À l’origine, le photographe Ryan Debolski avait prévu de se pencher sur les paysages du sultanat d’Oman, pétromonarchie aux confins de la péninsule arabique, que connaît mal le public occidental. Mais, très vite, il s’est intéressé aux petits groupes d’hommes jouant sur la plage, en bas de chez lui. Venus d’Inde, du Pakistan, du Bangladesh, ces travailleurs constituent une main-d’œuvre bon marché et corvéable à merci qui bâtit les cités du Golfe. Mais au lieu de les figer dans leur bleu de travail, couverts de poussière et harassés de fatigue, il les saisit dans un rare moment de détente, sur le sable, en train de former une pyramide humaine ou de s’exercer à la lutte. Une vision inhabituelle, sexualisée, colorée, qui emprunte aux codes de la photo de mode et qui tranche avec ses images en noir et blanc de l’univers minéral, quasi lunaire, dans lequel ces prolétaires du désert vivent.
