remember the little flashes of what had always seemed to be mutual attraction, the ones that had never been acted on for too many reasons to list.
“Yes, we met in college,” Older-Kara says with a puzzled frown. “Why is this so surprising to you?”
“Um, she was my boss,” Kara says, still processing the information.
“That would make it complicated,” Hannah says with a smirk, and Kara finds herself liking her. She can see Cat’s influence in her sense of humor and confidence. And now that she knows that Hannah is Cat’s daughter, she can see the resemblance there as well.
Older-Kara seems to follow the glance and unspoken question, and before Kara can even consider asking is answering. “Cat and I performed a full binding marriage ceremony when we married. It allowed us to have children, and split the blessings of Sol and Rao between us.”
“What does that mean, split the blessings?” Kara asks, not having heard of that particular effect of a binding. Then again, she’d never heard of a Kryptonian and human binding before either.
“I age faster, she ages slower, for one,” Older-Kara explains, gesturing at herself in way of explanation. “From what we’ve managed to test so far, we’re aging at roughly the same rate, much faster than Kryptonians on Earth and much slower than humans. That’s the most noticeable difference, though my abilities are slightly weaker than they were before the binding, and her senses are slightly better. The binding seems to have balanced us, somewhat.”
Kara absorbs the news silently, letting her mind think through all of the implications of that. She’d been so afraid of ending up alone as the world aged around her, but maybe it doesn’t have to be that way. Maybe she can live an almost normal life. And even if that life isn’t with Cat, though the part of her that’s finally admitting to the attraction hopes there’s a chance for that, at least the possibility is there to share with someone.
“I think you broke her, Ieiu,” Hannah laughs, and after a moment Older-Kara joins in. It’s not teasing, more understanding, and Kara manages a smile as her brain finally manages to catch up completely.
“I um, I think I’ll have to save the full visit for another time,” she says as she pulls out the reality portal. “I think I have some pressing conversations in my future.”
“Visit us any time,” Older-Kara says with a knowing look. “And if you get the girl, bring her with you. Seeing two Cats in one room would undoubtedly be an event to remember.”
Kara laughs and agrees as she calibrates the device to take her home, suddenly desperate to see if the possibilities she’s imagining could become reality. Or, well, could become her reality.

1. Describe the character’s height and build. Is he heavyset, thin, short, rangy?
“I’m a big ol string bean, at 5′10. I’d like to say healthy because i exercise quite frequently but i pretty much stay the same weight i have for years due to my various love for food.” Meg is fit/slim, but she never turns down the opportunity to treat herself.
2. How old is he?
“I’m the big two-o.”
3. Describe his posture. Does he/she carry himself well or does he/she slouch?
“I’m not much of a sloucher. My mom would always smack my hands at the dinner table if i was slouching even though she let my father do it. So i’d say pretty well, mostly from habit.” That and her mother had Meg take ballet classes when she was little, so bad posture was always a big no-no.
4. How is his health? Is he fit or out of shape? Any illnesses or conditions? Any physical disabilities?
“I guess fit? Haha, is sleeping in til the afternoon an illness? Because if so, you got me.” No Meg is pretty healthy physically wise.
5. How does he move? Is he clumsy, graceful, tense, fluid?
Graceful, hah that’s a laugh. I don’t know? I walk like a regular human being, is this even a real thing?” Yes it is Meg, lol. Meg is pretty relaxed in most aspects, if anything she walks casual, although sometimes if in a good mood she has a charming strut she puts on.
6. How attractive is this character physically? How does he perceive himself in the mirror?
“Meh.” Wow, Meg my god. Meg has never been one for appearances; it wasn’t until recently that Daphne got her in things like doing her hair and makeup. Meg doesn’t really care for it, but most of the time shes confident in her own skin.
7. Describe his complexion. Dark, light, clear, scarred?
“I’m not pale, but i’m not really dark either. I look i got a tan, but got out of the tanning booth halfway through. Like a golden-brown potato chip. I do get oily sometimes, it just mostly looks like i’ve been sweating though.” meg-girl. Meg is slightly tan, but in the winter her complexion lightens immensely
8. Describe his hair: color, texture, style.
“My hair is probably about upper-mid back. I usually don’t do anything with it, but it’s naturally wavy a bit. So most of the time its just down, or up in a pony tail.”
