One year and 30 Munros to go!
Tumblr media
As today’s my 29th birthday my quest to compleat* my Munros before I’m 30 has now reached the final stretch. More by chance than design, rather pleasingly I’ve got a nice round 30 to do in the next year, the final one, Schiehallion, scheduled for 23 June 2018.
The other remaining 29 are some of the tricker ones, not in a technical climbing sense, but in that they are quite a long way from roads, and include visiting both the points that people argue are furthest you can get from tarmac on the UK mainline. So the next 12 months should involve quite a few long days, bike-ins, bothies, and wild camping spots.
The final 30, about 14 days on the hill plus a few more for walks-in, grouped roughly by area/trips, are:
Caringorms: An Sgorsoch and Carn an Fhidhleir (Bike in from Linn of Dee or Glen Tilt, possible run)
Locharber(ish): Sgurr Mor (from Loch Arkaig)
Glen Strathfarrar: Sgùrr à Choire Ghlais, Carn nan Gobhar, and Sgùrr na Ruaidhe
Glen Cannich: An Socach and An Riabhachan
Torridon: Liathach (Spidean a’choirs and Mullach an Rathain)
Glen Carron: Maoile Lunndaidh;                       Sgurr a’ Chaorachain and Sgurr Choinnich;                       Bidein a’ Choire Sheasgaich and Lurg Mhor;                       Beinn Liath Mhor and Sgorr Ruadh
Fisherfield: Ruadh Stac Mor, A’ Mhaighdean, Ben Tarsuinn, Mullach Coire Mhic Fhearchair and Sgurr Ban
Loch Ericht/Loch Ossian (potential walk through Dalwhinnie to Corrour or 3 day trip from Rannoch): Ben Alder and Beinn Bheoil;                                       Carn Dearg, Geal Charn, Aonach Beag, Beinn Eibhin;                                      Sgor Gaibhre
Perthshire: Schiehallion - the last one!
Because I’m a bit geeky (and it’s easy to do off the Hill Lists app) I made a graph showing my climbing rate so far - it’s improved considerably over the last few years so this all should be achievable in the next year. Going to university for eight years in the south of England, unsurprisingly, turns out is not that helpful for Munro climbing, but having a parent who’s trying to compleat is. Moving to Scotland on the other hand is good for Munro climbing!
