What is a prototype?

A prototype is a preliminary model of something. Projects that offer physical products need to show backers documentation of a working prototype. This gallery features photos, videos, and other visual documentation that will give backers a sense of what’s been accomplished so far and what’s left to do. Though the development process can vary for each project, these are the stages we typically see:

Explorations that test ideas and functionality.

About this project

Most campers use one of the widely available collapsible metal tubing / cloth chairs and a heavy folding table that all together weigh about 30lbs and clog up a small car. The BenchTable weighs under 6lbs and is 100% recyclable because it is made from coroplast corrugated plastic panels (like the election yard signs). There are no fasteners… the six panels fold and lock together. Watch the video to see the simple assembly sequence.

The bench seat will support a crazy amount of weight… tested to 1,000lbs. The table is 16″x36″ and will hold all the normal camping equipment for cooking or relaxing or even cleaning fish. The corrugated panels are made from polypropylene and do not absorb spills and are easy to wipe clean. Since the BenchTable is so light we added four holes at the base that you use with tent stakes to hold it down on windy days. The BenchTable has been tested for over 2 years sitting outside with no rot, no rust, no parts falling off.

In addition to be accepted by recycling depots, the polypropylene plastic used in the BenchTable can be used for campfires in an emergency. The table panel alone could be cut into pieces that will make a campfire that burns steadily for 2 hours with almost no smoke.

The BenchTable has over 8 square feet of flat panels for a company to print advertising; making the BenchTable perfect for promotional giveaways at sporting events, concerts, etc, as seen on this single chair prototype.

We want to sell the BenchTable for $29. To do that we must find a way to reduce the manufacturing cost below $10. We can make BenchTables now. But we do it by hand… using routers, carbide bits, and base patterns to cut out the panels from 4×8 coroplast sheets. The hand made production cost right now in our two-man shop is about $25 each. We can make all the rewards before we are ramped up for mass production.

To have a profitable business, we need to have Steel Rule Dies made for each of the 4 panel shapes and have the BenchTables stamped out, folded, and packaged in high volumes at a die-cutting factory. The four Steel Rule Dies we need will have a one-time cost of about $750 apiece. The money from backers will pay for the dies and the deposit on our first order with the factory that requires a minimum production run of 1,000.

Risks and challenges

There is no risk of backers not getting their rewards because we make them now in our handmade shop and we will make yours and ship them to you. We have been making our coroplast chairs for several years. They are strong and durable. The marketing challenge is competing with the ubiquitous folding metal-tubing/cloth camp chairs. They are made in huge volumes in China and sell for under $10 retail. Most campers don’t realize those chairs cannot be recycled because of the steel tubing, cotton fabric, plastic handles, etc. They all end up in landfills. We see a big market for an eco-friendly 100% recycleable bench that has lots of area for full color advertising imprints.

The other challenge will be marketing… finding high-volume customers like concert promoters, sports teams, etc, who will apply their logos/advertising on the BenchTables and then give/donate them to customers and organizations.

We have been selling and testing our single TakeAwayChairs for about two years so we are confident about the structural engineering and product durability. They don’t collapse or even bend when you sit down.