9. What color are his/her eyes?
“Hazel, but the green outshines the most. My mom always use to call them Σμαράγδια της θάλασσα, which translated means Emeralds of the sea.
10. Does the character have any other noteworthy features?
“I’d like to think my eyes, and i have a lil freckle above my lip that draws a bit of attention. Whether good or bad i’m not really sure which.”
11. What are his/her chief tension centers?
“I guess my shoulders.” Shoulders/Upper back.
12. What is the character’s wardrobe like? Casual, dressy, utilitarian? Bright colors, pastels, neutrals? Is it varied, or does he/she have six of the same suit?
“I don’t know, i don’t feel like what i wear falls under any certain type of fashion style. I just wear whit i like.” Meg can go from casual to classy as hell. It just depends how shes feeling and what shes dressing up for. Most of her clothes are either dark's or neutrals, but there is some pops of color in there.
Most of the time she is dressed up like this (x) (x) (x) (x) (x)
13. Do his/her clothes fit well? Does he/she seem comfortable in them?
“If they didn’t fit, i wouldn’t be wearing them. Sometimes i like clothes that hug my body right, sometimes i like wearing loose things that fall and hang off my sides.”
14. Does he/she dress the same on the job as he/she does in his free time? If not, what are the differences?
“Sometimes, but mostly its still casual.”
15. You knew it was coming: Boxers, briefs or commando?
Laced solid colored underwear.
Speech
1. What does this character’s voice sound like? High-pitched, deep, hoarse?
“Haven’t really thought about that much?” I’d say somewhere in the middle ground. Her voice is feminine but has strength behind it.
2. How does he/she normally speak? Loud, soft, fast, evenly? Does he/she talk easily, or does he/she hesitate?
“Normal.” Meg never raises her voice unless around Hades or shes in an argument. Other than that, no. She never really is one to hesitate.
3. Does the character have a distinct accent or dialect? Any individual quirks of pronunciation? Any, like, you know, verbal tics?
“I guess i used too. I was raised in Greece, but my mom taught me English when i was very young. She said it was always handy to know more than one language. Most of the time people can’t tell i’m from another country until i start speaking my native language.”
4. What language/s does he/she speak, and with how much fluency?
“I can speak Greek fluently since its my native language, English as well. I know a few words and phrases of Albanian and Latin, since a lot of people in Greek used a variety of languages.”
5. Does he/she switch languages or dialects in certain situations?
“Sometimes. I speak my native language more in my head than anywhere else. Or when my mother calls.” Sometimes if Meg is flustered of angry, or it just slips from her mouth without her even realizing it.
6. Is he/she a good impromptu speaker, or does he/she have to think about his words?
“Never hesitate. Say whats on your mind.” Oh meg shaddup, you hesitate sometimes binch don’t give me that.
7. Is he/she eloquent or inarticulate? Under what circumstances might this change?
“I want to say eloquent, but honestly that sounds way more re-fined than i feel like i am?”
Mental and Emotional
1. How intelligent is this character? Is he/she book-smart or street-smart?
“Uh, both? I’d like to think i have both.” With Meg its a fair middle ground. Meg is intelligent but sometimes lacks in the motivation to do her work department. And she has plenty of street wit from Hades.
2. Does he/she think on his feet, or does he/she need time to deliberate?
“Feet. Definitely feet. Probably would’ve been as in many situatuions as i have if i put more thought into certain things...” Hahaha, *coughs* Herc *coughes loudEr* HaDES
3. Describe the character’s thought process. Is he/she more logical, or more intuitive? Idealistic or practical?
“Instinct, although sometimes more logical than if not.”
4. What kind of education has the character had?
Tbh, i’m not sure because Meg’s bio is still in the drafts and shes not listed on the dorm listings. But im pretty sure shes in University from what i remember.
5. What are his/her areas of expertise? What, if anything, is he/she interested in learning more about?
“Ah, you’d laugh. It’s kind of lame.” Meg has a love for mythology and anything to deal with that. She loves reading myths and legends. It brings out the childlike aspects in Meg.
