This week we take a hike on the Ben Damph Estate in Torridon, in some of the best conditions for landscape photography. Beinn Alligin 86/282 Sgurr Mor 87/282 Tom na Gruagaich On Thursday I woke up directly opposite Ben Alligin, and it just looked too good not to. I wasn’t particularly speedy in getting to the start and instantly regretted it when I got to the car park, which was full, and had to abandon the van on the verge nearby. I chose anti clockwise after reading on some trip reports that the down climbs from the Horns were easier that way. I was a little nervous about getting Cluanie up and down some of them so this seemed to be the better choice. It’s a relatively short walk in and then straight up the first hill and onto the Horns. I had them completely to myself, and it was fun to scramble up and around them without feeling like I was under pressure. 

The main tops of Ben Alligin look amazing as you approach them from this angle too. The Torridon mountains just hit the spot for me in terms of the rock:path ratio! It’s a quick ascent from the Bealach below the Horns up to Sgurr Mor. I stopped for lunch at the summit cairn and chatted to a guy I had also seen on Maol Cheann Dearg the day before. An easy path takes you across to the second Munro, where there were even more people on the summit. I’ve never known the hills so busy midweek but it’s great to have some chat on mountaintops. The descent from this one isn’t overly inspiring, with some big rocky steps and loose path making it sore on the knees after a long day.