6. Is he/she an introvert or an extrovert?
7. Describe the character’s temperament. Is he/she even-tempered or does he/she have mood swings? Cheerful or melancholy? Laid-back or driven?
“Introvert. I don’t care too much for people.” That and usually Hades got her busy/and or kept to himself a lot. It takes a certain person to make Meg and extrovert, aka Daphne/Tito.
8. How does he/she respond to new people or situations? Is he/she suspicious, relaxed, timid, enthusiastic?
“Depends on the situation or person.” Meg WILL fight for what she wants, so if on her bad side she could raise hell if she wants too. Although shes not the type of person to ask for help either. But when it comes to new people she’s suspicious in the sense she never fully can trust a person until she gets to know them better. But if she feels secure around someone she’s very laid-back.
9. Is he/she more likely to act, or to react?
“Act.”
10. Which is his/her default: fight or flight?
“Fight. Always fight.”
11. Describe the character’s sense of humor. Does he/she appreciate jokes? Puns? Gallows humor? Bathroom humor? Pranks?
“Gallows humor. I don’t care for vulgar jokes boys make. It makes me feel like i’m losing more of my brains cells from listening to something like that.”
12. Does the character have any diagnosable mental disorders? If yes, how does he/she deal with them?
“Not that i’m aware of no.” Meg doesn’t have depression, but she can feel quite lonely/or sad sometimes.
13. What moments in this character’s life have defined him/her as a person?
“I feel as if i’ve had too many of those moments.” When Megs dad died, or betraying Herc, working for Hades. There’s a lot lol.
14. What does he/she fear?
“Having my freedom taken away. Never standing up for what i want or believe in.” The irony.
15. What are his/her hopes or aspirations?
To be happy. Move on from the past and start something fresh and new.
16. What is something he/she doesn’t want anyone to find out about him/her?
She’s not as strong as puts on.
Relationships
1. Describe this character’s relationship with his/her parents.
“I’m very close to my mom. She had to raise me alone for the majority of my life and she worked so hard to have the things i could. I could never repay her for all she’s done for me. σ'αγαπώ μαμά (I love you mama).” Meg was a big daddys girl, but her father passed away when she was 7 from a motorcycle accident.
2. Does the character have any siblings? What is/was their relationship like?
“Nope.”
3. Are there other blood relatives to whom he/she is close? Are there ones he/she can’t stand?
“Not really.”
4. Are there other, unrelated people whom he/she considers part of his family? What are his/her relationships with them?
“Not at the moment.” She’d say Hades or Peyton and Patrick since she see’s them practically all the time. But it’s not a good relationship with Hades.
5. Who is/was the character’s best friend? How did they meet?
“Daphne. I love her.” I’m not sure how Meg met Daphne, but i’m blessed that she did.
6. Does he/she have other close friends?
“Tito for sure. He always makes me smile. I don’t know what it is. Berlioz too, even if he doesn’t want to admit it.”
7. Does he/she make friends easily, or does he/she have trouble getting along with people?
“I’m i feel it’s easy to get along with people, but sometimes people are annoying and it frustares me beyond belief.”
8. Which does he/she consider more important: family or friends?
“Family. Always Family.” Meg doesn’t have a wide variety of friends, so Family is most important to her. Especially since they’re people who feel like home to her.
9. Is the character single, married, divorced, widowed? Has he/she been married more than once?
“Single? ha, married? I’m not sure that will ever happen.”
10. Is he/she currently in a romantic relationship with someone other than a spouse?
“Uh, no?”
11. Who was his/her first crush? Who is his/her latest?
“Uh, well there was this boy from my home town. I mean he was sweet and really naive, but i think thats what i liked most about him. Just the pure innocence about him, and i fucked it up. What a surprise. I hope he's doing okay. Recently? No-” Bish talking about Herc, and we all know who Meg is talking about recently bish i see you
12. What does he/she look for in a romantic partner?
“Someone i can hold real conversations with, someone i can laugh and be myself around.” Meg is simple she just wants someone is going to be there for her, even if she doesn’t necessarily need it.
13. Does the character have children? Grandchildren? If yes, how does he/she relate to them? If no, does he/she want any?
“I don’t want to even phantom the thought of having kids right now. But maybe someday.”
14. Does he/she have any rivals or enemies?
Meg doesn’t want to answer this question because she doesn’t want Hades to over-hear lmao.
15. What is the character’s sexual orientation? Where does he/she fall on the Kinsey scale?
“I’d rather boys, but intelligent ones.” Probably 0 or 2.
16. How does he/she feel about sex? How important is it to him/her?
“I want it to be with someone i care about and vice versa. I’m not the type to sleep around, but i mean to the people who do it you do you boo; just not my thing.”
17. What are his/her turn-ons? Turn-offs? Weird bedroom habits?
“I’d rather not talk about this, thanks.” Meg is quite a passionate person and she’s not going to give everything up so easily because she likes a fight. It would depend what mood she’s in, she’d love intimate or go farther into the rougher aspect of sex. Like hair pulling, lip biting, and all that good stuff.
Beliefs
1. Do you know your character’s astrological (zodiac of choice) sign? How well does he/she fit type?
I feel either an aries or leo. But probably mostly aries because they’re lively, passionate, courageous. Their negative traits would include being impatient, stubborn, and impulsive which just all sounds like Meg perfectly tbh.
2. Is this character religious, spiritual, both, or neither? How important are these elements in his/her life?
“I really don’t have any specific view on it. My mother gave me the choice of choosing/doing whatever i wanted to with religion. Maybe i just haven’t figured it out yet.”
3. Does this character have a personal code of morals or ethics? If so, how did that begin? What would it take to compromise it?
“Don’t we all have a code of morals? We all know right between wrong, but sometimes we do it anyway. It depends, although it would take a lot for me to compromise it.” Like being forced to frame drugs on Hercules lol.
4. How does he/she regard beliefs that differ from his? Is he/she tolerant, intolerant, curious, indifferent?
“Tolerant. I like to hear the other side of things or someone’s opinion on the matter.”
5. What prejudices does he/she hold? Are they irrational or does he/she have a good reason for them?
Mostly with everyone not because of color or what they look like, but shes always felt skeptical towards people because unless you don’t know that person like the back of your hand you don’t know what they’re capable of. Just like Hades. So pretty much Hades ruined her when it comes to people in general.
Daily Life
1. What is the character’s financial situation? Is he/she rich, poor, comfortable, in debt?
Meg has been comfortable, but there are times when she was younger that her family was hurting for money.
2. What is his/her social status? Has this changed over time, and if so, how has the change affected him/her?
“Under the radar.”
3. Where does he/she live? House, apartment, trailer? Is his/her home his/her castle or just a place to crash? What condition is it in? Does he/she share it with others?
“I miss my home back in Greece. It was just beautiful, i miss it so much sometimes compared to the form i’m living in at Walt.”
4. Besides the basic necessities, what does he/she spend his/her money on?
“Probably movies, i love to indulge in fantasy.”
5. What does he/she do for a living? Is he/she good at it? Does he/she enjoy it, or would he/she rather be doing something else?
“Nothing really.” Do you mean work for Hades? Then yes, and she doesn’t hate it but she doesn’t love it either. She’s known Hades for so long now that he feels like a friend in a weird twisted way.
6. What are his/her interests or hobbies? How does he/she spend his/her free time?
Meg will never admit it, but dancing. More of a classical style. Definitely something like this. (x)
7. What are his/her eating habits? Does he/she skip meals, eat out, drink alcohol, avoid certain foods?
Meg doesn’t have big meals unless she’s going out to eat, so she snacks a lot.
Associations
Which of the following do you associate with the character, or which is his/her favorite:
1. Color? Purple 2. Smell? The Ocean 3. Time of day? Sunset 4. Season? Autumn 5. Book? Anything that has to do with Mythology, she has a guilty pleasure for the Percy Jackson series. 6. Music? Upbeat songs, once that are relaxing to listen to. She has a soft spot for ballads. 7. Place? By the crashing waves of crystal blue ocean, by herself with a good book. 8. Substance? Vodka/Wine 9. Plant? Iris 10. Animal? Humming bird
